Our take on the Toshiba 37HL67

You'll find the REGZA badge on Toshiba's best-performing LCD HDTVs — like the 37" 37HL67. Back in January at the Consumer Electronics Show, TV makers showed off the latest picture-enhancing technologies and user-friendly features, and Toshiba led the way. The 37HL67's screen is big enough for a modest home theater, yet its cabinet is sleek and compact enough for a bedroom. The glossy black bezel helps the screen's sharp, vivid images leap off the screen.

You'll find the REGZA badge on Toshiba's best-performing LCD HDTVs — like the 37" 37HL67. The 37HL67's screen is big enough for a modest home theater, yet its cabinet is sleek and compact enough for a bedroom. The glossy black bezel helps the screen's sharp, vivid images leap off the screen.

The 37HL67 gives you so many ways to enjoy a great picture. Its built-in tuners pull in all types of local over-the-air broadcasts, from ordinary analog to digital high-definition (antenna required). And a "QAM" cable tuner enables you to watch unscrambled digital cable channels, including HD.

Crisp, clear pictures, no matter what you feed it
Many viewers will continue watching analog and other lower-resolution signals right up until the scheduled analog shut-off in 2009 — and maybe beyond. Toshiba's sophisticated digital video processing circuitry does a great job of cleaning up these signals. While some TV makers are still using 8-bit processing, Toshiba's latest PixelPure system uses much more powerful 14-bit processing. Also, Toshiba's DynaLight dynamic backlighting system monitors the brightness level of the video signal and adjusts backlight intensity to maximize picture contrast.

Future-ready connections, including 3 HDMI inputs
The 37HL67's audio/video connections include composite, S-video, and component video jacks, plus three HDMI digital inputs for use with the growing number of HDMI-equipped components (like HD satellite receivers and upconverting DVD players). A standard computer input makes it easy to connect your laptop PC so you can have a bigger view for working, gaming or web-surfing.

Almost perfect

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace a 32" Samsung in our bedroom that we moved to the Grand Kids room. Great Pic and really good sound. ( the Samy 's sound is horrible by the way) I have only 2 complaints. There is only one RF input. You have to either choose to feed it an OTA antenna for the ATSC tuner or Cable to use the QAM. ( at least the Samsung had two and you could switch with the Remote ) This probably isn't too big a deal for most people. The other thing is the remote. It has a slide switch instead of buttons to select operation of DVD, VHS, etc. It's a pain to to move this tiny switch back an forth. Other than that, I'm very happy with this TV.

Great TV for the money. This is my first flat screen TV and i am very happy with the quality of the picture. The sound is ok, clear but is a little on the low side but the picture quality is amazing. All in all it is a great tv for a great price.

Best 37" LCD out there

Kirk from Cincinnati, OH on 2/10/2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the best 37" LCD tv out there. If this is the size you it. Picture is amazing right out of the box before any tweaking. I have mine hooked up to Warner Cable Hi-Def box with a HDMI cable and a Sony progressive scan DVD with a HDMI cable. The picture is amazing! The manual is a little thick, but you have a multitude of tweaking options, so just take your time. As usual, Crutchfield was great. I ordered mine on-line on a Monday and it was delivered on Wednesday with no problems.

Very Pleased

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Initially, I wanted to return this HD LCD tv because the picture was, in a word, awful. It turns out that the CATV cable I used was the culprit. I experienced increasing picture quality as I moved from SVHS to component to HDMI cabling. The video through HDMI with an HD digital cable source is nothing short of outstanding. The colors are very realistic, brilliant at times and eye catching. Clarity and definition are also remarkable. Viewing angle is such that you can look at this set from a sharp angle and still see a good picture. Many SDTV channels look nearly HD in quality so this is the set to get if you primarily watch SDTV. 480p DVD looks sharp and clear although color quality varies across DVDs. It is hard to believe that there are other HD tvs out there with better picture quality. The universal remote is easy to use. As with most tvs with this much technology, you will have to spend some time reading through the manual and testing out various settings to get your preferred settings. Some are a bit arcane, eg, gamma, and their function is not easily discernible. Even the set's advertised feature, DynaLight, does not appear to affect the picture quality much no matter what the setting (but I'm not done playing with it). The wide screen settings are such that some of the onscreen letters are cut off but I'm not sure this is a problem with the set or the cable signal. The set has plenty of inputs including 3 HDMI. Audio quality is good although you will need an external audio system to get the best sound. The bottom line: I couldn't be happier with this tv that I got for an excellent Crutchfield price.

Excellent tuner

John from Temperance Michigan on 1/13/2008

This TV has a great tuner. It picks up twice as many HD station as my Sony that is hooked up to the same antenna. I have a Channel Master antenna on a 50 foot tower. The picture is good and the sound quality is good in my application. Over all I am extremely happy with this purchase. My main concern was the reception because I do not have access to cable in my area so I rely on a tower for off the air reception. Crutchfield's service was exceptional as always. I received my order in 3 days even though I placed my order on a holiday

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been patiently waiting for the prices on LCD TV's to drop and it was worth the wait. This TV is well worth the asking price, it is really an amazing TV. The picture clarity is really great, especially when using HDMI cables and is the perfect size TV for my living room. I got it just in time for the football playoff season and couldn't be happier with the TV. It is not very difficult at all to hook up and is very light weight (under 50 pounds). If you're looking for a great HDTV under $1000, then this is the one for you!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield scores for me again! This flat screen is the best out there from 32-40 inch. The color and sharpness in HD and analog wonderful. NFL games without ANY distortion. Setup was a breeze. DVD up conversion looked near HD. Price and service was outstanding as usual. Even if I was disappointed Crutchfield returns are a breeze as I found out few years ago. GO GET ONE.

Toshiba 37HL67

John from Brogue, PA on 11/24/2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did a lot of research on HDTV's before this purchase. I have a space limitation too. This TV replaced an old 32" Toshiba that lasted more than 11 years. I was very happy with the old set. I was blown away by the 37HL67 Toshiba. The picture is stunning. DirecTV, DVD, over the air HD and SD all look great. The Tuners are very strong and pull in weak signals that I was never able to receive before. If this set fits your space and viewing area requirements, buy it. I promise that you will be happy with your purchase.

Best Size for the Buck

Greg from New Rochelle, NY on 11/20/2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After researching TV's for quite sometime and pondering which TV was the best for the space of my LR without spending a small fortune the Toshiba 37HL67 was a smart choice. The picture has a excellent clarity on HD channels as well as DVD movies. Even standard cable signals look great. All I have to say is glad I made the purchase.

excellent tv

joe from lavista ne on 11/9/2007

this is my first LCD TV. I had been wanting a 37" panasonic plasma, but they quit making them, so I went with this model. i have a 26" widescreen CRT toshiba that has an excellent picture, and i have to tell you, this TV is awesome as well. I dont have HD cable, but i am able to pick up 3 hd channels without an antenna, and they look awesome. the SD channels look really good as well. I have had people over and they cannot believe how great the picture looks with a SD signal. you will love this tv. I looked at the cheaper TV's, pay the extra, you will absolutely love it. the color and picture on those others cannot even come close to this TV.

Solid Performer/Great Picture

Jefferson from Robeson Township, PA on 10/30/2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first "larger" screen LCD (I have 2 big screen Plasmas) and I must say I'm very happy. The HD picture is first rate. The standard definition channels are very good. I have DirecTV HD and the new high definition channels look very sharp. Audio is acceptable for not being connected to a home theatre. The remote control has lots of buttons, but let's be honest, who cares. The on-screen menu is well thought out and easy to use. I recommend HDMI over component connections. Great BANG for the buck.

This is a great TV

Chris from Hilton Head Island, SC on 9/9/2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this TV for 2 weeks now. This is a great TV folks. Color levels are well balanced. Black levels are very good. There is NO pixel lag during the fastest movements; and I have a very good eye. Reggie Bush can't even juke this TV. It looks very sleek and the sound is good too. I brought another TV home and when I set it up, the sound was horrible. So bad that I took it right back. This LCD at least sounds like a normal TV. A great TV at a very good price point. If you are looking for a 37" LCD, you can throw this one in the cart, folks. I don't think you will be disappointed. Remember too, Crutchfield doesn't sell junk. Everything they carry is top notch in quality. And no, I'm not drinking any Kool-Aid here.

TV Features

HDTV Tuner: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

Cinespeed: Toshiba's REGZA Premium LCD Hi-Speed Cinespeed panels offer fast response times of 8ms or faster for an ultra sharp picture, especially when displaying fast-moving action scenes, and demanding video games. A wide 176-degree viewing angle ensures that you can enjoy this TV from any seat in your room.

PixelPure 3G 14-Bit Digital Video Processing: Toshiba's 3rd generation PixelPure video processing system uses a 14-bit video DAC and constantly monitors changes in signal quality, content, and movement to enhance sharpness, contrast, and color reproduction. This advanced third-generation digital video processing system runs at a fast 333Mhz and is capable of producing 4,096 levels of gradation (16 times greater than a standard 8-bit processor) for a smooth, natural-looking picture without image banding.

DynaLight Dynamic Back-Light Control: Toshiba's DynaLight Technology monitors the brightness level of each video frame, and automatically adjusts the backlight intensity based on the image content. Precise signal analysis offers 256 levels of backlight intensity. This creates dynamic contrast up to 5X that of the original panel contrast, resulting in a deeper black level that increases detail and depth, even in low light environments.

Native Resolution: The 37HL67 displays all inputs at a resolution of 720p (1366 x 768). The HDMI inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i and VGA signals while the component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i.

CableClear DNR: Designed to optimize poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, this noise reduction system eliminates video noise ("snow") for a clean crisp image. This system detects the quality of the incoming video signal, and automatically applies the needed amount of video optimization.

Picture Size: When viewing a source, you can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • Natural: image is displayed close to its originally formatted proportion
  • Theater Wide 1: the picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the center of the picture remains close to its true proportion, but the left and right edges are stretched wider to fill the screen, used primarily with a 4:3 source
  • Theater Wide 2: entire picture is uniformly enlarged, used primarily with a widescreen source
  • Theater Wide 3: picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the picture is stretched wider to fill the width of the screen and stretched slightly taller
  • Full: mainly designed for receiving a squeezed 4:3 signal (a 16:9 [480i, 480p] programs squeezed into a 4:3 transmission), the picture is stretched wider to fill the screen, but not taller, none of the picture is hidden
  • 4:3 HD: provides a 4:3 aspect ratio of a 720p, 1080i or 1080p signal; sidebars fill the empty vertical spaces while not distorting the picture from its original size
  • Native: when receiving a 720p, 1080i or 1080p signal program, Native Mode restores the size of the picture by the 3-5% that is generally lost during the normal over-scanning that occurs on traditional sets. It also avoids unnecessary scaling of HD signals that can reduce overall image resolution and picture quality.

TheaterWide Scrolling: You can set separate scroll settings for the Theater Wide 2 and TheaterWide 3 modes for each input. You can adjust the scroll of the picture up and down as needed form -10 to +20.

Auto Aspect Ratio: The Auto Aspect Ratio feature will automatically select the picture size when one of the following inputs sources is received - a 480i signal from the Video 1 or 2 inputs or the Component Video 1 or 2 inputs or a 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or VGA signal from any of the HDMI inputs. The aspect ratio will automatically adjust as follows.

Aspect Ratio Of Signal SourceAutomatic Aspect Size Selected
4:3 normalNatural (with sidebars)
4:3 letter boxTheaterWide 2
16:9 fullFull

Note: When the TV cannot identify the aspect ratio of the signal source, the aspect ratio of the TV will be adjusted to your "Picture Size" selection in the TV's menu

Cinema Mode: When you view a DVD (3:2 pulldown processed) from a DVD player connected to the Video 1/2, Component Video 1/2, or any of the HDMI inputs on the TV, smoother motion can be obtained by setting the Cinema Mode to Film from Video.

Picture Modes: You can select one of the following picture modes for each input:

  • Sports: bright and dynamic picture
  • Standard: standard picture setting
  • Movie: lower contrast for a darkened room
  • Preference: allows you to adjust and store contrast, back light, DyanLight, brightness, color, tint, and sharpness

Color Temperature: You can change the quality of the picture by selecting from three preset color temperatures - Cool (blueish), Medium (neutral), or Warm (reddish). You can also adjust the levels of greens and blues in each preset temperature.

Dynamic Contrast: When dynamic contrast is set to On, the TV will detect when changes in picture quality that affect the appearance of your contrast settings and adjust the video automatically.

MPEG Noise Reduction: The MPEG noise reduction feature allows you to reduce visible interference caused by MPEG compression. You can choose High, Medium, Low, or Off.

Static Gamma Adjustment: The Static Gamma feature allows you to adjust the levels of black in the picture. The adjustment range is with +/-5 from center.

Game Mode: When playing a video game requiring split-second timing (high-action games, music creation, etc.), the Game Mode shortens the frame delays between the on-screen display and the input from the controller.

Note: The Game Mode can only be used on the Video 1, Video 2, Component Video 1, Component Video 2, or HDMI inputs.

Channel Browser: The Channel Browser allows you to browse and view channels by storing your recently viewed channels in channel history. You can surf back to channels you viewed prior to your current channel, and surf forward from previous channels up to your current channel. Up to 32 previously viewed channels can be stored in history. You can set a Home source for an Ant 1 channel or TV input.

Favorite Browser: Within the Channel Browser you can preview preset Favorite Channels via thumbnails along the bottom of the screen.

Channel Return: The Channel Return feature allows you to switch between two channels without entering an actual channel number each time

SurfLock: The SurfLock feature temporarily memorizes one channel under the Channel Return button, so you can return to that channel quickly from any other channel.

Channel Label: A list of common channel labels (logos) for various channels such as ABC, CBS, etc. are programmed into the TV. You are able to view and assign these logos to your incoming stations. If the desired channel label is not provided, you are able to manually enter and edit labels using the TV's on-screen keyboard.

Input Label: You can label each input according to the connected source. The preset list of labels includes: Cable, DTV, Satellite/DSS, VCR, Laser Disc, DVD, Audio Receiver, Compact Disc, Video Recorder, Game Console, Hide (so you don't have to toggle through an input you're not using), and the default label is blank.

Note: The PC input can only use the default "Blank" or "Hide" label.

Closed Captions: The TVs closed caption mode has two options.

  • Captions: an on-screen display of the dialog, narration, and sound effects of TV programs and video that are closed captioned
  • Text: an on-screen display of information not related tot the current program, such as weather or stock data when provide by individual stations

Digital CC: You can customize the closed caption display characteristics by changing the background color, text size, type, edge and color.

SoundStrip Speaker System: The SoundStrip Speaker System utilizes a thin-line speaker design with enhanced dynamic range. This eliminates the big round speakers, without losing any of the big home theater sound.

Stable Sound: When the signal source is changed, this feature limits the highest volume level to prevent extreme changes in volume.

SRS WOW: WOW is a special combination of SRS Labs audio technologies that creates a surround sound experience with deep, rich bass from stereo sound sources, making the TV audio sound fuller, richer, and wider. WOW consists of these three features:

  • SRS 3D: turns on/off the surround sound effect
  • FOCUS: turns on/off the vocal emphasis effect
  • TruBass: selects the desired bass expansion level (High, Low, or Off)

Audio Adjustment: You can adjust the audio quality by adjusting the TV's bass, treble and balance.

Dolby Digital Dynamic Range Control: This dynamic range control feature causes the ATSC dynamic range to be further compressed, allowing you to switch from ATSC to analog broadcast at the same dynamic range.

Mute: The TV mutes the volume half-way when the Mute button is pressed once on the remote; when pressed a second time the TV will mute the volume completely and when pressed a third time the volume will resume as normal.

Digital Audio Selector: You can use the TV's Digital Audio Selector to conveniently switch between audio track son a digital channel for those digital channels with multiple audio tracks.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be adjusted from 10 minutes to 3 hours in 10-minute increments.

Lock System: The TV's Lock Menu includes ratings blocking, channel blocking, input locking and a side panel control lock which are all protected by the same user customized 4 digit password.

Power-On Mode: You can select between a Power-Saving or Fast mode.

  • Power-Saving: keeps power consumption in standby mode to below 3W; as a result, it takes a bit longer to turn on
  • Fast Mode: increases power consumption in standby mode to allow the TV to turn on quicker; while in Fast mode the yellow LED on the TV front panel will be lit

Last Mode Memory: If the power is cut off while you are viewing the TV, the Last Mode Memory feature automatically turns on the TV when the power is re-supplied.

Note: You should unplug the TV's power cord if it is probable that you will be away from the TV for an extended period of time after the power is restored.

Auto Power Off: In ANT mode the TV will automatically turn itself off after approximately 15 minutes if it is turned to a vacant channel or a station that completes it broadcast for the day.

PC Compatible

PC Connection: You can view the image from your PC on the TV screen by the unit's 15-pin D-sub RGB input or HDMI 1 input.

PC Settings: When your PC is connected to the TV's 15-pin D-sub RGB terminal, you can use the TV's PC Settings features to make adjustments to the image such as picture horizontal and vertical position, clock phase (helps reduce noise and sharpens picture) and sampling clock (helps reduce noise and minimize periodic vertical stripes on-screen).

PC Audio: This function allows you to output the sound from your PC through the TV's speakers via the PC stereo RCA input on back of the TV.

Mounting Options

Pedestal Stand: The TV and pedestal stand come assembled. The pedestal stand assembles in 2-pieces (base and shaft). The shaft attaches to the base with four supplied hex-head bolts and then attaches to the TV with 5 hex-head bolts. An hex-head allen wrench-key is provided for installation. The stand adds 1.875"  to the height of the TV panel.

Wall Mounting: The TV has four threaded inserts on the back for use with an optional wall-mount bracket. The spacing of the mounting holes is VESA 200  (200mm horizontal x 200mm vertical), in accordance with the industry standards set by the Video Electronics Standards Association. The threaded inserts require 6mm machine screws (not supplied).

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on many other brand components; including cable boxes, satellite receivers, DVD players (including portables), VCRs, DVD/VCR combos, HTIBs (Home Theater In a Box), and TV/VCR combos. The remote buttons glow in the dark.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

3 HDMI Inputs: The three HDMI inputs consists of a single type-A connector HDMI jack. The HDMI jacks can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) from other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. The HDMI jacks are compliant with the E-EDID (Enhanced-Extended Display Identification) standards. If you want to connect a DVI-compatible device, you will need an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable. Since DVI does not carry audio signals, a stereo audio input is provided for the HDMI 1 input. In addition to the HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable, you will also need stereo audio cables. The HDMI 1 input can also be used to connect the TV to your PC along with the shared PC stereo RCA audio jacks.

Note: The HDMI jack will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

RGB/PC Input: This connection allows you to view the image of a personal computer on the TV screen. When connecting the PC to the TV, you will need a 15-pin D-sub RGB computer cable and a PC audio cable.

Component Video Inputs: The two ColorStream HD Component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

Digital Audio Output: An optical digital output is provided to allow you to connect the unit to a surround processor. The format can be set to Dolby Digital or PCM.
