Overview

Our take on the AKG Y 50

When I first saw the AKG Y 50 headphones in our vendor training room, they caught me a little off guard. Most of their headphones feature styling that's more muted. That's no surprise, as AKG always puts sound quality first. But the Y 50 headphones flash a little more color and sport an oversized logo. With over 65 years of audio excellence under their belt, AKG has a right to be loud and proud. That doesn't mean these headphones are all style, no substance. Their 40mm drivers deliver clear, dynamic sound with a little extra punch in the bass frequencies. The compact on-ear design is ideal for on-the-go listening as well as being extremely comfortable. Prefer something more understated? They're available in all-black, too.

Headphones are great. Only reason a 4 rating is the top band of headphones don't have much padding making them hard to wear for periods of time.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think these are great headphones, especially for the price. I purchased a pair for myself, then my daughter was looking for headphones, so I had her try mine. She was thinking about Dr. Dre's, but after wearing mine for a while she asked me to order these for her. Great product.

Pros: Great sound Comfortable Awesome Price

Cons: None

Good for the money, but...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these due to the great reviews I've read. And I'd agree with that they are a great headphone for the price. Sound clarity is quite good. Pretty sharp looking (for the black ones). Seemed well built. The bass seemed a little too artificial to me. I guess AKG is trying to enhance the bass due to it being considered a "portable" headphone. I don't know that I would consider them that portable. Yes, they do partially fold up, but the cans are larger than I was expecting. But my biggest complaint would be how tight they fit. They really clamp down. I couldn't wear them more than 30 minutes and I actually was ready to take them off after about 10-15. They appear to have plenty of padding and feel soft to the touch but didn't translate to them on my head. If it wasn't for this issue I probably would've kept them. Despite this, I can understand the positive reviews these have received and are a solid headphone at this price point.

Pros: Sound quality Build

Cons: Comfort

Q & A

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

because of the frequency response...I play bass in a church band and can not use ear buds because of canal infections, so I need phones, and needed a low end response for a 6 string bass...I believe from the review this pair will be what I need, as well as have used AKG sound equipment over the years and they never failed. [ Herb  Oct 09, 2017 ]
Great sound quality for an affordable price! [ mark  Mar 15, 2016 ]
The styling and the reviews. [ Titus D.  Feb 01, 2016 ]

1 question already asked

I purchased the same headphones in teal, so I can confirm that is true. The jack that plugs into the headphones is smaller than the side that plugs into the audio source. Therefore, you can't use just any audio cable. Hope that helps. [ Tatyana  Sep 12, 2016 ]
Actually I have the k451s but the headphone jack is smaller than a 3.5mm. I'm assuming they carried that to the y50s [ Dale  Sep 12, 2016 ]
That's true. The end that plugs into the headphone is smaller than a 3.5mm. [ Dale  Sep 12, 2016 ]
