Our take on the Farenheit TID-831NRB

Put a big screen in your single-DIN dash opening — Farenheit's TID-831NRB DVD receiver features a motorized 8.3" monitor that powers out at the touch of a button. You can enjoy DVDs up front while you're parked, on a screen that has a viewing area nearly 40% bigger than the 7" screens found on other receivers.

Check out Ken Nail's video blog: The Big Screen comes to the dashboard.

Clever design
Tap the "open" button on the front, and the TID-831NRB's face motors out, rotates 90 degrees toward the driver, and then flips up. The front control knobs are now on the driver's side — one lets you adjust the volume, while the other lets you tilt the screen for the best viewing angle.

Play your digital music and movies
Load up an SD™ card — up to 16GB — with your MP3 music files or DivX movie files. You'll have plenty of tunes for your next road trip, and you can connect an optional rear monitor so your passengers can watch movies while you drive. You can also hook up your iPod with an optional cable (available soon), and use the massive touchscreen to browse your music library.

Built-in Bluetooth®, too
Talk hands free with your compatible phone — when a call comes in, simply tap the screen to answer. You can hear your caller over your speakers, and keep your eyes on the road. You can also stream music from a Bluetooth-enabled device.

Adding on
Add Farenheit's optional digital TV tuner, and you'll become the master of the tailgate party as you pull in local TV stations. Three sets of preamp outputs let you add amps and subs — you can activate a low-pass filter on the subwoofer output that adjusts the bass going to your sub. Add GPS with an optional module, and enjoy fingertip access to maps on the TID-831NRB's big touchscreen.

Bluetooth note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

From the review Farenheit TID-831NRB DVD receiver: the Big Screen comes to the dashboard
"We get to see some pretty cool gear come through the door at Crutchfield, but the Farenheit TID-831NRB really turned some heads. Most in-dash DVD receivers with retractable screens have a 7-inch screen, but Farenheit has broken through with a model that packs an 8.3-inch screen inside the chassis of the receiver... clever engineering and space management is the key."

    Brought it love it

    Drew from CT on 9/25/2011

Sync is great with android contacts dial pad etc. Mp3 works great plays all songs mp4 plays all movies takes 2-3 min. to play Sound is great and radio and disks are flawless touch screen works good and has good res. not HD Backup camera is the best. Since I had to run the cable to the front I ran every wire up front. Camera is on with ignition and the orange trigger wire gets power from the reverse lights and power via switch. So it goes on when I put the car in reverse and when I hit the switch it will remain on if I want.

    great concept; poor

Juli from Myrtle Beach, SC on 3/10/2011

well, the big screen is awesome, and that's where awesome ends and so-so begins. The on screen buttons are very slow to respond. The ipod interface is awful: for playing music you can use the remote or onscreen buttons; for video you must use the ipod controls on the ipod, so you can't just hide it away in your glove box. It did fit in my Durango though, which was amazing. All in all, good concept, but the software is awful. I think they concentrated on the big screen size and ignored the software and functionality of the unit itsself. Crutchfield gladly accepted this unit back and I got a Pioneer 5200 which is, by far, much superior to the farenheit in all aspects. So if you want a big screen for looks get this unit; if you want a functional, working unit buy anything else.

    Great hardware, Awful Software

Kevin M from Lihue, HI on 10/12/2010

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great hardware, very solid. All functions I used worked. Sent the unit back because of the software. The user interface is clumsy and archaic. 1)SD card file folders and files are listed by their 8-character DOS names. (eg CLASSI~1or SOMEWH~1.mp3) 2)Every power up, entire contents of SD card must be read before anything from SD cardcan be played (minute or so, 4GB card). 3)The unit starts with first mp3 file on SD card every time. 4)The touch screen menus/controls required to get to any desired mp3 file (or video or picture) on the SD card are clunky. This is not something you want to do while driving. 5)When selecting input with screen retracted, you must go through all potential inputs (with delay) including those with nothing connected. 6)Couldn't answer Bluetooth connected phone from unit with screen retracted. 7)With iPod connected, song selection is very difficult, highlighted text cursor moves around with overlaid arrow icons like SD selection. 8)Overlaid arrows cover half the screen and obstruct the highlighted text you're trying to change. Frustrating. 9)Playing a movie from SD took > five minutes to start. 10)Using the |<< key twice to return to previous track caused unit to output white noiseover the speakers. 11)No information from Bluetooth connected phone presented on display. Phone wouldindicate callers name/number on phone display, yet Farenheit display would say "unknown caller...". No access to phones address book. Frustrating!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, the screen is big, and it's the coolest thing to see it open and close! The sound is in my opinion a step up from my Alpine. Maybe it's the crossover for the sub? I can hear parts in songs I never heard before in my car. Next, so far the bluetooth hands free has worked with my iphone 3gs flawlessly. Now for the negatives. As I feared, the screen touches the shifter in my Honda Odyssey and it can only open and close while I'm in park. One minor but annoying thing is whenever the sun hits the unit, it thinks I'm loading a cd and the motor whines. As soon as I block it with my hand, the motor stops. It doesn't seem to interfere with the operation of the unit but the sound from the motor is loud, and it keeps going for as long as the sun is on the sensor. My polarized sunglasses makes the screen look blank. The volume dial, which feels a bit loose, affects the volume differently with each turn. Another minor thing I noticed is that the screen closes whenever you start the car. Next and biggest minus for me, ipod control (adapter sold separately) sometimes freezes up, doesn't play, or stops playing. When that happens, all I can do is unplug it and plug it in again and hope it works. It's happened with 2 different generation nanos, an ipod touch, and my iphone. I know this is a long review but I hope it will be helpful. The sound is great, the screen is cool, but if you want to use your ipod you might be disappointed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased this unit for my 07 Subaru Impreza Wrx. The unit worked as planned, although the picture seemed a little grainier than I had expected. The only real issue is that the unit didn't clear the dash trim in my car. When the unit would slide out and rotate clockwise it would hit the factory trim. Thanks to the great customer service at Crutchfield I was able to trade the unit for one that fit without any issue.

Excellent entry level trade up for the factory system in my 2010 Camar

Erick from Germantown, MD on 8/21/2010

This unit combined with the 2010 headunit adapter (also bought from Crutchfield) and a pair of 10" Kenwood Typhoon subs powered by my 400W (2ohm wired in series) is a HUGH leap up from the factory system (the included 80W amp is surprisingly powerful with alot of punch), and the 8" screen is sharp and crisp during DVD playback. I took some images to upload, but didnt find anywhere to do so before posting this. If you are on a limited budget and want to get out of the limited factory system, this unit is definatly the way to go! The only drawbacks I have seen so far are: 1. With the screen unextended, I cant get the time to come up on the display, 2, The sub out is mono, not stereo, and 3, The add on navigational unit is close to impossible to find new (ebay has a ton listed but they are all factory refurbs). those limitations aside, this unit ROCKS!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is everything I wanted and then some. Big 8.3" screen, excellent sound and stunning picture in dvd mode. I believe that it even made the current aftermarket speakers in my car sound better. I had read one review that the Iphone with os 4.0 would not work with this unit. This is NOT true. Not only does it work, but the sound is crystal clear even with the motor running, no interference at all. Touch screen is very easy to set up and reacts as expected. As always,, Crutchfield sends everything needed to get the unit installed and running. Great package and excellent price for what this unit gives you.

    Display Features

Motorized 8.3" Touch Panel: The Farenheit TID-831NRB has a motorized, retractable 8.3" TFT LCD wide screen display with touch panel controls and LED backlighting. The display provides a video monitor for watching DVDs (when parked). The screen has a resolution of 800 x 480 and 384,000 total pixels.

Display Angles: You can adjust the display to one of three angles for best visibility. After the viewing angle has been set, the unit will return the display to that angle each time it's opened.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent displaying video while the vehicle is in motion, the pink wire in the supplied harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

    Audio Section

Audio Settings: The Farenheit TID-831NRB offers the following audio adjustments:

    • Preset EQ: Pop, Classic, Rock, Jazz, and User
    • Bass and Treble: bass and treble are independently adjustable in the EQ User mode (+/- 9)
    • X-Bass: on/off; emphasizes low frequencies
    • Loudness: on/off; compensates for low volume by increasing low and high tones

5-Channel Preamp Output: The included external amplifier is connected to the TID-831NRB's front and rear preamp outputs using the included RCA patch cord, or a more powerful amp can be added if you prefer. There is also a single subwoofer preamp output; the subwoofer output level can be adjusted relative to the main volume. The subwoofer crossover point is adjustable; choose 80Hz, 120Hz, or 160Hz.

    Tuner Functions

    AM/FM Tuner: The Farenheit TID-831NRB is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner.

Tuner Features: The TID-831NRB offers seek, manual tuning, and 18 FM and 12 AM presets (6 in each band, FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2).

    Disc/SD-card Playback

Disc Compatibility: The TID-831NRB can play back the following types of discs (including VCD, MP3, MP4, and DivX):

    • CD: CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW
    • DVD: DVD-Video, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW

Parental Lock: Like home DVD players, you can set password protected viewing restrictions. There are 8 levels of parental lock protected by a 4-digit password.

Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30° of horizontal. A second Euro-DIN mounting sleeve is included that extends the unit approximately 1" from the dash, reducing the required mounting depth. The mounting dimensions using the extension sleeve are:

    • Mounting Depth: 5.837"
    • Nose Depth: 2.776"

SD Card: The front panel slot will accept SD Cards up to 16 GB and play MP3, MP4, DivX, and Xvid files.

    USB/iPod Connectivity

USB Port: The head unit features a front panel USB mini B port that allows you to connect and play a USB flash drive, up to 16 GB, loaded with MP3 and MP4 files. A USB type A adapter is included.

iPod Compatible: The optional Farenheit IC-2 iPod connector cable (item number 026IC2, sold separately) allows the TID-831NRB to connect to your iPod via a dedicated rear-panel input.

    AV Connections

Front and Rear A/V Inputs: The Farenheit TID-831NRB is equipped with A/V input terminals on the front and rear of the unit to enable connection of external source components. The rear composite video/stereo RCA inputs are ideal for permanent installations, while the front A/V mini-jack (3.5mm) input will come in handy for quick connection of a portable audio/visual source. A mini-jack to RCA adapter is included.

Video Output: A single composite video output allows connection of a rear monitor.

Camera Input: The Camera Input consists of a Composite video RCA jack for connecting an optional rear-view camera. When an optional rearview camera is connected to this unit, the rear view image is displayed on the screen when your vehicle is placed in reverse gear (orange wire of harness must be connected to reverse light wire of vehicle).

Navigation Ready: While compatible, the optional NaviBox required to convert the TID-831NRB into a navigation head unit is not currently available from Crutchfield.

    Bluetooth/Remote Control

Built-In Bluetooth: The TID-831NRB features built-in Bluetooth Technology. Bluetooth wireless technology enables voice and data to be sent via a short distance digital radio link (2.4GHz) up to approximately 33 feet. With Bluetooth built-in, you can wirelessly connect your Bluetooth capable mobile phone to listen to calls through your car's audio system. Bluetooth profile A2DP is also supported for music streaming.

Note: At this time no Bluetooth compatibility list is available for the TID-831NRB, but Farenheit advertizes that most Bluetooth V2.0 enabled phones are compatible.

Wireless Remote Control: In addition to the unit's touch-panel and hard-key controls, the TID-831NRB comes with an infrared (IR) wireless remote control for full function of the multimedia player. The remote is powered by a single CR2025 Lithium 3V battery (included).
