High-performance home theater

Denon's AVR-S930H lets you get the most out of movies, music, and TV, at a price that's hard to ignore. This receiver works perfectly with the latest 4K TVs and Blu-ray players. And you'll get cutting-edge surround sound to match the immersive picture with decoding for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

Denon's Setup Assistant makes it a breeze to connect your gear and optimize settings with step-by-step instructions. The free Denon AVR Remote app lets you make detailed adjustments to your settings from your compatible mobile device.

Set up a wireless whole-home audio system with HEOS

With built-in HEOS technology, the AVR-S930H can be easily integrated into a wireless multi-room audio system. Stream music to HEOS wireless speakers in different rooms, and control each room's speakers independently with the free HEOS app. The app lets you control playback, browse music sources, and select which rooms you want to use. Play the same music throughout your home, or listen to something different in each room. You can play music from your own personal library, internet radio, and popular streaming services like Pandora®, Spotify®, and TIDAL, just to name a few.

A world of music at your fingertips

The AVR-S930H's Wi-Fi lets you access your own digital music library through your home network, and Bluetooth lets you stream anything you like from your phone or tablet. This powerful receiver even offers convenient playback of several different high-resolution audio formats through the front-panel USB port or a networked computer.

Music and video in a second room

The AVR-S930H has outputs for seven speakers, so you can enjoy a five-channel home theater setup in your living room and reassign the rear surround channels to power a pair of speakers in a separate room. Relax to your favorite tunes on the patio while the rest of the family takes in a movie with surround sound in the living room.

A second HDMI output lets you watch the same video source in your main zone and a second room. Start a movie in your living room and finish it in your bedroom or kitchen. Or watch the same content on a TV and projector in the same room.

I have to say, I've been out of the loop with home audio and have been a big fan of Denon for a long time, with that said this unit is amazing, it does everything and then some, very impressive and still learning all that it has to offer, so happy I made the buy and the Crutchfield sales rep (Ziggy) was so helpful, one stop shop for quality.

Pros: Streaming machine all you can throw at it.

    Cons: Haven't found one yet.

    Excellent!

Just want to move into the era of 4K TV with HDR and Dobly Vision. My last 2 AVR was Denon. Want to stick with what I have. This one has plenty of HDMI ports for the job. When my new (2017 model) 4K tv only has 1 HDMI port that support 4k HDR. This AVR solve the problem, pipe everything thru it. Sounded great too. Also with downloaded an app on my iPad to control it. Do need new HDMI cables thou to handle HDR.

    Pros: plenty of HDMI ports

    Cons:

    Very Intuitive

A Great Choice For Modern 4K Technology!

Michael from Charlotte, NC on 12/23/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It had been 18 years since my last receiver and television purchase and it was time to upgrade and I decided to go with the 4K technology. After months of research I settled on the Denon AVR-S930H as the driving force for my new home theater experience. The receiver has all the features i was looking for with the exception of a dedicated phone input. All the HDMI ports are HDCP 2.2 compliant, even the one on the front! It was definitely a learning experience getting it all set up but Crutchfield's tech support came through and made the process much more manageable. Heos is also a nice feature on this receiver. Even though I'm still getting acclimated to all the features I think I'm going to enjoy this receiver for years to come. Only time will tell.

Pros: Plenty of features. Excellent value. Great tech support from Crutchfield!

Cons: No phono input. Requires a preamp for phono. Will take some time learning to set it up and to get everything communicating.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Denon AVR-S930H is hooked up to a Defintive Technology 5.1 surround sound speaker system. Most of the time I listen to it while watching movies or sporting events, occasionally just music. The system is in a room that is about 12' x 20'. The sound quality is quite good to my ears, although I am not a serious audiophile I purchased the Denon to replace an older Kenwood receiver that died. The Denon has HDMI cable connections, which didn't exist when I purchased the Kenwood. The HDMI cables make connecting the receiver to a cable box and large-screen TV straight-forward. However, be aware that the printed owner's manual is woefully inadequate, which is why I assigned a 4-star rating. The Denon comes with a setup program that helps out; but, I didn't know it was there until I plugged it in. I had no idea that you could plug an HDMI cable from a cable box directly into the receiver rather than the TV until I spoke with a very helpful person at Crutchfield. The setup program checks to be sure that the speakers are hooked up correctly and producing sound. It also has a feature that uses a microphone to automatically adjust the sound for your room, a feature that was unavailable with the Kenwood. Currently, I use three remotes: one for the cable box, one for the TV and another for the amplifier. There may be a way to consolidate the functions of all three remotes into one; but, I haven't tried doing so, partly because the owner's manual for the amplifier is lacking.

Pros: Audio and video quality are very good. It has a setup program that is quite useful.

Cons: The owner's manual is woefully inadequate. Be prepared to spend some time setting up the system.

Great Picture, Great Sound, Great design

Troy from Ames, Iowa on 10/2/2017

The Denon avr-s930h home audio receiver is a great receiver. The design of the unit and the sound that it puts out is spectacular, but there are some flaws that exist that could be improved upon. This review will go over the likes and dislikes of this receiver. The design of the receiver is modern and sleek. The buttons are easy to see and have a nice click to them, and the knobs have detents for each input and volume selection. It makes a great addition to either the avid home theater enthusiast, or the novice listener. It seamlessly blends in with the rest of the equipment. The Display on the front is easy to read and not too bright, all while making sure to include information that is pertinent to the video/audio situation. While design is important, the functionality of the receiver is what matters. The buttons are separated and easy to push. The knobs turn easily and give the user friendly feedback, and the connections for wiring is made simple with a single row of outputs for speakers. Not only is the functionality great, but the sound and picture are great too. The sound, one of the more important aspects of the receiver, is clear and audible. It reproduces sounds accurately and can get loud while maintaining clarity. With the included Dolby Atmos, the dynamic ability of the receiver to reproduce surround sounds makes it feel as if you were in the movie. Movies specially formatted in 7.1 come to life. Picture wise, the receiver does a great job of upscali

Pros: Dolby Atmos Wifi Bluetooth 4k upscaling dynamic sound 7.2 channel

Cons: Set up time takes a while Sound is on the cold side Highs can be harsh Difficulty navigating menu to find settings

This AV receiver is awesome. Installation and setup was very easy following the excellent instructions on the tv screen. I rated it 5 stars for excellence and easy to use. My only complaint is navigating thru the remote to get to fm radio stations. I would Rather have presets on the receiver. Overall very good choice.

    Pros: Simple to set up

Bob from Glen Burnie, MD on 7/4/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound and picture with effective upscaling of both. Set up and calibration well organized and effective. Lack of a printed user's manual is an inconvenience but becoming the norm in the business. The lack of a switched outlet on the receiver is a major pain since I use a powered subwoofer and a Monster power conditioning unit. A switched outlet on my previous receiver allowed me to switch the subwoofer on and off with the receiver. Without the outlet, I was forced to purchase a small remotely controlled power hub to power the sub and other gear such as the ROKU. Turning the Zone 2 speakers on or off is far more cumbersome than it should be to the point I felt it necessary to create a "cheat sheet" outlining the process so I could do it again in the future without having to refer to the user's manual.

Pros: Great sound and picture. Easy set up and calibration.

Cons: No switched outlet or dedicated Zone 2 speaker terminals. No switched outlet requires manual switching of a powered subwoofer or a workaround. Turning on zone 2 is clumsy.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this Denon stereo receiver (Denon AVR-S930H). It was easy to set up, calibrate, update, etc. . I am now completely squared away and am the envy of my best friend. The sound is incredible, but when I add the magic of 65" LG OLED curved 3D screen, an Ultra Bluray movie or 3D Bluray it's better than being at the movies. I also connected other devices like 4K Roku Ultra and my standalone computer for true internet surfing. The TV also has Smart apps that I run though the receiver (like Youtube, NetFlix and Amazon) and each plays flawlessly through the receiver and helps maximize the whole experience.

Pros: Easy set up and updates.

Cons: Finding the best sound for whatever I am playing through the TV, i.e. Dolby, Surround, etc . (sometimes it takes a lot of scrolling to find the best setting).

I am sure it is just me but I am having trouble with this receiver. My older model did not have these problems. First off, I can not hear my TV if I don't have the receiver turned on and listening to it through my surround sound system. Many times surround sound isn't needed for new etc. I was told it's because of some sort of HDMI problem??? Also, I can't believe that it won't recognize my IPOD! It says that it should but it doesn't. I have an old Classic that it said it would work but doesn't. I had my buddy insert his IPOD which is the lasted model made, by USB port on the front and switched the IPOD button on the remote and his isn't recognized either. Do I have a defective system?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great sounding AVR for the price point particularly for the features you get with this baby. There is a very noticeable improvement over an older Integra AVR that was over twice the price. That really surprised me. Very smooth yet still carries a punch. I haven't pushed it too hard, but it's driving my speakers just fine. The surround sound seems so much better than the Integra and they both used Audessy to set it up. Couldn't be happier. Perhaps just a tad more power, but like I said, they still have plenty of punch. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Excellent Sound. Incredible Features for the money Crutchfield Service is Amazing! Cosmo is a wealth of knowledge

Cons: Unfortunately, No analog phono "out". I knew that going into it. There is a work-around for a few bucks.

Stunning performance at a nice price

    Michael from California on 5/11/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Denon has given the excellent AVR a thorough think-through, even a collapsible cardboard tripod for its Audacity audio analysis microphone. Setup was a breeze with the receiver's on-screen walkthrough. Tell it how many speakers you use, where they're located, and the S930H does the rest, first performing a phase test, then activating its Audacity analysis tool for a 15-minute tweaking of room dynamics delivering a stunning soundscape on its first try. I never knew my subwoofer was capable of what Denon's got it doing. The unit has several options for tweaking audio without messing with Audacity's settings - upping movie dialogue EQ, for instance, which you may use occasionally. Overall, audio response is spectacular. I love all the Dolby flavors it speaks. Several of its 8 HDMI connections are labeled for inputs I don't use, but there's no need to manually reset HDMI connection specs - the AVR does it automatically, adjusting accordingly. Videowise, it allows clean 4K passthrough if the receiver is powered down to standby mode. It also has several presets for various source types. I passed on these, using my ULED monitor's settings, but they're there. There's a status button displaying the specs of content it's getting, with a side-by-side of your setup. Arc and HDR, too. Nice. I did pull out one of its banana plug audio inputs, which easily snapped back in. Denon phone support was very fast, cool, and knowledgable. Downsides? Where have you been all my life,

Pros: Great value for money Simple, straightforward setup Audacity EQ analysis, dramatically giving new life to older speakers Seamless switching between multiple 4K and other inputs Automatic firmware updates via ethernet or wireless

Cons: Very tight banana plug inputs. Hold them place with unplugging speakers . A big DENON logo on screen when no source is selected.

Immersive Surround Sound: The Denon AVR-S930H AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats - like Dolby Atmos or Dolby Surround and DTS:X or DTS Neural:X.

    • Dolby Atmos: Dolby Atmos surround sound technology dispenses with channel-based coding in favor of more advanced object-based coding, giving the soundtrack designer the ability to precisely place sounds anywhere in the 3-dimensional space. Now you can enjoy this same award-winning technology at home with the AVR-S930H that lets you to connect a 5.1 surround sound speaker system and 2 additional overhead speakers or 2 Dolby Atmos elevation speakers for the ultimate home theater experience.
    • Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your 2ch or multichannel movie soundtracks using your existing 5.1ch, 7.1ch, or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".
    • DTS:X: The latest immersive surround sound system, DTS:X features object-based audio coding that lets the soundtrack designer place sonic elements anywhere in the 3D acoustic soundspace, and provides for overhead speakers to deliver a stunning surround sound experience. Along with DTS:X decoding, the AVR-S930H features DTS-HD Master Audio decoding and other DTS audio technologies.
    • DTS Neural:X: Further, DTS:X incorporates Neural:X, the latest spatial remapping technology from DTS, which provides a fully immersive output for all types of source content; this includes DTS bitstreams and non-encoded (PCM) data. Neural:X delivers a thrilling sense of immersive sound to your speaker layout regardless of the original source format.

Audyssey Bronze: The AVR-S930H features the Audyssey Bronze suite of powerful DSP features - including MultEQ speaker/room calibration, Dynamic Volume, and Dynamic EQ.

    • MultEQ: Via the supplied measuring microphone, Audyssey MultEQ measures all the speakers in your home theater during setup, including the subwoofer, and then generates multiple high precision DSP room acoustic correction filters, which together provide smoothest and most natural tonal balance, regardless of the brand or model of the various speakers. Up to six listening positions can be measured, configured, and recorded. MultEQ compensates for both time and frequency characteristics of the listening area based on "Audyssey Setup" measurement results. Selection is done from three types of compensation curves - Reference (default and recommended, L/R Bypass, Flat, and Off).
    • Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume features advanced psycho-acoustic processing to deliver clear dialog and wide range sound at reduced volume levels so that you can enjoy theater-level clarity at whatever listening level you choose.
    • Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ also features advanced DSP processing to deliver full range wide-band response, even at reduced volume levels. Dynamic EQ Reference Level Offset provides three offsets from the film level reference (5 dB, 10 dB, and 15 dB) that can be selected when the mix level of the content is not within the standard.

Denon Original & Direct Listening Modes: Denon's Original Listening Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. Choose between Rock Arena, Jazz Club, Matrix, Video Game, Mono Movie, Multichannel Stereo, or Virtual (surround from only front speakers or headphones). You can also choose a Direct listening mode, which bypasses any surround or tone processing. Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing.

Audio Enhancements: The Denon AVR-S930H receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CINEMA EQ (Cinema Equalizer): The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Digital & DTS modes.
    • Compressed Audio Restorer: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The Restorer function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.
    • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.
    • Room Size: The receiver's audio output can be set to simulate the acoustics of a Small, Medium Small, Medium (default), Medium Large, or Large room environment. This setting is not an indication of the actual size of your listening area.

Level Adjustments: The AVS-S930H provides the following level adjustments.

    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
    • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to increase the dialogue output from the center channel.
    • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Volume Settings: The AVR-S930H offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output.
    • Power On Level: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Audio Outputs: The Denon AV receiver features color-coded binding-post speaker terminals, dual sub outputs, and a front-panel headphone jack.

    • Color-Coded Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding-post terminals for all speaker connections. The binding-post terminals can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 4 to 16-ohm. The AV receiver comes with color-coded labels to easily identify which channel a speaker cable should be connected to. Since the speaker cables have labels in the same colors as the connectors on the AVR-S930H's rear panel, there's no longer any confusion about which terminals they should be connected to.
    • Dual Sub Outputs: For compatibility with dual subwoofer home theater systems, the AVR-S930H features two non-discrete subwoofer outputs. With dual subwoofers, which can be placed in different parts of the room, you'll benefit from response averaging, which helps provide smoother and more detailed deep bass, compared to a conventional single subwoofer speaker system. The same signal is output from each sub output.
    • Headphone Jack: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

    Video Section

HDMI 2.0b: Featuring eight HDMI inputs (including one conveniently located on the front-panel) and two HDMI outputs, the AVR-S930H incorporates an advanced video section that features the latest HDMI 2.0b specification, including support for 4K/60 Hz Ultra-HD video, 4:4:4 Pure Color sub-sampling,BT.2020 Wide Color Gamut, & High Dynamic Range (HDR). The AVR-S930H also features HDCP 2.2 compatibility, a requirement for 4K Ultra HD copy-protected content.

    • 4K/60Hz Pass-Through: The AVR-S930H supports up to 4K (3840x2160 pixels) video @ 60 frames per second on all of its HDMI inputs and output (pass-through only). It will also pass a 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p video signals via HDMI
    • HDCP 2.2: All of the receiver's HDMI jacks support HDCP 2.2, which fully complies with the latest copyright protection standard for 4K video transmission.
    • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: All of the receiver's rear-panel HDMI jacks support RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2, and YCbCr 4:2:0 color subsampling (@ 60Hz or 50Hz). With 4:4:4 color subsampling, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail. The front-panel HDMI only supports 4K 60/50Hz using format YCbCr 4:2:0 only.
    • Wide Color Gamut (BT.2020): The BT.2020 color standard delivers a much wider color gamut and represents about 75% of the total visual color spectrum, while the current Rec. 709 color standard selected as the color space for HDTVs and early generation 4K Ultra HDTVs covers only 35% of the total visual color spectrum.

HDR Compatibility: HDR provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. The receiver supports HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and HLG (via 2017 firmware update).

    • HDR 10: HDR 10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It supports 10-bit color and 1,000 nits. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
    • HLG (via 2017 Firmware Update): HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.
    • Dolby Vision: Unlike HDR 10 which contains static metadata and HLG which uses no metadata, Dolby Vision utilizes dynamic metadata which adjusts brightness, color, and contrast automatically for each scene. Dynamic metadata carries information that maps every image to your TV's display capabilities, so you see more of what the content creator intended. Dolby Vision supports 12-bit color and 10,000 nits.

HDMI Video Upscaling (up to 4K): The Denon AV receiver's sophisticated video processor provides upscaling of standard definition (480i/480p) and high definition (720p/1080i/1080p) HDMI connected sources to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels). The AV receiver only upscales HDMI input sources through the receiver's HDMI 1-2 outputs. The receiver does not offer analog-to-HDMI upconversion.

Dual HDMI Outputs: The two HDMI outputs are parallel, so the same audio/video signal is output through both and can be used simultaneously.

Other HDMI Features: The Denon AVR-S930H AV receiver's HDMI connectivity also offers 3D video pass-through, ARC (Audio Return Channel), Deep Color & x.v.Color support, as well as an auto LipSync function.

    • 3D Ready: The AVR-S930H AV receiver supports 3D video pass-through (720p/1080p only) from connected 3D-compatible Blu-ray, games and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs (all 3D components must be connected via HDMI). Special eyewear will be required for viewing 3D content.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature of the AVR-S930H's HDMI monitor output allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to the receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
    • Deep Color & x.v.Color Support: The AV receiver supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture
    • LipSync: This function adjusts the delay between audio and video output. You can do this manually or have the receiver set the LipSync function automatically. When connected to a TV via HDMI the receiver automatically adjusts audio output timing (0-500ms) if the TV supports an automatic LipSync function. You can also manually delay the sound output up to 500ms to synchronize it with the video image.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When the AV receiver is in "Standby" mode and the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled, both audio/video streams from the receivers HDMI input will be output to your television, via the AV receiver's HDMI monitor output. Once the receiver is turned "On", only video will pass through the monitor output to your TV and the audio is directed to the receiver's speaker outputs.

    • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
