The Yamaha YAS-203 sound bar features a stylish piano black finish.
Looking for an easy, effective way to add some excitement to movies and shows? The slim, elegant YAS-203 from Yamaha vastly improves the sound of your TV, and it looks great doing it. The sound bar's built-in full-range drivers dish out solid stereo sound, and you can engage Yamaha's Air Surround Xtreme virtual surround sound for more spacious effects. The potent wireless subwoofer goes anywhere you want — just plug it into an AC outlet. Bottom line: when the soundtrack designer decides to "go big" with pulse-pounding effects, so will this system.
If you have a Bluetooth-compatible smartphone, this sound bar offers a couple of very cool features. The first is wireless music streaming, so you can use the YAS-203 to enjoy your favorite tunes — great for MP3s stored on your device or streaming music from services like Pandora® Internet radio and Spotify. But Yamaha takes Bluetooth a step further than most sound bars: download the free Yamaha Home Theater Controller app to your Apple® or Android™ smartphone and use it as a remote. It lets you select your input and choose from different surround modes.
One cable is likely all you'll need to connect the YAS-203 to your TV to bypass its built-in speakers for room-filling sound. Choose from optical digital (included), coaxial digital, and RCA cables to connect your TV and start hearing movies and TV shows the way they were meant to sound. The included remote can learn your TV's power and volume commands. And a built-in IR repeater on the bar means that your TV remote will still work, even if the bar blocks the TV's infrared receiver.
Control the YAS-203 with your Apple® or Android™ smartphone.
Great overall sound at a reasonable cost.

Great overall sound at a reasonable cost.
Pros: Great sound Reasonable cost Easy set up
The unit that I ordered was defective as there was no surround sound. I had to return it.
This sound bar is an affordable solution if you don't want to spend lots of money or don't have space for a home theater system. The sound is great. The voices are crystal clear. Some reviews talk about not hearing the voices very well. I have experienced no such problem. This system is very loud and easily fills my home with magnificent sound. The setup is easy and only takes a few minutes. Everything you need is in the box including an optical cable. The pass through remote feature works perfectly with my system remote. I can control the soundbar power, volume and mute along with my tv and blue ray all with a single remote. I highly recommend the Yamaha YAS-203.
Pros: Great sound, easy setup, subwoofer pairs automatically, reasonably priced
Cons: None yet
Much improved sound. Affordable and easy to install. Crutchfield shipped immediately AND followed up to check on my satisfaction. Very pleased with their service.
Very Good sound at an affordable price.
very nice quality and very easy to set up and learn functions from my tv remote. sound is very good but would be perfect if it had a center tweeter. overall happy with purchase.
While watching movies the background noises are so loud you can barely understand the dialogue even when switched to clear voice mode. I sent it back. I am now in search of a sound bar with crystal clear dialogue, even if I have to go through 50 of them to find one.
Pros: The background noises in a movie sound great.
Cons: While watching a movie the dialogue is drowned out by the loud background noises, you have to listen very hard to hear what they are saying.
This is my first review of an AV product; I hope it helps save others time and money. I currently own a Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 which I use for my TV. After reading many great reviews for the Yamaha YAS-203, I decided to purchase it, in hopes it would be an upgrade from the cheaper Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 . I returned the Yamaha yesterday, as the Klipsch blows it away. In fact, in my opinion, the YAS-203 sounds so terrible compared to the Klipsch, I'm baffled at how others have rated it so high. Trust me, if you're looking for an inexpensive option to adding great sound to your TV, spend your money on the Klipsch. All ranges of sound on the Klipsch blow away the Yamaha. Very disappointed, but happy to have saved the money be sticking with what I already have.
Pros: Easy Set Up
Cons: Too many to list
Love it so far
Pros: Great punch for price. Univolume feature is awesome for commercials.
Cons: Too tall and blocks the remote sensor of Sony but I'll survive
This sound bar works well in my small TV room. True surround sound isn't needed in such a small room, but I would have liked more bass. The subwoofer doses give some vibration to the room sometimes
The unit works flawlessly when using the furnished remote, but the learning feature to use the TV remote has not yet worked. Sound quality is pretty good, especially when using Bluetooth from phone listening to music. Especially appreciate the subwoofer. The Clear Voice feature is OK, but would be better if the dialog was more beamed.
Pros: Sound, subwoofer, easy set up.
Cons: The learning function has not worked.
I went to a local big box store to listen to some sound bars to go along with my new 65" Tv. I spent a lot on the Tv so I wanted something nice but didn't have a lot of money left over. I listened to a JBL model and it sounded fantastic. I went home to see what the price online would be. After Googling sound bars for $400 or less this Yamaha kept coming up and getting great reviews. I decided to get the YAS-203. The unit was super easy to set up. Then the disappointment set in. My new TV hadn't come yet so I tried it out playing music from my iPhone. Sounded like crap! My iHome sounds better. There is ZERO bass response. Sounded very flat and muted. My TV came and I hooked it up to that. The sound did finally sound better but not by much. Still not much bass (I know you can adjust the sub woofer) that wasn't the problem. The voice quality is decent but here again not much better than the TV speakers themselves. My two other objections besides the huge disappointment in sound quality is the display on the unit. Confusing blinking LED lights that you have to refer to the manual to see what the series of blinks mean and there is no min and max indicators. Meaning you push the remote to increase the bass and it just keeps blinking the same LED. You don't know what level you are at. Same with the volume. Lastly the remote is a joke. It's shaped like a sardine can. The buttons are small and I have to use a flashlight to see what buttons I'm pressing. Sending
Pros: Hmmm. Easy to set up.....
Cons: Poor overall sound. Bad bass. Crappy small unusable remote.Crutchfield response on December 20, 2016 Whenever you are not completely satisfied with anything you purchase from Crutchfield, please contact our Customer Support team. Based upon the size of my tv- this product recommended was appropriate and made an instant impact in dialogue clarity of my flat scren. I had been uing er phones due to two story ceuling and oversized roim. Works great with 55 inch tv
Pros: Dialogue clarity, setup and remote, ease of use
Cons: No cons at this time- one month into use
The product worked great the first 3-6 months. Then the sound started cutting in and out. It has gotten progressively worse months 6-12 of ownership. Very disappointing.
Dialogue is clear and vibrant. I did a lot of research on soundbars. I even purchased a few locally and returned them all due to poor dialogue. I listen to trance, mostly electronic music and the highs are clear and crisp. If I listened to rock, I would probably be disappointed with the midrange, but it doesn't affect movie watching . I know this sound bar is being discontinued, however for the scratch and dent cyber Monday price I paid, this was an epic purchase.
Pros: Crisp Dialogue, solid bass response, easy to use.
Cons: Cannot add wireless rear surround.
Sounds great, easy to set up, my expectations were met.
Pros: Sounds great, easy to use, easy to set up
I was concerned about this unit based upon some of the reviews... overall, this works great in my bedroom! many setup options for different sound types. The wireless bluetooth sub synced flawlessly... and what really sold me is how the bar also syncs commands from your remote... I have U-Verse and the soundbar works flawlessly... power on and off... volume up and down.. and the Bluetooth works great with my smart phone... I don't think there is much out there with the same foot print and has the features that this one has... if there is any negative I would say the range of sound is lacking some in the middle... I think this is due to the lack actual speakers needed for true sound reproduction of mids and highs. .. again for what I'm using it for (bedroom), it works great!
Pros: Good sound, easy setup, feature rich, easy remote compatibility and bluetooth sub!!!
Cons: Range of sound is lacking some midrange...
It is exactly what it is described to be. Improves the sound experience without breaking the bank.
Sounds OK. I kinda expected better from Yamaha. I made my own wall bracket to install the sound bar, worked much better then using hollow wall anchors.
Cant beat this for the money. Very pleased.
Very nice product. With a little help the bar straddles the DVD player nicely. The sound quality is adequate. For us, it does well to cover the treadmill noise. We've been using the Bluetooth feature to play music from our phones. Like the piano gloss finish. Works very well. Very pleased with this product.
Pros: Good build quality. Good sound.
Cons: As some have said it may lack midrange. But I'm not such a audiophile. It does just fine.
Absolutely love the sound.
Pros: Set up is a breeze
Unit is rated at 200 watts. Does not deliver the volume expected in my living room in Bluetooth music mode. Volume of sound is acceptable for TV viewing.
Pros: Ease of Bluetooth connection. Fits under TV nicely Subwoofer
Cons: Bluetooth music volume
Installation was straight-forward. The Bluetooth connection to my laptop worked flawlessly, as did the process that allows my TV remote to operate soundbar functions (as opposed to having to use the soundbar remote). Sound quality is good for the price and as long as there aren't unrealistic expectations of component-system output, buyers shouldn't be disappointed. If you have the funds, better sound quality can be had from higher-priced systems.
I was excited initially about how quick it was to set up. The sound was standard at best. Bass was adequate but to increase the mid range the high became tinny and canned sounding. If you want a quick bedroom soundbar this is the one. If you can spend extra money do not skimp on the sound.
The unit is great!. Easy to set up. Sound quality can not be beat. Worth the price and then some.
Works great! Clear crisp sound!
I had been hesitant about soundbars since I bought an earlier generation one for my Dad a few years back, but wow have they come a long way since! I replaced a 4 channel surround sound set up with this bar and subwoofer and I wish I had done this years ago. It saved cabling and space in my condo and the sound is 10x better than I used to be getting. It is possible the crossovers in my old speakers had died based on the sound quality difference, but my music listening and movie watching experience has been greatly improved. The Bluetooth connection between the bar and the subwoofer is great - no cables! And the ability to play music from my phone to the system via Bluetooth is wonderful. Great product, Yamaha!
Pros: Great sound in a small package. Compact size of subwoofer. No cable from sound bar to subwoofer.
Excellent soundbar. It was simple to set up and it has enhanced our movie viewing. Bluetooth connectivity is very simple both with the subwoofer and portable devices. The Yamaha app is also very convenient and easy to use. Sound quality is great and for an item in this price range.
Very good system , quality is much improved over the TV speakers
Pros: Very simple and easy to connect, up and running in 15 minutes
Cons: None to date
True to all the great professional reviews I read prior to deciding to purchase it!
Have owned other Yamaha products which led me to expect a whole lot more from this soundbar. Doesn't feel or sound like a 200w system. Weak in the mid-range. Will likely move this soundbar from main 65" flat screen in family room to a guest bedroom.
Pros: Compact, Bluetooth, wireless powered bass.
Cons: Missing the wow factor. Sound quality just not there at normal volume.
Replaced an old Vizio soundbar with this and expected better sound quality based on reviews and price. Setup was exceptionally easy and it doesn't sound bad, I'm just a bit underwhelmed with the sound...which is "smaller" than the less expensive Vizio I replaced. I have this in a fairly large room and it just doesn't fill the room with sound the way my Vizio did.
Pros: -Easy set up -Very easy to use
Cons: -Sounds "small" to me -Expensive for sound quality
The system was very easy to install and easy to setup. It worked correctly on the first try! Sound quality is good and definitely an improvement over the TV speakers.
Pros: Great sound and clarity. Easy to install and use.
Cons: No HDMI (ARC) output; would have been nice.
For a slim design it puts out great sound and the wireless sub-woofer adds alot of thump for movies and music.
Pros: Easy to Use, great sound.
Cons: Optical cable is short.
The system was very easy to install and worked correctly on the first try. The quality and sound is good. Overall the Yamaha meets my needs.
Pros: ease of set up and operation
Cons: spoken word could be more distinct
I purchased this item to go with the 65 inch tv in my bedroom. I researched several sound bars and ended up going with this one because of all the outstanding reviews. Further, I have a high end Yamaha YSP in my theater room so I already knew there products are second to none. I have to say it's the perfect sized for my bedroom and the sound is exceptional. Movies sound amazing and music does as well. There doesn't appear to be any lagging. I would recommend this item to anyone looking in or above its price range. Lastly I'd like to say that with the discount I received from Crutchfield, there was no question on where to order. The transaction was smooth and I received the product within 3 days!
Pros: Sound, look, ease of use, color, brand
I find the sound bar very impressive with the music channels. The voice clarity is very good since the speakers are now out front as opposed to downward firing in the TV. The clear sound feature is also of some help with dialogue and allows for better understanding of these hosts and announcers who speak way too fast and have very poor diction. Overall, I am happy with this sound bar setup but I have nothing with which to compare it.
Pros: Very easy to set up and program to the cable remote following the instructions. Sub-woofer is a wireless connection. Nice looking package. Easy to mount on the wall under the TV.
Cons: A tad pricey?
Works perfect, can't complain about the price either. The wireless subwoofer works great. Also there is a phone app. controller, downloaded from the App.Store.
Pros: Quick Bluetooth conectivity no bugs. Optical cable included for conectivity to tv or Blu-ray player.
A good sound bar. TV sound is very good. Music, when turned up, is very good.
Pros: Ease of use, set up, & good sound.
Cons: Bass could be better but it would cost more.
Great Sound Bar for the money
Pros: Compact and looks nice sitting out. Excellent for watching TV and then change settings for movies or music
Cons: Optical cable kind of cheap, but easy to upgrade
Looks great, good sound,.easy set-up.
Pros: Easy set-up, not too large
This system was just what I wanted. Easy to setup, easy to use and sounds great. I definitely would recommend this to anyone looking for a great sounding easy to use HT sound bar .
Pros: Great sound, easy to use, easy to setup, low cost
Great soundbar. Definitely a step up from my Boston Accoustics soundbar. Is it as good as my 5.1 setup? No. However, I needed something that was simple and unobtrusive, and a soundbar fits the bill. Plays loud and clear with good bass in the action movies.
Pros: Good bass and clarity. More spacious than my older soundbar.
Cons: None so far.
for the price paid, the speakers sound very good and hooking the system up was very easy. After having used it for a while, I'd definitely purchase the speaker system again. I especially like the Bluetooth capability for use with other devices.
Great value for the money. Clean, crisp sound with solid bass. Perhaps a little mushy in the mid-tone crossovers, but that's a common enough problem. Varies with the input source. Bluetooth sound from my phone and tablet are both excellent.
Pros: Great sounds for the money -- really enhances the TV experience, but I like for music as well. Nice design. Love the wireless subwoofer. Definitely sounds better at higher volume. Use your equalizer at lower volumes.
Cons: Interface is kind of obscure. Not a lot of visual feedback for the modes, sources, etc. -- especially from across the room. App is only so-so. But these are not deal-breakers by a long shot.
Setup is very simple, and using the soundbar couldn't be easier. It just doesn't sound good. High end has a hissy, flat quality, there's almost no midrange, and the subwoofer is not very distinct. Maybe I'm expecting too much for my money, but for not much more I can get a stereo receiver and a couple good speakers.
Pros: Easy to set up and use. Bluetooth is convenient.
Cons: Sound is sub-par. Subwoofer is large and output is muddy. Treble is hissy and flat.
It's has good sound quality
Unlike some others, I found the woofer to be understated, but effective. Wish it could be adjusted higher. The sound bar works very well. You have to turn it up quite a bit to get the full effect. But far better then your TV speakers. Crutchfield techs. were so very helpful on the phone helping me connect it as Iam not a wire whiz :O) What wonderful customer service.... a rarity these days.
Cons: On lower sound setting voices are a bit muffled, even with Clear Voice on. It like you wish you could turn up the treble setting. Wish (and maybe you can) add a couple of small wireless speakers to enhance sound effect.
My Samsung TV speakers are just terrible. Sound is muffled, and my wife continuously complained she couldn't understand the dialogue. So I decided on this sound bar based on reviews. Connecting it up was amazingly simple -- power cord and optical cable for sound bar, and power cord for the subwoofer. Everything worked right away with minimal effort. Sound is 10X better than what was coming out of the TV. Side benefit was the bluetooth connectivity to my iPhone -- easy to connect up and play music over it. Sounds great.
Pros: Ease of hookup, sound quality, features
very easy to install. Bass is a bit overpowering even at the lowest setting.
I bought this item after a great CNET review on it. This product was labeled as #1 sound bar in 2015 by CNET. The sound for this sound bar is great but I expected much more from a #1 sound bar.
Great addition to my new Samsung Tv. Big upgrade from speakers that came with the Samsung.
Pros: Great sound and clarity. Nice base sound not over powering. Easy to hook up and great looking. My first experience with Crutchfield and I will be back !
Cons: This is not that bad but I would prefer an hdmi.
This thing is pretty darn good. I didn't think the 200 watts was going to be sufficient but it definately fills my 20x20 family room. The surround sounds good for tv/movies and stereo for music. I like the clear voice for dialogue. Best price you can spend on easy to install soundbar.
Pros: Ease of install and use.
Cons: Small remote, can't tell when certain modes are on or off.
Easy to hookup. Clear instructions. TV soundtrack doesn't get as loud as music input. But it is all I need so I like it.
I never had a sound bar before. The product arrived very quickly and setting it up seemed pretty easy. I'm choosing not to mount the sound bar to the wall. The sound quality is much improved from the speakers on my Sony Bravia TV. I'm still trying to get the Direct TV remote to play nicely with the sound bar. So far everything seems great.
Pros: Set-up, and sound quality.
Cons: None at this time.
This is the first sound bar I've ever purchased. I was concerned that I wouldn't have the depth of sound and clarity I wanted with the new TV I just got, and being hearing impaired, the sound and especially the dialogue is always 90% of the deal. The salesman recommended this bar, and I was curious about the function that was supposed to enhance dialogue clarity. It's all it claimed to be. The installation and calibration is simple, and the sound and dialogue rendition is impressive. I have a 5.1 system on another TV, and this would give it a run for the money. A wise purchase.
Pros: Small footprint. Great dialogue clarity. Easy sound adjustments. Excellent owners manual.
Truly amaIng sound for the price. Technology at its best
Pros: Sinple setup with rich surround sound.
Purchased this to improve the audio from our 30" Samsung in our kitchen. The audio from the TV speakers were unbearable! Now i can stand to be in the kitchen with the TV on. Perfect set up for a smaller tv application needing to be 2.1 in a smaller width, (which to my surprise were scarcely available).
Pros: ease of setup, sound quality
great sound, dialog easy to understand; adjustable for movies or music to increase experience
Great sound bar especially for the price. Bluetooth works great and my tv remote learned the remote easily. Great sound with music and movies.
Pros: Bluetooth, bass, price, remote
Cons: None really, experts all say needs hdmi but I'm fine
Great deal on line and super easy to install, took minutes
The unit is nice for the money. I used it as a secondary to my full system. Doesn't have any lower mids as the sub tries to cover those frequencies but cannot. It is not reasonable to expect a sound bar to have the fidelity of a amp/speaker setup.
Pros: Easy to install. Voice in movies is very good
Cons: None as I received the product quickly and performs to my expectations.
great clean sound allaround great performance
Pros: ease of use
I like it...a bit "tinney" with the music...good bass for the price
Pros: Good bass for a relatively inexpensive product
Cons: A bit "tinney" with music
While not anywhere near the quality of a true, dedicated, Home Theater System, it is a good bang for the buck and definitely improves the sound.
Pros: Very easy to set up. Bluetooth works well. It sounds MUCH better than the internal speakers of the 55" Samsung Smart TV I am using this with.
Cons: It is a little "tinny" in the upper range. The largest complaint that I have is the Sub tends to be boomy and rattly unless it is turned down quite a bit.
Great for Movies, sports is OK
Pros: #Ease of use great.
Cons: voice a little muffled
So much better than my previous sound bar. Enjoying the TV music much more than before. The voices are a little muffled. I have not tried the Bluetooth Connectivity yet.
Pros: Nice bass and music sound.
Cons: Would like more tonal control, but maybe need a more sophisticated unit.
Excellent, easy to use, good assistance, prompt shipping
Sounds great and is quite an improvement over the TV speakers as you would assume. Easy to set up and works seamlessly with our TV remote.
Great sound bar, amazingly easy to set up! Very powerful sound. Only thing is that it won't sync up with more than one Bluetooth device at a time.
Easy to set up. Changed location of sub-woofer for better line of sight and system works great.
Pros: Looks great. Easy to connect and sync. We like the additional effects of sound and clarity of movies. Once set volume rarely needs to be adjusted for different programs.
Cons: Need to be conservative with delay, echo can get distracting.
After watching my kids, mom, babysitter, and others struggle to get 'all of the buttons pushed' on my larger home theater system (Denon receiver, Energy 5.1 Micro System), I decided to try and simplify with a decent soundbar. After all of the RAVE reviews, on this site and others (including WHATHIFI, a more snobby audiophile-respected publication), I bought this soundbar. It sounds much better than the sound from my 50" Samsung, with a plus that my girls can play their '1D' (One Direction) from their iPhones with much better sound than the blairing, nauseating, mid-range shreaking, tone of an iPhone at max volume....hideous. First, the good. It was VERY easy to hookup. It looked great. Though no mention of a Yamaha Soundbar app was mentioned in the Yamaha instructions that I saw, at 1st Bluetooth connect attempt I was notified that there was an app so I installed it. This soundbar is very easy to use, reasonably priced, sounds decent, and my kids, mom, guests think it sounds great and really like how easy it is to use. If you can use the TV remote, those are typically all the buttons needed. Not so good. The sound is not all I expected after reading the reviews. The cabinet resonances and colorations are detectable, especially at higher volumes. It sounds like a plastic box, because it is a plastic box. Sub performance not on par with other subs I have used. Bass is there, but not authoritative. Though the app has tone controls, they are grayed out.
Pros: - Haven't seen or heard anything better with same features, for this application, at this price point. - VERY easy to hookup - Very easy to use - Looks great - Reasonably priced - Sounds decent at this price point
Cons: - Not high-end sound. - Colored plastic sound from a colored plastic cabinet. Leans more tonality a little to lower midrange, making some dialog 'chesty'. - No tone controls - Simulated 7.1 surround? Really? No. But it is interesting to try and figure out how the sound is changing when you engage it!
I bought this product a couple of weeks ago and I absoluty love it! Great sound, easy to use and only 1 cable! Here in PR the mayority of houses are made with concrete so passing cables through the wall to hide them is not really an option. Not a equipment to compare to other surround, multiple speakers systems, but good buy overall.
Pros: Easy to use Bluetooth Great sound for a sound bar
Cons: None at this moment.
Really easy to attach and use. Straightforward controls. What a difference in the audio reception!
Absolutely outstanding! Simple setup and adjustment. A 100% improvement over the built-in speakers. Glad I decided to go with Yamaha.
Pros: Clarity Adjustability Appearance Value
Cons: Absolutely none
Given the open design of the main living part of the house, surround sound was just not practical. This sound bar is a huge improvement over the TV sound. And if you are not too much of an audiophile and not requiring of a really immersive movie experience, this is a great choice.
Pros: Easy to set up. Can teach your TV and cable/satellite remote to handle power, volume, and mute. The native remote is simple and effective. The mobile phone app does the basics very well. The built in IR repeater is great if the sound bar covers the IR receiver on the TV.
Cons: A number of reviewers point to the lack of HDMI as a con. If your TV has optical out, there is no need for HDMI. The sound bar is designed to have all inputs go into the TV, all switching done in the TV, and then a single output to the sound bar. Works perfectly as designed and keeps the price down.
Easy Connectivity. Great shipping.
Pros: Sound and sub. A+ rating
Cons: Could potentially get slightly louder
Fantastic sound. Easy to hook up and use. Bluetooth is great too. I have a stereo but use this for my tv. Best purchase I have made in a very long time.
Great sound for the price (bought on sale) and easy to install. I haven't had any of the bluetooth connectivity issues mentioned in other reviews. If you're looking for a soundbar under $500 I would highly recommend it!
Pros: Sound, TV Remote Repeater function, Uni-Volume
Cons: No HDMI
Getting older and having ring in the ears makes it difficult to understand voices on the cheap TV speakers. This greatly enhances the sound clarity.
Pros: Very easy to mount. Sound is of great quality for the price. The mobile app is convienent and bluetooth works seamlessly
Cons: Haven't come across any yet.
This sound bar (with subwoofer) is a big improvement over the sound in my Samsung TV, but overall I'm a little disappointed, given the price tag. My main criticism is that spoken dialogue sounds a bit muffled to me, like it's coming out of a box (about the size of the sound bar!). I have to turn up the volume to hear it clearly, at which point sound effects and music become overpoweringly loud. To avoid spooking my cats, I have to adjust the volume up and down accordingly. On the positive side: (i) set up is easy (connect optical cable between sound bar and TV, and plug in the sound bar and subwoofer); and (ii) music sounds great, e.g., I was transfixed by a youtube video of one of my favorite bands the first night I hooked up the device. I should say I haven't tried out any other sound bars or speaker systems, so I don't know how the Yamaha YAS-203 compares to other available options.
Pros: Ease of setup, good music reproduction.
Cons: Spoken dialogue a bit muffled; yet another remote to deal with.
I am very satisfied with this speaker. The ease in connecting to made my day.
Pros: sound, looks good, easy to use
I have a Bose system in one of my bedrooms and is awesome. Only problem with it is it needs to mounted on the wall, or sitting on a stand or shelf. I got this Yamaha YAS203 based on reviews, and the fact that I could use a soundbar mount on my tv wall mount. I mounted the Yamaha soundbar on to the tv wall mount in my master bedroom, set it up, cranked it up. Just as awesome. Like any other subwoofer, you find the sweet spot in the the room, and it puts out some pretty good bass for a 6-1/2" speaker. Soundbar looks good also.
Pros: Great sound. Bluetooth feature a plus. Nice compact design Moneys worth.
Cons: Buttons on remote control can be confusing. Got a universal remote. Problem solved.
GREAT ADDITION TO MY NEW SAMSUNG SMART TV! THANK YOU CRUTCHFIELD FOR SUGGESTING IT! TOM P.
Easy to set up. Sound is good and definitely an improvement over the TV speakers.
This is nice and easy to setup but the speakers do vibrate and drone at higher volumes
Pros: Easy to setup wall mount or freestanding
Cons: Cannot turn up to loud because the bar gets a weird vibrate or rattle noise to it
The Yamaha YAS-203 is our first soundbar, and it does not disappoint. It was easy to set up; the remote control was fine. It blocks the IR port on our TV, so the pass-thru IR was critical, and works fine. The wireless woofer worked like a charm right out of the box. We especially like the dialog clarity feature, a big help to us.
Pros: Dialog Clarity Ease of set-up and use IP pass-thru
So far, so good. Easy setup and sound is much better than my Panasonic sound bar (no subwoofer)
The sound isn't all that good.
except Bluetooth... It's unique.. Sound quality is superior than other competitors in this range.
I found it easy to install and everythign connected quickly. Really like the clear voice button when I switch over to the news or gameshows.
Pros: Another great Yamaha product
I bought a new TV and thought I should do something to upgrade the sound. After a bunch of research, I saw this got very good reviews for the price. I bought it and was not disappointed. Very easy to install and I love the subwoofer being wireless. Now, if you think this is going to replace a $1500 unit for listening to music, you probably would be disappointed. There is a bit of a gap in the midrange, where you would expect. But for the price, you can't beat it. It is a huge upgrade over the TV sound.
Pros: Price Easy to install Wireless subwoofer
Cons: None that I see
Overall - vastly improves your T.V. and music enjoyment. Excellent timely delivery by Crutchfield. Very nice sound for the money, easy set up once you realize there's a skinny little connection cord hidden inside the packaging.
Pros: Wonderful improvement in sound quality and thus viewing and listening experience. Once you've heard this you know you want a sound bar!
Cons: Excellent for a 40 some inch T.V. - the sound bar may be a little small for a larger screen.
Product quality is low. You would expect more from Yamaha. Returned it and getting a different soundbar.
Cons: Sound poor for a product that at this cost. Have heard better quality from a cheaper system....
Sounds fantastic. Easy to set up.
Pros: Price, value, quality, and ease.....
Great product for the money. Makes any movie more enjoyable to watch. Even enhances regular broadcast channels
Pros: Price, wireless ,,sound
Cons: Don't sound as good as a complete sorrounder sound.
Great for a small area.
Pros: Good bass sound easy to set up.
Cons: Remote to small will get lost between couch pillows.
Received the first unit arrived defective. the process of return and exchange was incredibly fast. Crutchfield people take seriously their customer service quality. . second unit came without any defect. the connection was very simple. an optical cable from the soundbar to the TV, the subwoofer connects wirelessly and easy. Subwoofer produces excellent bass enough for a medium sized room . surround sound for movies is acceptable for a 2.1 system . the sound quality of music is balanced , clear and pleasant . the bluetooth connection was achieved without any problem through my iphone 5s . yamaha Control app lets you use your phone as a remote control. The unit is glossy black color. After a week of use in my opinion is an excellent system for the price you pay. later will write an updated review.
Pros: Easy connection. Remote control isn't tiny. Sound great on DVD, bluerray, pandora, Netflix. No issues. Good dialogue clarity. Surround sound effect sound great at mid to high volume.
Cons: No hdmi (but I don't need). Surround sound less noticeable at low volume.
We have noticed a definite improvement in the sound quality while watching television programs, Netflix, and DVDs. I have listened to Pandora music stations, and the sound is fine, but not like my mini Bose speaker. I didn't buy it for music though. My husband had been increasing the volume on the TV, and I knew it was time for a sound bar. The gentleman on the phone, who helped me decide, suggested this product. It was easy to set up, arrived quickly, and we are both very pleased with this purchase.
Pros: Easy to set up - Good sound - Attractive
Easy to setup, but it's volume is limited...which is fine for TV viewing, but I also use AppleTV through it for AirPlay music and its' not loud enough for that. Subwoofer connects right out of the box, but is almost unnoticeable. I haven't tried Bluetooth since I run virtually all music through iTunes/AirPlay. I should've gone with my first instinct which was the Klipsch unit, I have never been disappointed with their speakers.
Pros: Easy setup, quick connection and no wireless issues with the subwoofer
Cons: Not loud enough and subwoofer (even with bass-boost) is almost unnoticeable.
Very good product for the price range.
Pros: Great sound, Low Price
Cons: The system must be turned up almost all the way up to get a good movie sound experience.
Seems like a great unit for the price. It won't wake the neighbors, but that's not what it's intended for.
NOT BAD FOR THE PRICE, GOOD PERFORMANCE FOR BEDROOM.
Pros: NOT BAD FOR THE PRICE, GOOD PERFORMANCE FOR BEDROOM. GREAT LOOK
Cons: NO HDMI
Very happy with it. Sounds great and simple to set up and use.
Pros: Good sound for the price. Super easy to setup and use. A very nice alternative to either spending more money on a surround system or dealing with wires everwhere.
Cons: The only con I can think of is it's not a replacement for a dedicated stereo system for music only. It sounds ok, but not great. But that's not really what it's for either.
good sounding, easy hook-up, paired to Bluetooth quickly, overall, good value
Pros: Bluetooth,features, sound quality
Great soundbar, very pleased with purchase. Easy to set up, well integrated with Samsung TV, excellent sound for such a compact unit. Dialogue could be crisper (maybe a setting I need to adjust?)
Pros: Good sound, easy set-up, compact, good looking
Cons: Dialogue could be crisper.
Very easy setup. Out of the box and everything hooked up in less than 6 minutes. Subwoofer connects automatically. I never new how terrible my TV speakers really were until I installed this. After listening to the Yamaha 203 for a few days I turned it off and listened to just the TV speakers to compare...WHAT A DIFFERENCE, IT'S INCREDIBLE!
As an engineer by trade, I have a distinct problem of sometimes over-evaluating gadgets and such prior to purchase. Needless to say I spent a decent amount of time researching a sound bar with wireless sub. Besides technical data analysis and numerous reviews from this site and others, I spent time listening to several of the mid price range and higher price range options. Remember that your ears are the final deciding point. My room is a fully furnished basement room with two couches and comfy chairs, bookcase, and pool table. The room size approximately 16'x 35'. The ceiling is only 7.5' and finished in sheet rock. There is full carpeting and bead board paneling. The TV (60") viewing area is approximately 16'x16', yet the listening area is the full room. There is a fundamental difference between a 2.1 and 5.1 (or 7.1) speaker system. All 2.1 systems that claim to be 5.1 do so through simulation. That being said, this Yamaha 203 does an excellent job of simulating full surround sound. Remember to place the sub away from the sound bar towards the rear of the seating area. Yes, the sub seems a bit small, and bass frequency is a pure derivative of speaker displacement, this sub sounds bigger than it's physical size. We do have the sub volume turned to max (which is a feature found mostly on higher priced systems). The set-up was simple as the sub automatically pairs when you first turn it on. The Bluetooth was just as easy. Very happy with this product.
Pros: Music sounds great. Dr. Dre's Next Episode (caked up) was strong! Set-up is easy. Sounds bigger that it looks. Fast shipping from Crutchfield and package was intact.
Cons: None for this price point.
This is an absolutely amazing product, as sound bars go - easy to install, great performance. Clear winner, especially in terms of price-performance ratio.
I had a sound bar that I had purchased at large retail chain for $150.00. It was loud but I would have to turn it up to hear the dialogue which would then cause me to jump out of my seat when a loud special effect would occur. So, I called Crutchfield to ask for their expert opinions on what would be a good option for me. I live in a small apartment and I wanted something the was great with dialogue. The advisor recommended the YAS-203 and I have not been disappointed! The sound is nicely articulated and even. I can clearly hear the dialogue at all levels and the sound effects are reproduced seamlessly with the dialogue. Problem solved!. The surround sound is fine in my tiny apartment, but if you are wanting true enveloping surround sound one of the more expensive Yamaha sound bars is a better option. Overall, I am very happy with the YAS-203 and with Crutchfield's excellent customer service and support. Thanks to everyone at Crutchfield!
Pros: Easy to set up and use. Great with Dialogue and music. Sound is well defined and movies sound very good. Looks great.
Cons: The surround sound is not as enveloping as I would like, but hey a 2.1 system can only do so much.
This product was easy to set up, and worked great, right out of the box. The sound is great. The Bluetooth app is fun, and was easy to deploy.
Pros: Easy set-up, good sound, great looks.
Cons: Wish the bar had a small LCD display,,, When setting up, it "talks" back to you with lights blinking (like center 3 lights blink 3 times when Bass Booster is activated, and once when deactivated). But, if you have the manual you're ok.
Great sound and at $400 its well worth it. I am pleased overall.
Pros: Installation, design, and sound
This system provides incredible sound. The installation was pretty easy. I can control the system really well from my standard cable box remote control too.
Pros: nice sound, easy installation
Cons: There is no off switch for the sub woofer, so it is always on, yet it is silent when there is no audio for it.

YAS Front Surround System: The Yamaha YAS-203 is a two-component home theater system composed of an active soundbar speaker and wireless powered subwoofer that produces a 200-watts of total power. The soundbar speaker with AirSurround Xtreme technology and the wireless powered subwoofer delivers virtual surround sound from a simple to setup two-component speaker system. The Yamaha YAS-203 is a great addition to your flat-panel TV, replacing your television's speaker with rich, virtual surround sound. The soundbar's front-panel and top have a glossy "piano black" finish that harmonizes beautifully with today's flat-panel TVs, while the wireless powered subwoofer can be hidden out of sight for a stylishly compact home theater system.
Active Soundbar Speaker: The soundbar speaker houses a 50-watt x 2-channel digital amp and two 2.125" full-range drivers with large magnets to ensure high sound clarity. Its superb structural design allows high capacity cabinet volume for very powerful and clear sound, even though the body is very slim. The grilles protecting the speaker unit is a saran net that allows unimpeded sound flow. All sounds, including vocals and music, are clear and pleasant.
Wireless Powered Subwoofer: The YAS-203 includes a wireless powered subwoofer that houses 6.5" woofer inside a bass-reflex cabinet powered by a built-in 100-watt amplifier. This 6.5" subwoofer features a large magnet and a front-firing configuration, while the port is side-firing. The 100W amp's circuit board has an ideal grounding pattern that ensures stable current supply for deep, accurate bass output every time. This subwoofer is capable of delivering powerful movie effect sounds and rich, deep bass.
Dolby Digital/DTS Compatible: The YAS-203 home theater system is compatible with popular surround sound formats, such as Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround, so you get the full effect of multichannel movie sound.
Audio Enhancements: The Yamaha YAS-203 system offers a variety of audio settings to enhance your listening experience.
Digital + Analog Connections: The Yamaha YAS-203 is equipped with one optical (toslink) digital input, one coaxial (RCA) digital input, and one analog stereo (RCA) input. The optical and coaxial digital inputs support up to 5.1ch multichannel audio and are compatible with Dolby Digital & DTS..
Note: The digital optical output terminals of most newer flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).
Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Yamaha YAS0203 features built-in Bluetooth (v2.1+EDR) for wireless connection to your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Blackberry, Windows PC, Mac Computer, and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. You'll be able to stream stored music and music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, or computer to the Yamaha soundbar speaker system. You will still control your music and view song/artist information from your Bluetooth-enabled device.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Yamaha YAS-203.
Remote App: Download Yamaha's free Home Theater Controller app for Apple iOS (5.0+) or Android (2.3.3+) to easily perform a variety of functions from your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad or Android smartphone/tablet. Basic functions include Input Selection and Volume Up/Down. You can also use the app to choose between five surround modes - Movie, Sports, Game, Music, or TV program.
Note: This remote app requires an active Bluetooth wireless connection between the Yamaha soundbar system and your Apple or Android mobile device.
Remote Control: The YAS-203's IR remote control is simple and easy to use. It lets you turn the power On or Off, adjust the volume, and do other basic operations.
Auto-Sleep Function: The system will automatically turn off when there is no operation for 8 hours, or no audio input and no operation for 20 minutes.

Not a "one size fits all" answer for this. Will depend on how critical an ear you may have. There are any number of web pages for subwoofer placement guidelines (not to mention your friendly Crutchfield adviser), and how to place for best sound. That said, aesthetics often overrule the "best" audio placement. Fortunately, the bass is largely non-directional, and just having the module "somewhere" is better than not having that bottom end at all. The bass level is somewhat adjustable, and that can help whatever the final module location. [ TERRENCE Feb 26, 2017 ]
I place the subwoofer close to the listening position, mine is behind the couch. This location was recommended by the subwoofer manufacturer for my music system. Hope this helps. [ Robert Jan 17, 2017 ]
I found that putting it on the floor about 10 ft. from the bar is working good for me. I would suggest trying different location's and find what works best for you. David [ DAVID Jan 17, 2017 ]
Yes, you can place it anywhere in the room where there is an electrical outlet. I experimented and found out it sounded best when placed on the opposite side of the room. [ Jeffrey Jan 17, 2017 ]
My subwoofer is offset from the tv and soundbar roughly 3 feet to the right. Try to give it a few inches away from all other objects to minimize unintended vibration noises. Quality in the lower frequencies feel less placement dependant directionally since the driver fires downward. You will be happ if you stay close to those guidelines. [ Michael Jan 16, 2017 ]
I agree with the other responses. [ Robert Jan 17, 2017 ]
You should not have problem since both have digital optical audio. [ Aixa Dec 20, 2016 ]
You can use this sound bar with any tv that use fiber optic cable and RCA plug for audio [ Samuel Dec 17, 2016 ]
As ling as you are running the sound feom it into the bar you should have no problem [ Michael Dec 17, 2016 ]
Yes, most universal remotes will work with the unit. I say most as not all universal remotes are compatible with all products and without knowing what remote you intend to use, I cannot say yes 100%. [ Michael Jul 19, 2016 ]
Phyllis, It will not sync up with my DirectTV remote even though I am using HDMI Cables. It will link up with my Samsung remote for my TV with an HDMI Cable but that remote won't operate everything on my Direct TV receiver. I have to use the Yamaha remote to control volume. Although that does not detract from the quality of the sound system which I truly enjoy. Vince [ VINCENT Jul 19, 2016 ]
Yes. Semi-easy setup. [ Horia Jul 19, 2016 ]
Yes; 100%. I have this system for over a year, so I don't remember the steps, but I can tell you not only I can control the sound with the TV remote, I am now controlling it with my Comcast remote. [ David Jul 19, 2016 ]
I never used the feet because it is not wide enough to straddle the base of my TV stand. I think that it sounds great. [ Jeff Feb 18, 2016 ]
no [ paul Feb 18, 2016 ]
It has a curvature on the speakers so removing the feet is minuscule at best. It would only lower it about 1/8 inch. The sound can be made to be a clear voice or a uni-volumn(no more loud commercials) or crank it up if your not bothering the neighbors. Great unit at a great price. [ KENNY Feb 18, 2016 ]
I have never removed the feet, but it shouldn't affect. The sound is very good! [ Aixa Feb 18, 2016 ]
Without the feet it would slide all over the place and it only adds about 1/8 inch to the overall height (non-issue) The two great features I like and are hard to find are the clear voice. Seems like mumbling is in style and it really works. The other is the uni-volumn so you don't have to grab remote when a commercial comes on. [ KENNY Feb 18, 2016 ]
This unit has a very low profile, any modern tv's attached stand will raise the screen above where this sits. As for the "feet" - they are incrediblely minimal and do not impact the height by any meaningful amount. [ Michael Feb 18, 2016 ]
please disregard, I found the answer. Thank you. [ Chris Feb 18, 2016 ]

I wasn't happy with mine... Had to exchange it for the same model and still wasn't happy. The subwoofer never picked up. It seemed to have paired from all indication, but no output on bass whatsoever [ SIDNEY Nov 27, 2015 ]
The US model only works on 110VAC. There are other models that work on different voltages but it does not seem like there is a 110/220 version. [ Daniel Nov 24, 2015 ]
The volume has a good step up range [ brandon Oct 13, 2015 ]
The Yamaha unit volume control increments are small enough to be smooth. I have not had trouble finding the right level. Lights on the front of the unit show the volume change to give indication of the command. [ Daniel Oct 12, 2015 ]
It uses a simple control and the steps in volume are solid, I have never had a problem finding just the right setting. [ Michael Oct 11, 2015 ]
It's also incremental here, too. I'm seeing about fifty steps from zero to full blast, with LOUD occurring around thirty-five. I bought this Yamaha based on prior satisfaction with their sound bars. Note: the remote for the YAS-203 measures about 4-1/2" x 2" x 5/8", small and therefore awkward for my large hand. [ Monte Oct 11, 2015 ]
I do not believe there is a provision on the unit (no USB port) to make software upgrades. [ Daniel Sep 08, 2015 ]
John, I'm not aware of this unit having that capability. In my eight month ownership, the need for update hasn't come up. This may be a question better posed to a Yamaha rep. [ Monte Sep 08, 2015 ]

Yes, this soundbar can be connected to a PC using the soundbar's analog input. However, the audio quality of the soundbar is not at its best when using the analog input. The soundbar has digital inputs for use with TVs, blu-Ray players, etc. which provide the best sound quality. [ Daniel Apr 24, 2015 ]

No it does not. It is Bluetooth capable and easy to use [ John Hammond Mar 26, 2015 ]
No, this unit is why people like myself buy this. You do not need a receiver to power the speakers; hence no AM/FM tuner built in. This is a simple unit to use. Setup and use very simple. Also has a uni volume control for those commercials that seem to overpower you and a clear voice control so what is being said is easier to decipher. If you are wanting a unit with a tuner then you will need to buy a receiver and then get a 5 speaker system for surround sound. I am now in an apartment but before I bought a 7/1 (7 surround speakers) for my house from Crutchfield and it would rattle the house (a wonderful system). In an apartment, I have to be more considerate of my neighbors. Also, setting up one with all the wiring can be a daunting task. What you have in the YAS-203 is a very nice "sound bar" with a subwoofer for the lows in a nice package at a great price. [ KENNY Mar 26, 2015 ]
