Best receiver for the price.
unit sounds great and looks good, very happy with my purchase
Pros: the sound fills the room and the bass selections give you a choice of how you want the bass to sound.
Cons: no cons
Very happy with this receiver. Bluetooth works fantastic. My FM reception with this receiver is excellent. This receiver works as good as something you would pay twice the money for.
That was so easy to install. I replaced an old unit from the 90s and after I used the Yamaha optimizer I can now hear what I had been missing all those years although I did have my old system tuned when I purchased it. And BTW the presales support by Crutchfield was superb and the reason I purchased from them.
Pros: Really easy to install and optimize.
Cons: Wish I could have just audio out to the TV and control the TV input via the TV's HDMI ports.
Works and sounds great. Product came quick and customer service was very helpful
It's just a week in to using the receiver, so my experience is limited but positive. Installation was a snap - pretty obvious. The powered subwoofer requirement held up calibration until I received and installed the subwoofer amplifier and pulled new cable. The surround setup/tuning feature was really nice and helped troubleshoot the subwoofer settings. I use a remote repeater, with most components in a separate room. That makes the surround sound adjustments a two person task. The IOS app for the manual and setup is a nice feature.
Pros: Easy setup Automated surround tuning Online user manual and app
Cons: Independently powered subwoofer requirement Remote preselects don't fit needs
Has plenty of power at 70 wpc. Don't think you can get an easier receiver to set up. remote is simple to use. Setup menu is easy to navigate along with the option menu. My beef is on a USB drive you can't make it play the whole drive one song after another. It looks at each song as a folder, and won't move onto another folder without being told to do so. The scene buttons are nice, one push turns on receiver and sets up your sound fields and options for that input.
Pros: So easy to use and set up. Does most other things with ease.
Cons: The way it plays thumb drives.
Easy set up and great sound. Using this for a bedroom tv with a Def Tech sounder and sub. Wall shaking sound and can finally watch movies in the bedroom with outstanding sound.
Pros: Easy set up. Powerful and crystal clear sound. Great audio processing and 4k HDR video compatible. Lots of features for an inexpensive receiver.
I have used a lot of high end Yamaha equipment through my whole life and have always had good luck with their quality and value. For this application, all that I needed was a simple to use A/V receiver for a seasonal vacation home. The wife and daughter can easily use the remote to navigate through radio stations, blu-ray, vcr, etc. 5.1 surround is plenty for the intended use and I have everything running through several older Polk's front, center, surround, and sub. Very happy so far.
Pros: Easy to use. Nice remote. Great sound for it's intended use. Bluetooth and USB inputs are bonuses for this price level and both work very well.
Received the product as scheduled. I have always used Yamaha equipment and this one hasn't disappointed. Hooked up the my Yamaha speakers and sub with plenty of power and features. I like the USB that I can plug between this unit and my Jeep. Easy to read display and the manual is user friendly to read. Customer service is readily available if needed. Yamaha person for life for my stereo equipment.
Pros: plenty of power ease of use readable display
Cons: None so far.
Really glad to find a place where you can still find these types of amps. I have really enjoyed having surround sound again.
Pros: Great sound
Cons: No phono input
Easy to hook up and nice style
This is my first Yamaha receiver. I am a Yamaha convert. The quality,?sound, options, and quality is second to none. In fact I plan on buying another Yamaha for my home stereo system. You cannot go wrong or be disappointed in this receiver. Thanks for all your help and advice Crutchfield staff!!!
Pros: Awesome sound, easy to hook up and great sound options.
I looked at several receivers in this price range and this one had the best overall combination of features and quality. It was very easy to set up and I used the provided mic to balance the speakers. The sound and picture are excellent.
Product is great, but I'm not happy because I cannot connect my qrahpic equalizer/analyzer to the receiver. That sucks
Absolutely love the product and great service thank you
Pros: Love everything about the receiver
Search several years for that perfect combination of Old-School features and the new ones that I'll probably need at some point. This unit does that and more. Perfect fit for my media room upgrade. You can't bead Yamaha quality and price point, trust me I covered all the bases in this price range. This is the best. And with Crutchfield's excellent service, shipping and sales you can't go wrong. Forget about the big box stores. Stick with the experts-Crutchfield.
Pros: Everything you need
Great value for a quality receiver that does it all. Yamaha will always be my AV Receiver of choice!
Pros: Picture, sound, HDMI 2.2, 4K and HDR capabilities.
Cons: No printed user manual.
Exactly what I expected with what should be called an "entry level" home theater receiver. The quality if fantastic, it was very easy to set up and we're enjoying the sound quality very much! Functionality can be as simple as you want (plug in the supplied mic and let it calibrate itself!) or there are plenty of options for tweaking it to your personal taste. Out of the box to "in use" took less than an hour and absolutely no swear words or frustration. Playing tunes from my iPhone via the Bluetooth is a great feature that works as advertised with none of that lost connection / repairing garbage you see on a lot of other units. Pair it once, come back a week later and it still knows what to do. I love it. For those of us that hate going to theaters and want the best at home experience we can have, this unit ticks all the boxes. There is a manual supplied on CD and this is probably the only place I'd give a poor mark. It sure would be nice to have that as a desk top reference rather than having to fire up my laptop to use the manual. I would recommend this without hesitation.
Pros: Simplicity of set-up but plenty of functionality for at home use.
Cons: Manual on CD is irritating, but not a show stopper.
Good Product For Price I had some difficulty programming other brand of equipment to it
love everything about this receiver, looks good , great sound, great price and very easy to operate. also love the Yamaha name, has been around for a very long time.
Easy to install. Install CD is very good and easy to follow. Speaker set up is a big plus (one step)
Pros: Easy to install. Install CD is very good and easy to follow. Speaker set up is a big plus (one step)
Cons: It would be great if the remote were Universal enough to control EVERYTHING in your system (Cable Box, TV, Computer, etc.)
Had older receiver, this new unit makes my same Boston Acoustic speakers sound amazing, like studio monitors. No other changes but this receiver. Great price for a great unit.
Pros: Price and value.
It would be hard to imagine anyone not being pleased with this Yamaha. It's a snap to setup and the speakers are really easy to set to optimal sound. Don't let the relative "modest" power output worry you. I push a front end of old, not so efficient speakers with no problem. Sound separation for movies is exceptional. If thinking to purchase a soundbar.....units such as this (with several decent speakers) will make for a much more satisfying experience. Value for money spent has got to be in the 95% region. Yamaha has a long history (I've owned 2 of their top line models) for being reliable and stable. An awful lot to like for not an awful lot of dollars.
Pros: Excellent sound Easy setup Enough power for average user

5-Channel Discrete Amplification: The Yamaha RX-V383 AV Receiver is equipped with a duscrete 5-channel amplifier rated at 70 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.09% THD, driving 2 channels) which provides high dynamic power with low-impedance drive capability for a high level of sound quality and clarity.
Burr Brown DACs + Low-Jitter PLL Circuitry: The Yamaha RX-V383 uses high quality, audio-grade Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters for all channels to maximize sound quality. The Yamaha AV receiver also utilizes low-jitter PLL circuitry to help optimize sound imaging. The result is a more dynamic sound with greater detail and less distortion.
YPAO Sound Optimization: This unit employs the YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimizer), which automatically adjusts the output of the speakers based on placement, performance, and the room's acoustic characteristics. Yamaha's YPAO system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters; such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the volume level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. Using the supplied Optimizer Microphone, YPAO performs the following checks and makes appropriate adjustments to give you the best possible sound from your system:
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker, crossover, & EQ settings.
Compatible Digital Audio Formats: The AV receiver supports the following stereo & multichannel digital audio formats through its HDMI jacks and optical/coax digital inputs.
|Digital Audio Connector||Audio Signal Type||Audio Signal Format|
|HDMI||2Ch Linear PCM||2ch, 32-192kHz, 16/20/24-bit|
|Multichannel Linear PCM||8ch, 32-192kHz, 16/20/24-bit|
|DSD||2-6ch, 2.8824MHz, 1-bit|
|Bitstream||Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS ES, DTS 96/24|
|High Definition Audio Bitstream||Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, DTS Express|
|Optical/Coaxial||2Ch Linear PCM||2ch, 32-96kHz, 16/20/24-bit|
|Multichannel Linear PCM||6ch, 32-96Hz, 16/20/24-bit|
|Bitstream||Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS ES, DTS 96/24|
Note: Even though the AV receiver will decode 7.1ch surround sound (via HDMI), it will only output 5.1ch surround, because it lacks Surround Back channel speaker outputs.
Post Decoding Formats: The Yamaha AV receiver supports Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II (Movie/Music/Game), and DTS Neo: 6 (Music/Cinema) to enhance 2-channel and multichannel decoding formats. The receiver offers the additional Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS NEO:6 audio adjustments.
Cinema DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha Cinema DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialog, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers a wide variety of Cinema DSP programs for movies, music, and games.
Note: You can change the receiver's Cinema DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB.
Cinema DSP Modes: The Yamaha RX-V383 AV receiver offers proprietary Yamaha Cinema modes so you can enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using 5.1 speaker setup, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.
Straight Decode: Straight Decode lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When the Straight Decode mode is enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channle sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the receiver produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.
Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats - including MP3, WMA, AAC, and Bluetooth (SBC). With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.
Dialogue Level: Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialog and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.
Dynamic Range Control: The Yamaha RX-V383 employs two Dynamic Range Control functions.
Bass Management: The Yamaha RX-V383 AV receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.
Volume Setup: The Yamaha RX-V383 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.
Audio Outputs: The Yamaha RX-V383 AV receiver is fitted with binding post and spring terminals for the speaker outputs, along with a mon-Sub/LFE output and a front-panel headphone jack.
Front-Panel Aux Input: The RX-V383 features a front-panel Aux input (3.5mm) for connecting your portable audio player with a headphone output.
AM/FM Tuner: The Yamaha RX-V383 AV receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. The RX-V383 lets you store up to 40 AM/FM station presets. This can be done manually or automatically (auto-preset tuning). You can set this receiver to automatically match FM broadcast frequencies in stereo, or convert the frequency to monaural for weaker stations.
HDMI 2.0a: The Yamaha RX-V383 AV receiver is fitted with four HDMI 2.0a inputs and one HDMI 2.0a output that support the latest HDMI standards; such as 4K/60Hz, HDCP 2.2, 4:4:4 color subsampling, HDR (High Dynamic Range), and Wide Color Gamut (BT.2020) for full support of today's 4K content from Ultra HD Blu-ray, online video services (like Amazon & Netflix), and future TV broadcast services.
Note: Use a premium high-speed 18Gbps HDMI cable for the best 4K/HDR performance.
HDR (High Dynamic Range): The Yamah RX-V383 support HDR (high dynamic range) Video - including HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and Hybrid Log-Gamma. HDR (High Dynamic Range Video) provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth.
Note: Dolby Vision and Hybrid Log-Gamma will be available via future firmware update (no eta).
HDMI Video Upscaling (up to 4K): The Yamaha AV receiver's video processor provides upscaling of 1080p HDMI video sources to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels). The receiver does not offer analog-to-HDMI upconversion.
Other HDMI Features: The Yamaha RX-V383 AV receiver's HDMI connectivity also offers 3D video pass-through, ARC (Audio Return Channel), Deep Color & x.v.Color support, as well as an auto LipSync function.
Composite Video: The receiver features three composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output. These composite video jacks only support 480i video. The composite video inputs must be output via the composite video monitor output (there is no HDMI upconversion)
Background Audio/Video: The Background Audio/Video feature allows you to watch a video source while listening to a different audio source. With the RX-V383, you can select any video input (HDMI or analog) and listen to audio via the receiver's AM/FM tuner, Aux input, or Bluetooth
Front-Panel USB Port: This AV receiver is equipped with a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy MP3, WMA, AAC, & WAV (up to 48kHz) music files stored on a USB mass storage class memory device, such as a USB thumbdrive or portable digital audio player (not compatible with USB HDDs). Your USB mass storage class device must be formatted in FAT 16 or FAT32.You can use the receiver's on-screen menu (via HDMI) and remote control to navigate your stored music files on your connected USB memory device. USB portable audio devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the AV receiver's USB port (5V/1A); even in standby mode.
Note: The receiver's USB port does not support Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad or Android smartphones/tablets.
Built-in Bluetooth: The Yamaha RX-V383 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR) for wireless communication between Bluetooth-enabled audio source devices, headphones, and speakers. The AV receiver can act as a Bluetooth receiver in order to wirelessly stream music from an audio device, or a Bluetooth transmitter in order to wirelessly stream music to a set of BT-enabled headphones/speakers.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Yamaha AV receiver.
IR Remote + HDMI-CEC: The receiver comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of this receiver and other HDMI-connected sources (via HDMI CEC). This newly designed remote control features large buttons for enhanced ease of use. The Yamaha AV receiver supports HDMI-CEC, which synchronizes the operation of this unit with other HDMI-CEC devices when connected via HDMI.
Note: Not all HDMI-CEC compatible components and functions are guaranteed to work.
On-Screen Menu: The RX-V383 offers an on-screen menu system via its HDMI output. This clean and simple interface makes setup and other operations extremely easy. If your TV is connected to the composite video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings. You can set the receiver's on-screen menu language to English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, or Chinese. The front-panel display only offers English.
Scene (for One-Touch Start): The RX-V383 features four Scene buttons on the front-panel and remote to make operating the receiver easier. Pressing a Scene button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button; such as powering on the receiver, switching to the appropriate source input, and recalling the selected DSP surround mode.
Input Rename & Skip: The receiver automatically creates an input source name that is displayed on the front-panel screen for connected HDMI-compatible sources. You can also manually rename each input so the display reflects the actual source. If an input isn't being used, you can hide it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources.
Display Dimmer: You can set the brightness of the front-panel display from -4 to 0.
ECO Mode: When the ECO Mode is enabled, you can reduce the receiver' power consumption by keeping the maximum volume, maximum output power, and front display's brightness low. ECO mode reduces power consumption by approximately 20%.
Timers: The receiver offers a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Power Down function.
Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.

Sorry! My bad. I was thinking of my other receiver. This is a great, inexpensive receiver, but it does not have any dedicated phono inputs. However, if your turntable has a built-in preamp you could connect it to the receiver's analog inputs. Or, you could buy a preamp. But, at that point if would probably be cheaper to buy a model higher on the Yamaha lineup as that would have a dedicated phono input. [ Louis Jan 10, 2018 ]
Sure. There are analog inputs (red-white RCA type plugs) on the receiver that could be used to connect to a traditional analog output on a turntable. [ Louis Jan 10, 2018 ]
Sorry don't use one.... [ James Jan 09, 2018 ]
Yes it has several Aux inputs [ David Jan 09, 2018 ]
It does not have a designated phono input. Therefore, to use a turntable one must have a turntable with a built-in preamp (many newer turntables have these). Or, you could use an older turntable without a preamp, and purchase a separate turntable preamp. [ Michael Jan 09, 2018 ]
No, you would need to go up to the RX-v683 to get the phono input. [ Karl Jan 09, 2018 ]
Kris Yes. Feet are removable .yet my Yamaha RX-V383 without feet is 5" 1/8 tall. Hope this help and top marks on the receiver on my end. Mark [ Mark A. Dec 31, 2017 ]
I think you could remove them but it would restrict the air flow for cooling the unit [ James Dec 31, 2017 ]
Sorry, I am not familiar with your Vizio product. I only have my receiver hooked up to my Speakers and CD player. [ Karl Dec 05, 2017 ]
IR I think. You can nicely control it through the HDMI-CEC though. It shuts down and volume is ocntrolled thorugh DirectTV remote and Fire HD sstick when poluged into the receiver.... [ CORWIN M F Nov 18, 2017 ]
Using either the AV 1 or AV 2 white/red RCA connections should work fine since the turntable has a preamp. Of course you won't have anything plugged into the yellow video connector for AV 1 or AV 2 in this case. [ Fred Aug 31, 2017 ]
If the turntable has a built-in preamp, either of the two line-level inputs would be fine (AV1 or AV2). Also, be sure that the turntable preamp is on, as some of these can be switched off or on, so that the turntable can also be used with a receiver that has a dedicated turntable input, or with an external phono preamp. [ Michael Aug 31, 2017 ]
The Analog audio ports red and white. Our turntable came with a short cable and barely makes it. [ Tony Aug 30, 2017 ]
There is no best answer for this. Typically 18 or 16 gauge is fine for most installs, and is readily available. Using really "fat" 10 or 12 gauge wire adds no sonic benefit, and, in fact, may be a pain to insert in the speaker connectors of some receivers. I usually use generic 16 gauge speaker wire for most installs, and spend the savings over "designer" cables on good banana plugs, which are truly a timesaver and convenience. [ Michael Aug 31, 2017 ]
believe 18 [ Jim Aug 01, 2017 ]
Frankly for short runs it doesn't really matter. I use 14 gauge. [ DAVID Jul 31, 2017 ]
