Bluetooth invites your smartphone to the party

If most of your music lives on a smartphone or tablet, you might be wondering how to play those tunes in your home theater. With the AVR-S500BT, it doesn't get easier. It has built-in Bluetooth, so you can wirelessly stream all your digital tunes from virtually any smartphone or tablet, as well as many computers. Pair your device with this receiver, and you can play music stored or your device or streamed from apps like Pandora® Internet radio. There's also a front-panel USB port, so you can plug in USB memory devices loaded with digital music files. The 'S500BT can play high-resolution FLAC files to enjoy better-than-CD sound. Or if you're playing MP3s, Denon's Compressed Audio Restorer can make those lossy files sound richer and fuller.

Set up 3 speakers so far. Center left right. Still have sub and two Klipsch speakers to go. So far so good.

Pros: Better than Yamaha Sound Bar.

Cons: More power to drive the speakers wouldn't hurt.

Versatile, capable of connecting many components. Works very well and is affordable. Were it not for the terrible setup instructions, I'd give it a five-star rating.

    Pros: Bluetooth-ready.

    Cons: Lousy set up instructions.

I'm using this as a stand alone receiver for my outside patio audio. It powers 4 aw6500 definitive technology speakers and sounds great. The Bluetooth works flawlessly and for up to 45ft away before it starts to cut out. I haven't used it for any video so can't comment on that. But the audio quality is great. Receiver doesn't create a lot of heat and seems well built.

Pros: Price Bluetooth Powerful Low heat

    Cons:

    Great Receiver!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very satisfied with purchase! I upgraded from a Pioneer that was probably 12 years old and what a difference 12 years makes in sound quality. Very easy to switch between inputs and user friendly when it comes to the on screen menus.

Pros: Great sound quality, ease of use, ease of setup, Bluetooth is great

    Cons: None!

Great A/V receiver that does just about all that is needed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the S500BT to replace a Denon 1910 that had a fried circuit. This receiver does everything I need a reciever to to do to drive a 5.1 audio system with a Blue Ray, Apple TV and digital audio in from my TV as sources. Set up and instructions are much simpler and faster than the 1910. No audible sound problems, but I haven't heard any audible sound problems from recievers in over 30 years. Plenty of power to fill a decent sized family room. I don't have 7.2 sound nor do I perceive any value in it, so with this model, I don't waste money, electricity and generate heat for amps that are connected to nothing. Note I don't use FM with this receiver so I have no idea if it is any good. Same with the Blue Tooth.

Pros: Does everything needed. Easy set up. Decent build quality. Good price. Doesn't run hot.

Cons: No switched A/C power for the subwoofer.

    Super Easy Setup!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Others have mentioned the HDMI connections and they're great. It was super to connect the receiver to the TV then follow the step-by-step on-screen instructions. Never had a mic to calibrate the room's acoustics before. Maybe I'm just old school but I thought that feature was very cool, indeed. Sounds great and the price was very reasonable for a quality receiver.

Pros: Setup instructions, room calibration, it fit my rack.

Cons: None so far, haven't tried the Bluetooth connectivity.

I was very impressed with the feature set and quality of this unit for the price. The set up was very easy and I especially liked the automatic room equalization with definitely improved the balance between my front speakers and subwoofer. This is plenty powerful for the room I have it in, even cranking out some rock CDs. Certainly using a powered subwoofer helps a lot. All in all, a very nice product.

Pros: feature set price power and audio quality

Cons: none that I can think of

I purchased this unit for the features and price. I have 2 Klipsch RF52 speakers hooked up to it and found that the unit does not push them as well as I was hoping for. I have this unit in a small den and listen to music and movies through it. The set up was easy and I do like the speaker calibration that comes with the unit.

Pros: East set up, speaker calibration and use of bluetooth

Cons: Says 70 Watts RMS but doers not seem like it pushes my speakers

    Excellent Value

bearnik from Minneapolis, MN on 2/13/2015

Very surprised at the flexibility of this product. Five HDMI inputs, which is impressive at this price point. The thing that really impressed me was the TOSLINK (digital audio input on the Denon. There are two available). Check the back of your flat screen tv to see if you have a optical TOSLINK "out". If so you can receive the digital sound from any of the major broadcasters to the Denon. And you will be able to tell the difference. Another impressive point about the Denon is the bluetooth service. It has the ability to auto connect to various bluetooth devices regardless of which mode it is in.

Pros: Very nice audio quality. Two TOSLINK inputs. Bluetooth service. All-in-all, a very good value.

    Cons:

    Great Little Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After 15 years with my Onkyo I decided to upgrade to a home theater receiver with more modern capabilities. I chose this receiver because it provided the features that I needed most, 5.1, hdmi inputs and bluetooth. It's been a great little receiver and very reasonable also.

Pros: Easy to set up; the Denon name and its quality; great onscreen easy to follow adjustments; also bluetooth function works great.

    Cons: None yet.

Did not work with Comcast X1 DVR box

Mike R from Massachusetts on 1/30/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It would have been a nice receiver had it been compatible with my Comcast X1 DVR box. Even had Comcast come out and swap the box, big hassle as you might expect, and it did nothing to address the problem of not passing HDMI from the box to the TV, on or off. Fortunately I bought it from Crutchfield! They happily took it back and sent me a Sony STR-DH550 which was $50 less and worked perfectly!

    Pros:

Cons: Did not work with Comcast X1 DVR boxes

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace my 14 year old Kenwood surround sound receiver. The price ended up being better than listed. Setup was very easy. The Denon AVR-S500BT had everything i needed. The sound is great, louder and clear on my Kenwood speakers than the original receiver. I tried to see how loud i could go but my ears quit before the Denon AVR-S500BT reached its limits. Many features easy to adjust. I was even able to program my Direct Tv remote to work with this unit making it easier fot the wife to watch tv since she only needs 1 remote control. If you are looking for great Surround Sound, Tv or (Music via built in Blue tooth) look at the Denon AVR-S500BT.

Pros: Easy set up Blue Tooth Easy to use and adjust

    Cons: NONE!!!!!

StephanieR from Richmond, VA on 1/14/2015

Receivers have always looked very intimidating to me so I chose this one because it looked simple and concise in the pictures. I've done nothing more than "plug & play" with the settings so far, but the performance is good. There have been a couple of hiccups that I have come across, but I think it's more to do with the DVD's I'm playing and settings I haven't delved into than any issue with the receiver itself. The Bluetooth was an added bonus to be able to connect with my iMac for music playing - whether it be my full library or internet radio.

Pros: Fairly easy to set up and operate

    Cons:

    Easy set up

Bill E from Rye, New Hampshire on 1/13/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was only the second receiver I have purchased in the last ten years. Because the last was a Denon and reliable I decided to buy another. The difference of ease of set up was remarkable. All my speakers were already installed so the entire set up took maybe 15 minutes or so. The primary use is home theater / music. Both are great. Very satisfied.

Pros: Set up / sound quality

Cons: On line owners manual. Too long and expensive to print

BillyM from Goochland, VA on 11/30/2014

I was a little skeptical at first because of the price but did I ever get a more than what I paid. The simplicity of setting the receiver up was great. The set up mic kind of blew me away and I do not impress easily. I would definitely recommend this unit for a superb sound and quality. This unit replaced an Onkyo that was 7 years old and had problems.

Pros: Price, Sound quality, ease of set up, a lot of receiver for the money

    Cons: I can find any

I'm not an audiophile, and I got this mainly because I have an increasing number of devices and my old all in one Sony receive is not going to accommodate anymore. It's great for the money and the setup is pretty straightforward.

    Great Denon Quality

Randy from Wichita KS on 11/29/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pretty amazing what you get for this price. No, it isn't a thousand dollar reciever, but it is a great performer. I have a upper line Denon on my home theater and needed one for the living room and didn't want to spend a lot. This sounds great.

Pros: Bluetooth, Apple connectivity, Denon quality.

Cons: Please keep in mind, these are cons but fully expected at this price point. No 5 way speaker posts. The display does not show as much info as higher level Denon's.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good Receiver, good sound. I wanted this for the USB port so I could use flash drives for my music and this works very well. I am completely satisfied with this receiver.

Pros: Good display, good sound, more volume than I need. No complaints.

Cons: Set up instructions are awful. I do not have this connected through a TV, so cannot access the on screen setup. I think a printed manual would be a good addition.

    Denon + Crutchfield = 1 winning team!

Roger from Ashland, KY on 9/30/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was the first order I have placed with Crutchfield, that it was necessary for me to experience for myself, their legendary return policy. The first receiver had a bad amp in the front right channel. Another was shipped to my door pronto! This Denon was a replacement for a Onkyo receiver that I had purchased from Crutchfield about ten years ago. I had been quite pleased with the Onkyo, but it died; and when I read the specs of Denon at such a reasonable price, I HAD to give it a try. I am so glad that I did! The first improvement in audio that I noticed, was in the quality and separation of the rear channels. But it didn't stop with the rear speakers. Sound was better all around.....including the subwoofer. It was if I had upgraded my entire speaker system! And keep in mind I thought they sounded pretty darn good already! As you can probably tell, I'm just about as happy as I could be with this purchase. Just about. Which brings me to "why four stars instead of five?" The remote. I realize that this is Denon's entry level home theatre receiver. However I feel it is inexcusable to not include a learning remote. Most of us are juggling far too many remotes these days, and it just makes sense that this remote should be the "one to rule them all". Oh well, maybe a Harmony One is in my future!

Pros: Superior sound Discreet separation between the channels Biggest bang for the buck

    Cons: Remote control

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice receiver and very easy to set up. Not enough power is my only complaint. Have to turn up a lot to get some thump and this is with 2 Definitive speakers. Concerned somewhat because I plan to use the 5.1 set up at some point. My 70's Marantz receiver and Cerwin Vega speakers have a better sound! Going to need a sub for sure.

Pros: Nice entry level receiver for today's needs. Easy set up.

    Cons: Not enough power.

    Great low cost AVR

    EdM from Mississippi on 9/12/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great entry to mid-level AVR without sacrificing features. I was pleasantly surprised on the excellent quality with this low cost Denon AVR. I would expect to spend more on this type of AVR. I picked this Denon over more expensive AVRs because this one had just what I needed and nothing more at a low $250 price point. I use a Chromecast in the AV port to play music and videos on my home network so I did not need WiFi. The Denon was easy to set up and sounds great with my Polk New Monitor series speakers and Grado SR225e headphones.

Pros: Low cost AVR with just the features you need

Cons: Could have better speaker connectors

    Solid receiver

    Matt from Florida on 8/10/2014

Receiver works great! The Bluetooth streaming was easy to set up and so far has worked flawlessly with my iPhone. The only thing I didn't notice before ordering was that, from what I can tell, it completely lacks the ability to connect to your network. That means I cannot control it with my phone or my iPad like I can the one in my theater room. That's the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

Pros: Pushes my Polk speakers great

    Cons: Lack of network connectivity

    Audio Features

Discrete Amplification: The Denon AVR-S500BT AV receiver features a powerful Class AB power amplifier section equipped with discrete high current power transistors. This discrete amplifier design delivers optimum realism and stunning dynamic range. By using high current, high power discrete power devices, the amplifier is able to easily drive high quality speakers. The AV receiver's five channel Class AB amplifier is rated at 70-watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.08% THD, driving 2 channels).

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Denon AVR-S500BT AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). Even though the AV receiver will decode 7.1channel surround sound (via HDMI), it will only output 5.1ch surround, because it lacks Surround Back channel speaker outputs.

Other Listening Modes: You can also choose from the one of the following Listening Modes.

    • Stereo Playback: Sound is output from the front left and right speakers, as well as the powered subwoofer. If multichannel signals are input, they are mixed down to 2-channel audio. The tone settings can be adjusted.
    • Virtual Surround: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or set of headphones.
    • Multichannel Stereo: Left and right stereo channels are distributed to all the speakers so that stereo sound can be heard from all directions at any listening position.
    • Direct Mode: The Denon AVR-S500BT offers a Direct Listening Mode which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing.

Auto Room EQ: During the auto speaker setup process (known as "Auto Room EQ"), the included measuring microphone determines the right combination of optimum settings for the receiver to deliver the best possible sound quality from your particular speaker system and room. You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker settings.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust - Panorama (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).

Audio Enhancements: The Denon AVR-S500BT receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • Tone Settings: You can independently adjust the system's overall Bass and Treble settings from -6 to +6 dB.
    • Restorer: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The Restorer function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.
    • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.
    • Night Mode: The Night Mode optimizes sound for late night listening. This function can be set to Low, Mid, High, or Off.
    • Audio Delay: If needed, the audio signal can be manually delayed to match the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms.

Volume Settings: The AVR-S500BT offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output.
    • Power On Level: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).
    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Denon AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Digital & Analog Inputs: The AVR-S500BT features two optical digital (Toslink) inputs and a coaxial (RCA) digital input; the digital input are assignable. There are also two stereo analog (RCA) inputs.
    • Color-Coded Speaker Terminals: The receiver has spring-clip terminals for all speaker connections. The spring-clip terminals can accept bare wire and pin connectors. The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 6 to 16-ohm. The AV receiver comes with color-coded labels to easily identify which channel a speaker cable should be connected to. Since the speaker cables have labels in the same colors as the connectors on the AVR-S500BT's rear panel, there's no longer any confusion about which terminals they should be connected to.
    • Dual Sub Outputs: For compatibility with dual subwoofer home theater systems, the AVR-S500BT features two non-discrete subwoofer outputs. With dual subwoofers, which can be placed in different parts of the room, you'll benefit from response averaging, which helps provide smoother and more detailed deep bass, compared to a conventional single subwoofer speaker system. The same signal is output from each sub output.
    • Headphone Jack: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

AM/FM Tuner: The Denon AV receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with 56 station auto-preset memory tuning. You can also set your presets manually.

In my case, with my smart TV, I just feed an audio cable (optical) from the TV audio output to the Denon and then input all the periferals into the TV HDMI. My Samsung TV feeds the audio from any souce plugged into it to the digital audio out. That way the TV is the central point of the system. [ ROBERT  May 12, 2015 ]
Just connect your tv to your receiver (in) and it will play any tv apps directly through the system [ LARISSA  May 12, 2015 ]
Theres a separate video out for composite to the projector. You cant convert analog composite to digital with this unit. You can get a sewell composite to HDMI converter at sewell dot com. Its about 60 bucks. [ BRIAN G  Jan 28, 2015 ]
Sorry but do not know answer to this question. Only using HDMI cables. Suggest you send question to Denon. [ MICHAEL W  Jan 28, 2015 ]
Sorry but I dont know what upscape means or rcas. But if I understand correctly it will not upscale a composite signal to HDMI. Overall its a good simple home theater receiver. [ PAUL  Jan 28, 2015 ]
    Have not noticed any delays. [ Tiger-Heli  May 18, 2015 ]
The only thing that's noticeably delayed is Bluetooth. I tried getting fancy and hooking up my laptop (Macbook) to my tv to watch a movie, but using the Bluetooth for sound made it unwatchable. [ JAMES  Jan 09, 2015 ]
Yes, there are features where the audio can be sped up or slowed down to match the tv. I think that is standard for most of the newer version receivers that connect with the tv through HDMI. [ Geoff  Jan 08, 2015 ]
I have Directv, a BlueRay player, and an old VCR hooked up to this receiver and I have not noticed any problems regarding lip synch nor audio delay. I have a second TV connected to the Directv receiver through component cables and there is no noticeable delay between sound coming from that TV and the sound coming through the Denon when they are on at the same time. [ JAY  Jan 08, 2015 ]
    I haven't noticed any audio delay with this unit. [ GARY P.  Jan 08, 2015 ]
Yes...I do not have any issues with lip sync. For the price I paid, I consider it is the best when compared to my old DENON [paid around $500], audio died after 8 years. [ Surendra  Jan 08, 2015 ]
I have no idea, you should probably put that question to Denon directly, or perhaps Google it [ NORM  Jan 08, 2015 ]
This receiver does not have a phono pre-amp input. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help you track down a receiver that does that will also fit your other needs. [ Jeff  Jan 02, 2015 ]  Staff
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Unfortunately, you wouldn't be able to run a 4-ohm speaker set with the Denon AVR-S500BT. That receiver calls for a 8-ohm speaker set and is unable to match a 4-ohm impendence. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Nov 13, 2014 ]  Staff
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: I do not see that it has any form of CEC HDMI control. This means that remote control can only control the receiver itself and not the HDMI components that are connected to it. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Nov 12, 2014 ]  Staff
