Denon AH-NCW500 Globe Cruiser

Earpiece control wheel

Go wireless or wired

Nothing beats Bluetooth connectivity for ease of use when you're on the go. Wirelessly stream music and take calls from your compatible device with the AH-NCW500's intuitive built-in controls on the earpieces. A rotary control on the right earcup controls volume, while center buttons on each earpiece control music playback and call functions. Tiny dual microphones located on the right earpiece work together to ensure that your speech is always clear and easy to hear in any environment.

What about when you're on the plane and the flight attendant tells you to turn off your wireless device? Denon has you covered: once you're airborne, go wired by connecting the optional cord to the right earcup and your mobile device, or use the included airplane adapter to access the airline's audio offerings. The cord can also be used when the internal battery is drained, allowing for passive listening minus the Bluetooth and noise-canceling features.

What about comfort and sound quality?

Despite the AH-NCW500's many features, you won't have to sacrifice sound quality or comfort. Denon's pentagon-shaped memory foam earpads and double-axis earcups are designed to provide long-lasting comfort, perfect for long flights. The AH-NCW500's 40mm dynamic drivers are powered by a built-in amplifier for bringing out the details in your music and giving them punch. You can even fine tune these headphones to your own taste with the free Denon Travel app for iPhone®/iPod® and Android™. The app includes a customizable graphic equalizer as well as easy integration with your music library. It even provides instant access to your favorite travel sites like TripAdvisor®, Kayak and FlightView® to keep you apprised of flight delays or help you find a last-minute hotel room.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

a really good buy, with excellent sound quality. Love the bluetooth and sound quality.

Pros: Quality, sound, shape

Cons: a bit heavy

Matt from New York, NY on 1/16/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I liked the look of these headphones and love denons sound usually. I thought that the other reviews saying that people around you can hear the headphones were possibly an overreaction, but even at low volume you can fully hear outside the headphones rendering them useless if you're not using them in a place where you're alone. I returned the item and got the parrot zik which I've been much happier with.

Pros: Comfortable fit Good sound

Cons: Others can hear completely Not noise reducing

Solid Product

JB from NJ on 1/11/2013

I am a frequent business traveler so having quality headphones is a must. My headphone use primarily revolves around listening to music and watching videos on my Ipad and also connecting to in flight entertainment. My Crutchfield buying experience was a pleasant one. I shopped online and easily found the headphones I was looking for. Unfortunately, the first pair of headphones that I received had a defective driver in the left ear but Crutchfield replaced them with no questions asked and sent a new pair to me via Air without getting the defective pair back first. Now, on to the headphone review. Sound quality is certainly outstanding which is expected from a premier audio company such as Denon. I would expect no less when paying the high dollar required for these. If you are an audiophile, you will notice a slight improvement in the hardwire connection versus Bluetooth but both methods produce great sound. The Noise Cancelling is on par with the other brands out there and may be slightly better than some in my opinion. It reduced background noise especially when listening to music but it is not going to provide you with complete solitude from a crying baby sitting in front of you. Nor would any other noise-canceling headphone. The Bluetooth Connection was easy to set up with no passwords required and the range was impressive. I left my Ipad in a seat pocket and visited the restroom on board the plane about 20 rows away with no loss in connection and listened to music while using the facilities was a treat These headphones offer Bluetooth Control over your devices via knobs on the side of the headphones which also worked in the restroom btw. They are effective and work well providing such things as volume control, pause and track skipping. Lastly, these are comfortable on the ear. Some Negatives to Point out: Price. I would certainly pay a top dollar for headphones but these seems excessive to me. There is simply too much competition to command this price point without offering more. That said, these still perform better than any other headphones I have tried in this premium audio category. Big and Bulky. These look big on my head and I have a pretty big head. They also do not fold well for frequent traveling. They ship with a nice carrying case with Karabiner but I don't need yet another thing to carry around with me. I would prefer these be foldable and more portable to fit in a briefcase. No Audio Control when hardwired. I appreciate the control via Bluetooth but at these prices, control should also be provided when hardwired to a device that does not offer Bluetooth such as inflight entertainment. USB is the only way to charge. This is probably fine for most people but I like the option to charge via outlet and not rely on other devices to be powered on to charge my headphones. All in All, I am enjoying my experience with these headphones and appreciate the fantastic sound quality.

Pros: Sound Quality, Easy Set-up, Bluetooth controls

Cons: Price, Big, USB charging only

Great Sound / Questionable Noise Cancelling

SH from Pendleton, IN on 12/2/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Denon Globe Cruiser Headphones. These headphones have excellent sound quality. Whether you are listening to music or talking on the phone they sound Great. Very clear and excellent bass. The Bluetooth functions all worked flawlessly and were easy to set up. The noise cancelling function seems to work but it's hard to tell how much external noise it reduces since it also boosts the volume of whatever you are listening to. The control functions for play, pause, volume, etc. work great, but only if you are using Bluetooth and not when the headphones are plugged in through the cord. The only other downside is that you have to charge them via USB which can plug into your phone or computer but you cannot listen to music through that connection.

Pros: sound quality, functionality

Cons: noise cancelling needs some improvement

Chef Chris from Sarasota Florida on 11/14/2012

I received my new headphones in the mail. I have been waiting a long time for this type of quality. I do a lot of live events as a Professional Chef and before I go on to demo, I get pumped with some music. I just tried these at an event today and I can usually hear the music and whats going on around me, but not this time:) amazing I got totally lost in the music and was more pumped than ever. These headphones are solid, yet really comfortable and the sound is awesome. A must buy!!! The connect-ability to different devices like going from my ipod to my iPhone is totally cool. I was listening to the music and a phone call came in so I didn't miss the call.

Pros: I love everything about my headphones:)

Not Worth The Price

Galleon from Horsham, PA on 10/4/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Volume knob is difficult to adjust (especially counterclockwise to lower the volume). It is very discomforting while on the go. During air travel, adjacent person loudly hears music coming out of the headphone; even at the low volume setting (I got few complaints already!) The Bluetooth pairing intermittently skipped music playback on my iPad. No DC Wall Charger (can only charge through laptop USB connector). Playback quality is average with minimum deep Bass. Doesn't come close in comparison with Bose NC Headphones. Well overpriced

Pros: Great Look and Aesthetics

Cons: Unreliable Controls with Average Sound Quality. Well Over Priced.

Overview: The Denon AH-NCW500 Globe Cruiser Bluetooth headphones are on-ear, noise-canceling headphones for use with a smartphone. The active noise canceling eliminates external noise so you can hear your conversation or music clearly. The AH-NCW500s come with a USB charging cable, a detachable audio cable, and airline adapter. It folds flat and stores in the supplied simulated leather carrying case.

Bluetooth: The AH-NCW500 Bluetooth Headphones feature Bluetooth 3.0 wireless connectivity so you can carry on your conversations without worrying about getting tangled up in a dangling cable. If you are unable to use the wireless connection or the rechargeable battery is exhausted, the supplied audio cable lets you continue to listen to your music. The headphones feature dual integrated microphones located in each earcup for clear phone conversations. The headphones also include aptX and AAC decoding for CD quality audio over the Bluetooth wireless connection.

Active Noise Canceling: The AH-NCW500's Noise Canceling circuitry subtly eliminates annoying sounds, such as the constant drone of a plane engine or the noise of the train on the tracks. You will still be able to hear emergency announcements or converse with other passengers. The Active Noise Canceling can be turned on or off by a toggle switch on the bottom of the left earcup.

Controls: The AH-NCW500s are equipped with Denon's patent-pending Control Wheel for controlling your phone calls and wireless music playback. The Control Wheel, located on the right earcup, mimics the operation of a conventional rotary control. To control the volume, the Control Wheel is rotated to the left or right. Music playback is controlled by pressing the center of the Control Wheel a specific number of times for each function. The controls are compatible with Apple iPhone and iPad, and other Bluetooth devices.

Note: The Control Wheel operates only for Bluetooth operation. The Bluetooth function turns off when you connect a device using the supplied audio cable.

Comfort: The AH-NCW500 headphones feature Denon's patent-pending Pentagonally-shaped memory foam ear pads for maximum comfort. The dual-axis earcups and adjustable padded headband provide for a perfect fit.

Rechargeable Battery: The headphones are powered by a 3.7-volt Lithium-Polymer rechargeable battery. The battery charges in approximately 2 hours via USB with the included USB charging cable. A fully charged battery provides the following continuous usage:

  • Bluetooth and Noise Canceling: 10 hours

the battery light will be green, It lasts for at least 1 hour on fully charged battery. Make sure you turn off the batter, by holding down the power up button until the red light flashes. [ Arti  Jan 08, 2014 ]
While charging two small red lights flash slowly on each side. They will e stop flashing when fully charged.Owner's manual is HERE - I did not seem to get a copy of manua in box . Quoting it - "Charge the headphone battery when first using it after purchase or when the battery level is low by connecting the headphones to a computer using the included USB cable. The LED indicator will flash when the battery is being charged. 0% to 49% charged : Slowly flashes red 50% to 99% charged : Flashes red every 2 seconds 100% charged : LED indicator turns off" Page 7 gives the table in color for all patterns from LEDs. Can battery leak? Yes. I would not store these in a hot place like a car or garage. Is it likely to leak? No. I have never had a lithium battery built into gear leak. They are not like alkaline batteries, which too frequently after a few years leak, [ PAUL  Dec 27, 2013 ]
