    Totally Unintuitive Hook-up

Oubache from New Canaan, Connecticut on 10/5/2014

The product and the on-line technical manual are totally non-intuitive. After using up a lot of time with tech support at Crutchfield,, and Denon, I was finally advised to take it to a factory-approved service center up-state. The repair slip came back with the notation "firmware uploaded." It has worked fairly well since then on a Wi-Fi connection, with the source stream dropped out only two or three times a day. The search mechanism (for streams) is clunky or non-intuitive (to use that adjective again) to set up. I see that the product has been discontinued, and I can see why.

Pros: Claims the ability to access 30,000 audio streams worldwide and reproduces the sound fairly well.

Cons: On a wi-fi connection the sound source drops out two or three times a day and, as far as I can tell, must be manually reset. The receiver and its on-line instruction manual are non-intuitive. The search software is equally non-intuitive.

    Ok not great

    DKC from Denver on 8/24/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice sound and quite powerful for a compact unit. However if you are buying this for the wireless connectivity consider something else. It is not too hard to set up despite what the one star reviewer said. He was right about the signal always dropping. At first I thought I was too far from the wireless router but even when I put it next to the router it still dropped the signal. So I plugged it in to the network to see if his would solve the problem but no such luck. So I am sending it back and trying something else. All that said if you want to plug in directly and get great sound this is for you. Plenty of power to rock the room

    Pros: Great sound while connected

Cons: Drops the signal constantly even when hooked directly into the network

    So Nice I Bought 3

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a small system for my family room and office and tried a couple of Teacs that sounded fine but had network issues with Internet radio and local NAS connectivity. I tried one of these and it was just about perfect. It plays all of the network accessible audio I want such as Internet radio, Plex servers, NAS, etc. I have the first hooked up to two Infinity Primus 143 speakers and a Polk sub in my office, the second to two Infinity Primus 153 speakers and a Primus PS38 sub in the family room and the third to two Cambridge Audio S20 speakers in the bedroom. You can give them "friendly names" so they show up as Office, Bedroom and Family Room in the app.

Pros: - Runs audio from all network sources including NAS, Plex, Internet radio and more. - Plenty of power for all of my speakers - Manage most functions from the app, which works with multiple systems - Small size - Easy setup - just answer a few questions and you are up and running - With the app you do not need line of sight so the amp can be tucked away anywhere - Informative display - Apps for Apple and Android work well and display what is playing in most cases depending on source

Cons: - No Bluetooth - No Windows Phone App (though there is a 3rd party app that works) - Only has one alarm (would like multiple alarms that can be set on a weekly calendar)

I was looking for a music system for my patio that could access music I store on a USB connected drive on my router. I really like DLNA because now I can keep all my music in one place and access it from anywhere. The Denon AR5 worked perfectly and the android app made it controllable from all my devices.

Pros: small, easy to set up and use with good sound.

    Cons: nothing i've found yet.

    Denon Scores Again

RC from Okemos, MI on 3/12/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Using to stream music from internet radio and ITunes. Set up was simple and it works flawlessly. Have it connected to two Focal Chorus 714 speakers (see review). The receiver is so small that I have it tucked under an end table and hardly notice its presence. 65 watts per channel easily powers a robust, clear sound with plenty of kick to spare.

Pros: Versatile with built in wireless internet applications. Denon tradition of high quality. Small and handsome box. Bass and Treble control via remote.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with this (final) upgrade to my system. Even my wife thinks I may finally be done.. I wanted a small, inconspicuous stereo system to provide background music for reading and entertaining in our vacation condo ( in 600 square foot LR/DR). Most of the music I listen to is classical, from my home collection transported on my iPod Touch. Two years ago I started out with a popular Japanese shelf system (from Crutchfield). Wasn't happy so I added a 10" woofer. That helped but the midrange now seemed muddy. Upgraded to a set of PSB bookshelf speakers. Big improvement, but even though the speakers were high sensitivity the original amplifier was straining during peak volume. Bought the Denon DR-AN5 and I am now a happy man. Sound quality (clarity) is excellent - it does not rely on iPod DAC. More than enough power. Internet radio is a bonus. But most importantly - my wife has not yet said "I told you so" ( she predicted I would not be satisfied with my original system).

Pros: Sound quality, compact size, plenty of power, easy set up, easy software update.

Cons: No printed manual, sometimes difficult to establish contact with iPod after a cold start. Also - I would like to see the "now playing" selection on both the iPod screen and the DR-ANW screen rather than either/or.

    Cons: None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works well. Have used wireless, iPod doc, USB input, and aux in (analog only so far - testing digital tonight). Love the integrated SirriusXM and pandora aceess. Using banana clips for quick connect disconnect of speaker wires. Ability to adjust bass and treble as well as balance is nice. Using Polk outdoor speakers and sounds superb. AirPlay functionality is awesome. Just wish apple would allow multiple speaker selection when using iPad and not limit that feature to Mac.

Pros: Easy setup - intuitive design

    Cons: Price

    Great little unit

Kipling from Pittsburgh, PA on 7/8/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Denon-DR-AN5 is exactly what I needed for my newly remodeled kitchen. It took a while for me to convince my wife that we had to have a state of the art audio system for our new kitchen, but she finally agreed. She wanted to keep it out of view, so its small size fits easily into my new pantry. I opted to hardwire the ethernet since the wall was open anyway. I ran a fiber optic cable to another section of the kitchen where we will place our countertop TV. Paired with Klipsch-R-1650-C ceiling speakers the sound quality is very good. On the trial run everything from Bocelli to Bonamasa sounded great. I look forward to exploring all the fun features of the unit. After the floor is done I will have to convince the wife I need to upgrade my I-pod so we can enjoy air-play. Anyway, if you are looking for a compact receiver with the latest toys this is you baby.

Pros: small size, sharp looking, easy to use.

    Cons: could be cheaper

Mine is all black. I control it all three ways... directly, remote and with the iTunes app. I love it. It's perfect for me for radio stations, MOG and all my iTunes music files. [ RONALD  Dec 27, 2013 ]
I have black one. It can be controlled for most functions from buttons on the top of the unit. [ STEPHEN M  Dec 27, 2013 ]
I purchased this item in black, so I'm unable to respond as to the actual color of the "white" version. The receiver can only be controlled with the remote. We are very pleased with the performance of the received in the three months we have owned it. [ JOHN K  Dec 27, 2013 ]
Hi peter, can't comment on the color I have black. If your question is can the device be controlled via its IP address - it can but only configuration parameters and not things like volume control, input select, etc - hth [ ANDREW J  Dec 27, 2013 ]
Sorry. There are buttons on top of the unit, but not a complete set as on the remote. (I never use them, so I forgot they were there!) You might want to download the manual before you buy one. Pretty complex device, and there are lots of functions I never use. [ LEONARD  Dec 27, 2013 ]
Unit is white. Cannot control directly - only by remote or by app. Great unit! [ LEONARD  Dec 27, 2013 ]
The Denon DR-AN5 is White. It can be completely controlled either Directly (buttons on the unit), by the Remote Control or from an app that runs on iOS device (iPhone, IPad/Pod iTouch) or Android Device. I have not used the iOS controller. The Android controller works quite well both through my cellphone as well as through my Tablet.. [ RAMESH  Dec 27, 2013 ]
