Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A770
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Awesome! Works as advertised! I would definitely buy this one again
Yamaha's AVENTAGE RX-A770 delivers a thrilling home theater experience when you match it to a 4K Blu-ray player and compatible display. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding give you 360-degree surround sound to match the stunning Ultra HD picture. Music lovers will appreciate this receiver's ability to play different high-resolution audio formats through the front-panel USB port or from a networked computer. And if you're into vinyl, a phono input provides an easy connection for your turntable.
For their AVENTAGE-series receivers, Yamaha uses custom-designed parts with anti-resonance technology to reduce distortion caused by vibration. A rigid H-shaped frame adds stability to cut out chassis vibration almost completely. A specially designed fifth foot at the center of the receiver's base dampens internal and external vibrations, and an aluminum front panel further reduces resonance to maximize sound quality.
The RX-A770's meticulous construction, symmetrical amplifier layout, and low-jitter digital circuitry all work together to give you accurate sound with precise stereo imaging and a wide, natural soundstage.
Built-in support for streaming services like Spotify®, TIDAL, and Pandora® lets you play and control your favorite music directly through the receiver. Apple® AirPlay® lets you stream from a compatible iOS® device, and Bluetooth adds even more streaming flexibility. You can even stream audio from the receiver to a set of Bluetooth headphones — great for late-night listening.
Setting up a whole home wireless music system has never been easier. This receiver's built-in MusicCast technology lets you add audio playback in up to nine additional rooms with compatible Yamaha wireless speakers and sound bars.
MusicCast lets you stream music from your personal collection, internet radio, and streaming services. You can also play Bluetooth sources, sound from your TV, and even CDs and vinyl. The free MusicCast Controller app makes it easy to access your music and control what you have playing in different rooms.
The RX-A770 has outputs for nine speakers, giving you a few different configuration options. You can set up a standard 7.2-channel surround sound system or a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos system, and use the extra two speaker outputs to power a pair of speakers in a second room. That way, you can enjoy stereo music in Zone 2 while others watch TV in the main room.
When Zone 2 is turned on, Yamaha's Intelligent Amp Assign feature automatically redirects the power to your stereo setup in Zone 2, giving you five-channel surround sound in the living room.
If you're happy with a simple 5.2-channel surround sound system, you can also use one of the extra sets of speaker outputs to bi-amp your front speakers for more powerful sound.
Awesome! Works as advertised! I would definitely buy this one again

Average Customer Review(s):
Awesome! Works as advertised! I would definitely buy this one again
My first "modern" receiver, though I honesty don't know why we bother with FM anymore. Love the setup app, the AV controller app and the tremendous connectivity options. I'm driving bi-amped Polk S-60 mains, S35 7 driver center, S20 surrounds and SW-12 Sub. Flawless sound.
Pros: Multi Zone enabled
Cons: No composite or component video out for my ancient projector.
Performing perfectly, and when I get everything "dialed in" I'll like it even better. Upgrade from my 12 year old Denon, plus, I finally join the world of 4K. Couldn't be more pleased.
Best amplifier I've ever owned. Had problems with an onkyo after 3 years. Too much to fix it. And decided to go with Yamaha. Best decision I've ever made. The atmos is great. Went with the elec speakers and wow. Very happy with the purchase and very happy with crutchfield support.
Replacing an older Yamaha, so many improvements. The on screen menus are very helpful.
Pros: Great sound, love the differences between Chamber, Munich Hall, etc. So many internet stations! So many ways to input music.
Cons: Haven't found how to sort internet stations by genre, but I figure there has to be a way. Could give you guys a call I guess!
Seems like a quality receiver. I picked it because I've read that it's less problematic than other brands. So far I've only use mostly the bluetooth feature to play the music off my cellphone, which I enjoyed a lot.
Pros: Simple to use.
Cons: Nothing yet.
This unit replaced my older V-661 which wasn't compatible with the latest technology, but still a fine AV receiver. The RX-A770 has it all, Clean, 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos,. Plenty of power to push my Definitive Technology surround system. 4K movies look and sound awesome. This is the way to go.
Great product. Easy to install
this is an outstanding product! simple and easy to use, sounds and looks great. can not be more satisfied. i have used Denon and Sony previously and am very happy with the move to Yamaha. im running 5.1, 2 rooms in the house, plus outdoor speakers on this one avr.
Pros: quick setup app is nice zone 2 and multi amp is amazingly easy and works as expected.
Excellent receiver. Great interface and great app.
So far, all is ok. I haven't used it yet or even hooked it up. I'll update this when I get it running.
Pros: Crutchfield shipping was fast.
Cons: Was a little worried about the condition of the shipping box? It Had some pretty good drop damage to it?
This is a replacement for an older, lower level Yamaha. Once operational it was obvious to my wife and me that this was a superior product. Our Tv picture seemed better than ever and the sound quality, especially dialogue in programs was significantly better--an important feature for our aging ears.
I've only been using this receiver for a couple of weeks, but so far, it's fantastic!! It replaced a 17-year old Sony receiver that still works fine, but was made before the advent of HDMI. I chose this receiver over certain other brands and models because it has specific features I wanted, like a phono input and capability for a second stage (remote speakers). I have speakers wired in another room that needed to be fed by the receiver, so it was important the receiver include that function. It's probably my imagination, but I swear the picture quality of my TV got much better once the receiver was hooked up. And the sound is spectacular. I have it powering twin Infinity towers, a Bose center speaker, and two Bose surround speakers, along with a Klipsch sub. The surround sound quality is better than it's ever been.
Pros: Many features. Superior picture and sound quality.
Cons: A bit complicated to set up, but I expect familiarity will come with more use.
This receiver is top notch. It's all you can ask for in one box. Worked good with my projector. I like the ap that comes with it to control the music. You can also use it to control the receiver. Over all, a 5 star product.
Pros: 7.1 channel acceptability Speaker adjustment Music Ap
Cons: YPAO system
I am impressed with this receiver. Sounds good. It's very easy to setup. The quality of the on screen display is great!! Would defiantly recommend it.
Pros: On screen menus.
This was for my husband and he loved it!! He said that he has never had a receiver that sounded so clear and had all the functions that this one has. We would recommend this receiver to anyone that is in the market for one.
Pros: Excellent sound, function, remote, and all around excellent product.
I replaced an older Sony AV Receiver with the Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A770 specifically to help stream music and tie into a smart TV/Blu-ray system. Setup went very well and the sound is better than the Sony. It hooked into my internet connection first time through and all systems are now GO.
Pros: Good sound and easy to setup
Cons: none yet
Upgraded my previous Yamaha Receiver htr 5940 receiver to this one and am happy about the upgrade. Great sound I love Yamaha
Pros: Is a good receiver for a decent price
The Yamaha RX-A770 is everything I was hoping for. Driving Axiom Epic 60 350 speaker system and Bose 251 exterior speakers the sound is awesome. The iPhone apps make operation a breeze. Tech support was knowledgeable and professional
Everything I was looking for. Rachael was awesome to work with. She listened to everything I was asking about and made great suggestions
Sound is very good and easy to balance 5 speakers.
I have had many Yamaha receivers other the years and this is the best one yet! Have 1 connected to 5.1 Polk system (4 in wall, 1 center channel, Klipsch powered sub) with 4K television and 1 connected to 7 zones of audio throughout house in 7 ch stereo mode. Can easily select either receiver in Yamaha app and send audio from any Apple device via AirPlay to either source. Receiver, TV and Apple TV remotes all controlled each other through HDMI connection, no setup. Yamaha auto setup worked very easy and identified an out of phase speaker i accidentally connected wrong. DSP all works well. Plenty of power, loud, clear audio. Most easily customizable and versatile receiver I've owned in 20 years. Haven't had time to try most other features yet but would buy again in heartbeat.
Excellent AVR. Using it to drive Klipsch 5.1 speakers. Inputs: Apple TV, Oppo UDP. Will likely add PS 4 Pro at some point. All content is from disc via Oppo UDP or high speed internet streaming, including 4K Netflix. The automatic EQ and speaker level adjustment (YPAO) works well. The AVR is essentially invisible in the home theater/audio system which is exactly what you want. It does the job without any drama. The sound is outstanding. I can turn on the unit and control volume with the LG TV remove via and ARC HDMI input on the OLED TV.
Pros: YPAO automatically sets EQ and individual speaker levels with microphone. Outstanding sound customized for the room and listening/viewing position. Solid build. Great price for features and power. User interface is intuitive. Like "Scene" buttons on remote that turn on unit and select input with a single click.
Cons: Remote control is a bit busy with a multitude of tiny buttons.
Everything works great, music cast app is awesome
Four stars which I hope to revise later. The first Yamaha developed a problem shutting down with a "Check Speaket Wire" fault. Speakers checked out fine. It was getting worse Crutchfield guickly sent me a replacement. I view this as a isolated problem this Yamaha does not have a fault pattern. Looking forward to the replacement in the short time my unit was operating it was the best AVR I have ever owned. I will be back with a full review of the replacement.
Pros: Runs cool, plenty of power, 2way Bluetooth, great U/I, goes out to look for updates to it's software.
Out of the box... powered up ok. Connected one HDMI, and 5.1 speaker arrangement (all low / no voltage connections). Powered up... within ~5-10 seconds, powered down on its own. After ~5 cycles of that... no longer powered up at all. CF tech support immediately told me it was likely a short and processed a replacement. Replacement was sent ground freight, which annoyed me ... you'd think they'd want to get me a replacement ASAP. I will provide an additional review (hopefully with more positive comments) upon setup and use of the replacement unit.
Cons: Complete power failure within 5 min of use.
Excellent AVR and price - exactly what I read on the specs and expect from Yamaha, and as always with outstanding delivery and support from Crutchfield I have come to count on !
Pros: Overall great features, detailed manual on disc, solid build quality.
Cons: Definitely needs sub-woofer to experience quality bass response, and Pure Direct function does not activate sub-still investigating if set up issue or problem with AVR.
I am really impressed with this reciever! The clarity and separation of sounds is a joy! Watching movies is a whole different experience. I had a pioneer 1123 and this reciever makes the subwoofer and rear speakers sound so much better, loud and clear then silent, to the point it can startle you which is great for movies. Music with the MusicCast system is also easy to navigate, save your favorites, and sounds amazing! I have thus reciever paired with Klipsch premier reference speakers also bought from Crutchfield, a great combination, as recommended by my advisor Chad.
Pros: Clarity, easy adjustments, YPAO calibration, music, movies
I couldn't be happier with Crutchfield or my Yamaha 770 fast delivery and easy set up
Pros: Great receiver very satisfied.Crutchfield is the best.
This Yamaha RX-A770 replaces a 4 year old Marantz SR5008 that had a bad surround channel. I particularly like the large informative display on the receiver compared to the port hole display on the Marantz which is so small that it was impossible to see from my listening position. Setup was a breeze and connecting to my NAS was painless and automatic. As I use Zone 2 for my deck speakers to listen to FLAC music files, I appreciate the ability to save separate sources for both Main and Zone 2. I was bit concerned about how the receiver would sound with 2.1 FLAC music in the living room compared to the Marantz, but intial listening leaves me with no complaints. The app is well thought out and the receiver responds quickly to commands. The preset movie DSP's (SciFi, Action, etc.) make it easy to dial in the most suitable one depending on what you're watching. Well done, Yamaha!
Pros: Easy to set up, a lot of features for the price.
Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A770! This is an upgrade from my previous receiver, Yamaha RX-2700; WOW! It has great, clean power sound! With addition of WiFi/blue-tooth capability, using my cell phone app makes the experience of technology so much better! Sound separation to each channel is outstanding! I'm very pleased at the price point value; with all the models available, this one targeted my need perfectly!
Pros: Does what more expensive receivers do for less money. I really like my choice!
Cons: Doesn't have a 120 volt switched outlet on the back for plugging a sup-woofer into. I miss the amber lighting in the front digital panel that was a trademark for years of Yamaha.
The Yamaha RX-A770 is an great receiver! The quality of both sound and video are excellent. I have it also connect to speakers in my back yard and am able to play xm radio in the back yard and still have full 5.1 sound for my tv inside.
Pros: - full 4K support - Yamaha IOS APP - second room support
Cons: - none
The video connectivity is what sold me on this unit. It supports all 4K formats and should be somewhat futureproof. I have cable box, Xbox One S, PS4 Pro, Nintendo Switch, and NES Classic all connected to HDMI ports. Will be hooking up my turntable this weekend. HDR passes through nicely for the Xbox and PS4. After easy setup, I did manually raise the volume on the rear speakers on my 5.2 setup. Good price point and a solid receiver.
Pros: Great sound with plenty of power for my "man room". No regrets with this purchase.
Cons: Have yet to take advantage of the 7.2 setup and use of Atmos. Not sure if I using this receiver up to its capabilities.
This receiver has Endless Possibilities I am very happy with my new unit I would recommend this to anyone the sound is very crisp and clear
Great A/V receiver This my third Yamaha, this is the best yet

Aventage Series: The Aventage line of Yamaha AV receivers is based on the audio design concept of providing a massive, full-bodied sound for movie sound effects and the accurate reproduction of music sources. By expertly harmonizing traditional and advanced technologies, every factor that affects sound quality, from materials & parts construction to circuitry layout, vibration damping, and "fine-tuning" the sound, is handled with no other thought than to achieve the best possible audio quality. As a result, every Aventage receiver has the ability to reproduce the most subtle details of high-definition sound, so that listeners can enjoy a truly high-class sound studio experience at home.
Intelligent Amplifier Assignment: Intelligent Amp Assignment automatically assigns amplifier channels of the Yamaha AV receiver to certain speakers depending on what speaker layout has been selected and what content is being played back. You can connect up to nine speakers to the AV receiver and it will determine which seven speakers need amplification. You can choose from a variety of amplifier speaker layout configurations.
YPAO Sound Optimization: This unit employs the YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimizer), which automatically adjusts the output of the speakers based on placement, performance, and the room's acoustic characteristics. Yamaha's YPAO system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters; such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the volume level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. Using the supplied Optimizer Microphone, YPAO performs the following checks and makes appropriate adjustments to give you the best possible sound from your system.
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker, crossover, & EQ settings.
Compatible Digital Audio Formats: The AV receiver supports the following stereo & multichannel digital audio formats through its HDMI jacks and optical/coax digital inputs.
|Digital Audio Connector||Audio Signal Type||Audio Signal Format|
|HDMI||2Ch Linear PCM||2ch, 32-192kHz, 16/20/24-bit|
|Multichannel Linear PCM||8ch, 32-192kHz, 16/20/24-bit|
|DSD||2-6ch, 2.8824MHz, 1-bit|
|Bitstream||Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS ES, DTS 96/24|
|High Definition Audio Bitstream||Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, DTS Express|
|Optical/Coaxial||2Ch Linear PCM||2ch, 32-96kHz, 16/20/24-bit|
|Multichannel Linear PCM||6ch, 32-96Hz, 16/20/24-bit|
|Bitstream||Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS ES, DTS 96/24|
Immersive Surround Sound: The Yamaha RX-A770 AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats, including Dolby Atmos & DTS:X.
Post Decoding Formats: The Yamaha AV receiver supports Dolby Surround, Neural:X, and DTS Neo:6 (Music/Cinema) to enhance 2-channel and multichannel decoding formats.
Cinema DSP 3D: The actually measured soundfield data in recorded soundtracks contain the information of the height of the sound images. Cinema DSP 3D mode achieves the reproduction of the accurate height of theses sound images so that it can create the accurate and intensive stereoscopic soundfield in your listening room. Yamaha Cinema DSP 3D lets you enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using 5.1 speaker setup, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.
Cinema DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha Cinema DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialog, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers 17 Cinema DSP programs for movies, music, and games.
Note: You can change the receiver's Cinema DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB.
CINEMA DSP Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters of the Cinema DSP modes.
HiFi Sound Modes: The Yamaha RX-A770 offers two HiFi audio modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. These HiFi sound modes lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When either of theses modes are enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channel sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the receiver produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.
Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, AAC, & Bluetooth (SBC/AAC). The Yamaha receiver's Compressed Music Enhancer feature is even optimized for Bluetooth wireless audio streaming. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.
Dialogue Level & Lift: Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialog and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening. Dialogue Lift adjust the perceived height of dialogue sounds. If the dialogue sounds as if it in coming from below the TV screen, you can raise its perceived height by increasing this setting.
Dynamic Range Control: The Yamaha RX-A770 employs two Dynamic Range Control functions.
Bass Management: The Yamaha RX-A770 AV receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.
Volume Setup: The Yamaha RX-A770 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.
Audio Outputs: The Yamaha RX-A770 AV receiver is fitted with binding-post speaker terminals and dual mono-sub/LFE outputs, along with a front-panel headphone jack.
Phono Input: The Yamaha RX-A770 AV receiver features a dedicated Phono (MM) input for connecting your turntable and listening to your vinyl records.
Front-Panel Aux Input: The RX-A770 features a front-panel Aux input (3.5mm) for connecting your portable audio player with a headphone output.
HDMI 2.0a: The Yamaha RX-A770 AV receiver is fitted with six HDMI 2.0a inputs (5 rear/1 front) and one HDMI 2.0a output that support the latest HDMI standards; such as 4K/60Hz, HDR (High Dynamic Range), 4:4:4 color subsampling, & Wide Color Gamut (BT.2020). The receiver's HDMI 1-3 inputs and HDMI output also support HDCP 2.2 for full support of today's 4K content from Ultra HD Blu-ray, online video services (like Amazon & Netflix), and future TV broadcast services.
Note: Use a premium high-speed 18Gbps HDMI cable for the best 4K/HDR performance.
HDR (High Dynamic Range): The Yamaha RX-A770 support HDR (high dynamic range) Video - including HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and Hybrid Log-Gamma. HDR (High Dynamic Range Video) provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth.
Note: Dolby Vision and Hybrid Log-Gamma requires a firmware update.
4K Video Upscaling: The Yamaha RX-A770 is capable of outstanding upscaling and i/p conversion quality. This AV Receiver will upscale video signals from analog (480i only)-to-HDMI and HDMI-to-HDMI, up to 4K. This means a much better picture with HDTVs capable of 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K resolution.
Other HDMI Features: The Yamaha RX-A770 AV receiver's HDMI connectivity also offers 3D video pass-through, ARC (Audio Return Channel), Deep Color & x.v.Color support, as well as an auto LipSync function.
Analog Video Inputs: The RX-A770 AV receiver is outfitted with one composite video and one component video input. Both the composite and component video inputs only support 480i. These analog video inputs are upscaled (up to 4k) and upconverted to HDMI out to your TV (the receiver has no analog video outputs).
Background Audio/Video: The Background Video feature allows you to watch a video source while listening to a different audio source. With the RX-A770, you can select any video input (HDMI or analog) and listen to audio from any of the receiver's audio sources (including AM/FM tuner, Aux input, USB, Network, or Bluetooth).
Wired or Wireless Network Connection: The Yamaha AV receiver is fitted with a RJ-45 Ethernet (LAN) port to connect the receiver to your home network. The unit also offers built-in WiFi (IEEE 802.11 b/g/n; 2.4GHz) for a wireless network connection; WPS, WEP, WPA-PSK (TKIP), WPA-PSK (AES), WPA2-PSK (AES) security protection is supported. Either network connection gives the receiver access to your DLNA music server, AirPlay, MusicCast, and various online music services. Wireless network setup can be done via WPS button, Access Point Scan, Manual Setting, PIN Code, or even through your Apple iOS device (5.0+).
Note: Network setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. The receiver's network setup cannot be accessed through its front-panel display.
Online Music Services: The Yamaha RX-A770 offers access to Internet Radio through its built-in Airable by TuneIn; your Spotify Premium account through Spotify Connect on your Apple iOS or Android device; and your Pandora, TIDAL, or Deezer music account through Yamaha's MusicCast app.
DLNA + WiFi Direct: The Yamaha RX-A770 AV receiver supports music streaming from WiFi-enabled devices (via WiFi Direct) and DLNA certified devices (via your home network). Supported music files include - WAV/FLAC/AIFF (up to 192kHz/24-bit), ALAC (up to 96kHz/24-bit), MP3/WMA/AAC (up to 48kHz/320kbps), and DSD (2.8/5.6MHz).
AM/FM Tuner: The Yamaha RX-A770 AV receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. The RX-A770 lets you store up to 40 AM/FM station presets. This can be done manually or automatically (auto-preset tuning). You can set this receiver to automatically match FM broadcast frequencies in stereo, or convert the frequency to monaural for weaker stations. An indoor FM wire antenna and AM loop antenna are included with the receiver.
Web Control: When connected to your network (with Internet connection), you can control the Yamaha AV receiver with the web control screen displayed in your PC's web browser. You'll be able to control functions such as, Power On/Off & Volume. Internet Explorer 9.x, 10.x, 11.x, or Safari 7.x is recommended for web browser.
Firmware Updates: New firmware will be released for the purpose of additional features or product improvements. Firmware updates can be downloaded from the Yamaha website. If this unit is connected to the Internet, the receiver will indicate when a new firmware version is available and you can download the firmware via the network connection. Firmware updates normally take approximately 20 minutes or longer. Check Yamaha's Support Download Site for the most recent firmware updates.

Built-in Bluetooth: The Yamaha RX-A770 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR) for wireless communication between Bluetooth-enabled audio source devices, headphones, and speakers. The AV receiver can act as a Bluetooth receiver in order to wirelessly stream music from an audio device, or a Bluetooth transmitter in order to wirelessly stream music to a set of BT-enabled headphones/speakers.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Yamaha AV receiver.
USB Port: This AV receiver is equipped with a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy a variety of music files stored on a USB mass storage class memory device, such as a USB thumbdrive or portable digital audio player (not compatible with USB HDDs). You'll be able to quickly select the room or rooms you want to listen to music in, select the source or sources you want to listen to, browse music content from your music library and online music services or Internet Radio, plus control music playback functions.
AV Setup Guide App: Download Yamaha's AV Setup Guide App onto your Apple (iOS 6.0+) iPad or Android (OS 4.0+) tablet for assistance with connecting cables between the Yamaha AV receiver and your source devices as well as AV receiver setup. This app guides you through various settings including speaker connections, TV and source device connections, plus assigning the power amplifier. Once you have completed the setup guide, settings from this app will automatically be copied to your network-connected AV receiver for quick and easy setup.
Remote Control: The receiver comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of this receiver and other HDMI-connected sources (via HDMI CEC). This newly designed remote control features large buttons for enhanced ease of use.
HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control): The Yamaha AV receiver supports HDMI-CEC, which synchronizes the operation of this unit with other HDMI-CEC devices when connected via HDMI. When the AV receiver is connected to a HDMI-CEC compatible TV, they will turn ON/OFF together and you can use the TV remote to control the volume of the receiver. HDMI-CEC also provides playback functionality with other components, such as your Blu-ray player. For example, you can use the receiver's remote control to operate player functions like Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, or Stop.
Note: Not all HDMI-CEC compatible components and functions are guaranteed to work.
Remote Jacks: The receiver has remote input and remote output minijack terminals (3.5mm) for use with external IR receivers and compatible Yamaha components.
12V Trigger Output: The RX-A770 has a programmable minijack output to send a 12-Volt DC turn-on signal to another component that accepts a 12V trigger, such as a power amplifier or motorized projection screen. The trigger is programmed either to work with a specific zone (main room or Zone2) or a specific source.
Alexa Compatible (Firmware Update Required): Alexa-enabled devices (including the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Tap and Echo Show) will soon be able to control key functions of a MusicCast system using voice commands. A firmware update (available early 2018), will be available for download that allows key functions of MusicCast products to be controlled using your voice through Alexa-enabled devices (sold separately).
Note: You will need an Alexa-enabled device (Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Tap, or Echo Show - all sold separately) to operate certain functions of your MusicCast products via voice-command. The MusicCast components and the Alex-enabled devices must be on the same network.
Advanced On-Screen Menu: The RX-A770 offers an on-screen (GUI) menu system through its HDMI output. The simple on-screen display combines text and graphics that make setup and other operations extremely easy. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings. You can set the receiver's on-screen menu language to English, French, Spanish, German, Russian, or Chinese. The front-panel display only offers English.
Note: Initial setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. Many of the receiver's setup functions can only be found via the on-screen menu and not the front-panel display.
Scene (for One-Touch Start): The RX-A770 features four Scene buttons on the front-panel and remote to make operating the receiver easier. Pressing a Scene button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button; such as powering on the receiver, switching to the appropriate source input, and recalling the selected DSP surround mode.
Gapless Playback: Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard. Compatible with WAV, FLAC, AIFF, and ALAC music files via USB or DLNA.
Favorites: You can register up to 40 favorite USB music files, internet radio stations, and/or other network music content as shortcuts ("Favorites") and access them directly. Only the input source will be registered for Bluetooth and AirPlay.
Input Rename & Skip: The receiver automatically creates an input source name that is displayed on the front-panel screen for connected HDMI-compatible sources. You can also manually rename each input so the display reflects the actual source. If an input isn't being used, you can hide it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources.
Display Dimmer: You can set the brightness of the front-panel display from -4 to 0.
ECO Mode: When the ECO Mode is enabled, you can reduce the receiver' power consumption by keeping the maximum volume, maximum output power, and front display's brightness low. ECO mode reduces power consumption by approximately 20%.
Timers: The receiver offers a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Power Down function.
Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.

Advised by Chad that even compared to Denon, this receiver would be a good match to my Klipsch Reference Premier speakers. And the ability for the receiver to transmit bluetooth sound to my bluetooth headphones, most receivers can't do that. [ Dean Aug 03, 2017 ]

Dolby EX and Dolby Atmos are the main reasons. I will be converting a 7.1 system to a 5.1.2 system. Also this is a purchase for the new Xbox One X coming out in November which will give me the 4k support I need for the 4K audio and video. [ James Jul 23, 2017 ]

Best future-proof A/V receiver. [ Michael Jun 13, 2017 ]
Available and the price. [ John Jun 09, 2017 ]
I've tried all brands of AV receivers. I believe the Yamaha receivers have the best sound and the HDMI video pass-through is the best. I also wanted HDMI upscaling and this unit offers the feature. I am planning to buy the Yamaha RX-A870 (2 HDMI outputs) for another room, once the unit is available. These units are replacing older Yamaha units. In the past month, I've tried new AV receivers from Onkyo, Denon and Sony. They are no match on sound quality. Yamaha gives the best sound. [ G Jun 08, 2017 ]
I have two other Aventage Receivers, an RX-X750 & an RX-A550. I love these receivers. They are the best I have ever had for reliability and the number of features makes them stand above most other receivers I have seen. But since I now have a Samsung KS9500 65" TV and an Oppo UDP-203 Blu-ray player, I need to upgrade the audio side for the newest from Dolby & DTS. I'm running Definitive Pro Cinema 800 series speakers with this and this receiver pairs well with them. [ J Jun 07, 2017 ]
Seems logical to me. I have not set my speakers up to take advantage of atoms. [ Clifton Apr 04, 2018 ]
Each speaker has an impedance (resistance) that ensures tbe right load on the amplifier. Always try to match the speaker to the amplifier to optimize power [ Alan Mar 05, 2018 ]
The RX-A770 has 7 channels of built-in amplification to power your home theater speakers. If you want to add an external amp to power the speakers instead, you'll need to step up to the RX-A870 which adds the multi-channel RCA pre-amp outputs: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_022RXA870/item.html For additional assistance and personalized recommendations, feel free to contact us directly by phone or through our online chat service: https://www.crutchfield.com/support/ContactUs.aspx [ Ryan Feb 21, 2018 ] Staff
The RX-A770 does not have the pre-amp I/O's to use with external theater amps. You will have to get at least the RX-A1070 to get pre-amp I/O's [ KENNETH Feb 19, 2018 ]
SP1 is for front height speakers. Sp2 is for rear or B speakers in another room. [ JAMES Jan 26, 2018 ]
Within the YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimizer) menu settings, you can choose from 3 different EQ modes: Natural--adjusts all speakers to a natural sound; useful when the flat setting sounds too bright Flat--useful when all the speakers in the system have similar sound characteristics Front--EQs the center and rear speakers to sound like the front; useful when your front speakers are better than the others in the system For more details or to discuss further, please feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat.
