Overview

Our take on the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED

Sharp wide-angle performance in almost any light

A rocky, windswept coastline. New York City at night. A ballroom full of dancers at your daughter's wedding. You can capture it all with this fast, ultra-wide 20mm Nikon lens. Its impressive low-light capabilities provide nearly endless opportunities for shooting rich, natural-looking images — indoors and out — without the need for a flash. Superb Nikon optics and a large maximum aperture let you closely control depth of field while taking tack-sharp wide-angle photos, even when shooting wide-open at f/1.8. A perfect match for FX-format Nikon SLRs, this compact, lightweight lens also works great with DX-format cams.

The first ultra wide angle lens I have ever used. It has some learning curves to use it properly. I am sure it will be a great addition to my photography. From all the reviews i have read, this lens has awesome reviews.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I shoot DX (7200) and was looking for a good quality, Wide Angle lens to serve as a walk-around and travel lens. I was also looking for great low light performance. And, weight was an important consideration, as I have a 17-55 2.8 which is an outstanding lens, but just too heavy for travel. My first and thus far only outing with the 20mm was to Hoover Dam, and it delivered on all counts. Sharpness was outstanding, and with a 30mm equivalent FOV, it was great for outside shots of the dam and bypass bridge. Interior shots were also easily captured. I am very happy with my purchase.

Pros: Outstanding sharpness. Light weight.

Cons: None that I have uncovered thus far.

Pros: A highly rated wide angle lens. Have not yet put it to the test. I have much confidence in Nikon F X lenses.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a long time user of the amazing 14-24, I was looking for a small go-anywhere compliment that accepts 77mm filters. This lens fits that bill perfectly but also ads in some extras. For most intents and purposes, this lens is every bit as good as the 14-24 @20. There may be individual characteristics that lean slightly one way or the other, but you can figure these two are about equal without a generally unnecessary amount of scrutiny. Besides matching the quality, adding filter threads and improving the portability, the 20/1.8 has some welcome enhancements. For one, you can get shallow DoF at 1.8 while the center of the image stays very very sharp. This is a fun feature for artistic purposes. Most likely due to its 7 blade diaphragm, you get outstanding sunstars/star bursts/light starts/whatever from this lens. The flare control is also superb. If you are an wide-to-ultrawide shooter, you will love this lens, even if you already have a 24mm prime or an amazing zoom covering the range. This is likely going down as a classic landscape lens.

Pros: Sharp, beautiful rendering. Great Flare control, accepts standard sized filters, very compact, very light, quite affordable. Did I mention its sharp? :)

Cons: 20mm is quite wide and this can affect its versatility. Its unlikely most people want to shoot all day with a 20mm lens. Maybe there could be a touch less vignette and distortion, but these are all very well controlled at apertures you'd likely use when they matter.

Features

Overview: The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED lens is an ultra-wide angle prime lens. It is optimized for FX-format cameras, but can be used with DX-format cameras (30mm equivalent). It is ideal for landscapes and architecture, wedding parties, concerts, crowd shots, and more. The lens comes with the HB-72 lens hood and the CL-1015 Soft lens case.

Silent Wave Motor (SWM): The exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables fast, accurate, and quiet auto focus.

Focus Mode Switch: The Focus Mode switch on the barrel of the lens lets you easily switch between manual focus and auto focus. If you want to enable auto focusing, the camera must be set to Auto Focus, and the switch on the lens needs to be set to "M/A". With most Nikon D-SLRs, the lens gives you a manual override option, allowing you to rotate the separate focus ring while pressing the shutter release halfway.

Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a rounded 7-blade diaphragm.

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

I needed a light weight wide angle prime that would work well on a DX camera (D7200). Outstanding results. if you can't capture great images with this lens, it's on the photographer, not the lens. [ BRIAN  Aug 23, 2017 ]
Night photography, aurora photography, landscape photography, lightweight, sharp, contrast, ultra-wide [ Kashing  Feb 02, 2016 ]
Recently purchased the D750 and it needed a good/great criminal partner. Wanted a wide angle lens with a wide aperture for landscape, architecture, automotive etc shoots [ SALLVADOR  Dec 30, 2015 ]

1 question already asked

This Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm lens is not listed as compatible with the Nikon D3100 camera in our research. The D3100 was discontinued in our database before this lens was released though, so it's possible they would still work, we just don't have any info on confirmed compatibility. To find out for sure, your best bet would be to contact Nikon's Support directly at 800-645-6687. I hope that helps!
