    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love Denon products but this one didn't cut it. I don't know if there was a problem with the unit or if it just didn't do what I expected. Sent it back and got a Yamaha Aventage A730 on the recommendation of my product advisor and she was dead on. It was exactly what I was looking for. Flawless return as always with Crutchfield.

Pros: Crutchfield is awesome when you have a problem.

Poor Build Quality. Failed in less than Two Years

    Eldergeek from Kauai on 5/15/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After having this Denon model for less than two years, the dreaded ( and much reported) HDMI port failure struck. Luckily, there is a repair depot in Honolulu, so the cost of freight out was less than $40, instead of $150 to a west coast repair facility. Overall impression: after having had several AV receivers over the past 15 years, I would be very hesitant to purchase another Denon product. While it seemed a good value at the time, I am regretful that I didn't go with a more reliable brand. I will not make the same error again! My advice: pass on this model, and scan the usual sources ( user groups) if you are considering the purchase of ANY Denon AV product. The installation was on an open shelf, not in an enclosed cabinet, with 6 inches minimum from an other component or object, so trapped heat was never a factor: just shoddy QA on Denon's part.

Pros: Good Value for the money. Feature rich

Cons: Feaures not much good if you must send a 30 pound plus AV receiver for repair. I was told by the depot tech that it may take 6-8 weeks or longer to receive replacement part.

Looks good and sounds good. Very versital. I bought scratch and dent for a big discount, and scratch is barely visible. I have been into audio for decades, but this is my first surround receiver. The setup was not as easy as I had hoped. The on screen menu is not designed to be helpful but it is designed to be flexible.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this DENON AV receiver SEPT 2012. This is my first DENON product. I purchased to access music on my IPOD Touch and to have more options for my HD TV. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase. Hook up fairly straightforward, had to make some different connections since I watch football on TV while listening to music. The internet radio is a big plus. The receiver gets 4 stars because the GUI and the instruction manual are not easy to navigate.

Pros: GREAT sound, lots of features.

    Cons: GUI not intuitive.

This receiver has all the features I was looking for, produces great sound, and the remote does a good job with my sony blu ray player. I upgraded from an older denon that was fine for DVDs, but I wanted to hear what the new blu ray formats sounded like. I noticed a difference with the same set of 5.1 speakers, more presence and better spatial effects.

    Ecellent unit

Paul K from Round Lake Beach, IL on 12/29/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had been looking for a home theater receiver for a few years. My Onkyo integrated amplifier unit right channel was intermittent and need to raise the volume up to get sound again. Plus it did not have any HDMI or component connections. When this Denon unit dropped in price I decided to look closely at it and read customer reviews about it. Unfortunately the unit became sold out and it appeared that I missed out on the deal. About a week past and an "open box" unit was available. I was able to snatch this unit. So far I like the unit. I gave it four stars since the manual is somewhat difficult to follow. It does have a lot of features that will take time to discover and try out. The clarity is much better than my old unit and sufficiently powers my 150 watt Infinity speakers. I was concerned that it would have trouble but that is not the case. I am glad that I got one of these units and would highly recommend it! Also the support from Crutchfield was outstanding once again!

    Pros: Excellent sound. Great clarity

Cons: Manual difficult to follow plus the enclosed manual CD would not operate on my i-Mac.

    Denon AVR-2312CI

Bud Z. from Hebron, Ky on 12/21/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is awsome! This AVR-2312CI is a replacement for a 12 year old Denon AVR-1802 and it was more important to me to have a great receiver for music than for movies. This receiver makes my B&W P5 front speakers and a Polk 10" subwoofer absolutely sing. The sound is so much brighter and clear, with the bass and treble being about as good as it can get. This was the very last unit available and it was an open box which I never normally buy, but Crutchfield assured me it would carry a full warranty and I couldn't beat the price anywhere. It arrived in two days and seemed to be in perfect condition, not having a scratch on I couldn't wait to get it hooked up and it performs amazingly. Crutchfield was great to work with, so when it comes time for a new tv, center channel speaker, blu-ray player and Panamax surge protector Crutchfield will be sure to get my business. Where else can you go and get a great buy, and have it backed up with a very knowledgeable customer service? The big box stores don't even compare.

Pros: Amazing sound for music along with very good 5.1 for movies and tv viewing. Very happy with this purchase and would recommend the Denon AVR-2312CI to anyone. My B&W speakers are a little power hungry and this receiver really delivers, which is one of the reasons I wanted it along with the HDMI inputs and the pure fact that I love Denon. Crutchfield will continue to get my future purchases without question.

Cons: The Denon AVR_2312CI runs hotter than did my AVR-1802 but since I,m going to custom build an entertainment center it will have plenty of ventilation. I thought the setup procedure was a little difficult to get use to and that in some of the procedures they did not tell you what the adjustment does. A manual (hard copy) would be greatly appreciated.

    Great A/V receiver

    DaveP from Toledo,OH on 12/13/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replace a 4 year old Denon AVR-888 because I needed HDMI 1.4a for 3D movies and also extra HDMI inputs, since I finally have a TV that accepts HDMI. This receiver fits my needs perfectly. The on-screen menu system is a lot nicer than my old receiver and this was relatively painless to set up. The network and internet capabilities of this receiver are a nice bonus feature. I can stream my FLAC music files from my network attached storage without problems. Sound quality is great. It's nice to be able to distinguish well-recorded CDs from those that are only average. In short, this receiver does everything I thought it would and then some. I'd buy it again without hesitation.

Pros: Great sound quality, lots of features.

Cons: Internet/network capabilities are still a bit crude, but is saved me from having to use a home theater PC to access my FLAC files.

    Exceeded expectation

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Denon receiver is great, I would highly recommend this for your home theater system. That is not what inspired me to write this review however. Crutchfield far exceeded my expectations. I tend to buy big ticket items from local retailers. My 21 year old son encouraged me to use Crutchfield for their great pricing, but also for their superior customer service. We he was right! Order from Crutchfield and you will not be disappointed!

    Love It!

JulieR from Lewes, DE on 12/9/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my husband's birthday and he's installed it in our main living room, where we have HD TV and surround sound with Bose speakers. The sound quality is amazing. This replaced a 10-year old Onkyo receiver, and the sound clarity is remarkable. We hear background sounds on movies and cable shows that were probably there all the time, but we never heard it before. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who is looking to upgrade their home stereo system and wants great sound without breaking the bank.

Pros: Crystal clear sound through our HD TV and cable system

Cons: Voice Sync with cable has been a real pain to get set up properly. The voices move just a little before you actually hear the sound.

    Outstanding AVR

BillyK from Orlando, FL on 12/8/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was an outstanding bargain and I'm really pleased with the AVR-2312CI. It replaced an old Onkyo TX-SR600 that I was very happy with but the AVR-2312 makes my equally old Polk Audio satellites spring to life in a way the Onkyo never did. In fairness, I think a lot of the perceived improvement is due to the use of the Audessy EQ system. I have non-optimal speaker placement but you wouldn't know it by listening now. I used the Audessy microphone at 6 locations in my den. The results are simply amazing. I'm now running all my HDMI connections (cable box, xbox, ps3 and apple tv) through the receiver instead of the TV and the switching is flawless. Since the AVR has a bi-amp capability I'm saving up for some new front speakers that I can bi-amp. CJ, my advisor, was a great help as well. I am completely satisfied with the product and Crutchfield.

A good quality and sounding receiver that is complicated to set up

Si from Lebanon, NJ on 12/5/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I'm happy with this purchase. I have to admit, it was rather complicated to determine how to set it up at first. I have a set up that includes only a Home Theater PC (HTPC) as the input through HDMI. My speakers include a 5.1 home theater speaker system AND a two speaker system that I want to use exclusively for 2-channel stereo sound, but WITH the same subwoofer from the 5.1 system. Actually, that's just temporary. What I am going to change to soon is leaving the 5.1 in my TV room, and installing two new stereo speakers with a separate dedicated sub in the next room over. Before I bought this, I was trying to figure out how to make this happen, and what complicates things is that only ANALOG sources can be pumped to Zone 2. But since I don't need the first and second room to play simultaneously (just one room or the other), setting this receiver up as a 5.1 system plus 2 Channel is working very well. Once I move everything into the second room, I'll either use the second subwoofer output for the second sub in the second room, or I'll get a cheap RCA switch to turn off the sub in the TV room and turn on the one in the second room. Overall, I give it 4 starts not because of functionality or sound quality, but because the documentation wasn't nearly good enough for me to set it up for my individual needs without a bunch of trial and error. Also, note that the Audessey system only calibrates for the 5.1 system, and NOT for the additional 2 speakers.

Pros: Nice sound quality and volume for both 5.1 sound and 2-channel stereo, lots of features

Cons: Complicated to set up. Inadequate documentation.

    Great Receiver

Wayne from Piney Flats, TN on 12/1/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really good sound but the remote and other controlls very difficult to navigate. Did not have a selection to sync with my projector remote so I have to use two. Other than that I love it. Airplay is a great feature but you have to be hard wireed to the internet for it to work unless you spring for and extra accessory.

    Pros: Great sound, Airplay

    Cons: Difficult to navigate controlls.

exellent feature packed mid-tier receiver at a good price

    PJ from NJ on 12/1/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

needed to replace a 10 year old Denon receiver; wanted HDMI switching and Network connectivty. Saw this receiver. It had HDMI switching and so much more. Got it when the price dropped. Highy recommended. Great quick service from Crutchfield. Came double boxed and well packaged with packing peanuts to protect the receiver in transit

Pros: Will not repeat here all of the features, but it has exactly what one would need and expect from a mid-tier receiver. In fact, it has features one would find in the low end of a top-tier recever. Great price.

Cons: I can't find a reason to justify buying a second one :)

Great sound and great iOS integration

Ron V. from San Jose, CA on 11/25/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Keith and Buck recommended this system after listening to my requirements. I was upgrading from a Marantz AV receiver which I loved but it didn't have HDMI and Airplay support. The sound from the Denon is great after the calibration. The kids enjoy playing the Wii with the "game" sound effects on the Denon and we enjoy the "movie" setting for DVDs as well as the quality of the sound for music which is on a lot. I love the Airplay capability including the ability to wake the Denon up from standby just by selecting the Denon as the output device on the iOS device.

Pros: * Sound quality * Automated sound calibration

    A powerful, cost-effective, full-featured receiver

DoctorG from McCormick, SC on 11/16/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Before purchasing the Denon AVR2312CI as the central control device for my home theater, I had considered a number of receivers and read numerous articles and reviews. Having been an avid and technically advanced audiophile for over 40 years, my tastes leaned toward full-featured receivers and pre-amplifiers. However, these were too expensive, so I sought a more cost-effective alternative, and wanted something in the $600 range or less. Cost was a major consideration. One feature that seemed desirable to me was Audyssey, which the Denon reveivers have. My first inclination was to get the Denon 2113, which was part of a newer series and included support for 4K video. Knowing that I would never get to 4K, and because I have a number of older devices with analog outputs, I decided to get the older 2312. This receiver was higher up in its series, featured more analog inputs, Audyssey MultiEQ XT, and slightly more power than the 2113. Also, Denon now requires dealers to sell their new models at full list price, so the $600 2113 was at the bottom rung of its series, where the 2312 was at a higher tier in its series, and I was getting product that retails for about $900. I am very happy with this receiver. It has all the features I need. Of course, this brings along a certain amount of complexity, and it takes some time to learn the Denon menu system to make adjustments. The remote is not lighted, but that is a minor inconvenience. It's a great receiver!

Pros: Several types of analog inputs (at least 6 sets), 7 HDMI inputs.7 full-range powered channels, plus 2 sub-woofer outputs. (This lets me drive my normal subwoofer as well as one that powers chair vibrators.) My main speakers are custom designed with two complete 3-way systems in each enclosure, so I bi-amp these and use a 5-channel system. There are still line-level outs to Zone 2 which lets me send a separate analog signal to another system for background music elsewhere.

Cons: Non-lighted remote. Speaker banana jacks do not have 3/4-inch spacing so standard dual plugs cannot be used. Product has been discontinued by Denon, so availability is limited.

Denon AVR-2312CI: terrific unit for the price

SteveL from Kern, CA on 11/13/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price paid, definitely a 5-star unit. Easy enough to set up and use, with decently organized user menus. I was not at all satisfied with the speaker sound (all Polk) based on receiver's microphone test and self-adjustment, but speaker sound is excellent after individual speaker adjustments. Does not run hot. Well packaged for shipment - a good thing since UPS looks to have done their best to knock it around in transit, box even had a bootprint on it.

Pros: Full-featured. Many input options. Built-in AirPlay. Individual amp per each channel.

DW from Naperville, IL on 11/12/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was pleased with Crutchfield's service, as the item was well packaged and delivered in two days, as promised. I replaced a ten year old Sony receiver that was beginning to fail. The increase in sound quality was very impressive, even wired to my ten year old Bose Acoustimass Ten Series II speakers. The setup wizard was very useful and in fact the system would be confusing to set up without it. I did run into a few issues with the wizard that may be useful to know about. During speaker calibration it said that all the speakers were wired with reverse polarity. The manual states that some speakers may be incorrectly detected as reversed, so I ignored this error. I also found the on-screen instructions for setup of the remote for the other equipment to be confusing, however the manual had slightly different instructions that worked. After completing the automatic setup, I went back to review the speaker settings. Everything looked good, except it had set my center and surround speakers as small, while Bose says they should be set to big, which I did. So I would recommend reviewing settings after using the wizard to make sure everything makes sense. Also during the setup wizard it said it could not connect to the Internet, however later I was able to select Internet radio and connect without further setup. I had no problems setting up my Harmony One universal remote to operate this receiver.

Pros: 1. Excellent sound quality with more power than I will ever use. 2. Many connection options. 3. Excellent features. 4. The setup wizard is helpful. 5. Works well with Harmony remote. 6. The current price is attractive for a high-quality receiver with so many features.

Cons: 1. The manual supplied with the receiver is on disk. A printed manual is useful if you have any problems or want to dig deep into the settings. You will need a good printer, as it is 150 pages long. 2. You need to be an expert to understand some of the settings, if you go beyond the wizard. More explanation in the manual would be helpful for most of us.

i replaced a 10 yr. old pioneer with the denon2312ci. i am not very tech savvy, the receiver took about 1 hour to set up. just follow on screen directions with the set up wizard. i have it paired with a polk 5.1 speaker system that i bought 7 yrs ago, i can't tell you how much more crisp and powerful the sound is, as well as how much louder. so glad i purchased the 2312, this is the type of receiver i have wanted all my adult life. the air play and internet radio are fantastic. more bells and whistles than you know what to do with, better to have them than not. Crutchfield tech support was great when i needed them. you can't go wrong for the price, this is a receiver that would have cost $2,500 10 yrs. ago.

Pros: set up wizard with the auto speaker calibration, air play- internet radio, plenty of power and fantastic sound, easy set up with other components using hdmi cables.

Cons: wish i would have had this years ago...

This is an amazing receiver. Paired with my polk RTi set-up it sounds amazing. This is the 3rd Denon receiver I have owned over the years and I am not and have never been let down or had any problems. Crystal clear audio at any volume.

Pros: Bi-amping, high power, great quality all around

Cons: need to study the manual to fully set-up and understand, pandora internet radio quality is not up to my standard (I think it was 128kbps, i get better quality through my computer)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great deal on the AVR-2312CI from Crutchfield and fast delivery. My first Denon receiver. The receiver is packed with more features than I know what to do with. The setup was super easy with the auto setup and the included microphone. The setup routine even diagnosed that one of my speakers was wired out of phase. All the HDMI inputs greatly simplified the wiring and I am enjoying the great 7.1 sound. Airplay and internet radio work very well and the standby function on the receiver lets my cable box signal pass thru the receiver to the TV even when the receiver is not on.

Pros: Easy setup. Great sound. Airplay. Internet Radio

Cons: On screen menu takes some getting used to.

The AVR-2312CI delivers clear, crisp sound for TV shows, movies and all types of music. I have always used Onkyo receivers until now. Denon makes a quality products and I'm very happy I switched.

Pros: Great balanced power and clarity across all speakers. The clarity between voices and the mid ranges are incredible compared to my old Onkyo.

Cons: As you might expect there are many options to consider in the setup process. The setup wizard is basic. More effort could be put into a more robust wizard the provides explanations for each option and even provide suggested combinations of options for particular user environments.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

first of all this was a great deal with Crutchfield! I love this receiver. It has replaced my trusty, old, beginner's receiver, a 10 year old Pioneer 5.1 unit. I checked out multiple receivers online and with Crutchfield. This one just seemed to have it all. If you are an i-tunes fan you will love the apple air-play, which lets you stream your itunes from the computer to the receiver, it works very well. This receiver has many, many options and functions, but set up is easy and straight-forward using its setup wizard. You can also make your own custom adjustments, including individual crossover settings for each speaker! The on screen menu is nice and easy to navigate once you get used to it, but is almost overwhelming at first. This is an advanced receiver and it acts the part, but is still easy to use. Shipping was quick. Heads-up, you will need banana plugs when connecting the speakers (other connectors may work, check with Crutchfield) The ethernet connectivity is also cool and mine connected automatically without a username/password. I'm still getting used to everything, like the 150 page manual, but i am very pleased with this unit so far!

Pros: quick and easy to set-up, apple air play great for itunes, good power, nice and loud, great on-screen menus

Cons: only the price (if you pay retail), buy now like i did!

For the price, the Denon AVR-2312CI provides great sound and more features than other similarly priced models from competitors.

Pros: Great sound, lots of features (iPod, 3-D ready, network capable), plenty of HDMI inputs, and relatively simple install/setup.

have to read full in details owners manual to understand the functions and how to activate them.this equipment need that you have been familiar with receivers world to understand it. once set up after 1 hour, first thing noted was the sound quality, very detailed and clean.the internet feature is very cool and the tuner very powerful. I paired to klipsch RF7 speakers and the MARANTZ CD CC4003 no doubt this receiver will do the job very well in both stereo and movie.since i am from the 80's , my main pattern is music rather than movies and this receiver from my judgement is better choice for movies than music. suggest if possible give it a try at the dealer store before ordering and make your conclusions based in your preferences.

    Pros: well build,sound,features & look.

Cons: wish it had : turntable inputs, loudness switch, tape monitor inputs and sound meters displays.

I got ahold of a very capable person in less than a minute and he got everything resolved. Crutchfield is the only place that I buy my electronics.

Pros: Very good value for its level of performance.

First Receiver in a long time, Denon was easy to set up and the sound to awesome. Apple Air play is nice, after doing the firmware update airplay did not show up in the options to select. Found out you had to a complete reset of receiver, then everything worked. Many options to play with, very satisfied so far.

I had a Denon receiver many years ago that worked flawlessly this product is no different. The build quality is second to none. The sound is superb, my Klips come alive, and internet radio works great. The feature to restore or un-compress MP3s works great it comes close to the warm sound of vinyl. Glad I bought it.

Pros: Easy to set up, sounds great and of course you always have Crutchfield as a back up!

Cons: Inputs for a turntable would be nice.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced an old Pioneer from my college days with this. I finally have a REAL receiver. I've had the Denon for about 3 weeks. This thing has plenty of power, and tons of cool features. The networking and internet radio features are cool. This receiver sounds nice with TV and movies. Sadly, I think I'm one of the few people that would prefer a stereo receiver, but the options are very limited for stereo receivers. I spend a lot of time listening to music, and it appears to be impossible to customize the EQ. I've only been able to select from the preset EQ's - of which there is only one in stereo. This frustrates me. In the end - it will play music much louder and more powerfully than the old Pioneer - so, I'm happy! One more frustration... it keeps trying to update "firmware", and it freezes EVERY time. Ultimately - I'd recommend.

Pros: Power. Nice features. Easy to set up. Plenty of HDMI's.

Cons: Lack of EQ adjustability. Firmware updates that keep freezing. Electronic manual... what is this world coming to?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

One of the reasons I got this was to be able to stream from my iPhone/iPad. Disappointed that I am only able to stream audio and not video. I misinterpreted the data sheets. The product literature claims support for "streaming music". I may end up buying an AppleTV receiver eventually. Like the Denon APP for my mobile devices. I would rate the app at a 3.

    Pros: Easy to setup.

Cons: One thing I do not like is that if I turn on/off my TV while it is receiving HDMI from my BluRay player ( through this receiver), the playing (audio) stops and resumes. It can by annoying. The UI is a little tedious to get to a specific Video service if it is way down in the list of video services.

This receiver is incredible! After a talk with a crutchfield advisor, we decided that this was the best deal for the money. I thought my old receiver was good but once i got everything set up (took maybe 20 minutes) this thing blew my mind. Do not believe anyone who says this is impossible to set up, the on screen guide makes it so anyone who can read will be able to set this up. It guides you through every step of the way to make sure everything works perfectly.

Pros: Beautiful sound and picture. Very snappy input changes that makes switching sources effortless and fast

Cons: Only con is that AirPlay does not support video, it only does audio.

This seems to be a very nice receiver I have only had it set up now for a week still in the learning process. Picture quality seems to be the best i've seen from a receiver to date. It does take some time to set up.

Pros: Good quality picture while using my tv and blu ray.Sound is good but cant tell the difference from my old receiver. I do feel Crutchfield is one of the best electronics stores that give you top notch tech. support. This is one of the main reasons I purchased from them. Very customer oriented. Priced right

Cons: Just come with a quick set up manual. Comes with a full manual on cd rom. I am more of a manual in hand guy while setting up and using a unit. The onscreen display is nice.

    Great product.

Great product for the Price. Plenty of power for my monitor 50s and 30s. Using Dolby IIz 7.1 to fill my giant basement up with sound 24x30. People will try to say my set up could be bigger but i say come listen at -15 db, fantastic! I have everything hooked up to this bad boy including playstation, Satellite TV, even component video for my Wii which gets up converted. Reciever did run hot for first couple of hours but problem was resolved by firmware update.

Pros: Lots of power. Lots of setup and surround options. Connectivity is a breeze.

Cons: Can get lost in layers of menu

I've had the reciever almost two weeks. I have been very happy with it so far. The only complaint I have is that if I don't do a proper power on sequence with receiver, DVR, TV then I get a flashing screen with no picture. Not sure if it is a configuration issue or just a sequence thing. But other then that I have been very impressed. I love the on screen menu. Never have had that before.

Pros: Good sound, Love the network interface and airplay.

Cons: Flashing screen on TV with no picture if not powered on correctly

I have two KF-26 for front speakers, RW12D, and Ref center and surrounds, previously hooked to Pioneer vsx821k, All i can say is wow. Clarity is improved dramatically, There also is much more power behind the sound with out killing your ears on the highs. I can't express enough how big of a difference this made to the movie/music experience. The net app froze the first time i used it, Upgraded the firmware and now it works flawlessly. Remote app works great and haven't had an issue with it. Setup is super simple and intuitive. OSD can be turned off so it doesn't interrupt movies when changing parameters. display shows incoming encoding and how its being decoded so there is now question if your mode is correct, no HDMI signal drop ( pioneer had an issue with this) for the price this thing can't be touched. Allows full range to your towers while still utilizing the sub, I have not found anything that is does wrong or not well, as a previous AV installer I would highly recommend this product, again for the price, even a couple hundred more this is your best bet.

    Pros: everything

Cons: none really, Remote is kind of ugly

The Denon AVR 2312CI is a good choice for a home theater receiver, especially at the new lower list price. I've looked briefly at the updated model 2313CI and don't see a reason to go with that unit and pay $300 more.

Pros: Set up is a breeze. System updates are easy to apply. The sound is quite nice.

Cons: The Denon Ipad app is so so. The third party created app entitled DeRemote is the one to get. It costs $7.99. Denon should acquire this app and scrap their current app.

After my older 3310CI got fried by lightning I started looking for a new receiver. I found the 2312Ci by the recommendation of a person on AVS forums. I delved into the specs and found it fit what I was looking for. My only concern was the lower amp rating vs the 3310 I had. The different is negligible for my setup and the 2312 may sound a little better due to the upgraded Audacity setup from the 3310. I got a great deal on an open box buy. I would by this receiver again.

Pros: Audacity XT, Networking built in, 7.1 or 5.1 + 2nd room, supports 3D, Tons of HDMI inputs

Cons: Doesn't have wireless networking, limited optical inputs

After shopping around for the right receiver I finally decided on this one. Heard it side by side with an Onkyo at a local retailer but this one brought out the natural sound and harmonics in my B&W speakers with better clarity even without tuning. After connecting it at home with my speaker setup I was blown away. I have heard more expensive receivers struggle with sonic detail in speakers at lower volumes but this one is clearly audiophile quality. Don't let the price fool you. The Airplay feature is a big plus if you tap into that source either directly from your iPhone or iPad. I recommend bi-amping if you're willing to stay on 5.2 channel surround. Especially if you have high end, power hungry speakers. Crutchfield and Denon customer forever. Thanks.

Pros: Easy to set up, easy to calibrate easy to tweak. Stereo mode for music absolutely rocks!

    Cons: None

Excellent piece of equipment. Packaged very well for delivery. Lots of setup options and inputs. This unit can handle 9.1. Worked great with my iPod touch. Connect iPod via USB port on the front. Playlist were shown on the screen, and I was able to control playlist selection and starting song using the remote control. Sound is great. Nice speaker configuration tool. Came with a small microphone on a long wire for calibrating speaker configuration. Would recommend this unit to others.

Pros: Extensive menus for setting up audio speakers, HTML connections. Has pass-thru for video.

Cons: Prefer a paper manual versus an electronic one (PDF), but that's just me. Options can be a bit much, but I'd rather have more options than less.

    great AVR with some bugs

AVR sound great! had in old modle number 1610 but needed more power for my B&W speakers. takes a little learning curve to get used to the GUI but works well.I had lots of issues with network connection tell I reduced cable length now works great. Denon web site says it has Phono input this model doesn't the next model 3312 has it if you want to usa a phono just connect to any rca input and buy a phono Preamp. called Denon on firmware update and said the server is in Japan and recommended only doing it at night. a very poor idea to have a server in japan if firmware update failes to many times it may crash the AVR. in my opinon don't do a update unless you have issues with the AVR

Pros: easy to use,GUI works great, video IP scaler, ability to use local web address set to set up system ..... love Pandora, plays FLAC,AAC,WMA,airplay

Cons: constant connection drops. (fixed by reducing ethernet cable length) very poor firmware update reliability.

I bought the 2312 about one month ago. The set up was a bit challenging using the online manual, but ultimately easier than the Onkyo it replaced. The set up microphone worked flawlessly, and the system is delivering impressive sound--much better than the 6-year old Onkoy I had. I like it so much I've ordered another for our family room. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been using a Denon receiver that was over 20 years old that still works, but is out of date with the new Home Theater technology. I decided to update it with a newer Denon receiver so I could enjoy some of the newer updates. I researched different receivers and sellers on the internet and based on my experience with Denon that was the brand I wanted to go with. I checked features and prices and I decided to go with the Denon AVR-2312CI and I couldn't be happier with my new receiver. The sound is so much cleaner and i'm now hearing things that just weren't there before with the same speakers. This unit has an automatic system to set the levels of my speakers and that was a big plus for me since my old unit had to be set manually and I had to guess about how to set the speakers with it. I can't say enough good things about this receiver. My components are set up with HDMI cables and it makes it so easy and uncluttered. There were many units priced less than the unit I bought, but i'm so glad I chose this one. I had a couple of questions about my set up and the Crutchfield advisors were there to help me. I couldn't be happier with my purchase from Crutchfield and the new Denon AVR-2312CI receiver.

    Audio Features

High-Quality Construction: The Denon AVR-2312CI offers a minimum signal path design and direct mechanical ground construction, with independent power supplies for high-quality, audiophile-type sound.

    • Minimum Signal Path Design: The simple & straight design concept has been thoroughly implemented in the signal paths to contribute to clean audio and video playback. Signal paths are as short as possible to keep signal degradation in the audio and video circuitry to a minimum.
    • Direct Mechanical Ground Construction: Vibration-resistant construction has been used to suppress the adverse influences of vibration on sound quality. The power transformers, a source of vibration, have been securely mounted on the high rigid bottom chassis. Direct mounting of cast-iron feet to the radiator in near proximity to each other serves to suppress mutual vibration with the power transformers and other sources of vibration.
    • Independent Power Supplies: The Denon AVR-2312CI employs independent stable power supplies for high-quality sound and picture playback.
    • Vibration-Resistant Construction: The vibration-resistant construction thoroughly suppresses the adverse influences of vibration on sound quality, ensuring maximum audio performance.

Equal Power Amp Design: The Denon AVR-2312CI is equipped with a 7 channel power amplifier rated at 105-watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.08% THD, driving 2 channels) that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction. To faithfully reproduce the original surround sound, each of the Denon AVR-2312CI's seven channels are equipped with its own high-current power amp of equal power. Since these power amps also use discrete circuits configured with parts strictly selected for their contribution to high sound quality, rather than with low-cost integrated circuits (ICs), the surround sound playback is of impeccably high quality.

Amplifier Assignment: The AVR-2312CI supports up to 7.2 channels (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Dual SW) for surround playback defined by the Blu-ray disc format. The seven amplifier channels built into the receiver are typically used for 7.2 channel surround in the main room, but there are various amplifier configurations to accommodate your home theater setup:

    • Normal: The AVR-2312CI is designed to be used as a 7.2ch surround sound receiver with front left/right, center-channel, surround left/right, and surround back left/right channels along with a preamp subwoofer output.
    • Bi-Amp: You can configure the amplifier for front bi-amp operation to achieve a higher-quality 2-channel sound by connecting the receiver's front and surround back channels to your main front speakers (if compatible). Receiver will be limited to 5.2ch surround.
    • Front B: A second set of front speakers can be powered by the surround back amplifier. Receiver will be limited to 5.2ch surround.
    • Front Height: To enjoy Dolby Pro Logic IIz you can reassign the power amp from the two surround back channels to the two front height channels for better front effects.
    • Zone2: The surround back channel amplifier can also be assigned to power stereo speakers in Zone2. Receiver will be limited to 5.2ch surround.

Dual Subwoofer Outputs: An additional subwoofer output proves especially useful in large room settings where one subwoofer may not provide adequate low-frequency output.

Dual 24-bit/192-kHz DACs: This receiver is equipped with dual AKM Semiconductor 24-bit/192-kHz (AK4358VQ) DACs per channel to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and  clearer sound.

32-Bit Processing DSP: The Denon AVR-2312CI is equipped with a Floating-Point 32-bit DSP (ADSP21487) for powerful and highly accurate surround sound reproduction.

High-Definition Audio Support: Fully compatible with current HD audio formats, the Denon AVR-2312CI A/V Receiver provides powerful, theater-quality surround sound. The Denon AVR-2312CI features support for Blu-ray high-resolution audio formats, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio for a dynamic surround-sound listening experience. These formats play back sound with exceptional fidelity, providing a more realistic listening experience.

Surround Formats: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. The unit can be set to store the most recently selected surround mode for each input, so it is automatically activated each time the particular input is chosen. The surround modes include:

    Listening Modes Description
Stereo This is the mode for playing in 2-channel stereo; bass and treble can be adjusted and sound is output from the front left and right speakers, along with a connected subwoofer.
Direct In this mode the audio signal is played in its original form, without any surround or tone processing.
Pure Direct Like in Direct Mode, the audio signal is played in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. The display and analog video circuitry are also turned off to minimize the possibility of any noise being added to the signal.
Dolby Pro Logic Modes Dolby Pro Logic Dolby Pro Logic is a matrix decoding technology developed by Dolby Laboratories. Dolby Pro Logic processes any high-quality stereo (two-channel) movie and music audio into four playback channels of surround sound - Front Left, Front Right, Center, Mono-Surrounds.
    Dolby Pro Logic II

Dolby Pro Logic II is a matrix decoding technology developed by Dolby Laboratories. Regular music such as that on CDs is encoded into 5 channels to achieve an excellent surround effect. The surround channel signals are converted into stereo and full band signals (with a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz or greater) to create a "three-dimensional" sound image offering a rich sense of presence for all stereo. sources

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
      • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
      • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
      • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Denon Original Surround Mode Settings: While listening in one of the Denon Original Surround Modes, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
      • Room Size: This feature allows you to set the size of your desired acoustic environment when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes; select Small, Medium small, Medium, Medium large, or Large.
      • Effect Level: This function adjusts the effect signal level from 1 to 15 when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes.
      • Delay Time: This feature adjusts the delay time (0-300ms) to control the sound stage size
    • Height Gain: Adjust the volume (Low/Mid/High) of the Front Height channels in Dolby Pro Logic IIz.

Audyssey MultEQ XT: Audyssey MultEQ XT technology helps create an optimal acoustic profile for your home theater. Using the included setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ XT measures sound levels and adjusts speaker configuration accordingly, making setup fast and easy. This room acoustic measuring and correction system analyzes (via the included microphone) the audio characteristics of your speaker system and your listening environment at up to 8 measurement points and automatically tailors the sound for top audio fidelity. You can set the Audyssey MultEQ XT to one of the following modes.

    • Audyssey: Optimizes the crossover point, output level, delay time, and equalization of all speakers based on speaker frequency response, speaker location, and room acoustics.
    • Audyssey Bypass L/R: Optimizes all speakers except front left and right.
    • Audyssey Flat: Optimizes frequency response of all speakers to flat.
    • Manual: Adjusts the tonal quality for each speaker individually using the manual equalizer settings; adjust from -20 to +6 dB at 63 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz.
    • Off: Turns equalizer off.

Note: You can also setup your speaker system manually using the receiver. You can select speaker configuration and size (large/small/none), as well as subwoofer (yes/no). Set subwoofer and LFE signal range playback (LFE/LFE+Main), as well as low-pass crossover frequency (80/90/100/110/120/150/200/250Hz). Set distance (0-60') from listening position to speakers. Set the volume (+/-12dB) of the test tone to be the same when it is output from each speaker. And set the high-pass crossover frequency (40/60/80/90/100/110/120/150/200/250Hz) for each speaker.

Dynamic EQ: Audio engineers mix music and movie soundtracks at reference levels much louder than typical home listening levels. At lower volumes the human ear perceives sound differently; voices change, bass dissipates, and the surround effect becomes less enveloping. Dynamic EQ adjusts the frequency response curve based on volume to maintain consistent bass output, octave-to-octave balance, and surround impact, resulting in rich sound at any volume. You can set the Dynamic EQ to 0, 5, 10, or 15 dB.

Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume addresses the issue of commercials that are too loud and movie soundtracks with vast differences between soft and loud passages; the results are more intelligible dialogue, loud passages maintain impact, and soft whispers are heard clearly. When the volume level changes, Dynamic EQ also adjusts the frequency response to maintain sound quality. You can set the Dynamic Volume to Day (low), Evening (middle), Midnight (high), or off.

CINEMA EQ (Cinema Equalizer): The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic (including PL II, PL IIx, PL IIz), and DTS Neo:6 modes.

Restorer: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The Restorer function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals. You can choose from 4 settings:

    • Mode 1 (Restorer 64): Optimized mode for compressed sources with very weak highs.
    • Mode 2 (Restorer 96): Apply suitable bass & treble boost for all compressed sources.
    • Mode 3 (Restored HQ): Optimized mode for compressed sources with normal highs.
    • Off: Does not use Restored function.

Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.

Tone Settings: You can independently adjust the system's overall Bass and Treble settings from -6 to +6 dB. You can also fade the sound from front to rear or vice-versa.

Bi-Amping Front Speakers: The Surround-Back speaker terminals can be reassigned and used along with the Front terminals to bi-amp the front speakers, providing improved bass and treble performance. When bi-amping the front speakers the receiver is limited to a 5.2ch speaker system in the main room.

Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.

Volume Setting: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output. You can also specify a turn-on volume, from -80 to +18dB or Last (whatever the volume setting when the receiver was turned off).

Muting Level Adjustment: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Assignable Digital Inputs: The AVR-2312CI features two optical digital (Toslink) inputs and two coaxial digital inputs. Each input can be assigned to any of the different input sources except Tuner.

Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding post terminals for all speaker outputs (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Surround Back L/R). The binding posts can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and single banana plugs. The terminals are spaced too far apart for dual banana plugs. The collar surrounding the binding post terminals prevent the use of spade connectors.

Note: The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 6 to 16-ohm.

Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

AM/FM Tuner: The Denon AV receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with 56 station auto-preset memory tuning. You can also set your presets manually. You can even label these presets. In addition, you can even directly tune in a frequency using the receiver's remote control.

    Video Features

HDMI (v1.4): With seven HDMI ver.1.4 inputs (6 rear/1 front), the AVR-2312CI allows you to route multiple high-definition devices--like game consoles and Blu-ray players--to your TV. It also allows you to connect all of your devices to your TV with a single HDMI cable (via its HDMI monitor output), reducing cable clutter. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. They support HDCP copyright protection and are compatible with 3D signals, ARC, Deep Color, xvYCC technology, Auto LipSync, and HDMI control.

Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features 4 composite video inputs (3 rear/1 front) and one composite video monitor output. There are also two component video inputs and a component video output (60MHz). In addition, there are two S-video inputs (DVR/Dock-Connector). The composite and S-video inputs can be output via composite or HDMI. The component video input can only be output via component or HDMI.

Analog-to-HDMI Conversion with Video Scaling (1080p): The AVR-2312CI is equipped with a flexible video switching system that converts incoming analog video signals to HDMI, so only one video connection is required from the receiver to the TV. The 480i/480p (SD-quality), 720p, and 1080i video signals input as component, composite, or S-video can be converted to HDMI and scaled as high as 1080p resolution (output resolution set in the menu).

NSV (Noise Shaped Video): The NSV precision video feature works in the digital domain to reduce noise in the video signal frequency band in order to enhance video signal linearity, provide the most accurate signal representation, and enhance the picture quality. Noise shaping techniques can be combined with dynamic element matching techniques in order to reduce the matching requirements of DAC elements by converting the analog mismatch into out of band noise. This approach of dynamic element matching and noise shaping has been shown to allow the use of sigma delta modulation at video data rates. NSV is the only product on the market that can achieve ultimate precision with 12-bit fidelity in both digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital domains.

3D Pass-Through: With the advent of 3D media, it is important to own a receiver that recognizes 3D video signals. The AVR-2312CI is able to pass through 3D signals from your Blu-ray player, ensuring that the 3D effect doesn't get lost in translation. It also recognizes signals from 3D television broadcasts. By connecting a 3D-compliant Blu-ray disc player and 3D-compliant TV to the AVR-2312CI, you will have a 3D home theater where you can enjoy high-definition sound and video on a level you've never experienced before.

HDMI Standby-Through: When enabling the HDMI Standby-Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 2 HDMI Through functions modes.

    • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input (1-7) for which the HDMI Standby-Through function is enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "standby" mode.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Deep Color & x.v.Color Support: The AVR-2312CI also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture

Auto LipSync: This feature automatically compensates for the timing shift between the audio and video of the receiver. If needed, the audio signal can be manually delayed to match the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms.

Video Select Function: You can switch the video input source on the receiver while listening to a different audio signal.

Video Mode: You can select between 3 video processing settings.

    • Auto: Processes video automatically based on the HDMI content information.

Personal Memory Plus: For each input, the receiver automatically memorizes the settings for input mode, surround mode, HDMI output mode, MultEQ, Dynamic EQ, Dynamic Volume, audio delay, etc. When the input source is switched, the settings last used for that source are automatically recalled. The surround parameters, tone control settings, and playback levels for the different output channels are memorized for each surround mode.

Protection Circuit: This is a function to prevent damage to components within the power supply when an abnormality such as an overload, excess voltage, or over-heating occurs. In this unit, the power indicator blinks and the unit enters standby mode when an abnormality occurs.

    Remote Control

Multibrand Remote Control: The AVR-2312CI comes with an IR wireless remote control that can operate the receiver as well as other remote control capable components. It is pre-programmed with control signals for other brand products; including DVD players, Blu-ray Disc players, VCRs, TVs, cable boxes, satellite receivers, and CD players. The remote control features Glow keys so it can easily be used in the dark.

Quick Select: The front panel and main remote both have four Quick Select buttons. Each button can be programmed with a specific input source, surround mode, and volume setting for easy recall.

HDMI Control: The Denon AVR-2312CI can control select external audio/video components connected via HDMI which support HDMI control. When you make an HDMI connection with a TV or player compatible with the AVR-2312CI's HDMI control function, you can perform the operations from the AVR-2312CI's remote control - Power off, Switching of audio output devices, Switching of audio input devices, Volume adjustment, and Playback functions.

Custom Integration: The AVR-2312CI carries the CI stamp, which is Denon's certification to custom installers that the receiver has advanced connectivity and control features often required for custom home integration and theater applications using premium control systems. These features include a RS232C jack for use with whole house control systems, remote in/out IR command control, and 12-volt trigger output.

    • RS-232C Port: The AVR-2312CI includes an RS-232C port for connection to external whole-house control systems, from companies such as AMX and Crestron.
    • Remote Jacks: The receiver has a mini-jack input and output for use with other compatible Denon components or an external IR repeater.
    • 12V Trigger Output: The AVR-2312CI has one minijack output to send a 12-Volt DC turn-on signal to another component that accepts a 12V trigger, such as a power amplifier. The conditions under which each trigger output activates is programmable.

iPhone App Control (Denon Remote App): The Denon Remote App lets you control the Denon Network A/V receiver using your iPhone or iPod Touch (requires iOS 4.2 or later). Four separate screen modes provide access to everything from audio tuning to the networking and switching capabilities of  the Denon receiver. For instance, one iPhone App screen lets you control your Denon receiver's basic functions, including power on/off, volume, input selection, surround sound modes, etc. Other screens let you delve deeper into the many features and capabilities of your Denon A/V receiver; from choosing multi-zone networking to content-streaming to tuner commands, radio station pre-sets, balancing the audio soundfield for specific room parameters, and more.

Note: Download the "Denon Remote App" from the iTunes App Store for FREE. The AV receiver needs to be connected to a LAN and the iPhone/iPod touch needs to be connected to the same network by Wi-Fi (wireless LAN).
