Simply One of the Best from Nikon
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
This has been one of the lenses I have been saving for to add to my collection. I purchased the 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII last year, but still needed that "fast" lens in the lower end of the zoom range for use with my D7100 (which I plan to upgrade to full frame once I save some more). First impressions of this lens are great! Absolutely fast enough for my needs and amazing bokeh with the lens wide open. Very minimal distortion at frame edges wide open and nothing noticeable when closing the aperture down a few stops. I have heard others complain that this is a heavy lens, but I LOVE the solid, well-built feel to this lens. I see this as becoming my new "walk-around" lens as the thing is so darned versatile. The only problem I have encountered so far is getting an accurate focus while shooting in poor lighting conditions, wide open, with lots of dancers moving around very fast on a stage while using my high continuous exposure setting on my camera. It is just a little too much for the camera/lens combination to handle. This problem, however, is solved when I shoot single frame, and significantly improved when I shoot continuos low. I just need to improve my technique rather than depending on shooting continuous to capture the images I really want in this particular setting. My advice is to purchase this lens, and any other of the high-end glass you can even if you are still shooting on DX equipment. You will only have to buy your glass once if you upgrade to full frame
Pros: Amazing images, fast, low edge distortion at f/2.8 and none when stopping down, solid, well-built, great in low light situations, beautiful bokeh
Cons: It is heavy, but "heavy" means there are more quality glass elements to this lens which results in overall better photographs.
