A serious home theater workhorse

We have some customers who are simply looking for one thing: the best. They want the latest and the greatest of everything. If such a customer were in the market for a new home theater receiver, we'd want to show them the Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A3040. Yamaha's flagship receiver offers everything a serious home theater enthusiast wants, including new Dolby Atmos® processing (requires upcoming firmware update). Dolby Atmos adds a new dimension to sound

Dolby's latest surround sound technology was designed to bring a new level of immersion to your home theater. By employing in-ceiling speakers or special Atmos enabled upward-firing speakers that reflect sound off your ceiling, Dolby Atmos offers a greater sense of space for sound that's more three-dimensional. Already at work in film production studios and many movie theaters, Dolby Atmos represents a huge step in putting more "theater" into your home theater. (Firmware update required.)

The RX-A3040 lets you add two overhead or up-firing speakers (sometimes called "height" or "top" speakers) to a conventional seven-channel system — this is referred to as a 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup. Here's a breakdown of all the Dolby Atmos speaker configurations this receiver supports:

  • 7.1.2 - seven conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and two overhead or height speakers
  • 5.1.4 - five conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and four overhead or height speakers
  • 5.1.2 - five conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and two overhead or height speakers
  • 7.1.4 - seven conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and four overhead or height speakers (requires an external stereo power amp)

You can use one or two subwoofers with any of these configurations.

Wi-Fi offers a wide range of wireless music options

If you've never connected a receiver to your wireless home network, you may not realize how much music you're missing out on. Built-in Wi-Fi makes the RX-A3040 a snap to integrate with your network. Once you're connected, you can listen to free Pandora® Internet radio as well as free radio streams from hundreds of stations around the world. If you're a subscriber to Spotify®, SiriusXM, or Rhapsody, you can enjoy their seemingly endless music choices. Got a computer or networked hard drive loaded with music? DLNA compatibility allows this receiver to tap into your collection wirelessly, so you never have to touch another CD again. Finally, if you're an Apple® user, AirPlay lets you listen wirelessly from your iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch®, or a computer running iTunes®.

Extend your system's reach into four rooms

This receiver's nine-channel amp offers lots of connections to give you incredible multi-room flexibility. There are powered outputs for up to 11 speakers, so you can connect speakers in a second and third room. The 'A3040 can automatically send audio signals through the extra stereo outputs when the appropriate zone is powered on. The Zone 2 HDMI output lets you watch separate video content simultaneously on two different TVs. You can also use this feature to send video to a TV in a fourth room. Add another HDMI-capable receiver in that room, and you can connect speakers and a TV for a nice 2-channel audio/video setup — very impresive for a fourth zone.

Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A3040

The RX-A3040 can output any digital or analog audio/video source to a second zone via HDMI.

Built on sound principles

Excellent sound quality is the guiding principle behind Yamaha's AVENTAGE receivers. Professional-quality ESS Sabre digital-to-analog converters are employed for the seven primary output channels, decoding the latest audio formats while offering refreshing levels of detail in music and movies. Low-jitter PLL circuitry reduces timing jitter from digital sources, for accurate playback and precise stereo imaging. The symmetrical power amp layout isolates the circuitry for the left and right channels, for a high signal-to-noise ratio and a wide soundstage for stereo music listening. The aluminum front panel, rigid chassis, extra center foot, and internal cross-beam support help to further eliminate unwanted resonance and distortion.

Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A3040 with built-in Wi-Fi

Control your music and settings via Wi-Fi with Yamaha's free AV Controller app on your tablet or smartphone.

Advanced video processing

Great sound is only part of the AVENTAGE RX-A3040's story. Video upconversion can take analog or HDMI-connected sources as high as 4K for display on Ultra HD TVs. If you haven't yet taken the 4K plunge, you can also choose upscaling to 1080p HD to make old DVDs glisten with new life on your TV. Yamaha's advanced video processing can improve movies and TV shows by using edge and motion deinterlacing to create smooth motion and sharp images. Want to see how good photos and video from a smartphone or camera can look on your TV? Connect it to the front panel HDMI input with with Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) compatibility and share videos and photos on the big screen instead of your phone's tiny one.

Easy control with your smartphone or tablet

What's the best way to control this receiver's many features? Download the free Yamaha AV Controller app to your smartphone or tablet. Available for Apple or Android™, the app offers easy touchscreen control of the receiver's most critical functions — from switching sources and controlling the volume, to multi-zone playback control and selecting an Internet radio station. You can also use your tablet or PC's web browser to control the player and change settings.

I was an Onkyo man but bought some Klipsch Forte that had a Yamaha RX-V673 with them that I used and fell in love with. I knew I had to try one of the Aventage series and saw the 3040 on sale for a great price. Crutchfield had it to me in two days free shipping with no tax. Gotta love that. It is super easy to setup and the sound is way better than the Onkyos I run. I have become a Yamaha man.

We got it mainly because of the HD radio. It seems to be the only high quality product on the market that you can receive HD radio at home without doing steaming. You can find plenty of such products for cars, not home. It was delivered very fast, packed very well, easy setup. Working well with our Bose speakers. We are very pleased with this purchase.

Couldn't be happier with the our purchase! We replaced an Onkyo that gave us nothing but problems. After reading reviews on the Yamaha Aventage, we decided to change over. It is awesome! Having a USB port and Bluetooth capability has made our sound system much more versatile. The balancing of the speakers gives us a true surround sound. The instructions were fairly good if you have a decent knowledge of systems. The YPAO system of setting up the speaker system was amazing.

    RX-A3040 Receiver

THB from Richmond, TX on 8/6/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to set up, extremely versatile and crisp at higher volumes. The only disappointment was the lack of 110 volt power outlet that switched off when the unit is powered off. This is very beneficial for subwoofers or other components that you always want on or off with the receiver. Everything else is really nice.

Pros: amp output, automatic speaker optimization, high number of input/output options, low THD

    Cons: no switchable power outlet

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    Love the sound.

Pros: Automatic processing is great. TV surround sound quality changes without readjustments are flawless. And, the sound quality is perfection.

Cons: Lacks the volume (approximately a third less volume). This was a disappointment as this is my third Yamaha receiver. However, I never turn the volume full blast and I'll trade blast volume levels for the advantages of this receiver any day..

    Another great Yamaha

Eddie from Lakeside, CA on 5/7/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this just for my home theater as I have another Yamaha that I use for inside and outside speakers (six sets). The sound is great, easy set up. While I do like yamaha products I'm not opposed to trying others and I did buy a Denon which was most costly but after a week I decided to return and try this Yamaha, very happy I did so. Just think the sound is so much better.

    Cons: none

    Impressions after 6 months.

Stanislav from Redding, CA on 4/29/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Generally positive. My main complaints are with the advanced features, the remote, and interface. My main likes are the multi-zone and multiple inputs.

Pros: Full featured, with multiple zones that can be playing from different sources. Sound processing is good (although not great). There are interfaces for both iOS and Android.

Cons: The input source of "from server" is quite buggy and slow. The built in transcoding is limited. The re-scanning of DLNA/UPnP servers is terrible and double entries start appearing (this is on the iOS interface). The remote control, especially for zones, is unusable. The remote control is for last resort or simple turning on and off and volume control. The power, as always for Yamaha, is overstated. The quality is good, but it is not as powerful as you might expect. No good standar

I replaced a Yamaha Aventage RX-A730 with this unit. I wanted more power and per amp outputs. I don't think I'll need another amp after getting this beast connected. I love listening to loud music and this unit delivers volume. I love it. Easy to set up. Good value in terms of power vs cost.

Pros: POWER! Love the video up-conversion.

    Cons: Price

Keith M. from Illinois on 11/20/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall it is a nice receiver. The sound quality is better than my old Denon AVR 2800. It sounds cleaner than my old receiver, however, I don't feel that it goes much louder than my old receiver considering it has 65 watts per channel more power. The on screen menu is pretty easy to follow. It has a lot of options for hook-ups. One thing I was disappointed in was the fact that it does not play video from an iphone thru the USB. It only plays music thru the USB. I had to download the video from the iphone to a laptop and then play it thru the HDMI. Another thing that I don't care for is the pass through feature. You have to choose which source you want to pass thru before turning the receiver off. If you don't do this it won't pass it thru. In other words if you have the source selected to play bluray and you are trying to watch cable tv it will not pass it thru.

Pros: good sound quality lots of connections plenty of power

Cons: pass thru limited USB usage price

Decided to keep my Yamaha DSP-A1

    James from Pennsylvania on 6/25/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My review is based on my music listening experience and why I returned the RX-A3040. I purchased the RX-A3040 as a modern replacement for my Yamaha DSP-A1. I was expecting the same great performance. The DSP-A1 is a 5.1 @ 110 wpc titan weighing in at 50 pounds. It was highly regarded upon release in the early 2000s. When I first listened to music with the RX-A3040 I immediately noticed a difference in sound. Something was off. It sounded anemic compared to the DSP-A1. I went through all the options trying to dial in the sound, but I just couldn't get it. Using the sub to fill in stereo music didn't seem to blend well. It thumped, but didn't sound musical. In Straight stereo mode, vocals were not projected to center stage as they should be. They were widened out toward the left and right speakers. This really bothered me. With the DSP-A1 the sound stage is accurate. You would swear the center channel speaker is working. Listening to music in Pure Direct was nice. The sound stage was proper and pinpoint. I liked that, however in Pure Direct my P* M* 11s still sounded anemic. The RX-A3040 was not using them to their full potential. Also note, the sub is not available in Pure Direct. I wanted to like this amp and keep it; however I could not get past the difference in sound. That was the deal breaker for me. I really appreciate Crutchfield's return policy. It gave me a chance to try to make it work, and believe me I tried; it just didn't turn out that way.

Pros: Loads of features. No complaints there. Pure Direct has accurate sound stage. Two HDMI monitor outs, one for TV and one for projector Extra zone to place speaker outside. Party mode to play all zones together. Able to set power on volume level and max volume level

Cons: Soundtage not pinpoint inStraight stereo mode. Vocals are widened out to left and right speakers instead of projecting sound to the center stage as in Pure Direct mode. Sound is anemic. Does not sound "full", it left me asking "Where's the beef?" Subwoofer does not blend with sound. It's not musical, it just thumps. Soundfields, unlike the DSP-A1, add very little effect. Still leave you feeling at home in your listened area, instead putting you in the audience. Level adjustments make in

    Great Sound

nmzark from Mechanicsburg, PA on 5/1/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My last high end Yamaha receiver lasted 20 years, so I chose Yamaha for my new home theater project. Combined with a room full of Definitive technology speakers and a 75" Samsung has created the system that I had been wanting to build for several years. My sons agree that this system is better than going out to the movies. All that said, I have barely scratched the surface with regard to receiver capability. I look forward to learning to use this unit to its fullest as time permits me to learn and experiment. Overall, I am very happy.

Pros: Great sound, works with the latest and legacy components, and low key look.

Cons: Not as loud as I had expected given the power of the unit, but loud enough for my large theater area.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a Onkyo TX-NR609 with the A3040 Yamaha. The sound is much clearer and the dynamic sound with movies is very good. The auto speaker set up is outstanding. I am using it as a 7.2 speaker system at this time but plan to add a 2 channel amp for 7.2.4 Atmos when more movies are developed with the Atmos sound.

Pros: Impressive sound and ease of use. Looks great too!

    Cons: None

    Couldn't be happier

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I could not be happier with my purchase. Fast delivery and very well packaged. I was nervous it was going to be more difficult to set up. Once I had everything connected the on screen display made it very easy. My surround is absolutely amazing sounding. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants real power combined with quality and accuracy. Thank you Crutchfield.

Pros: Very powerful. Easy to navigate on screen display. Modern technology combined with life like movie sound.

Cons: Buttons on remote are a little hard to read.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very pleased with this receiver! I've had Denon and Onkyo receivers and this one by far is superior in my opinion. It was a breeze to setup and drives my speakers in both home theatre and music modes very well. The on screen menus are great and easy to navigate. Love the network features, Internet radio and streaming DLNA content from my network server work great! I've not upgraded to 4k yet, so I can't comment on that but the HDMI video switching from all my sources works and looks great! I've not found anything negative about the receiver so far.

Pros: Gobs of power, on screen menus and setup, network features, wireless network and plenty of inputs for sources.

Cons: None that I have found other than cost, but you pay for what you get.

    Best receiver

Great receiver, easy setup , power to burn . As always that Yamaha sound that we all love.

Pros: Expensive , but if you want to get into a 9.2 its a lower cost unit. Better than Denon , more mid frequency texture than Marantz.

Cons: Expensive , but any 9.2 system is !

    Great Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Setup was a breeze. Didn't have to look at the manual. The on screen interface is great and makes setup very easy. Once connected to the Network the Atmos update installed. Sound quallity from prior definitive tech speakers I had is amazing. Sonic clarity is great, and the speaker seperation is amazing. Just a small tweak to boost the bass a bit after the YPAO setup was all that was needed.

    Pros: Great sound. Easy setup.

Cons: Cannot use wired and wireless networks simulataneously.

I've had this receiver for over a week and am very impressed by its performance. I purchased the SVS Ultra speaker system to go with this unit and the sound is amazing. The video processing is also top notch as well. I am very pleased with this purchase and haven't found anything negative to report.

    Pros: Great sound and Video.

    Cons: None

    MP from GA on 11/8/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had so many issues with my last few Denon's I decided to try the Yamaha. Getting used to the different interface was a bit of a change from Denon. The Denon line seems to have more customizable settings than the Yamaha but maybe I will find them. For instance, my Denon let me peg my passthrough and the Yamaha what ever input I leave it on seems to be where the it stays which is a bit annoying when you are on music, turn off the AV and get up the next day to watch TV. You have to turn on the receiver and switch it. Hopefully I am missing a setting. From a sound, it sound much better than my old Denon. The different sound halls are easy to select and cool to use. The setup was a breeze. Music sounds top notch. The remote for 2k, absolutely sucks. The buttons and writing is so small you need a magnifying glass. When your old enough to afford this, your eyes are too bad to see the remote. The apple App is excellent. Much better than the Denon. All in all I would recommend this receiver. I'm not sure I could say I was just blown away. I would say the surround sound is awesome. The unit is super easy to use. The setup is a breeze. Music is also is extremely good. Maybe a 4.5 is appropriate due to the remote and passthrough.

Pros: Sound. Ease. Build. IPhone App

    Cons: Remote. Passthrough

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The RX-A3040 replaces my RX-V757. Installation and set up was straight forward. There are plenty of HDMI and digital audio connections. The user CD manual was easy to follow. Programing of FM and internet stations was quite simple. Video programs can enhance your viewing. Audio quality is quite good. YPAO needed some manual tweeking. The unit supplies more than enough power. It really drives my Klipsch KLF30's.It was worth the price

Pros: Great audio quality / power. Ease of setup.

Cons: Aback lit remote would have been nice.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been looking at the Yamaha Aventage line to replace my Yamaha RX-V2065 with as the main receiver. My first one died after 4 days of limited use or I'd have given a five star rating. But Crutchfield sent a new one immediately. This unit is super easy to setup and calibrate. It has every feature needed for multiple zones and setup. The scene feature is brilliant in that I can set my USB to extra bass and treble with 9.2 stereo and set the Bluray to standard decode YPAO levels. The amount of choices one has with this is almost limitless. The extra bass option really makes my sub rattle the walls and the power is plenty to drive my Klipsch Chorus IIs, Academy and inwall R3800Ws. I highly recommend it to any serious audiophile. I do recommend a phono preamp though on ANY receiver that will be used to play vinyl LPs.

Pros: Plenty of power, an insane amount of choices and absolute great sound.

Cons: My first one died after four days; the owners manual can be overwhelming

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to setup. Also think easy to use and alter settings. It was quickly delivered. The combination of the receiver along with new Klipsch reference speakers is a dramatic improvement from my previous home theatre in a box setup. Hard to know how much related to receiver vs speakers, but the sound delivered to all receivers is very well balanced. Can't compare to similar cost receivers, but a major improvement from low level AV receivers IMO. Also like that will be able to do Dolby Atmos in future.

Pros: Excellent quality sound which is very notable difference from low end receivers. Easy to setup.

    Cons: None known.

    Audio Features

Aventage Series: The Aventage line of Yamaha AV receivers is based on the audio design concept of providing a massive, full-bodied sound for movie sound effects and the accurate reproduction of music sources. By expertly harmonizing traditional and advanced technologies, every factor that affects sound quality, from materials & parts construction to circuitry layout, vibration damping, and "fine-tuning" the sound, is handled with no other thought than to achieve the best possible audio quality. As a result, every Aventage receiver has the ability to reproduce the most subtle details of high-definition sound, so that listeners can enjoy a truly high-class sound studio experience at home.

    • High Drive Amp Technology: A fully discrete, high-speed thermal feedback power amplifier helps maximize sound and minimize distortion of the receiver. The Yamaha RX-A3040 AV Receiver is equipped with a 9-channel amplifier rated at 150 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.06% THD, driving 2 channels) which provides high dynamic power with low-impedance drive capability.
    • Symmetrical Power Amplifier Layout: The interior of the unit has been precisely planned, circuit-routed and built so that the left & right channels are physically and electrically isolated. This naturally maximizes channel separation, but also greatly improves signal to noise ratio and helps to achieve a wide, open sound stage.
    • Ultra-High Performance 32-Bit DACs: The Yamaha RX-A3040 uses high performance ESS Sabre32 Ultra 192kHz/32-bit DACs (ES9016) for all channels (except Presence channels; uses ES9006 Sabre Premier 192kHz/24-bit DACs). With ESS patented 32-bit Hyperstream DAC architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator, the ES9016 SABRE32 Ultra DACs deliver spectacular music and music soundtracks with an unsurpassed sound stage, with up to 128 dB dynamic range and 0.0003% (-110 dB) total harmonic distortion and free from clock jitter common in digital audio systems. This AV receiver's sound reproduction is for the most discriminating of listeners.
    • Aluminum Front Panel: The aluminum front panel is used to effectively shield sensitive circuitry from external noise and electronic energy generated by dimmer switches, fluorescent lighting, video monitors and so on. This ensures optimum sonic performance in the widest range of installation environments.
    • H-Shaped Cross Member Frame: The interior of the receiver is reinforced with cross members in an H-shape to provide an extremely rigid and stable frame. This reduces chassis vibration to virtually zero even during high volume output (seemingly even minor vibrations can affect the sound), maintaining the highest audio quality.
    • A.R.T.: The A.R.T. (Anti-Resonance Technology) Wedge 5th foot is in the center of the unit. It dampens vibrations from the power transformer, power transistors and heat sinks, as well as vibrations that might be caused by the sound from the speakers. A.R.T. Wedge 5th foot helps ensure that vibrations do not affect the sound quality.  The AV receiver also employs anti-vibration heatsinks to suppress vibration from transistors and sound pressure.
    • Double Bottom Construction: An additional bottom cover is added for additional support and to improve sound performance at higher volume levels and also support the power transformer and heat sinks.
    • Independent Power Supplies: Independent power supplies are used for the receiver's analog and digital circuitry to prevent digital noise from affecting analog circuitry. These power supplies are highly efficient and result in less power consumption in standby mode.

Intelligent Amplifier Assignment: Intelligent Amp Assignment automatically assigns amplifier channels of the Yamaha AV receiver to certain speakers depending on what functions are selected. You can select from a variety of amplifier configurations.

    • Basic 9ch: In this configuration, up to eleven speakers (Front L/R, Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, & Rear Presence L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. When Cinema DSP 3D is on, the two Rear Presence speakers will be powered and not the two surround back speakers. When Cinema DSP 3D is off, this situation is reversed. Bi-amp and Zone 2/3 speakers are not available in this mode
    • 9ch + 1 Zone: In this configuration, up to eleven speakers (Front L/R, Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver. When Zone 3 is off, all nine channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 3 is on, power to the two surround back channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 3 and the Main Zone will receive seven channels of power. The same or different input sources/volume settings can be applied to both zones. Multichannel sources are mixed down to 2-channels and output to Zone 3. Bi-amp, Zone 2, and Rear Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 9ch + RP: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front L/R, Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver, while the Rear Presence L/R Speakers are powered by an external amplifier. Bi-amp and Zone 2/3 speakers are not available in this mode. Zone 3 pre-outs are also unavailable.
    • 9ch + Front: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Rear Presence L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver, while the Front Presence L/R Speakers are powered by an external amplifier. Bi-amp and Zone 2/3 speakers are not available in this mode. Zone 3 pre-outs are also unavailable.
    • 7ch + 1 Zone: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 2) can be connected to the AV receiver. You can enjoy 7.1ch surround in the main room and 2ch stereo in another room simultaneously. The same or different analog input sources/volume settings can be applied to both zones. Multichannel sources are mixed down to 2-channels and output to Zone 2. Bi-amp and Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch + 2 Zones: In this configuration, up to eleven speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Zone 2, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver. You can enjoy 7.1ch surround in the main room and 2ch stereo in Zone 2 simultaneously. However when Zone 3 is turned-on, the main zone will be limited 5.1ch surround with no surround back speakers (Zone 2 will stay active). The same or different analog input sources/volume settings can be applied to either zone. Multichannel sources are mixed down to 2-channels and output to Zone 2. Bi-amp and Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch + Front + 1 Zone: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver for playback of audio in two separate rooms. The two Front L/R speakers will be powered by an external amp. The same or different input sources/volume settings can be applied to both zones. Zone 2 and Rear Presence speakers are not available.
    • 7ch + FP + RP:  Up to seven speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Surround Back L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver, while Front and Rear Presence Speakers are powered by external amps. Zone 2/3 pre-outs are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch Bi-Amp: Up to seven speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Surround Back L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. The Extra Speaker amplifier channels of the AV receiver are reassigned to bi-amp the front speakers. A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier. Zone 2/3 and Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch Bi-Amp + 1 Zone: Up to nine speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver. The Extra Speaker 1 amplifier channels of the AV receiver are assigned to bi-amp the front speakers. The Extra Speaker 2 amplifier channels of the receiver are assigned to Zone 3. Zone 2 and  Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch Bi-Amp + FP + RP: Up to seven speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Surround Back L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver, while Front and Rear Presence Speakers are powered by external amps. The Extra Speaker amplifier channels of the AV receiver are reassigned to bi-amp the front speakers. Zone 2/3 speaker channels are pre-outs are not available in this mode.
    • 5ch + Front + 2 Zones:  In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Zone 2, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver for playback of audio in three separate rooms. The two Front L/R speakers will be powered by an external amp. The same or different input sources/volume settings can be applied to either zone. Multichannel sources are mixed down to 2-channels and output to Zone 2/3. Presence speakers are not available.

YPAO Automatic System Calibration: The Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer (YPAO) system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First, it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the sound pressure level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room.  Up to 8 listening position measurements are taken to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. Additional YPAO technologies include:

    • EQ: You can select between a varietyYPAO EQ result settings to better suit your speaker setup - Natural (adjusts all speaker to a natural sound; useful when the flat setting sounds too bright), Flat (use when all the speakers in the system have similar sound characteristics), Front (EQs the center and rear speakers to sound like the front; useful when your front speakers are better than the others in the system), Through (does not use the YPAO EQ), or Manual (lets you adjust EQ for each channel manually).
    • Angle Measurement: The direction (angle) of the front speakers, surround speakers, and presence speakers as seen from the listening position is measured, and compensation is applied to the soundfield in order to maximize the effectiveness of the CINEMA DSP soundfield.
    • R.S.C (Reflected Sound Control): The receiver also employs YPAO's Reflected Sound Control (RSC) to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound.
    • DSP Effect Normalization: In addition, YPAO provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the CINEMA DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds.
    • YPAO Volume: Human ears have less sensitivity to high and low frequencies, especially at lower volumes. YPAO Volume applies loudness EQ correction to automatically adjust high and low frequency levels as volume changes. Using the YPAO measurement results, EQ correction is optimized to your system settings and listening environment.
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker setup settings.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Yamaha RX-3040 supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Dolby Atmos (Available soon via Firmware Update): The Yamaha RX-A3040 AV receiver will enhance properly designed systems with Dolby Atmos where sound comes alive from all directions, including overhead, to fill the home theater with astonishing clarity, power, detail and depth. Yamaha will enable Dolby Atmos playback through a firmware update later this fall. The RX-A3040 has the processing power to run a more enveloping 7ch or 9ch Dolby Atmos layout using 5.2.2, 5.2.4 or 7.2.2 configurations utilizing ceiling mounted, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (sold separately). A 5.2.2 speaker configuration is based upon a traditional 5.1 speaker layout complemented by 2 overhead or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers. A 5.2.4 configuration is based on a 5.1 speaker layout with 4 overhead, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers. A 7.2.2 configuration is based on a 7.2 speaker layout with 2 overhead, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers.

    • Ceiling Mounted Speakers: Ceiling speakers are used for maximizing effects in Dolby Atmos listening mode. Install these speakers midway between the position just above the listening position and the position just above the front speakers, or simply install them just above the listening position.
    • Dolby Enabled Speakers: There are two types of Dolby Enabled Speakers; one is to be placed on the top board of other speakers such as front speakers and surround speakers; the other is integrated within the front or surround speakers. Dolby Enabled Speakers are designed with their output facing toward the ceiling to create an elevated audio effect in the Dolby Atmos mode by providing sounds echoing off the ceiling.
Note: Globally, more than 100 cinema blockbusters have been released featuring Dolby Atmos soundtracks in the past two years, and many more are on the way. Major Hollywood studios are partnering with Dolby to create home video versions of current box office releases and previously released favorites for release in 2014 and 2015.

Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your Dolby Digital (Plus/TrueHD) and DTS (ES/HD) movie soundtracks using your existing 7.1ch or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".

Surround Parameters: The Yamaha AV receiver offers the following Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS NEO:6 audio adjustments.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Settings: You can adjust the following parameters in Pro Logic II Music modes: Panorama sends stereo signals to the surround speakers as well as the front speakers for a wraparound effect), Dimension (adjusts the soundfield either towards the front or towards the rear of the room), and Center Width (moves the center channel output completely towards the center speaker or towards the front left and right speakers).
    • Center Image (DTS NEO: 6 Music): This parameter adjusts the front left and right channel output relative to the center channel to make the center channel more or less dominant as necessary.

Cinema DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha Cinema DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers 23 Cinema DSP programs for movies, music, and games.

    • Movie Soundfields: Standard, Spectacle, Sci-Fi, Adventure, Drama, Mono Movie
    • Entertainment Soundfields: Sports, Action Game, Role Playing Game, Music Video
    • Music Soundfields: Hall Munich, Hall in Vienna, Hall in Amsterdam, Church in Freiburg, Church in Royaumont, Chamber, Village Vanguard, Warehouse Loft, Cellar club, The Roxy Theater, The Bottom Line, 9ch Stereo
Note: You can change the receiver's Cinema DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added); you can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB from the receiver or remote control. The AV Controller App for Apple iOS and Android provides even greater adjustment of Cinema DSP soundfields.

Cinema DSP Modes: The Yamaha RX-A3040 AV receiver offers proprietary Yamaha Cinema modes so you can enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using Presence Speakers, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.

    • Cinema DSP HD3: CINEMA DSP HD3 is Yamaha's flagship 3D soundfield playback technology that takes full advantage of the massive amount of acoustic reflection data included in the soundfield data. Cinema DSP HD3 uses four CINEMA DSP engines with advanced 3D processing and supports front & rear presence speaker output (plus Virtual Presence Speaker mode), in order to deliver more than twice as much capability for generating acoustic reflections as conventional CINEMA DSP 3D, in addition to high-frequency playback capability, delivering an utterly natural and powerful spatial soundfield.
    • Virtual Cinema DSP: Virtual Cinema DSP is an algorithm that allows you to enjoy DSP soundfield surround effects while using a minimal two-speaker system. Virtual Cinema DSP lets you enjoy the effects of Cinema DSP surround sound without using surround speakers (handy for use in custom installations where some rooms don't have surround speakers). It can be used with the front/center speakers or even with just the two front left and right speakers. This unit will switch to virtual Cinema DSP mode automatically when surround speakers are unavailable.
    • Virtual Cinema Front: With Virtual Cinema Front, you will enjoy virtual 5-channel surround sound with higher quality and resolution by installing surround speakers at the front. You get more flexibility to arrange your speakers inside the room, along with easy enjoyment of high quality surround sound.
    • Silent Cinema: Silent Cinema makes it possible to hear large-scale surround sound through ordinary headphones. This is a variation of Cinema DSP technology that Yamaha developed to let you listen in private to movies and other multi-channel sources for hours without listening fatigue.

CINEMA DSP Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters of the Cinema DSP modes.

    • DSP Level: You can change the receiver's CINEMA DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB.
    • Delay: Adjusts the delay between the direct sound and the presence soundfield (1-99ms), surround soundfield (1-49ms), and surround back soundfield (1-49ms).
    • Room Size: Adjusts the broadening effect (0.1-2.0) of the presence soundfield, surround soundfield, and the surround back sound field.
    • Liveness: Adjusts the loss (0-10) of the presence soundfield, surround back soundfield, and surround back soundfield.
    • Reverb: Adjusts the delay time of the rear reverberant sound (1.0-5.0s), the delay between the direct sound and rear reverberant sound (0-250ms), and the volume of the reverberant sound (0-100%).

HiFi Sound Modes: The Yamaha RX-3040 offers two HiFi audio modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. These HiFi sound modes lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When either of theses modes are enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channle sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the receiver produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.

    • Straight: 2-channel stereo sources are output from only the front left and right speakers, while multi-channel sources are decoded straight into the appropriate channels without any additional tone or DSP processing.
    • Pure Direct: Turns off the surround and tone circuitry, and dims the front-panel display, allowing sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors of this unit so you can enjoy pure hi-fi sound from 2-channel or multi-channel sources. During Pure Direct playback no sound is output from the subwoofer.

High-Resolution + Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible. In addition, high-bit high-sampling extension up to 96kHz/24-bit can be applied to lossless 44.1/48 kHz content such as from a CD (2-channel PCM) or a FLAC file for further heightening of the musicality in the original content.

Dialogue Lift & Level Adjustment: Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.

Dynamic Range Control: The Yamaha RX-3040 employs two Dynamic Range Control functions.

    • Adaptive DRC: Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialog, vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening when you do not want to disturb others.
    • Dynamic Range: The amount of dynamic range compression applied to bitstream signals is adjustable; Min/Auto is suitable for low volume listening, Standard is typical for home use, and Max doesn't compress the dynamic range at all.

Bass Management: The Yamaha RX-3040 AV receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.

    • Bass & Treble: You can adjust the balance of the high-frequency range (Treble) and low-frequency range (Bass) of sounds output from the receiver' front left and right speakers to obtain a desired tone. You can independently adjust the bass (50Hz) and treble (20kHz) from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5 dB increments. The tone control of the speakers or headphones can be set separately.
    • Extra Bass: You can select whether to play front channel low-frequencies through either of the front speaker or the subwoofer, or through both the subwoofer and front speakers.
    • Subwoofer Trim: The Subwoofer Trim control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is "pushed" toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

Volume Setup: The Yamaha RX-3040 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.

    • Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30 dB to +15 dB in 5 dB steps, or to +16.5 dB (full volume range is -80 dB to +16.5 dB).
    • Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -80 dB to + 16.5 dB in increments of 0.5 dB.
    • Volume Trim: Use this feature to adjust the volume level of each input. This is useful to balance the level of each input to avoid sudden changes in volume when switching between input sources. The range is from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5dB increments.
Note: You can choose to display the "Relative" volume scale (-80 to +16dB) or an "Absolute" volume scale (0 to 97).

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Yamaha RX-3040 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Digital Inputs/Output: The Yamaha AV receiver is equipped with three optical digital inputs, three coaxial digital inputs (rear), and one optical digital output (rear).
    • Stereo RCA Jacks + Phono Input: The receiver is also equipped with nine stereo RCA analog audio inputs (8 rear/1 front), a single stereo RCA analog audio record output, and a stereo RCA Zone 2 output; as well as Phono input (MM) for vinyl playback.
    • 7.1ch Analog Input: This unit has a discrete 7.1-channel analog input for connecting DVD-Audio and Super-Audio CD players or an external decoder.
    • 11.2ch Preamp Outputs: The A/V receiver features 11.2-channel pre-amp outputs (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Front Presence L/R, Rear Presence L/R, and Dual Subs) for connection to external power amplifiers. The pre-amp outputs are variable. The Front and Rear Presence speaker pre-outs are shared with Zone 2 and Zone 3.
    • Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding post terminals for the Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back, Extra Speaker 1 (Zone2/Zone3/R. Presence), and Extra Speaker 2 (Zone2/Zone3/F. Presence/Bi-amp) speaker terminals. The binding posts can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and single banana plugs. These terminals are spaced too far apart for dual banana plugs and a collar surrounding them prevents the use of spade connectors. You can select 8 ohms or 6 ohms in the menu depending on your speaker application. The amplifier supports 4- to 8-ohm Front speakers; and 6- to 8-ohm Center, Surround, Surround Back, Zone 2/F. Presence/Bi-Amp/Extra speakers.
    • Headphone Jack: The Yamaha RX-A3040 is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for connecting a set of headphone, so you can listen to your music privately. Connecting a set of headphones automatically mutes the receiver's speaker outputs. Sound effects applied during playback can also be heard through the headphones.

    Convenience Features

Advanced On-Screen Menu: The RX-3040 offers an on-screen (GUI) menu system through its HDMI output. The simple on-screen display combines text and graphics that make setup and other operations extremely easy. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings. You can set the receiver's on-screen menu language to English, French, Spanish, German, Russian, or Chinese.

Note: Initial setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. Many of the receiver's setup functions can only be found via the on-screen menu and not the front-panel display.

Scene Plus: The Scene Plus function simplifies operation by providing one touch power-on, along with selection of the desired source and the appropriate DSP programs. Scene Plus offers a choice of 12 Scene selections, four of which can be assigned to the second zone in a multi-zone system. Scene Plus can be selected from the receiver's front panel, remote control, on-screen GUI, and even from the Apple iOS or Android app. Pressing a Scene button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button.

Multi-Source/Multi-Zone: The Yamaha RX-A3040 AV receiver allows you to configure a multi-zone audio/video system for your home. The multi-zone configuration feature enables you to set this unit to reproduce separate input sources in the main zone, second zone (Zone 2), third zone (Zone 3) and fourth zone (Zone 4).

    • Zone 2/Zone 3: The receiver's Zone 2/Zone 3 outputs allow you to play the same or different audio/video sources in other rooms of your home. The receiver has dedicated stereo preamp outputs (requires separate amps) for both Zone 2 & 3, or the built-in amplifier can power speakers in the second and/or third zones connected to the Extra Speaker 1 and Extra Speaker 2 terminals. If either Zone 2 or Zone 3 speakers are powered by the receiver, when Zone 2 or Zone 3 is turned on, the receiver's Presence speakers in the main room are turned off.  If both Zone 2 and Zone 3 speakers are powered by the receiver, when Zone 2 and Zone 3 is turned on, the receiver's Presence and Surround Back speakers in the main room are turned off. The analog video monitor outputs (component video, S-video, and composite video) can also be assigned to Zone 2 or Zone 3 (but not both). The volume of Zone 2 or Zone 3 can be controlled by the Yamaha receiver using either configuration or from your add-on integrated amplifier when using the line-output. You can select the following input sources for Zone 2 or 3.
      • Analog Audio/Video Inputs (the video conversion between analog video jacks does not work for the multi-zone output; to watch video in another zone, you need to connect the Zone 2/3 video monitor out in the same way as the video input device)
      • HDMI Audio (2ch PCM only to Zone 2 only)
      • Digital Audio Inputs (Optical/Coaxial; 2ch PCM only to Zone 2 only)
      • AM/FM Tuner (you cannot select different AM/FM radio stations for each zone)
      • USB (including iPod/iPhone) & AirPlay
      • Internet Radio (different network sources cannot be played back in multiple zones at the same time)
      • DLNA/Media Player contents (Unfortunately, you cannot select USB and Network source exclusively for each Zone. For example, if you select "Network Server" for Zone 2/3 when "USB" is selected for the Main Zone, the input source in the Main Zone also switches to "Network Server".)
    • HDMI Switching: The receiver's HDMI Output 2 terminal can be assigned to output audio/video content to Zone 2 or Zone 4 (but not both). Yamaha's advanced HDMI zone switching adds the capability to choose from all analog or digital audio/video sources for playback in Zone 2. However, Zone 4 only offers playback of the same or different HDMI connected audio/video sources. The Zone 2/4 HDMI output can be connected directly to a TV for basic video and 2ch audio playback. It can also be connected to a secondary home theater receiver for multi-channel playback in another zone. An on-screen graphical user interface makes it easy to browse and select content to enjoy from Zone 2 (not Zone 4), no matter what is being played in the main zone.
    • Party Mode: The Party Mode allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone2 & Zone3, simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types - analog or digital). During the party mode, stereo playback is automatically selected for all zones. The Main Zone, Zone2, & Zone3 volume can all be adjusted independently. Utilize this function when you want to play back an audio source as background music in two rooms of your home. Zone 4 is only available when an HDMI input source is selected in the main zone.

Gapless Playback: Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard. Compatible with WAV, FLAC, and ALAC music files via USB or DLNA.

Input Rename: You can rename each input so the display reflects the actual source; choose from 15 templates or create an original name, up to nine characters.

Display Dimmer: You can set the brightness of the front-panel display from -4 to 0.

ECO Mode: When the ECO Mode is enabled, you can reduce the receiver' power consumption by keeping the maximum volume, maximum output power, and front display's brightness low. ECO mode reduces power consumption by approximately 20%.

Timers: The receiver offers a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Power Down function.

    • Sleep Timer: The receiver's Sleep Timer function can be set turn the unit automatically off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.
    • Auto Power Down: If you don't operate the receiver or use the remote for an extended period of time, the unit will automatically go into standby mode (Auto Power Down function). The Auto Power Down feature is selectable from 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours.

Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.

    Remote + Bluetooth Control

Multibrand Remote Control: The receiver comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of this receiver and other HDMI-connected sources (via HDMI CEC). In addition to the receiver, the remote can be programmed to control multiple brands of TVs, Blu-ray players, DVD players/recorders, DVRs, VCRs, etc.

HDMI Control: The Yamaha AV receiver supports the HDMI control function, which allows you to operate external components via HDMI. If your TV or other external components support HDMI control, you can use the remote controls of those devices to operate some of this unit's functions, and to synchronize this unit with the operation of those devices. You can use the following operations with the remote control of any of the connected HDMI Control compatible devices.

    • Power synchronization (On/Standby)
    • Volume control, including Mute
    • Changing the volume of the audio output signal device (either the TV or the receiver)
Note: Not all HDMI-CEC compatible components and functions are guaranteed to work.

AV Controller App: Download Yamaha's free AV Controller App (from Apple's App Store or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iOS (5.0+) or Android (2.1+) device and turn your mobile device into a Wi-Fi enabled remote control for the Yamaha AV receiver. Your Apple iOS or Android device must be connected to the same home network as the Yamaha AV receiver.

    • Basic Remote Functions: The AV Controller App provides the flexibility to control input, volume, mute and power commands from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device.
    • DSP Controller: You can use the AV Controller App to adjust DSP soundfields & parameters to your preference to match the type of music/movie or the mood you want to achieve. There are two modes - (1) Basic, which lets you adjust the sound space by simply pinching the screen in-and-out; and (2) Advanced, which allows detailed adjustment of various parameters such as reverb, initial delay, and liveness.
    • Internal Content Browsing: Using this app on your Apple iOS or Android device, you can browse and listen to content from all internally available sources; such as Internet Radio, Pandora, Spotify, USB devices, and the AM/FM tuner.
    • Wireless Music Streaming: From the app, you can browse music stored on your Apple iOS or Android device and wirelessly transfer the content to the Yamaha A/V receiver for playback.
    • Zone Control: You can control power on/off, source selection, volume and other functions of Zone 2. Customization such as changing zone icon and renaming zone is also supported.
    • Blu-Ray Player: This App not only controls the Yamaha AV receiver, it also controls Yamaha Blu-ray Disc Players, supporting various functions including Play/Pause, Stop, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Previous/Next Track.

AV Setup Guide App: Download Yamaha's AV Setup Guide App (from Apple's App Store or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iPad (iOS 6.0+) or Android tablet (OS 4.0+) for assistance with connecting cables between the Yamaha AV receiver and your source devices as well as AV receiver setup. This app guides you through various settings including speaker connections, TV and source device connections, plus assigning the power amplifier. Once you have completed the setup guide, settings from this app will automatically be copied to your network-connected AV receiver for quick and easy setup.

While I had ordered the yamaha rxa 1050 and it was due to arrive in the next hour i had just received a email from Crutchfield that the yamaha 3040 had dropped 700 dollars and with the added features I called Crutchfield and they said no pproblem just refuse the the 1050 and order the 3040. Not many company's out there that are as easy to deal with as the people at Crutchfield. [ Quinn  Apr 20, 2016 ]
This receiver has everything I need for a great price. I Prefer to keep my business with a company that is relatively local and has always been awesome with service. Crutchfield also has been a great resource to research electronics sometimes better than the manufactures website. [ Michael  Feb 03, 2016 ]
I chose this receiver because of Yamaha's reputation/ good quality, because it was on sale, also because I was looking for something that would last me a long time, plenty of connections, plenty of power. Also because of a Crutchfield advisor recommendation. [ Keith  Jan 08, 2016 ]

As far as I know, no. I think the A3050 has a firmware update with DTS.X and I think the A3060 has it built in. I like this receiver, but I have not noticed a huge improvement with my in ceiling speakers (which the ATMOS update should provide) and the recent firmware update. From my limited understanding it will be awhile before you get a whole lot of benefit from DTS.X and its being widely adopted by blurays and such. My own bluray is already old enough that it may not do the ATMOS well. The A3040 is already three years old, so they may not be too worried about DTS.X for it. [ stanislav  Oct 17, 2016 ]
Thanks for your question. Bluetooth is not included with this receiver but is available as an option. We have several Bluetooth adapters available ranging from $49.99 to $199.99. On the product page go to the "Accessories" tab and under "Wireless Adapters" you will see the ones that are available. Hope that helps. [ Kenny  Jun 21, 2016 ]  Staff
yes it plays music files. I do it all the time. [ Keith  Apr 15, 2016 ]
The USB will play anything the Receiver can normally handle (music, video and photos). However, this does not mean it plays all formats (you explicitly mention flac, a lossless format that is not as widespread as MP3). It does not play back flac, as I recall. Generally, it is going to be MP3 for the USB, for music, or MP4 or MPEG for video and JPG for photos. Using an iPod is quite different. The iPod itself is doing the decoding. The Yamaha does support various devices streaming TO it, which also is useful. (Think DNLA servers and such). It is not a computer and the amount of processing power they can put on this is necessarily limited. Or your computer can stream directly to it, via an internal network. The applet for control (Android or iOS) is vastly easier than using the remote. There are too many functions for the remote to work well and the remote has no backlighting. [ stanislav  Apr 15, 2016 ]
According to the manual: The unit supports playback of WAV (PCM format only), MP3, WMA, MPEG-4 AAC, FLAC and ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) files (1- or 2-channel audio only). The unit is compatible with sampling rate of up to 192 kHz for WAV and FLAC files, 96 kHz for ALAC files, and 48 kHz for other files. The unit supports gapless playback of WAV, FLAC and ALAC files. Digital Rights Management (DRM) contents cannot be played back. I have personally successfully played back MP3 and WMA files from a USB thumb drive. Cory [ Eugene Cory  Apr 15, 2016 ]

Phono amp, yes. Phone amp, no. A turntable needs no pre-amp when attached to the phono imputs. [ Thomas  Aug 05, 2015 ]
Phone amp ? It is compatible with your apple phone for WIFI applications to play I tunes , apple play off your phone , but a amp I do not know about that, [ Duane  Aug 05, 2015 ]

Yes. I run my laptop through hdmi on occasion. [ KENNETH COONS  May 24, 2015 ]
Yes. I have 5.1 in living room and zone 2 on porch, zone 3 by pool. The iPad app is great and what I use (can also be done with remote). The separate volumes allow for perfect adjustment in the backyard. I have another pair of speakers in kitchen (open floor plan home) which makes it 7.1 inside. Great sounding system but unfortunately not truly 4 zone like some of the lit used to say. Bought it to also play movies on big screen in backyard but second hdmi can only be run via zone 2, or via zone 4 with external app added, which turns off current zone two speakers. [ PATRICK  Apr 27, 2015 ]
I believe so, but I would definitely consult the owner's manual. The number of individual zones advertised by Yamaha for this receiver is actually less that it may appear. There are dozens of caveats in the directions that actually limit the possible combinations you can have UNLESS you have another separate AMP to go with this receiver. Great receiver. The only disappointment is far less individual zone combos/controls than advertised. And extremely confusing/poorly written instructions on zone setup. [ Timothy  Apr 27, 2015 ]
Hi, James: Crutchfield sent me this question because I purchased this Yamaha equipment. Unfortunately, I don't know for sure if I can answer it. But I'll try! Download the manual from the Yamaha site. Check out pages 97 through 102 -- it indicates how the unit can play different sources to different zones, and control the volumes in the different zones. Also, the manual illustrates configurations for the nine amps (speakers) starting on page 25, continuing through page 32. In some configurations, an external amplifier may be required. It took me a while and a lot of reading and re-reading the manual, but I'm finally getting the hang of using the unit. Plan on spending some time reading the manual because it will (eventually) explain how it can work for you. Good luck! [ Thomas  Apr 27, 2015 ]
    I do not know [ Duane  Apr 27, 2015 ]
Yes. I am using just two zones, but you can use more is my understanding. You can play the same source or a different one in each zone. The volume and input selection is controlled independently for each. [ Richard  Apr 27, 2015 ]
Do you need to set on 220, that's for Europe, well I guess here in USA we use 120vts. [ Luis  Dec 10, 2014 ]
