Leftover lemon from manufacurer that seems about to go out of business

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Despite the elegant control layout and excellent sound quality of a surprisingly sensitive tuner, this unit was a piece of junk. It could not play a complete CD under any circumstances (never more than 7 or 8 tracks), the clock randomly switched to random times, and the remote wire would not switch on an external subwoofer (subwoofer worked fine when I wired it through the cigarette lighter instead). To make matters worse, Blaupunkt has zero support resources, and from would I could gather from other reviews and news articles about the company, it has been bought and sold to the point that what's left is not really even Blaupunkt, and even that hollow shell of a once great manufacturer won't be around for long.

Pros: Sound quality (when it worked) and control layout. Crutchfield graciously refunded the full purchase price of this unit so I could buy something else.

Cons: All of the above, plus it didn't actually fit in my vehicle.

Pros: unit seems to be high quality

Cons: unit has too many ghost keys and sound quality was less than expected

Great radio, with the exception of RDS clock adjustment

Alan from Rochester, MN on 2/10/2016

    2004 Pontiac Vibe
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Blaupunkt Cupertino 220 fits perfectly into my 2004 Pontiac Vibe - the red/blue/white motif matches my interior nicely. I am impressed with the tuner - pulls in stations I didn't know existed in my area. The user menu is confusing at first, but with a little practice the logic actually makes sense. Sound is solid, but not exceptional - but that is probably due to my speakers. My only real issue is with the clock. Now one would assume that a new car radio could keep time. This radio will adjust your clock via RDS - regardless if you have RDS on or off. So if your local FM radio station broadcasts RDS and they happen to not care about the time they are broadcasting - this radio will pick up that data and then change your manually set time - even if you have RDS off. So -if you don't care about the clock settings on your radio, this may the radio for you....

Pros: Great sound, design and overall package. NIce value.

Cons: Clock adjusts to RDS broadcasts - even if RDS is turned off.

Excellent CD Receiver. With the supplied wiring adapter and instructions it was an easy install. Any questions were readily answered by Crutchfield tech support.

Pros: Excellent product for the price.

Cons: Absolutely terrible Blaupunkt operating instructions. Had and have to rely on Crutchfield techs for instructions.

I 1st got a Panasonic HD radio which was too much for the wife- Crutchfield did a no problems swap for this radio. After I wired it all up it would not power on, I checked everything out and fuse on back of radio was not seated well -- all good now. Once set up this is very straight forward to use and wife loves it (happy wife, happy life) as the cd player went out on her factory radio. This unit has great sound , pulls in way more stations and looks good.

Pros: RDS feature to show song and station info which factory radio did not have- customer support at Crutchfield

A dandy replacement for OE deck that died after 25. Cake to install. Great sound made better will upgraded speakers. Subtle lighting and just enough display options to avoid distraction . Looks darn good in one of BMW's perfect interior designs

Pros: It is cheap enough. Excellent instructions, but please print a copy and put in shipping box with unit.

Cons: Had to go home or office from garage to print instructions from .pdf file attached to emailed receipt. Good grief! Contributed more carbon to planet by driving than 6 sheets of paper from sacred pine trees would save.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 2nd Blaupunkt from Crutchfield and I can't help bu be impressed. Very clean looking unit with easy to use controls. Radio reception is fantastic(about the best of any units I've ever used). Overall just a very solid unit that makes a nice upgrade over factory without looking out of place in the dash.

Pros: Very clean looking unit. Easy to use controls. Incredible radio reception.

Cons: Mounting depth is a bit deep(but I knew it was going to be a tight fit in an '04 Vibe when I ordered it).

Cons: CD player overheats and shuts down after 3 to 4 tracks, My 8 track from the 70's had better quality sound. The USB port is so cheap the thumb drive will fall out on the interstate highway. FM reception works like a satellite dish in the rain.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a decent unit for the price. It sound better than my factory system, but it doesn't give that wow factors that the Blaupunkt from the 80's and 90's use to give me. Blaupunkt has undoubtedly cut back on quality.

Pros: Easy to install and operate. Reasonable sound quality

Cons: Display panel is not visible on a bright day. It could you a "loudness" button to boost the sound. USB port is hard to find in the dark - It's not lit and the port cover is very flimsy

    it can fit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an excellent choice for any car. My 1973 VW Super Beetle had the dash modified for another Blaupunkt, years ago. Many VW's have been modified to fit other radios. This fit right into the previous hole and the sound is great. I'm enjoying the ability to plug in my iPhone and enjoy all of my music.

Pros: sound quality, easy installation, USB and alt input

    Cons: none

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really nice stereo. Looks great in '79 Alfa Spider. Simple design will look good for a long time. Relatively easy install. Sounds great powering 2 Infinity Kappa speakers in kick plate. Hooked to Kenwood 2 channel powering Infinity Kappa on parcel shelf. Sounds great!!!! Menu on stereo is typical European & not really user friendly. Bottom line great quality head unit & excellent value. Highly recommend!!

Pros: Great classic looks w/o tacky lights & styling (most Japanese brands). Adequate power for 2 speakers sounds great with amp.

Cons: Limited instructions & menu isn't user friendly

    Minimalist design looks fantastic

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Blaupunkt Cupertino 220 is a really good looking receiver especially if you are looking to use in a classic car and desire to not distract the look and feel of the automobile. I decided this would be the motivation for purchasing the unit for my classic Mercedes Benz and it not only meet my expectations it actually exceeded them.

Pros: Great minimalist looks, reasonable sound quality, ipod connectivity, usb connectivity, easy installation. Removable faceplate is a great theft deterrent when installed in a convertible vehicle such as mine.

Cons: Wiring improperly labeled by the manufacturer. + and - speaker wires were labeled in reverse fortunately i knew how to properly wire otherwise the outcome may not have been so good. Blaupunkt needs to do something about their quality control department.

Brassy, harsh trebles, muted, muddy bass

Thaddeus from Saint Paul, Minnesota on 6/8/2014

    2000 Volkswagen Beetle
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought the Blaupunkt Cupertino from Crutchfield to put in my commuter Beetle. I started with stock speakers but since uprated those to Pioneer 3 ways in front and Infinity reference speakers in the rear. The deck is good looking, with simple, straight forward controls, installation was easy and professional looking (thanks to Crutchfield), and it didn't even require a wiring harness because I was plugging it into a VW. After living with it 3 weeks, I am underwhelmed by the sound quality. There's a harshness and brassy distortion to the treble that can't be gotten rid of unless you turn the treble down to the point the music sounds dull overall. The bass is muted and lifeless. I'm primarily listening to jazz, acoustic blues, and orchestral music, not kicking out hiphop or rock, so I'm not demanding a ton of bass, but in any event it just isn't there. If I could do it over I'd opt for one of the inexpensive Pioneer decks that have been my mainstay for years.

Pros: Simple installation, elegant look, simple controls

Cons: Sound quality inferior to other low-cost decks; no amount of tweaking sound levels can make this thing really shine. Not the cheapest deck out there, so a real disappointment.

    First Aftermarket Headunit

Austin from New Jersey on 3/23/2014

    2004 Honda Civic SI
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the first aftermarket headunit I have installed and so far I am very impressed. This head unit brought out the quality of my stock speakers and allowed me to use my phone or ipod to play better quality music. The only problem I have had with the new unit is that it does not always read my phone or ipod through the USB cable. It will keep attempting to read it but be unsuccessful. I have found that by unplugging the usb from the unit, and then turning the unit off before turning my car off and then turning the unit on after turning my car on and then plugging the usb in and then my phone/ipod it usually works, but it still isn't guaranteed. If this problem could be worked out with a simple solution this unit would be PERFECT. It has awesome sound quality, a clean simple look, it is easy to use (except when it does not read your device) and an all around great device.

Pros: Clean simple look, great sound quality, easy to use remote, simple to install, charges phone and ipod, when it doesnt read the device you can still use the usb to charge it while using aux for audio.

Cons: Does not always read devices through usb cord, the face is not very bright and can be difficult to see during the day when it is bright outside.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good for VWs no wire harness required, factory harness plugs right into the unit. Good power and pretty good sound, not a lot of adjustments for sound, just bass and treble, no mid setting. Matches dash lights perfect. I have a 2000 passat.

Pros: Matches VW dash lights, good power. Easy install in 2000 passat, took less than 15 min.

Cons: No mid or loudness adjustments

    Decent understated deck

    1986 BMW 325ES
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I didn't want a bunch of crazy disco lights and obnoxious visuals so I chose this deck because of its understated elegant look. It's very streamlined and generally pretty good. I have an 86 BMW so I wanted to stick with German manufacturing and this deck was re commended specifically for my car. That being said the deck doesn't sit perfectly, it's pretty loose and sticks out about an inch further than the stock stereo. The sound is about the same as the stock deck which finally died after 27 years.

    Pros: Elegant, mellow streamlined display

Cons: No Bluetooth & doesn't answer phone calls even when plugged in via USB even though there is an answer phone call button on the remote.

Excellent value and features, good sound

    1972 MG MGB
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We purchased this unit to install in a customer's VW camper van, replacing a broken Pioneer unit. The customer's primary concern was "Will it work with my iPod?" The Cupertino 220 certainly does that, using the factory iPod cable to connect and control the iPod. Sound quality is O.K.; for its price point, I doubt you're going to find anything better. The unit blends well with the early 90's VW dash we put it in, but it would probably look good in most cars. Being Bosch, I expect it to last.

Pros: Value, full feature set, not garish or fiddly-looking.

Cons: Slight learning curve to work all the features.

    Nice Stereo, Nice Price

    2003 Dodge Ram 3500
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation, as always with Crutchfield, was easy and all the parts, as always, were thankfully included. This radio is a quality product you'd expect from Blaupunkt. Not only does it look elegant but it's 'reserved elegance' that screams class instead of tons of lights and goofy displays, it remains totally minimal and cool. The sound is as good as the speakers in your vehicle. I can say this unit sounds 1000x better than the factory installed stereo in my Dodge 3500 even with the factory speakers. The radio signal reception is extraordinary. The CD player is great. Face it, this is a great stereo, especially for the price. Get one.

Pros: Great look, great sound, detachable face, remote control, easy to install, solid quality.

Cons: Because it's a Blaupunkt you expect lots of quality stuff. You get it. Only there are so many features it takes awhile to comprehend all of them. SUGGESTION: Do NOT try and 'learn' this unit while driving. Mess with it in the safety of your garage or driveway until you can utilize all the features without thinking about it instead of the road. Us other drivers thank you for that.
