Keep the juice flowing
The Solo S3 features an advanced high-efficiency battery design that consumes only a fraction of the power used by conventional corded detectors. Slip in the included pair of "AA" batteries and enjoy months of protection with normal driving use. A low-battery warning circuit gives you audible and visual alerts before the batteries need to be replaced. The programmable AutoPower feature shuts off the detector when not in use to further conserve battery life so the Solo S3 will perform when you need it most.

Understand the threats
The Solo S3's brilliant, easy-to-read display presents all the information you need quickly and without confusion. The graphic signal strength meters give you an idea of the threat's proximity, while text messages convey urgent messages. Sensitivity modes keep the false alerts to a minimum, while different mute settings let you keep things quiet. The Solo S3 features nine programmable features for convenient customization — and it'll remember your presets when you change the detector's batteries.

Solo S3

Matt W from Minnesota on 1/13/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Both range and filtering are excellent but it should have GPS to identify the location of false alarms I drive by daily for the price I paid.

Pros: No cord and decent battery life

Michael from Oregon on 8/28/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had the original Solo that lasted forever without a single problem (20 years +). Gave the old one to my daughter who now uses it. On 'highway mode' the amount of warning is crazy good. Most times a mile or two depending on if it is instant on, or continuous KA bans favored by the CHP and OSP on the west coast. Never a false from this band length. There was a 1 star review by someone here claiming it wouldn't go off till he was right on top of the source. He obviously did not read the directions or never owned a detector (and had it set to 'city mode' or 'auto'. When I am on the highway, I want it to be as sensitive as possible. There is plenty of warning for Laser too. If there is enough traffic that he is randomly shooting other cars and trucks in front, it picks up the random signal with an attention getting urgency from the Solo. The design is very sleek and modern. The size is very thin and not in the least bit bulky. This is important to me because I place my detectors as high in the center of the windshield as possible (next to the rear view mirror). For a better look down the road in front of me and better reception through the rear window for the rear facing antenna! The thing is just as sensitive for radar coming up from behind you. OK, one complaint. The suction cup mount is the same as the original of 20+ years ago. The small cups take several tries to gain enough purchase to not fall off. But this can be remedied by the heavy duty cup if you choose!

Pros: Size, sensitivity, ease of use, front and rear protection and built like a tank for longevity. Excellent customer service as always from Escort!

Cons: Funky and small suction cups on the supplied windshield bracket.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This current purchase represents my 5th & 6th Escort product, starting with the very first Escort. the Solo 3 may not have the range/distance of a hardwired detector, but for a fast, clean installation & easy movement from vehicle to vehicle it can not be beat. it is easy to use & ready to go right out of the box.

Pros: escort products have proven to be very reliable. (do not break down) Escort products have been proven to be very reliable. Escort products have proven to perform as advertized. Solo 2 & Solo 3 are easy to use. Solo 3 is better at false signals & the display is easier to read battery life is about 4 to 6 weeks + no electrical wires hanging in your view & no hardwareing nesassary easy to position any where on the windscreen

Cons: You need to replace batteries

This is second escort solo

The solo detectors are excellent , I have learned using lithium ion batteries gives the best battery longevity.

Pros: Excellent detector, plenty of warning time, no wires

Cons: None

Outstanding Product

JeremyP from Atlanta, GA on 1/20/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fourth Escort product I have owned over the years, and they just seem to keep getting better! The ease of the Solo in placement, with no cord to hide or have to hard-wire and the ability to move from my car to my wifes so effortlessly is such a plus. There dont seem to be too many "false alarms", especially over my old 6800 this unit is replacing. Reviews seemed to all be good before buying, and Crutchfields price could not be beat! Only issue I can see, is the bettery life isnt the best. Supposedly there is a low battery warning, so it wont just die on you, but Im not quite there yet so I cant attest to that. Display on this unit is stellar! Other than that, I could not be happier!

Pros: No cord, very few false alerts, ease of moving from vehicle to vehicle

Cons: Battery life isnt the best

Escort Solo 3

Steve from Ohio on 1/17/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice display, much more visible than previous model the Solo 2. Good x and k band sensitivity, however, ka band not as good as corded Escort models. Around town at lower speeds the Ka range is adequate, but at higher speeds the range may not be enough under some circumstances. I use it mostly for suburban driving so it works fine for me.

Pros: Seems well made and display very visible except under really bright sunlight conditions. Good x and k band range. Plenty of volume.

Cons: Ka band range lacking for faster highway speeds under some conditions, i.e. instant on radar.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had numerous radar detectors but the Solo S3 is by far the most complete and provides de best coverage on a cordless detector.

Pros: High Tech but easy to use Clean Windshield Expert Meter

Cons: Sometimes it seems the unit is off during daylight because you cant see the power on indicator on

Cons: none

Escort Solo S3

JerryQ from Albany, NY on 8/9/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First and formost it is important to understand that the S3 model has been updated at least 3 times in the last few years so if you want the latest and best you need to buy from a reputable dealer that has up to date inventory. That being said, so far the unit I have has performed as expected. It has less annoyance alarms than my prevoius one in the "auto" mode. I am on the road approximately 3 hour a day and the first set of batteries lasted about 3 weeks.

Pros: Small, compact, battery operated so no wires, easily stored or transported.

Cons: Other than the price, none.

good unit

Gary from Philadelphia.PA on 5/24/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product, no problems thus far

Pros: easy to use

Cons: in line controls

Poor Design

Keith from Miami on 6/27/2012

Poor design, batteries fade quickly, at highway speeds warning is behind the curve and you will get nailed. Batteries compartment poor design, batteries bounce loose during driving turning unit off and you willl also get nailed because the unit if off and you will not know this. Put cardboard spacer between batteries to keep them in place after. Large and out of date with modern electronic capabilities. Overpriced.

Pros: Cordless. Nice display

Cons: See review

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

has very few false alarms always around the same area, far less than what i am used to. not having the power cord makes it so much more convenient. i went by a few police cars without even a peep but maybe bc those guys were snoozing or not checking for speeders to begin with.

Pros: neat convenient cordless operation

Cons: still occasional false alarms

Great unit

MK from Cherry hill NJ on 2/12/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worth the money, sits clean on the dash no cords, is better on batteries then I thought it would be, I go about 1 bar every 1.5 to 2 weeks, theres 4 bars on the battery indicator and I have it on for about 2-3 hours a day,6-7 days a week. Detects radar and laser in enough time to slow down. I am very happy with the unit

Escort Solo S3

JohnK from Leawood, Kansas on 9/27/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far, this detector has shown to be sensitive and accurate, without the nuisance of a power cord running down the dash.

Good but....

Todd from South Florida on 6/13/2011

The S3 picks up lots of false alarms from radar operated doors in commerical buidlings, this gets real tedious, however you can switch the sensitivity on it. Small and fits on the dash nice and clean without power cord. I do not go over the speed limit by much, so this unit gives me ample warning time.

So far so good, nice quality and it works well. Battery life appears to be excellent, and no cord across the dash is awesome!!

Just like the SOLO S2 I had before except better display. Haven't experienced long distance driving yet so can't tell if the sensitivity has improved or not.

S3 Cordless Detector Good But... It's No Passport 9500ix

Ed from South Florida on 5/2/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Drove to Pittburgh along several interstates and some small State roads. It picked off the Troopers well in advance, but regularily beeped inaccurate laser radar. From what I can tell, you can turn down the volume for all regular radar guns, but not a laser gun. For the money, purchase the Passport 9500ix which is ~ $100.00 more (sometimes they run a price reduction on the unit), it's much better at reducing false alarms and can notify you of red light cameras. By the way, I am speaking from experience, since I originally purchased a Passport 9500ix; but unfortunately, it was stolen at a carwash while I was out of my vehicle (duriung a detail).

Inputs and Outputs

Cordless Radar Detector: The Escort Solo S3 provides superior protection from radar and laser encounters with the convenience and portability of a cordless detector. The Solo S3 operates on two "AA" batteries (supplied).

High-Efficiency Battery Design: The Solo S3 is designed to give you the longest battery life possible, and uses only a fraction of the power used by conventional corded detectors. The Solo S3 keeps constant watch on the condition of the batteries, and provides you with both audible and visual alerts before they need to be replaced.

AutoPower: The programmable AutoPower feature conserves battery life by automatically causing the Solo S3 to "go to sleep" after the vehicle has stopped moving for 25 minutes. If the vehicle starts moving within the next 30 minutes, the unit will "wake up" and prompt you visually and audibly to see if you want it back on. If you do not respond within 15 seconds, the unit will shut down completely.

Long-Range Radar Detection: The Solo S3 provides long-range warning on all radar bands including conventional and "instant on" X-Band, K-band, and Superwide Ka-band. Digital Signal Processing provides the longest warning possible without constant false alarm.

Ultra-Performance Laser Detection: The Solo S3 uses multiple low-noise laser sensors to provide long-range warning, and the widest field of view against laser encounters.

Programmable Features: There are 9 user-selectable options so you can customize the Solo S3 for your own preferences. The options include:

  • Pilot Light: Program the unit's display from full description, letter, letter with scanning dot, symbol, symbol with scanning dot, or scanning signal.
  • Auto Power: Select Auto Power modes--motion, time, or off.
  • Power-on Sequence: Select standard or fast power-on
  • Signal Strength Meter: Select standard or expert meter (see description below)
  • Auto Mute: Turn on or off
  • Audio Tones: Choose standard or loud tones
  • City Mode Sensitivity: Set to Standard, Low X-band, or No X-band city mode
  • Brightness: Set the brightness to auto (based on ambient light), minimum, medium, maximum, or dark
  • Bands: You can set the radar and laser bands to: Default (all bands monitored), X-band on, K-band on, Ka-band on, Laser on, SWS off, VG2 off, or Modify (turning off unused bands).

High-Resolution Graphic OLED Display: A new, brilliant OLED display makes the Solo S3 intuitive to use, and easy to understand. Each radar, laser and SWS signal is identified and communicated to you with clear messages. Signal strength is provided using two different types of meters (programmable), while the backlit display automatically adjusts for optimum viewing.

SmartShield VG-2 Protection: If the VG-2 band is turned on, VG-2 units (radar detector detectors) will be detected with an audible and visual alert. Once detected, Solo S3's internal oscillator will shut down for a period of time, making it undetectable. The oscillator will then periodically turn back on to see if the VG-2 unit is still present.

Safety Radar Signals: The Solo S3 provides unique audible and visual alerts for Safety Warning System (SWS) signals. These alerts (up to 64 messages) will keep you informed of road hazards in areas using this technology.

Signal Strength Meters: The Solo S3 gives you the option of two signal strength meters:

  • Standard: The standard alphanumeric graphic display provides an intuitive display of signal strength and text messages. The standard bar-graph signal strength meter only displays information on a single radar signal. If there are multiple signals present, the internal computer determines which is the most important threat to show on the bar-graph meter.
  • ExpertMeter: The ExpertMeter simultaneously tracks up to 8 radar signals, and shows you detailed information on up to 2 Ka-band, 2 K-band and 4 X-band signals.

Brightness Control: The Solo S3 provides four levels of brightness including Automatic, Minimum, Medium, Maximum and Dark. The Automatic setting adjusts the brightness automatically based on the ambient light in your vehicle. In the Dark mode, the display will not provide any visual alerts when it detects a signal. Only an audible alert will be heard.

Audible Alerts: When you encounter radar, a distinct audible alert will sound and increase in rate as the signal gets closer. When the signal is very strong, the audible alert will blend into a solid tone. Since laser signals are a possible threat no matter how weak, the Solo S3 alerts you to all laser signals with a full laser alert.

AutoSensitivity Mode: The AutoSensitivity mode provides long-range warning, while virtually eliminating false alarms. In this mode, the Solo S3's internal computer continuously analyzes all incoming signals and intelligently determines which signals are real threats.

Mute: The Mute button allows you to silence the audio alert during a radar encounter. The mute button is mounted right on the top of the unit within easy reach.

AutoMute: After the Solo S3 alerts you to a radar encounter at the volume you have selected, the AutoMute feature will automatically reduce the volume to a lower level.

SmartMute: Once a specific signal has been muted, Escort's exclusive SmartMute feature will intelligently prioritize any additional signals by band. If a new signal is detected, and it is a higher priority band than the muted one, the Solo S3 will alert you at the preset volume you selected.

Low Battery Warning: Once the batteries reach a specific voltage level, the Solo S3 will provide a low-battery warning. This warning consists of an audible alert, along with a corresponding message.

SmartCord Compatible: For 12-volt operation, you can use an optional SmartCord. The SmartCord is a unique power cord that has a power-on indicator, an alert lamp that warns you of radar and laser, and a convenient mute button on the lighter plug. The Solo S3 has an RJ11 telephone-type jack for plugging in the SmartCord.

Mounting: Using the supplied EasyMount suction cup bracket, the Solo S3 can be mounted on your vehicle's windshield. The EasyMount bracket has 4 position settings, allowing you to choose the position that best fits the angle of your vehicle's windshield.

Travel Case: The Solo S3 comes in a semi-hard travel case with elastic bands that hold the detector, the EasyMount bracket, and extra suction cups.

I use the S3 on my Kawasaki Ninja, & my Chev. Monte Carlo... I use the suction cup brackets on both. (That come with the unit & I bought an extra one). I have two sets of the brackets. One for the bike & one for the car. (so I don't have to remove & re-install each time I use it.) The two suction cups hold very well. Just an occasional push on the cups themselves to remove the air bubbles seem to work. I've never had them fall off yet so it works. The metal part of the bracket you can bend to adjust your angle. Almost any angle you will need. They stay in place & they hold. I don't see any problem putting it on the Jeep. Just adjust you metal tab to your needed angle I forget about it. [ Richard  Sep 07, 2016 ]
Being a former jeep owner. You hand bend the metal. For the angle. Or put a some Velcro to the bottom of the mirror and another in the top of the passport. This is what I'm thinking of doing with mine for my challenger. Because in the heat the suction cups just don't hold. [ Shay  Sep 06, 2016 ]
Yes the mount can be adjusted for a flat windshield but the suction cups might not hold up under extreme roads. [ raymond  Sep 06, 2016 ]
It is both... You can use 2 AA batteries or you can purchase the smart cord which gives you some additional features. I go wireless because I use it primarily on my motorcycle. [ Richard  Jun 07, 2016 ]
It is just battery. It is a great unit. [ Michael  Jun 07, 2016 ]
Out of the box it uses 2 AA batteries. I think there are kits online to make it a hardwired unit, but I don't have one of those. [ John  Jun 07, 2016 ]
An optional hard wire is(was) available. It connects to the wiring in the mirror that is used for on star etc. [ gary  Jun 07, 2016 ]
