Our take on the AKG Y50BT

AKG Y50BT On-ear Bluetooth headphones

The ultra-portable AKG Y50BT Bluetooth headphones are available in three colors

Striking sound, portable design, and wireless convenience

The AKG Y50BT Bluetooth headphones sport the same look and compact on-ear design as AKG's Y50 headphones, their wired siblings. But they make listening on the move even more care-free. These lightweight, comfortable 'phones play music wirelessly from your Bluetooth-enabled device.

And you don't have to sacrifice sound quality — AKG knows all about how to make things sound good. In fact, many of the top recording studios use AKG gear. These Bluetooth headphones boast the same soundstage as the wired version. It's a sound that's been well-received by our customers. And my co-worker Dave Brown called, "clear and dynamic, with a little extra punch in the bass frequencies."

Simple on-ear controls and 20 hours of battery life

Right after sound quality, AKG's other priority was making these headphones easy to use on the go. The earcups swivel and fold for easy storage in the included case. And you get up to 20 hours of wireless music playback on a full charge. While listening, you can use the on-ear controls to pause and skip tracks, adjust the volume, and even answer calls through the built-in mic.

Wired listening when needed

If you're in a situation that doesn't call for wireless, you can use the included cable. Connect these headphones to any 3.5mm headphone jack on a smartphone, tablet, or other device and listen without using the battery.

Long search, happy ending

Matthew from Wisconsin on 1/21/2018

Finally got tired of shopping around for a good bluetooth pair of headphones. Both the wife and daughter have some inexpensive phones that aren't at all bad. Not really for close music listening, so after watching and reading reviews, I decided to try these. First of all, the build quality is excellent. Yes, that's actual aluminum and the padding is soft and very comfortable. The pairing to devices (my phone and desktop) was quick and painless. The range is very, very good, too. I made it every level our home while leaving my phone in the kitchen, although we don't have a large home. No cut outs or skips. The buttons are easy to get used to. The most important thing, of course, is the sound quality. I have some Grado 60s which are an open, on ear phone, wired set. They are very good. Listening on the AKG's provides a more 'present' sound, however, partly due to the closed design, but also the phones themselves. As other reviewers have said, it's mostly a flat sound, although I would say that the bass is richer than I was anticipating. I really wanted to avoid the Beats, over bass thing, and these do the trick, yet still provide adequate, clean bass. Not a drop of mud, and I haven't even burned them in yet. You can really hear what's going on with the music, as they are well balanced. Bear in mind, I have hearing loss, but a lot of background noise is substantially muted with these. I haven't tried ANC phones in a while, but I like isolating phones like these.

Very happy with the AKG Y50BT. I like the clarity, battery life, weight and of the feel of the product. The Bluetooth range surprised me. I had my phone in my room and had to go the kitchen and the garage. No signal loss, well, not until I got to the other end of the garage. That's awesome considering there were several walls.

Bought as a gift to my two sons. We looked past the "marketing' of Beats and Bose. This product gave us exactly what we needed at a fair price. Very happy with the product and the purchase. Would recommend.

The best headphones for your money, the AKG y50bt amazing spectrom, beyond 20hz to 20khz, sweet!!!!!!!

Pros: The battery lasted me 17 hours for my initial use, I would say these are easily the best headphones you can buy for this price.

Cons:

Worth 3x the amount paid

John from Honolulu, HI on 12/6/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome! The battery lasted me 17 hours for my initial use. This is more than enough. Seriously, when do you ever listen to that much music or whatever? In other words, enough for the longest of flights. Build quality seems nice. Just enough padding to block out a lot of noise but not keep you totally in the dark as to your surroundings. That same padding makes them very comfortable. Oh, about that battery, should you find yourself sans battery you can use the provided cable & connect directly to your device. So, two headphones for the price of one. As to the price I would say these are easily the best headphones you can buy for this price. I would actually argue these are the best headphones you can buy for double the price. Sound quality is excellent. They are good in all areas to me & I am very picky. I want bass but not head pounding bass. I want highs & mids to shine thru but not be tin can like or distorted. Volume level seems to be good so far. I have burned them in for about 30 hours so far & they are settling in very nicely. I only have one complaint & it has to do with the design. The headphones swivel & can lay flat. They do not swivel 360 or turn both ways. The problem is if you wear them as marked (left-right) they only swivel with the ear cup facing out. One would think AKG would want the logo facing out & I want it so that nothing gets in the ear cup as I walk while not using said headphones. That's just me being picky about otherwise great sounding headphones

Pros: Great Sound Long Battery Life Cable Bypass (provided) Comfortable

Cons: Swivel design has them face out instead of in. (Minor & me being picky)

Awesome bluetooth headphone!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a good bluetooth headset that I could listen to my music and talk on the phone for work. These headphones work great for both applications, and I highly recommend this product to anyone who is looking for the same qualities.

Pros: Loud and clear when either listening to your music or talking on the phone. Clear highs and deep bass. The control interface on the headphone are very easy to use.

Very nice headphones

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good sound from these on-ear phones and they're very comfortable to wear. Ear cushions provide plenty of padding and also isolate sounds well. I only gave 4 stars for "cool factor" because that's really a complete non-issue for me. As for noise reduction, these aren't intended to reduce noise actively but do a good job of keeping out moderate levels of ambient noise thanks to the cushioning.

Pros: Good sound quality comfortable

Cons: none, really

Incredible sound. Very few caveats

jh from Hoboken NJ on 3/25/2016

The AKG Y50BT have an incredible sound, as to be expected from AKG headphones. Especially impressive considering that we're using BT to listen to music and movies. The highs are well rounded and the lows come out nice and clean. The pair would have gotten a clean 5 stars if there weren't minor issues that took away from the superior experience of the product: 1. The pouch is sub-standard, especially considering the high quality feel of the AKG Y50BT themselves 2. When folded in, the HP tend to turn themselves on, due to a less than ideal placement of the power button, right at the junction between the two ear pieces 3. The blue BT status light blinks when connected. Why?! When listening at night, this can be annoying 4. The AKG Y50BT are on the heavier side. At least it feels like it over prolonged period of times. This might be a common denominator between BT headphones. This is my first set. Apart from the points above, I'm very happy with the headphones. I care mostly about the sound quality and had a chance to compare these to the more than twice as expensive Parrot headphones the first day. There is no comparison! AKG Y50BT are way superior for any kind of music. If you worry about the pouch/transportation issue. You buy hard cases in various places on the internet. That solves problem 1&2 Enjoy!

Pros: - Sound, Sound, Sound!! - Battery life - Quality and feel - Stable BT connection

Cons: - Pouch cheap - Blinking BT light

I've found them to be well balanced when paired with my iPhone. I use them to listen to streaming music while I'm out walking and they sound fine with that source quality. They dont exhibit the over accentuated bass of Beats and some other brands. I have not tried them with higher quality source material though, so if you are planning to use them for more critical listening it might be good to get the opinion of someone who has. I can add that despite being somewhat bulky they are pretty comfortable. [ David Mulford  Oct 22, 2016 ]
The AKG Y50BT headphones do not include removable/interchangeable earpads; they come permanently attached. I hope that helps! [ Larry  Oct 21, 2016 ]  Staff
The advertised battery life is 10 hours I think. I've used them a total of 8 hours before charge. The only fault I have with these phones is there is no battery indicter so if you use them multiple sessions you have to keep count of to usage time. I usually charge them after three 2 to 3 hour sessions [ Roynnell  Oct 20, 2016 ]
it was for my son --- but he said it lasts 'a long time' and usually critical of battery life [ Ronald  Oct 18, 2016 ]
The brand specify 20 hrs, i didnt check it but i use it for a long periods in travels without need recharge it [ JoseAntonio  Oct 18, 2016 ]
I bought these back in May or June 2016 and only charge them once in September. It's October now and the head phone battery life not even halfway as yet. Battery life and sound quality are perfect. I definitely recommend them. Hope I was helpful. [ Kevern  Oct 17, 2016 ]
Hi, I haven't really measured this or checked, but they last a long time. I'm very pleased with battery life and love these headphones, they sound great. [ Andrew  Oct 17, 2016 ]
If the ps4 has Bluetooth, it should connect. [ james  Aug 19, 2017 ]
I'm not sure if it will connect via Bluetooth. Maybe u can try the auxiliary cord and see if that works. [ Kevern  Aug 19, 2017 ]
Hi Nikki - I own the AKG headphones but not a PS4 system; however, the headphones are compatible w/ BT v. 3, a standard wireless protocol and also a wired input using a 3.5 mm mini-stereo - 2.5 mm sub-mini adaptor to the phones. So, if the PS4 outputs in BT or wired, then the AKG product should work fine. Dave [ G  Aug 18, 2017 ]
