i have had the solo s2 for five years now and it has helped me many times
I was really excited to try out this new Escort radar detector, and was pretty sure that since it was an Escort product, that I really would not have any problems with it, and thus would live up to my expectations by a mile. Literally. But, after using the radar for about one full month, i really was not impressed at all. When I received the unit in the extremely appealing packaging, I thought that it was really going to blow me away with it being the first "fully-functional" battery operated detector. Really, I didn't even feel a gust. I was extremely excited when i first put the batteries in. I mounted it up just like the instructions said, turned it onto (City) mode, and took to the streets with my new Solo S2. It started chirping, and so just like every other person with a radar detector, i covered my brake, and slowed down. False alarm, but I was used to that with having a prior Cobra 9430. But, things got no better then that false alarm, seriously, that Cobra 9430 being a lower quality radar detector in my opinion out preformed this unit. I was in disbelief by this unit. One month later, I was still not satisfied so I sold the unit and pretty much made back what I paid for it. After, I purchased an Escort Passport 8500 x50, and seriously there was a HUGE difference. This unit did not even compare. Spend the extra cash and save yourself from being told where the cop is when he is sitting five feet away from you...
I do quite a bit of driving between South Florida and Orlando... and I was getting annoyed by my old Radar Detector always having the cord run over my A/C and Radio knobs. The Solo-2 seem like a pretty good leap into the 'Cordless' world. So... the good, the bad, and the ugly... 1) Good: cordless and pretty standard size 2) Bad: Battery Life supposedly lasts longer -- mine lasted just under 1 month 3) Ugly: the little suction cups on the unit don't really hold it on the window too well 4) Good: The detection (knock on wood) appears to be pretty decent 5) Bad: I've had a couple of false alerts - but I typically get that with any detector in known areas. Overall, my conclusion is that this is a pretty decent radar detector and the only real benefit (when compared with others) is that it provides the cordless capability. So until it can drive my car and fill my gass tank -- I'd continue to use the standard Cobra/whistlers out there. This one was a little too pricey for the benefits. But now I have a back up for my good ol' standby cobra! So my 2-Star rating is mainly for the cordless ability. A 5 Star rating would have been in order if it came with a solar panel that automatically recharged the battery while the car sat in the hot-sun! ... Hey, I can dream!
I like the cordless and good features and looks but oh how fragile. The headphone miniplug is made for a mono cord only, anything else will break it. My second one broke, no sound. The S2 false laser alarms were annoying enough to turn it off. I have passed a cop with a radar gun aimed at me and it never went off, even when someone behind me got pulled over. Beware of the expensive fragile battery.
I do a lot of business travel and find the portable aspect of this detector great. Batteries last quite a while. Picks up all bands very well except laser. More and more police agencies are using laser and I got nailed (again) this week and the unit never went off. In fact, the only times I ever get a laser warning are when I am passing a major airport (guess they use them to help direct in planes for landing) and for some reason the laser warning goes off when I receive a phone call on my Blackberry and am using a bluetooth headset.
I bought this particular model because i have 3 cars and so i needed something i could just grab and use in any of the vehicles. i've had it about a month, still using the same batteries and seems to work fairly well as far as picking up police cars.

High-Efficiency Power Management: The Solo S2's new power management circuit has been redesigned to give you the longest battery life possible. Solo S2 uses only a fraction of the power used by conventional corded detectors. Using 2 standard AA batteries (included), the Solo S2 provides months of normal driving protection. A new low-battery warning circuit keeps constant watch on the condition of the batteries, and provides you with both audible and visual alerts before they need to be replaced. They have also added a new AutoPower feature (programmable), which conserves battery life by automatically turning your Solo S2 off when not in use, and can even remind you to turn it back on once you start rolling again.
400% Better Range: The completely
redesigned Solo S2 provides long-range warning on all radar bands, including
conventional and "instant-on" X-band, K-band, and Superwide Ka-band.
Patented Digital Signal Processing (DSP) provides the longest warning possible
without constant false alarms. A new waveguide antenna, a new low-powered
digital receiver, and a high-speed microprocessor with Escort's proprietary
software, all run efficiently on just two standard AA batteries. The results are
impressive, including an astonishing 400% improvement in detection range on
Ka-band over other cordless radar detectors.
Ultra-Performance Laser Detection: The Solo S2 uses multiple low-noise laser sensors to provide long-range warning, and the widest field of view against laser encounters.
One Step Ahead: Speed measuring devices continue to improve through the use of new technology. Solo S2's innovative design allows the on-board microprocessor to be reprogrammed to detect new radar and laser units. While other manufacturers' models become obsolete, the Solo S2's software can be updated to protect you against the latest threats.
Note: The Solo S2 must be shipped to Escort for any reprogramming.
SmartShield VG-2 Protection: If the VG-2 band is turned on, VG-2 units will be detected with an audible and visual alert. Once detected, Solo S2's internal oscillator will shut down for a period of time, making it undetectable. The oscillator will then periodically turn back on to see if the VG-2 unit is still present.
Safety Radar Signals: Solo S2 provides unique audible and visual alerts for Safety Warning System (SWS) signals. These alerts (up to 64 messages) will keep you informed of road hazards in areas using this technology.
High-Resolution Graphic LCD: A new, brilliant LCD makes the Solo S2 radar and laser detector intuitive to use, and easy to understand. Each radar, laser and SWS signal is identified and communicated to you with clear messages. Signal strength is provided using three different types of meters (programmable), while the backlit display automatically adjusts for optimum viewing.
Signal Strength Meter: The alphanumeric graphic display provides an intuitive display of signal strength and text messages. The standard bar-graph signal strength meter only displays information on a single radar signal. If there are multiple signals present, the internal computer determines which is the most important threat to show on the bar-graph meter.
ExpertMeter: Solo S2's ExpertMeter simultaneously tracks up to 8 radar signals. It shows you detailed information on up to 2 Ka-band, 2 K-band and 4 X-band signals.
Brightness Control: The Solo S2 provides four levels of brightness including Automatic, Minimum, Medium, Maximum and Dark. The Automatic setting adjusts the brightness automatically based on the ambient light in your vehicle. In the Dark mode, the display will not provide any visual alerts when it detects a signal. Only an audible alert will be heard.
Audible Alerts: When you encounter radar, a distinct audible alert will sound and increase in rate as the signal gets closer. When the signal is very strong, the audible alert will blend into a solid tone. Since laser signals are a possible threat no matter how weak, the Solo S2 alerts you to all laser signals with a full laser alert.
AutoSensitivity Mode: The AutoSensitivity mode provides long-range warning, while virtually eliminating false alarms. In this mode, the Solo S2's internal computer continuously analyzes all incoming signals and intelligently determines which signals are real threats.
Mute: The Mute button allows you to silence the audio alert during a radar encounter.
AutoMute: After the Solo S2 alerts you to a radar encounter at the volume you have selected, the AutoMute feature will automatically reduce the volume to a lower level.
SmartMute: Once a specific signal has been muted, Escort's exclusive SmartMute feature will intelligently prioritize any additional signals by band. If a new signal is detected, and it is a higher priority band than the muted one, the Solo S2 will alert you at the preset volume you selected.
Low Battery Warning: Once the batteries reach a specific voltage level, the Solo S2 will provide a low-battery warning. This warning consists of an audible alert, along with a corresponding message.
AutoPower: To conserve battery life, the Solo S2 will automatically go to "sleep" after the vehicle has stopped moving for 30 minutes. If the vehicle starts to move within the next 30 minutes, your Solo S2 will "wake up" and prompt you, both visually and audibly, to see if you want it back on. If you do not press a button within 15 seconds of the prompt, the detector will shut down completely.
Programmable Features: The Solo S2 packs 9 user programmable features, allowing you to customize it for your specific driving style. Your preferred settings are stored in memory, even when you replace batteries. You can adjust the following: Contrast, Auto Power, Power-on Sequence, Signal Strength Meter, AutoMute, Audio Tones, City Mode Sensitivity, Brightness and which bands are active.
SmartCord Compatible: For 12-volt operation, you can use an optional SmartCord. The SmartCord is a unique power cord that has a power-on indicator, an alert lamp that warns you of radar and laser, and a convenient mute button on the lighter plug.
Mounting: Using the supplied EasyMount bracket, the Solo S2 can be mounted on your vehicle's windshield. The EasyMount bracket has 4 position settings, allowing you to choose the position that best fits the angle of your vehicle's windshield.
