Overview

Our take on the Yamaha YAS-107

I consider Yamaha's so-called "entry level" sound bars one of the best values in home theater sound. Their latest value-packed bar — the YAS 107— even features DTS Virtual:X. This special technology simulates three-dimensional sound.

Yamaha YAS-107 under a TV

The slim Yamaha YAS-107 sound bar fits under most TVs and delivers serious sound.

Serious bang for your buck

I consider Yamaha's so-called "entry level" sound bars one of the best values in home theater sound. Their latest value-packed bar — the YAS 107— even features DTS Virtual:X. This special technology simulates three-dimensional sound.

This single, compact unit fits right under your screen on your TV stand or mounts on your wall. Don't let the modest price and super-slim design fool you. Yamaha's powerful drivers and special surround processing give you a large, riveting sound experience. Everything sounds bigger and clearer — effects, dialogue, and music, too.

How does DTS Virtual:X work?

Many sound bars simulate Dolby Atmos or DTS:X by bouncing sound off your walls and ceiling. That's not what's happening here. The drivers inside the YAS-107 sound bar are slightly angled, but they're placed more or less where you'd expect to find them in two-channel bar. There are no upward-firing drivers. Instead, DTS Virtual:X almost completely relies on digital sound processing.

DTS uses what they call "spatial audio techniques" to — my word here — "trick" you into thinking you're hearing sound all around you. Incredibly sophisticated audio delays and adjustments create a larger, wider soundstage. That includes overhead atmospheric effects like leaves rustling on a tall tree or birds chirping above.

Read my article "What is DTS Virtual:X?" for more details

Binge-watch with better sound

The YAS-107 includes Dolby® and DTS® decoding as well as Yamaha's digital surround processing. Built-in amplifiers power six drivers for rich, full-range sound, with plenty of high-frequency detail. From soft footfalls to jarring collisions, the slim bar adds visceral realism to your favorite movies and shows all by itself.

Bu if you crave even more bass impact, there's a dedicated output for adding an optional powered subwoofer.

Bluetooth lets you play tunes wirelessly

Yamaha didn't forget the music — after all, it's how the company made their name. The YAS-107 has built-in Bluetooth so you can play music wirelessly from your phone or tablet. Special processing cleans up compressed audio files, so all your tunes will sound full and detailed.

Easy hookup and operation

Both HDMI connections are 4K compatible, with full HDCP 2.2 capability — so it will work with 4K TVs with high dynamic range (HDR). You can also use the included optical digital cable to connect the sound bar to your TV. Use your existing TV remote to control power and volume commands, use the included remote, or download the free Yamaha Home Theater Controller app. This turns your Apple® or Android™ device into a Bluetooth remote.

Great Value for a Reasonable Price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A bargain for the money! Great sound improvement for my flat screen TV. Love the surround sound and sub woofer capability, but the expanded bass extension feature works well. As I have grown older it has become increasingly difficult to hear dialogue, particularly women's and accented voices. The clear voice feature is a godsend. The Bluetooth feature allows me to take advantage of the great sound for my iPad, iPod and iPhone devices as well. The size works well with my TV setup and the remote is easy to operate. In short, I love the YAS-107 and the enhancements it has provided!

I'm rating 5 stars, when the price is considered. I had been listening with the inferior speakers that are inside my TV. It was tempting to spend lots more money on the top end stuff but I don't regret spending what I did on this one. There are a few sound settings on this one so you can dial it in to your taste. I use the same setting for regular TV watching and for music listening. It's simple and it works. Yamaha makes good stuff. I would buy again.

A low cost versatile and great sound system

Ray from Minnetonka, MN on 3/24/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided to buy this model with DTS Virtual:X instead of the less expensive model at Costco because of recommendations from other reviews that I read. The sound is much more rich than the flat sound out of the TV speakers. The 3D sound effect is not as effective as a multi-speaker home theater setup, but I am not disappointed. The bass is very good even without an external woofer. In fact I have to turn down the bass so my neighbors below my apartment don't get shaken. Setup was easy. I used the fiber optic cable that was included. The fiber optic cable is thin and less obtrusive than a setup with a thick HDMI cable. I also used the analog outlet to connect to my smart mobile phone's built in analog radio - did you know that some smart phone have an ANALOG FM radio that works like a classical radio? The FM sound out of the Yamaha sound bar is fantastic. If instead you want to play music off the internet or an MP3 song from your smart phone, you can also connect your smart phone to the soundbar via bluetooth. It is easy and fast to setup and anyone who says it does not work well is just wrong. There is another cool feature of the bluetooth setup that you can activate - when you turn on bluetooth on your smart phone the soundbar power automatically turns on, and when you turn off bluetooth on your smart phone the soundbar power automatically turns off. If you want great sound for your TV, radio or smart phone at a great price, get the YAS-107.

Pros: Super sound with excellent bass, easy to setup, small footprint, and many cool features.

Cons: Home theater systems with speakers distributed around the room provide better spatial sound.

I didn't have a lot of money to spend but the sound from my flat screen TV that is wall mounted was poor, the new soundbar recommended to me fit the bill perfectly. Now I enjoy the TV much better due to the enhanced sound.

Pros: Great sound for the price

Purchased this for my daughter for her TV as she only had the internal TV speakers. What a difference! She loves it. The sound quality is on par with Yahama's reputation and the bluetooth connectivity is an added bonus. Thinking of replacing our sound bar with one of these. The price is very affordable and fit within the budget perfectly.

Pros: Sound quality, functionality, optional wall or table mounting.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great bang for the buck with Crutchfield 's legendary service was more than I could pass up. Going from stock television speakers to the Yamaha YAS107 was nothing short of shocking. Super crisp dialogue and surprisingly deep bass... I was very satisfied with this purchase. On a final note - I have the bar mounted facing Up just in front of the television and the faux-surround sound works like a charm ! Amazing ! Crutchfield+Yamaha=WIN .

Pros: Clear dialogue , surprising bass , "surround sound" that works as advertised.

Cons: None

Anonymous from Saint Paul, MN on 3/13/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good budget sound bar with decent sound, especially for a "shorter" bar (35"). Mine shipped with the DTS-X upgrade already installed (Surround indicator light turns blue). Downloading the Yamaha HT Controller app is a must, as there are additional "Modes" you can set the sound bar to that you can't set on the remote. The modes are 3D Surround, TV Program, Stereo, Movie, Music, Sports and Game. My sound bar was shipped in default mode (Movie) and it sounded horrid with some TV programming. So download the app and play around with the different modes until you find one you like. I found you may need different modes for different shows and movies to sound their best.

Pros: Good sound for a smaller bar; especially at this price point. Plays Loud and Clear Clear Voice Feature

Cons: Additional "Sound Modes" not available on remote. Must download App.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome sound, well worth the cost! I bought this to replace a Bose Cinemate-15; we were re-vamping our living room and couldnt find a spot for the Bose subwoofer (Acoustimass). I was not disappointed ! While this doesn't have the deep, deep bass of the Acoustimass, it does have a solid deep sound, more than adequate for our 12x 25 living room. I paired it with a new LG 4K TV, and its sounds really good both for everyday TV use, and movies / concerts. Its a great adde bonus that its also a Bluetooth speaker for my phone. One of the best electronic buys I have made, thanks to the advisors at Crutchfield!

Pros: great sound, solid bass, easy setup and use, bluetooth speaker

Cons: no on screen display for volume

Great value and even better sound at this price point

VIN from Houston, TX on 2/16/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excited to open up the Yamaha YAS-107. The soundbar looks wonderful and well built. Setup was a breeze and surround sound processing was great. For the price point I feel this is a great value for what you are getting from an reputable brand in the home audio industry. I would say the only reason I did not give this product a 5-star rating is the requirement not readily noted to sync the YAS-107 controls with your TV remote and that is, you must use HDMI connections for this feature to work i.e. you cannot use just the optical cable. Plus in my case I did not want to go this route because I had multiple devices connected to my TV. So to get around the HDMI requirement, you can use your universal remote and program the soundbar as a receiver. Worked out great for me.

Pros: Sound, Build, Brand

Cons: Remote Sync Not Flexible

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this very spur of the moment at first because of the price but after reading a few reveiws it seemed like a safe bet . It sounds much better than the tv speakers of course , I have not had it long ( about 2 weeks ) so I still have to put it thru its trials as far as movies go ...also have not played music thru it . So for now with only tv programs its done a good job .

Pros: price , ease of updates , doesn't take up much room and decent sound from your tv .

Cons: None so far .

No.

BRUCE from San Francisco, CA on 2/15/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My intended use was for both TV and tunes from my laptop, saving space. Switching between the modes: bluetooth - hdmi - tv is frustrating and seems like I can get the bluetooth to kick in by pure luck. I will keep this connected to the tv and now buy a separate bluetooth speakers for itunes...which defeats the whole purpose of why I purchased this in the first place. Mine is not mounted because I live in an apartment, so I'm not taking advantage of the best sound. If placed tilted up to take advantage of the sound, the tv doesnt have room to rotate. Overall do not recommend unless only using for one item.

Pros: Improved the sound of my tv.

Cons: Toggling between bluetooth and tv settings is sooooooo frustrating 50% of the time i give up. I have to have lie flat so the tv can swivel, sound coul be better.

Great Sounbar

Paul from Mooresville, NC on 2/14/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a really nice soundbar. I'm using it in my bedroom with my Sony XBR-43X830C flat screen (both are wall mounted) and a Velodyne 8" sub. The sound quality compared to the TV's audio system is night and day. I was using a Sony SWF-BR100B wireless sub, which was okay as far as adding a little depth to the sound, but the lows were never punchy or full, plus it isn't tunable at the sub level only on the TV's EQ. Anyway back to the soundbar, it's easy to mount and setup. I'm using the HDMI/ARC output on the soundbar to control the volume with the TV's remote. I have Cable and DirecTV going to the TV via HDMI and I'm running a Blue-Ray player via the HDMI input on the soundbar. All inputs sound really good, but the Blue-Ray direct to the soundbar sounds the best. The Bluetooth was easy to setup and the music sounds great too. The bar comes with a mounting template which makes it so much easier to get the bar level and also comes with a pretty good set of instructions for setup and adjustments. Would definitely recommend this to a friend.

Pros: Excellent sound quality. Easy install and setup. HDMI/ARC output. Sub-woofer Output. Price. Good value for the money.

Cons: None so far.

You won't be sorry...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was really impressed with the sound from my new Yamaha soundbar. I don't like to spend a lot of money on every gadget I come across, but this was an excellent purchase. I did pair it with a subwoofer that I had, but it really holds it's own for full sound, even without when I don't have the sub powered up. I highly recommend this unit, especially for such a reasonable price for such a huge sound improvement!

Pros: Ash set up Great sound reinforcement for your flat panel t.v.

Cons: You may need to use the included remote, but not a huge issue.

Excellent sound for the price. Voice is very clear to hear at 15 to 20 feet away from TV. It is great to have the option to add a sub-woofer. I will be doing that soon. Had 1 operating glitch but the cause was in the ARC transmission from the TV. If you have a large Room and high ceilings, you might want to go to something larger There are better soundbars out there but at a substantially higher cost.

Pros: great sound for price. Clear Voice button works well.

This seems to be a great little sound bar. We hung it on a wall above our television and it works and looks great there. We can easily see the on/volume lights. This replaces another audio system with a wireless subwoofer that had a mind of its own. We like that the subwoofers are contained in the sound bar and the sound seems very good. We also like the remote because we can use it from across the room.

extremley well thought through great sound especially when using the clear voice option, I love the fact that it has a sub woofer out that works great to really give the full effect. Also with the (arc) feature it pairs well with my Samsung MU8000 it goes on and off with tv remote so i don't need two separate remotes.

Pros: works well, sound is quality ,looks good, light enough to hang under tv.

Cons: advertised as having 6 speakers in all but only hear two, although may be the way I have it hooked up with it;s DTS Virtual:X

This is a very good sound bar at this price point. It's pretty good sitting on a table, but when you wall mount it, it is awesome especially considering I have the unit without the sub woofer. The really expensive units are somewhat better, but for TV and movie watching this is more than adequate.

Pros: great sound clear voice option surround sound several builtin decoders

Cons: really need to mount on a wall or some vertical surface to get the full impact

William from North Wilkesboro, NC on 12/22/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great soundbar! Setup through the HDMI/ARC to the TV was simple. Sounds great; no visual/audio mismatch. I have my Blu-Ray player going through the soundbar's HDMI pass thru; the soundbar automatically figures out which audio source to use (TV or Blu-Ray). The builtin sub-woofer sounds OK, but the unit's sub-woofer output jack gives you flexibility to add an external powered sub-woofer. For the price, it's hard to beat.

John H from Sultan, WA on 12/21/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The YAS-107 sounds good enough for it's intended purpose (for my hard of hearing dad) but doesn't get very loud although it is loud enough (barely) I also bought for it's HDMI (ARC) connection so my dad wouldn't have to fumble around with an extra remote...well the instructions are confusing and very minimal. I've tried 2 separate times to hook up using HDMI(ARC) and it just won't output sound. It's probably something I'm doing wrong but neither myself or my dad can figure it out. We both have been around the block so to speak when it comes to audio equipment but this has us stumped. It shouldn't be this complicated especially something as "simple" as this. I followed the VERY poor inadequate directions, used proper HDMI cable, as I said shouldn't be complex and maybe it isn't but I had to resort to using the optical connection so now my dad has to use 2 remotes (what I was trying to avoid in the first place). One other thing to mention are the connections especially the power connection it's recessed so deep into the sound bar making connection(s) very difficult. If I had known the difficult time I would have with this soundbar I would have looked elsewhere.

Pros: Slim enough to sit in front of most stand mounted tv's Seems well built

Cons: VERY Poor instructions Hard to reach connections Not very loud Light pannel hard to see when on tabletop VehicleID and Description:

Frank from Bolivia, NC on 12/10/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The wife and I are retired and were looking for something to replace our 15 year old surround sound system. We wanted to get something that produced decent sound quality without the clutter (my wife's word, not mine) that the surround sound multi component systems posed. I saw the YAS-107 on sale at Crutchfield and thought I'd give it a try. We've had it for about three weeks and overall we are very pleased with the product. Very easy to install, and the sound quality is very good. Fills our 19' x 21' great room with good quality sound throughout the spectrum. I was surprise how how good the lows sounded with the built-in subwoofers. I also like the ability to connect directly to the sound bar via bluetooth. The only minor con I have about the YAS-107 is that all the led indicator are on the top of the sound bar. I have the bar sitting on the fireplace mantle shelf, under the wall mounted TV, so you can't see them. It would be beneficial to have at least a power on/off led on the front of the bar. Overall we are very satisfied with the Yamaha YAS-107 sound bar. It produces very good sound quality at a reasonable price. Also appreciated the fast and free shipping. Thanks Crutchfield.

Pros: Very good sound quality for its price point. Surprisingly good bass sound from the built-in subwoofers. Very easy to set up.

Bought this for a house warming gift for my daughter and had it shipped directly to her apartment. The delivery and timing were perfect, no hiccups. The sound bar set up was a easy and it sounds great. She will use it as her primary speaker for movies, TV and music. She is thrilled with it and so am I.

Pros: Great sound and price.

Disappointment

J Alex from Houston, TX on 12/7/2017

I was excited to use this soundbar to improve the quality of my bedroom television, but was fully disappointed. The sound was not clear, crisp, nor did the lows hit with the requisite feel. To sum it up, this soundbar is better than the TV speakers, but not by much. This is an example of the saying, "You get what you pay for." At this price, I wholly suggest that you spend the extra money and purchase a product with a separate subwoofer.

Pros: Better than stock TV speakers

Cons: Not that much better than stock TV speakers; spend a little more for much better performance.

I am 73 years old Retired IBM and never have been a TV or movie fanatic. I bought TCL 55" ROKU 4K for the Grand Kids when they come over. Have all movies Digital copies thru VUDU and now Movies Anywhere. My sister buys the DVD's and we redeem digital copy for everyone to use. That said, I have always just used TV speakers and have been satisfied. That is until I bought YAS-107. It is like having a totally new TV. The experience is totally unreal. I have watched 3 movies in 2 days demonstrating this Sound Bar. I never would have watched Despicable Me 2 but for this sound bar. It is mesmerizing. Don't know how I lived with out it. I use Bluetooth to listen to 2,600 songs I have accumulated digitally over the years. I loaded them into my iPhone and music plays all day on this Sound Bar.

Pros: Stylish, fits into my Ethan Allen Antique Pine Movie Theater Setup perfect.

Cons: NONE for me.

I purchased this product January 21st of this year, and the product failed within 4 months. I did not keep the box nor the receipt so I bit the bullet and lost out. Very disappointed in the sound bar failing within a few months of purchase. It did have good sound and met my needs for a short while.

Pros: Width was acceptable to place behind television stand on my desk. Good sound.

Cons: Failed within six months of purchase.

Crutchfield response on 11/14/2017 After receiving James' feedback, we looked up his order and found that his sound bar is still under warranty. While his order is beyond Crutchfield's 60-day return policy, he can contact our Customer Support team at 1-800-955-9091 to get a copy of his invoice. He can then contact Yamaha at 714-522-9105 for further information about the 2-year warranty on this sound bar.

Adam from Rochester, NY on 10/29/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Yamaha YAS-107 soundbar is possibly the single best value in the audio world at this time. I've had mine for a few months, and it sounds terrific with a variety of genres from a variety of sources. You can binge watch series on Prime over the optical input, fire up a DVD in the Blu-Ray player connected via HDMI, go totally random on Spotify over Bluetooth, or spin your vintage CDs in the Blu-Ray on the HDMI input and have excellent, balanced sound over each one of these connections. Turn on, switching among the connections, and operating the device is smooth and trouble-free. The convenience features are also terrific, like the auto shutdown after a period of inactivity and the setting to shut the soundbar down when a Bluetooth device disconnects. The remote is compact and well-designed, I only wish it had some subtle backlighting so it was easier to use when viewing movies in a darkened room. No, this isn't the last world in clarity (the sound leans a little warmish) or stereo imaging, but you would have to spend more money and deal with more boxes and wires to improve on the YAS-107. Obviously the bass extension is limited, but the YAS-107 has the flexibility to integrate with a subwoofer. I recommend Yamaha's own NS-SW200 sub, which is a compact, well-designed unit. Add this to the YAS-107 and you will have a fantastic, compact little full-range system for small to medium-sized rooms.

Pros: Excellent overall sound with movies and music. Even, balanced sound all the time. All the options one needs with regard to connectivity. Easy to use. Nice convenience features and simple remote. Frustration free operation, this thing just works. Easy to integrate with a subwoofer.

Cons: Not the last word in clarity or stereo imaging.

Adrian from San Antonio, TX on 9/21/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm 19 living with my parents so I wasn't looking for anything huge and loud. I haven't actually tested how loud it can get but it seems like it can get pretty loud. It's been awesome with lower to medium(20 to 40 percent) level listening. Especially with the subwoofers turned up and bass extension on. The rumbles that come out of this thing during gaming and movies impressed me the most. I leave it on stereo sound, surround feature sounds funny to me. Clear voice worked good, brought out the voices and reduced everything else ,but its not for me. Bluetooth streaming from devices sounded pretty bad but I don't ever plan on using that, just something to know. Over all great upgrade from tv speakers for the 180 I paid

Pros: Sound, Bass, Set up, Ease of use, Features, Price

Cons: Bluetooth streaming

While the sound is better than the audio from my TV it isn't what I thought it could be. There should be an upgrade coming for the Yas-107 and should have received a notification from Yamaha by now, it should enhance the surround sound experience. Hopefully that happens soon.

Roger from Polk City, FL on 8/31/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I never compared this to any other Sound bars, so all I can say's is it's a big improvement to My flat screen sound. It produces a lot of volume and the built in subwoofers fits My needs perfectly. At first I just used the optical cable but I was having sound issues with My DVD player, so I hooked HDMI to the player along with the optical cable to the TV, then I had to keep turning off the TV speakers repeatedly. Then out of the blue, the problem fixed it's self ? The Bluetooth remote app. is kind of a waste, works like your remote, no extra features. All in all though, I'm very satisfied.

Pros: Plenty of Volume and Bass.

Cons: Set up was not hard, just a little funky.

Design Flaw

John from Reidsville, NC on 8/29/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

*****Design Flaw****** Awesome sound for a cheap bar but has a major flaw. If you set the bar on a table or other surface instead of mounting in on the wall the display will point up to the ceiling. That means that when you make adjustments using the remote you can see the display. The way the cords plug in make it difficult to just set it up with the display going to the user.

This is an EXCELLENT sound bar for the value. In terms of performance, out of this world! My only gripe is that it really is meant to be mounted, and if you're going to lay it flat, it's hard to use the remote. If you don't mind that, 5 stars.

Pros: Excellent in all ways in terms of performance

Cons: Aesthetically, it's meant to be mounted, and the remote isn't meant for it to be laid flat.

I give it 5 stars because it was super easy to install and set up, took me less than half hour. It synced with my DirecTV remote so I only need one remote to control the volume. It turns off and on when I power off the TV. It's great! And sounds good with enough bass for what I needed it for. I have a TV out on my patio and now I have a soundbar to boost the volume. Tried it with the Game of Thrones into song and it sounded amazing for a single soundbar with no extra sub. Get this soundbar for the price!

Mike from Key Largo, FL on 8/2/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Yamaha YAS-107 has very clear audio and fairly impressive base for such small sub drivers. We have it in our living room which is open to the kitchen and has a lot of air space (14ft ceilings). The sound bar does not loose quality or direction. The only issue is if you have it on any other surround setting besides stereo it clips very badly. I believe this is a software issue as the YAS-207 had a similar issue which was just recently fixed in an update. This is a great quality for price sound bar. I would not say this is for audiophiles, but for the average user it will do the job very well.

Pros: Clarity, ease of use

Cons: Surround sound issues

The system is quite good for the price and worth it! But know that you are buying a low-end sound bar. The sound is greatly improved but nowhere close to a more expensive soundbar. The functionality is limited but works quite well. If you are looking for a budget soundbar, this is definitely the one to purchase!

Pros: Overall better quality sound Clear voice option is fantastic

Cons: Deep bass to be desired (ext bass will deliver much higher quality)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not an audiophile like some who post reviews on this site. I'm simply a guy who appreciates good sound when I hear it, and can certainly appreciate the difference between the speakers in an eight year old LCD television and a sound bar. I own a $800 Yamaha sound bar that sound fantastic and it's 16 speakers and sub do a great job filling my 20'x20' family room with 11' ceilings. This $200 sound bar with no sub provides comparable sound in 8x10 room. It's not as "good" as the larger, more expensive Yamaha, but it doesn't need to be, and the bigger unit certainly isn't 8x as good as this one. Need a great sound bar at a reasonable that doesn't suck up floor space with a sub? This one will do the trick.

Features

2.1ch Active Soundbar Speaker: The Yamaha YAS-107 active soundbar speaker features a 2.1ch driver configuration with one 1" dome tweeter and one 2.125" mid-woofer for each of the left & right channels, as well as dual 3" subwoofers for the LFE channel. The YAS-107 delivers 120-watts of power to the enclosed drivers - 30 watts to each of the left & right channels and 60 watts to both subwoofers.

Built-In Subwoofers w/ Bass Extension: The YAS-107 is equipped with dual, built-in subwoofers plus a unique bass reflex port and "Bass Extension" processing to deliver exceptional low-end performance without the need for a separate powered subwoofer. You can adjust the level of the built-in subwoofers independently from the soundbar's overall volume.

Clear Voice: Clear Voice raises the level of dialog and narrations while maintaining overall sound quality. Movies and TV shows, sports commentary and news broadcasts are more clearly audible.

Compressed Music Enhancer: The Compressed Music Enhancer restores frequency response lost during digital compression, so your music sounds the way it should. Optimized for Bluetooth audio transmission, you'll enjoy vivid, lively sound quality during wireless playback. When a compressed source is played, the Compressed Music Enhancer engages automatically.

Dolby Digital & DTS Compatible: The Yamaha YAS-107 soundbar decodes 2ch PCM, multi-channel PCM, Dolby Digital, & DTS audio signals. You can listen to these audio formats in Virtual Surround mode or 2ch Stereo mode. The 2ch Stereo mode is ideal for music, while the Virtual Surround mode provides a much more immersive soundfield for movies. From Yamaha's Home Theater Control App on your Apple iOS or Android device you select between different surround modes - TV Program, Stereo, Movie, Music, Sports, & Game.

Digital Audio Connector Audio Signal Type Audio Signal Format
HDMI 2Ch Linear PCM 2ch, 32-96kHz, 16/20/24-bit

Optical 2Ch Linear PCM 2ch, 32-48Hz, 16/20/24-bit
Bitstream Dolby Digital, DTS

DTS Virtual:X Ready + 3D Surround Mode (via firmware update): DTS Virtual:X compatibility & a 3D Surround playback mode will be available through a firmware update (due August 2017). Once the firmware update is complete, surround sound can be heard not only from horizontal directions, but also from varying heights when DTS Virtual:X is used. DTS Virtual:X can be used with any content (from 2ch to 5.1ch soundtracks), while delivering virtual height & virtual surround processing based on psychoacoustics (not reflective surfaces).

Note: The firmware update can be accessed from Yamaha's website and downloaded onto a USB thumbdrive which will need to be inserted into YAS-107's USB port for update.

HDMI 2.0a: The Yamaha YAS-107 is outfitted with one HDMI 2.0a input and one HDMI ARC 2.0a output that support the latest HDMI 2.0a standards; such as 4K/60Hz, HDCP 2.2, 4:4:4 color subsampling, & HDR (High Dynamic Range) for full support of today's 4K content from Ultra HD Blu-ray & online video services (like Amazon & Netflix).

  • 4K/60Hz: The YAS-107 supports up to 4K (3840x2160 pixels) video @ 60 frames per second through its HDMI input and output. It also supports a 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p video signal.
  • HDCP 2.2: The HDMI input and output also support HDCP 2.2, which fully complies with the latest copyright protection standard for 4K video transmission.
  • HDR 10 (High Dynamic Range): The YAS-107 supports HDR 10. High Dynamic Range video provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth.
  • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: In addition, the HDMI input and output support RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2, and YCbCr 4:2:0 color subsampling (@ 60Hz or 50Hz). With 4:4:4 color subsampling, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail.
  • Deep Color & x.v.Color: The soundbar's HDMI jacks support Deep Color & x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
  • 3D Ready: The YAS-107 soundbar supports 3D video pass-through (720p/1080p only) from connected 3D-compatible Blu-ray, games and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs (all 3D components must be connected via HDMI). Special eyewear will be required for viewing 3D content.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature of the YAS-107's HDMI output allows audio to be sent from your compatible TV to the soundbar through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your TV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Note: Because with many televisions, the ARC-enabled HDMI input will only pass 2ch PCM from devices connected to the TV via HDMI or analog, we recommend that you connect your Blu-ray player or  Satellite/Cable box to the Yamaha soundbar directly; and then connect the YAS-107's ARC-enabled HDMI output to your TV's ARC-enabled HDMI input. This setup will give you with the best overall sound performance.

Analog & Digital Audio Inputs: The YAS-107 is outfitted with both analog & digital audio outputs to connect to your TV. There is one optical (toslink) digital input that supports 2Ch PCM, 5.1ch Dolby Digital, and 5.1ch DTS audio signals (up to 24-bit/32-48kHz). There is also one stereo minijack (3.5mm) audio input for televisions without an optical digital out.

Note: The digital optical output terminals of many flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).

Bluetooth Music Streaming: The Yamaha YAS-107 soundbar speaker system supports Bluetooth (v.4.1+EDR) A2DP wireless audio streaming (up to 33'). This allows you to stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled device; such as your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/table, Windows Phone/PC, or Mac computer/laptop to the YAS-107 soundbar speaker. You will continue to navigate your music and view song/artist information from your Bluetooth-enabled device.

  • Pairing: This unit pairs with your Bluetooth-enabled device with a single press of a button. If a Bluetooth device has been paired before, the unit will connect to the last paired device when the soundbar's Bluetooth source button is pressed. You will need to terminate this connection to pair a new device.
  • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the Yamaha soundbar speaker offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the YAS-107 soundbar offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
  • Bluetooth Standby: The Bluetooth Standby function allows you to turn On or Off the soundbar automatically, linked with the operation of a Bluetooth device.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Yamaha YAS-107.

Sub Out: A mono-RCA subwoofer output lets you hook up an optional powered sub (sold separately). The soundbar's built-in subs will continue to produce sound along with the external power sub.

Remote Control: The YAS-107 comes with a sleek, easy-to-use IR remote control for wireless operation of the soundbar speaker. Also, if your TV supports HDMI CEC and you use HDMI connectivity, it is possible to adjust the volume of the sound bar using your TV's remote to simplify day-to-day operation.

Note: This soundbar does not allow you to program your TV remote to operate the speaker, but does offer HDMI control through your compatible TV's remote.

Home Theater Controller App (for iOS & Android): The YAS-107 is compatible with Yamaha's Home Theater Control App (HT Controller) for Apple iOS 8.0+ & Android OS 4.0+ devices. This remote app makes it easy to control the soundbar from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device via a Bluetooth connection. Its intuitive and easy-to-see operating screen uses icons that let you easily perform a variety of operations; including Input, Volume, Audio settings, and Surround modes. Surround modes include TV Program, Stereo, Movie, Music, Sports, & Game.

Mounting Options: Due to its slim profile, the soundbar fits in front of most flat-panel TVs without blocking the screen. If you prefer to wall-mount the speaker, the YAS-107 offers built-in keyhole slots (spaced 18" apart).

  • Table-Top Mount Dimensions: 35.0" (w) x 2.125" (h) x 5.1875" (d)
  • Wall-Mount Dimensions: 35.0" (w) x 5.1875" (h) x 2.125" (d)

Auto Standby: The soundbar will automatically turn off when there is no operation for 8 hours, or not audio input and no operation for 20 minutes.

I consulted with a Crutchfield representative named Ryan who gave positive feedback on both the YAS-107 and YAS-207 sound bars. He said they are compatible with the tvs that I purchased and said they were both rated highly. [ Kevin  Apr 09, 2018 ]

The online reviews overall. That and it allows 4k passthrough. Oh and I didn't really want or need an external subwoofer...okay that's all I got! [ CJ  Mar 15, 2018 ]

Yamaha has a "sound" reputation and the YAS-107 has excellent reviews. The product appears to have the latest technology at an affordable price. [ Raymond  Mar 08, 2018 ]
I have other Yamaha electronics and have been very happy with them. I buy all my electronics from Crutchfield because I have spent hours in the past with your technical advisors during car stereo installations where I ran into problems. Without your help I would still be frustrated. Plus this looked like just what I wanted for the price. Good sound for the living room TV. Thanks -Doug [ Douglas  Mar 05, 2018 ]
Gift for my daughter who needed a good quality, reasonably priced sound bar. With her small apartment, not have the additional subwoofer was a plus, plus bluetooth compatibility. [ CHERYL  Mar 03, 2018 ]

Crutchfield employee Hogan recommended this for its ability to enhance the spoken word [ Diane  Dec 31, 2017 ]
Well recommended! [ jerry  Dec 31, 2017 ]
Wanted small sound bar for kitchen/dining. We currently have a small Polk Audio system, but we must be inches from the sound bar to use the tiny remote. Also the wireless subwoofer freaks out occasionally and we cannot use it. [ D  Dec 28, 2017 ]
I chose this soundbar for the following: 1 - HDMI 2.2 passthrough with 4K / ARC support 2 - Subwoofer output is on the bar, so I can find my own subwoofer to add more depth to the bass if I determine it is necessary after using the soundbar 3 - Source indicators on the actual bar, many don't have this [ Perry  Dec 23, 2017 ]
Relatively small room. No need for anything fancier [ Sydney  Dec 22, 2017 ]
Inexpensive with good reviews and option to send signal to separate subwoofer which I already have. And Tech Service at Crutchfield always excellent! [ Tom  Dec 19, 2017 ]
Kevin recommended it. [ Mario  Dec 17, 2017 ]
great reviews. looking for something easy with no clutter. recommended by Crutchfield tech via chat. [ gary  Dec 16, 2017 ]
Recommended by my advisor to improve sound quality of TV. I have noticed the sound distortion on my older TV so this is a great solution. [ Jacqueline  Dec 15, 2017 ]
Good reviews. A friend has the 106 and likes it. HDMI ARC allowing volume control though TV. Crutchfield support. Clear voice tech for hard of hearing people. [ Craig  Dec 15, 2017 ]
Good rating and price for a medium size sound bar. Also free and fast shipping. [ Linda  Dec 13, 2017 ]
Small profile to sit in front of or even under my bedroom television. Subwoofer output as well as HDMI with ARC are features I was looking for, as I have a higher quality sub than the wireless subs offered in similar packages. 4K pass was also a selling point. [ Rick  Dec 12, 2017 ]
Good reviews, price was right. [ Paul  Dec 12, 2017 ]
I read the reviews needed a basic level unit [ John  Dec 11, 2017 ]
Something new er. [ David  Dec 05, 2017 ]
Because of the prior Yamaha soundbar I purchased a couple years ago [ Andrew  Dec 01, 2017 ]
It was on my son's Christmas list. Hopefully the integrated sub woofer will give it enough thump. [ MIKE  Nov 28, 2017 ]
Great reviews and cost for a simple system. I didn't want a subwoofer for this particular setup. [ D  Nov 26, 2017 ]
I love Crutchfield and trust the comments and ratings from its customers. I am not a sophisticated technology person and appreciate to low key, but highly accurate advice from the company and customers. I purchased this unit as a gift and can't wait to hear the result. I am confident it will be glowing! I have never had a bad purchase with Crutchfield. Great products and variety, great prices, very knowledgeable staff and informative, easy to use website. I am a Fan. [ Robert  Nov 26, 2017 ]
Mainly purchased this sound bar to try out the DTS virtual X technology. Price, features, and high reviews definitely helped me in making this decision. Also, I want to see if I can delete my receiver, speakers, etc. and be happy with the results. [ CHAD  Nov 26, 2017 ]
Sound quality, DTS Virtual:X! [ Luis  Nov 17, 2017 ]
The size fit where I want to install it. Just over 2" deep. Also, it was recommended by my advisor, Marshall. [ KEN  Nov 15, 2017 ]
We chose this Sound bar because it's a little smaller than some and our TV room is pretty small, so we don't need a huge sound. The reviews mentioned dialogue clarity when there is also background music, and a least for our demographic {baby boomers ] that's what we need the most.. We will see how it plays out. [ Sydney  Nov 15, 2017 ]
I received a Crutchfield catalog. [ Joanne  Nov 15, 2017 ]
looks like a smart choice sound wise over the zevox.... we'll see :) [ Jeff  Nov 12, 2017 ]

Need soundbar [ ellins  Sep 02, 2017 ]
Seemed to the best buy-didn't want another subwoofer on the floor-just wanted better TV sound. Hope this will provide it. [ Robert  Sep 01, 2017 ]
Based on reviews, value for the price. [ Sharon  Aug 30, 2017 ]
Price and good reviews [ Deborah  Aug 22, 2017 ]
I already have a yas-206 am very pleased. [ RALPH  Aug 17, 2017 ]
The width is a perfect fit for my TV stand. The height is perfect because it will not block my TV's screen or remote sensor. The good reviews sealed the deal, and the sub out gives the opportunity to expand later. [ Adam  Jul 29, 2017 ]
Previous experience with Yamaha sound bars and Crutchfield reviews [ DAVID  Jul 25, 2017 ]

Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget. [ Krissy  Mar 14, 2018 ]  Staff
We use this sound bar to improve the quality of sound on movies we watch. You have to be aware of what connections; we use the digital optical interconnect between the two; the sound bar takes that; insure your TV has an optical audio out. [ MICHAEL J  Jan 14, 2018 ]
No. it is intended as a stand alone unit. The V481 likely has some type of "dialog lift" as my V681 and V475 do [ Aaron  Jan 14, 2018 ]
Yes [ ANDREW L  Jan 14, 2018 ]
Like John alluded to in his response above, the YAS-107 won't be able to "learn" your TV remote control signals--per the information provided in the owner's manual it appears the only choice for using your TV remote to control power/volume is by connecting the soundbar via HDMI. For more details or to discuss further, please contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Thanks! [ Larry  Jan 11, 2018 ]  Staff
I've had mine about five months, attached to my bedroom TV. HDMI passthru isn't critical. I run the HDMI source straight into my TV; and feed the TV optical audio back into the soundbar. In this setup, volume is controlled on the soundbar. If you don't mind sacrificing some audio quality, you could feed the TV composite audio (red/white RCA) back into the soundbar - but note that it's not the best sound, and functionality depends on your TV. You'll want the TV speakers completely OFF using the soundbar; but the TV might disable the VOL+/- keys when the speakers are OFF; the TV might not disable the speakers. That said, the YAS will not 'learn' remote codes (usually the remote learns device IR codes). It can be controlled using Yamaha's Bluetooth smartphone app; its own remote; or any number of universal IR remotes. I use a Harmony SmartHub with either the Harmony remote; or my iPhone or iPad (using either the Harmony or Yamaha apps). The Harmony hub makes it all operate seamlessly. As long as the hub is on WiFi, you can operate it using a smartphone or tablet app - it doesn't require a matching remote (although it's convenient to have one). [ JOHN P  Jan 09, 2018 ]
It depends on your DirecTV receivers and remotes. It will work with Genie STBs (including wireless Genie mini) and the RC71 remote. Note that using any STB or TV remote may not allow access to all soundbar settings. A good 3rd party universal remote should allow access to all settings. For example: I have a subwoofer attached to mine; the subwoofer level controls of the soundbar aren't available using DirecTV or TV remotes. They are, however, available using the Yamaha Bluetooth app via smartphone/tablet; and from my Harmony hub. [ JOHN P  Jan 09, 2018 ]
Have no idea! I just plugged mine in and it worked well. [ GEORGE T.  Dec 14, 2017 ]
This has been a great product, easy to install and great sound. But I am just an old geezer who wanted a better TV, so not a sophisticated enough user to answer your question. Thanks, [ Raymond  Dec 14, 2017 ]
I did the update and now my surround light goes to green and blue. Prior to the update it only went to green [ DAVID  Dec 14, 2017 ]
I asked Yamaha the same question. They said "no, if you can set it to 3D surround and see the blue light, the firmware upgrade was already installed at the factory." You can also tell by the sound difference. Not sure why Crutchfirld doesn't know this. Last time I asked, they didn't even know the YAS-107 was capable of DTS Virtual:X. [ Thomas  Dec 14, 2017 ]
I'm not sure, not something I'm familiar with [ Jeffrey M.  Dec 14, 2017 ]
It doesn't need Ethernet to work. It comes with an optical cable. That goes from your TV optical OUT to the soundbar optical IN. Your LG smart TV probably has an optical OUT. This is the most common way people use soundbars.. It has an IN for a mini stereo plug too, like for a CD player or MP3 player or whatever. This would be the way you hook up an old TV with only Red and White audio jacks, using a mini-stereo to RCA cable. It has an HDMI IN and an HDMI OUT (ARC) if you want to use it in between your cable box and your TV. Your LG probably has ARC so I would do that option, but you'd need HDMI cables. ARC would need to be enabled on your TV, it's in the audio settings. ARC is awesome so if you can do it that way, I'd recommend it. Basically anything playing from your TV would go through your soundbar, plus the TV volume and TV power controls the soundbar if ARC is enabled. The manual shows all the options of hooking it up. ARC is the best, but your TV needs ARC enabled, and you need (2) HDMI cables, which you might have already. Yamaha website has the manual for download if you want to see exactly how to hook it up. Google Yamaha YAS-107 owner's manual. Sound is stable and sounds really good. I watch Netflix all the time too, and I don't have to fiddle with volumes. Make sure you set your TV's volume to "fixed" or "speakers off" or whatever. You don't want your TV's weak speakers interfering with the sound from your nice soundbar. Usually it's a setting in your TV's audio menu. Merry Christmas! buy yourself this good soundbar [ DAVE  Dec 20, 2017 ]
Not thaI know of, but it has a good sound for the price [ DONALD WILLIAM  Dec 12, 2017 ]
I just looked at the manual and I'm pretty certain there is no way to add an additional amplifier to the unit. There are just no inputs for that type of device. It can be connected to a subwoofer, but it has to be a powered subwoofer. [ Stuart  Dec 12, 2017 ]
If your TV has ARC, then use HDMI between your cable box and soundbar (HDMI IN), and HDMI between soundbar (HDMI OUT/ARC) and TV. You need to find the ARC HDMI connector on your TV. You need to enable ARC in your TV's settings. Most newer TVs have ARC on at least one specific HDMI connector. With ARC, basically anything playing from your TV would go through your soundbar, plus the TV volume and TV power controls the soundbar. So even if your Chromecast is in an HDMI of your TV, the audio would still flow from the ARC-enabled HDMI cable of your TV to the soundbar. So put your chromecast/fire stick/roku on an HDMI of your TV that is NOT ARC-enabled, and use the ARC HDMI of your TV as the one facing the HDMI OUT/ARC of the soundbar. I hope this helps [ DAVE  Dec 21, 2017 ]
I have not tried using a Chromecast with this but my Roku device works great. I have a Samsung with a One Connect Box. I connected my cable box to HDMI 4 and my Roku to HDMI 3 and the Sound Bar audio works for both. When I switch to HDMI 4 the cable box works and I can hear it. When I switch to HDMI 3 the Roku works and I can hear it. Hope this helps. [ Mark  Nov 27, 2017 ]
No. It is actually pretty frustrating as every time I switch devices (change HDMI input) it requires me to shut off and turn back sound bar on. [ tiffany lee  Nov 27, 2017 ]
The version we offer is made for use in the North American market so, it only works off 120volts AC. [ Ryan  Nov 29, 2017 ]  Staff
If you have a Genie system and RC71 remote, it shouldn't matter whether you're connected via HDMI, optical, coax digital, or composite. The Remote Setup features built into the DirecTV settings menus will configure the RC71 to control the volume ON THE SOUNDBAR. It's not hard to get it setup, poke around in the Settings menus looking for Remote Setup - then follow the prompts. [ JOHN P  Jan 09, 2018 ]

There is an option to add a subwoofer, but no additional surround sound speakers. [ Stuart  Dec 12, 2017 ]
No. The YAS-107 does not support the addition of wired or wireless surround speakers. [ Ryan  Oct 02, 2017 ]  Staff

If you look at page 29 of the YAS-107 Owner's Manual, it gives instructions for syncing it with at TV remote. I haven't tried this yet, so I don't know if it could work with the DirecTV remote instead of the actual TV remote. [ Stuart  Dec 12, 2017 ]
IDK. We don't have Direct TV. [ Susan  Jul 18, 2017 ]
Not sure about DirecTv, but my Comcast remote does control the soundbar volume and power as well. [ Rick  Jul 17, 2017 ]
