Denon's flagship DVD-5910CI merges time-tested Denon quality with high-tech innovations. Tipping the scales at over 40 pounds, this DVD player boasts pro-grade processing, advanced digital connectivity, and rock-solid vibration-resistant construction. Its THX® Ultra badge is a guarantee of superlative A/V performance — gorgeous, theater-quality images and pristine sound.

State-of-the-art picture quality
Denon outfitted the '5910CI with several high-end technologies that are usually only found in professional video equipment costing tens of thousands of dollars. One of these is the Realta™ HQV chip, which incorporates broadcast-quality video processing from Teranex. The HQV chip delivers improved motion detection, and de-interlaces both film and video sources on a pixel-by-pixel basis for smoother playback. Plus, it accurately detects and corrects lines on a per-pixel level to effectively avoid "jaggies." No wonder the HQV chip was honored with a Best of Innovations award at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2005.

Other cutting-edge features include 10-bit Denon Pixel Image Correction, an ultra-sophisticated contour correction circuit. Plus, Anchor Bay Technologies' 10-bit Precision Video Scaling™ provides DVD video upconversion up to top-of-the-line 1080p. The combined result of all this advanced video processing is a dramatic improvement in your viewing experience. You'll enjoy clean, blur-free movement; true-to-life colors and contours; and deeper, richer detail — a videophile's dream come true.

Top-flight audio processing and connections
The '5910CI offers impressive sound quality for passionate music lovers, too. It uses five 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters — custom-designed for Denon by Burr-Brown — to bring out the delicate nuances of your favorite recordings. Play high-resolution SACD or DVD-Audio discs for a breathtakingly lifelike musical experience — close your eyes to hear the location of the instruments, and listen as your living room is transformed into an expansive performance space. And with two "Pure Direct" modes, you can switch off the video circuits, digital outputs, and fluorescent display, for unadulterated audiophile bliss.

The '5910CI leads the pack in digital audio connectivity, too. Rather than the six analog cables required by most multichannel music players, this player lets you send DVD-Audio, SACD, and CD signals to a compatible component via its Denon Link output. It can also pass DVD-Audio or SACD signals digitally using either of two IEEE 1394 outputs, and DVD-Audio via HDMI. (Denon's state-of-the-art AVR-5805 receiver enables all three digital connection types.) These single-cable connections simplify hookup and ensure clean, noise-free signal transfer.

Superior build quality
Denon wraps all of this sophisticated technology in an ultra-sturdy, four-layer chassis. This rugged design suppresses even the smallest performance-robbing external vibrations. Inside, a discrete four-block design eliminates mutual interference between circuit boards to ensure pure, pristine picture and sound.

A state-of-the-art player

Mark from Wirtz, VA USA on 4/16/2006

If you can afford this baby you won't be disappointed...it would take a $8K or higher player to beat the audio performance this thing has and you won't find better video performance at any price. I'm using mine with the iLink connection into a reference A/V preamp...both units had no trouble communicating with each other over iLink from the git-go. I can't stress enough the benefits of using either the iLink or Denon Link III connection...it gets rid of the rats nest of wires you get with having to use 6 analog RCA cables for multi-channel SACD/DVD-Audio and it keeps the audio signal in a pure digital form until it hits your preamp/receiver...all in one very thin cable. Using that and a HDMI video connection means only 2 thin cables to transmit anything this player can play...very neat and tidy that way. If you have a home theater system with any amount of components you know exactly what I mean. This things sounds great with SACD and DVD-Audio discs over iLink. The video processing on this unit is close to perfect; no more anomalies if you're using the 720p/1080i/1080p upconversion. I love mine and I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a state-of-the-art player.

Features

DVD-5910 Updates: The DVD-5910CI is an updated version of Denon's DVD-5910 flagship DVD Audio-Video/SACD/CD player. There are two main upgrades:

  • Denon Link 3rd Edition: The Denon Link has been upgraded to include digital signals from a Super Audio CD disc. Note: Some later versions of the original DVD-5910 already had this upgrade.
  • 1080p HDMI Output: The unit has been made compatible with 1080p video signals via the HDMI output for use with 1080p-compatible high resolution displays and A/V receivers.

Note: These new features can be used with the following Denon A/V receivers (as of February 2006):

  • Denon Link 3rd: AVR-5805, AVR-4806, AVR-4306, AVR-3806, and AVR-3805.
  • 1080p HDMI Output: AVR-4306 and AVR-3806

Denon Link (3rd Edition): The DVD-5910CI has an RJ-45 Denon Link 3rd Edition output. Through the Denon Link, the DVD player can transfer 6-channel 96kHz/24-bit or two channel stereo 192kHz/24-bit DVD-Audio signals, as well as 2-channel and multi-channel SACD signals, digitally to that receiver. Because the signal transfer is balanced and the voltage is lower than coaxial or unbalanced cables, the Denon Link is far less susceptible to radiated noise, which helps to ensure the highest level of signal transfer. Denon Link 3rd Edition uses a different signal from Denon Link S.E. (Second Edition). Because of this, the Denon Link 3rd Edition signals are only compatible with A/V receivers that are Denon Link 3rd compatible. In the Digital Interface Setup, you can select the type of signal output through the Denon Link jack: 3rd, 2nd (Auto), 2nd (IEEE1394), 2nd (Analog), or Off. If the unit is set to 2nd Edition signals, there will be no output from an SACD.

HDMI: The unit's HDMI jack passes both digital video and audio using a single cable. HDMI Version 1.1 is compatible with copy protected DVDs with HDCP and CPPM (Content Protection for Pre-recorded Media/used in DVD-Audio) which was not the case with version 1.0. You can select the type of video signal output by the HDMI jack: 480p/576p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The HDMI and DVI-D outputs are active simultaneously at the same scaling rate, however, there is no output from the DVI-D jack when the unit is set to 1080p.

10-Bit I/P Converter: Conversion from interlaced to progressive (I/P Converter) video is accomplished using a 10-bit converter developed by Silicon Optics and Denon. The DVD-5910CI is the first consumer product to be powered with the Realta with HQV (Hollywood Quality Video) decoding engine by Teranex (built by Silicon Optics). The benefit of this high speed engine is dramatically improved detection of motion and pixel-level regularity from both film and video sources.

Multi-Directional Diagonal Filter (MDDF):Used for the first time on the DVD-5910CI, MDDF detects and corrects at a pixel-level the directionality of lines, avoiding the "jaggies" often seen in supposedly straight diagonal lines.

Denon Pixel Image Correction (DPIC): Also built on a 10-bit platform, DPIC's pixel by pixel correction compares nine different pixels of adjacent video data for each pixel correction. Luminance and chroma signals are also processed to suppress ringing noise and other artifacts.

DVDO Video Scaler: Anchor Bay Technology's DVDO video scaler upconverts standard DVD signals to HD-compatible 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, and passes it through the DVI and HDMI outputs. Upconverted signals are not passed by the component video outputs.

Dual Discrete Video Circuit (DDVC): Isolated video circuits for interlaced and progressive signals improve video precision.

Super Sub Alias Filter: The video S/N ratio can be improved when unwanted signals of higher than 6.75 MHz are removed. The DVD-5910CI uses a Super Sub Alias Filter that cuts signals of unwanted frequencies following D/A conversion. This produces flat characteristics, ensuring that adverse influences do not affect video signals inside the essential frequency band. Folding noise is eliminated. In the DVD-5910CI, the Super Sub Alias Filter is applied to the chroma signal as well as the luminance signal, improving color reproduction.

Video D/A Converters: The DVD-5910CI uses two 14-bit, 216-MHz video D/A converters to tap the maximum potential DVD has to offer. Independent D/A converters are used for Progressive and Interlaced picture reproduction. These converters provide a high sampling frequency of 216-MHz, with 8x oversampling for Progressive video and 16x oversampling for Interlaced video, resulting in the most detailed D/A conversion.

Noise Shaped Video (NSV): The NSV feature works in the digital domain to reduce noise in the video signal frequency band, improving video signal to noise ratio and enhancing video signal linearity.

8 MB Buffer Memory: This unit is equipped with an 8 MB buffer memory to ensure that both picture and sound are played without interruption when the DVD changes from layer 1 to layer 2, or in the rare event of a pickup dropout.

Thorough Vibration-Resistant Design: A variety of designs have been incorporated in the DVD-5910CI to suppress unwanted vibrations. The sturdy 4-layer construction is designed to be resistant to any vibration. A heavyweight chassis and low center of gravity make for a low vibration design. The pickup mechanism is positioned at the center to reduce the effects of external vibrations.

Advanced Loading Mechanism: The newly-developed loading mechanism uses a hybrid material that is highly resistant to vibration in order to prevent adverse transfer to the tray.

Independent Power Supply: Independent power supplies provided for the separate areas of the player eliminate mutual distortion with other blocks. Clean supplies of power to the various circuits contribute to high picture and sound quality.

DVI-D Output: The DVD-5910CI has a DVI Jack for connecting a compatible TV or monitor. This player supports HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) technology, which provides secure data transmission for high definition video. Using the setup menu, you can choose to output the signal as 1080i, 720p, or 480p. Note: There is no output if the unit is set to 1080p.

IEEE 1394: Two 4-pin IEEE 1394 jacks are included for passing the audio (audio only) from a DVD-Video disc, DVD-Audio disc, and SACD in digital form to compatible Denon components. The output signal is A&M protocol compliant.

Note: Denon cannot guarantee that the DVD-5910CI can be connected to other IEEE 1394 compatible components not manufactured by Denon.

HDCD Decoder: HDCD (High Definition Compatible Digital) is a digital audio recording technology, compatible with the conventional CD format. It significantly reduces distortion during recording to expand the dynamic range and realize higher resolution than standard CD. The HDCD decoder allows the DVD-5910CI to play discs that have been recorded in HDCD format and to bring out superior sonic performance from these discs. Combined with Denon's advanced audio technology, the DVD-5910CI masterfully reproduces HDCD's rich dynamic range and beautiful sound quality.

Audio D/A Converter: The DVD-5910CI uses the best Burr-Brown 24-bit, 192 kHz audio D/A converters currently available. There are five converters for use with 5.1 Channel output, resulting in significantly improved channel separation, signal to noise ratio, and dynamic range.

Speaker Configuration: During the initial set up it is possible to set the speaker size, distance, and crossover point. The crossover point for bass management can be fixed at 40, 60, 80, 100 or 120 Hz with 12 dB high pass and 24 dB low pass slopes. The digital bass management circuit uses Analog Device's Melody 100 "HammerHead" processor.

Multi-channel DVD-Audio Playback: DVD-Audio is a multi-channel format used for high resolution audio recording. This unit can decode and play DVD-Audio discs with a sampling rate up to 192 kHz with a 24-bit word length.

SACD: Unlike PCM based technology (CD/MiniDisc/DVD/Audio DVD, etc.), Super Audio CD is based on Direct Stream Digital (DSD) encoding, which does not require decimation and interpolation filters. DSD is much simpler and enables a 1-bit signal to be recorded directly. DSD encodes music at 2,822,400 samples per second (64 times that of standard CD) allowing you to hear sound with incredible detail and clarity. DSD combines the advantages of digital recording with the best characteristics of analog sound. The DVD-5910CI unit will play 2-channel and multi-channel Super Audio CDs. During SACD playback, neither the optical digital nor coaxial outputs operate. Either the Digital Link 3rd output, analog outputs, or the IEEE 1394 outputs must be used to listen to SACDs.

AL24 Processing for All Channels: Denon has further developed its proprietary AL24 Processing, an analog waveform reproduction technology, to support the 192 kHz sampling frequency of DVD-Audio. This new technology, AL24 Processing Plus, thoroughly suppresses quantization noise associated with D/A conversion of LPCM signals to reproduce the low-level signals with optimum clarity. Additionally AL24 expands original PCM 16-bit recordings to 24-bit word length using interpolation algorithms developed by Denon. The result is a more natural reproduction of spatial information and clarity that will bring out all the delicate nuances of the music.

Pure Direct Mode: The DVD-5910CI includes two Pure Direct modes that further improve sound quality. During analog audio output, Pure Direct can turn off digital signal outputs, video signal outputs, and the front panel display, which can easily influence the sound quality of the analog audio signals. You can define which operations are to be turned off and store those preferences in memory.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2 format (128 kbps and faster recommended). Windows Media Audio (WMA9) is also supported using a compression rate from 64-160 kbps.

Note: The DVD-5910CI is not compatible with packet write software or ID3 Tag information.

JPEG Disc Playback: JPEG files stored on CD-Rs and CD-RWs can be played as a slide show and enjoyed on your TV using the DVD-5910CI. Kodak picture CDs and Fujicolor CDs are also supported. During slide show playback, you can rotate an image 90-degrees clockwise or counterclockwise, flip an image vertically or horizontally, or zoom in on an image. In addition, you can play the pictures in random order.

Note: JPEG files recorded on a Macintosh computer cannot be played.

Surround Sound Processors: Along with the multi-channel processors for DVD-Audio and SACD, Dolby Digital and DTS surround decoders are built in.

SRS TruSurround: Using this feature, the multi-channel sound normally achieved with five speakers is recreated using only the two front stereo speakers.

Picture Zooming: During DVD-Video and Video CD playback, you can enlarge the picture by 1.5x, 2x, or 4x. During DVD-Audio playback, you can enlarge the picture by 2x or 4x. You can then use the cursor buttons to move the enlarged viewing area up, down, left, or right.

Markers: Up to 5 points on a DVD-Video or DVD-Audio disc can be stored in memory and easily recalled. Markers are automatically cleared when the power is turned off or when the tray is opened.

Resume Function: The Resume function allows the player to remember the point where you stopped play. Playback will resume from the point stored in memory. The stopping point is cleared if the tray is opened or the stop button is pressed a second time.

Auto Power-Off: If the unit is in stop mode for approximately 30 minutes, it will automatically switch to standby mode.

Dimmer: The display can be adjusted to one of three brightness levels, or the display can be turned off.
