When you're photographing high-intensity sports or high-energy toddlers, fast autofocus can be your best friend. It can make all the difference between crisply focused images of that winning soccer goal or junior blowing out the birthday candles, and a blurry mess. Nikon's AF-S DX 55-300mm VR zoom lens gives you the impressive telephoto power and fast autofocus you need for taking rapid-fire shots of far-off subjects, or even ones as close as 4.6 feet. Its versatile focal range and optical performance make this lens a great choice for snapping sparkling clear images with your Nikon digital SLR camera.
Steady your hand-held shots
The lens has built-in Vibration Reduction so your photos will come out crisp in all different sorts of lighting conditions. Built-in motion sensors steer a special set of optical elements inside the lens, neatly compensating for camera movement and stabilizing the image. You get much sharper pictures — even in low-light conditions where slower shutter speeds and hand motion can easily cause blurred images with a regular lens.
Solid construction and great picture quality. I highly recommend this lens!

Solid construction and great picture quality. I highly recommend this lens!
Pros:
Cons:
I had the opportunity to use the lens at a college basketball game and was quite pleased with the performance of the lens with my D3200 camera. Lighting in the gym wasn't the best, but the lens coupled with higher ISO and shutter priority worked better than I thought it would. I wasn't close, but the lens brought me close to the action on the floor. The lens opening could be larger, but not within the price; it is a good deal.
Pros:
Cons:
I bundled this with my purchase of a D5500, and it's a great addition! It complements the 18-55 that come with the base kit, and is a great lens for taking on day trips or vacation without adding too much extra size and bulk
Pros: Fantastic quality construction, not too big for a zoom of this amount, and the quality is very very good
Cons: none
Very nice Lens. That's Why I have owned Nikon for over 40 years
Pros: Well Built, takes great pictures
Cons: for being 300mm, I thought I would have been able to zoom in twice a close as my Nikon 18-140mm lens. My only con on the lens.
A very well made lens. You might want to consider adding a UV lens cover.
Pros:
Cons:
Seems to be VERY well made. Gives us all of the functionality we were looking for. I think the price is a bit high in general but Crutchfield is always competitive.
Pros:
Cons:
The lens was a gift for my daughter who was absolutely delighted. She hasn't been able to give it a thorough outdoor test due to recent bad weather. She has taken excellent short range pictures and has no complaints. It will take more time for a complete outdoor evaluation.
Pros: Very easy to use.
Cons: None
Nice quality perfected product!
Pros: All is nice, what sharpness!
Cons: None.
Sweet Lens! Zoom is awesome for sports events and finding things in the distance. It's a bulky lens but worth it to capture those moments that are too far away for a standard shot.
Pros: Great Zoom and great images captured through this lens.
Cons: Bulky and sometimes slow auto focus during sports.
Was contemplating on getting either the Nikkor 70-300VR or the 55-300VR. Read reviews where the AF on the FX lens 70-300 was much faster than the 55-300. Ended up getting the 55-300 because this is a lens I probably will not use too often plus price difference between it and 70-300. So far so good, AF is fast and accurate. Good VR at the long end.
Pros: Value, sharp, light
Cons: Low light photography
Nice lens for the $$$$......... it's not to heavy, and is a good all around lens for traveling

Great Lens

Cons:
It's hard to give this a rating when I've only had the opportunity to use it twice. My rating could change after I have more experience with this lens. I got this lens specifically to take photos of birds. The first evening I used it, it was already pretty dark and there was snow cover. The birds were out of focus. Since I try to photograph birds at high speed, I think I was asking too much of the camera/lens. The next time I used the lens the lighting was perfect and I got a gorgeous photo of a downy woodpecker. I did not expect to do this well before getting used to the lens. So at the moment I'm very happy with it. The woodpecker was probably about 20" away and I have not had the opportunity to photograph anything that's extremely far away. So far, I have found the focal area to be smaller than I like, but I haven't played around with different options either.
Pros: I've only used this lens a couple of times and in good light I was impressed with the picture quality.
Cons:
Great It gives lots of options in shooting outdoor action.
Pros: Response quickly in change of angles and distance.
Cons: You have have about 5 - 6 foot distance from subject so inside shots are limited.
I wanted a more powerful lens for more nature photography but didn't want to take out a mortgage or donate a kidney. I can't say much that probably hasn't already been said about this lens. It is not as slow as I thought it would be after reading reviews. Mine does make a little bit of noise....more than my other lenses but it isn't enough to really turn heads or make a difference. The focus is a bit soft after the 200mm range but a good post production sharpening software does the trick for me. A great cost efficient lens for amateurs and semi-professionals. Also, the lens cover provided has some bad words been said about it....honestly, mine has worked fine and I am pretty rough on my equipment.
Pros: cost, lightweight, vibration reduction (VR)
Cons: none so far...considering the price
Great lens. Very versatile and provides great shots.
Pros: Great zoom capability, crisp, clear shots.
Cons: none
I purchased this lens to use with my Nikon D5200, and it is a very good lens! This is the first time I've ordered from Crutchfield, and I was highly impressed with the entire experience. Got this lens at a GREAT price! It takes very good telephoto shots. I live across from a mountain range, and this lens zooms in like I was standing right at the summit! I love it! Great photo quality, and a quiet, fast motor. I was very happy to find a 55-300 as it covers a great deal of focal length without having to have two different lenses. It is perfect for my needs (telephoto and night photography-it takes great photos of the moon). The only things I am not terribly pleased about is the included lens hood and the autofocus-HOOD-it's not of very good quality (which surprised me) and I don't really like to use it. A UV filter might be the ticket here (58mm) to avoid lens flare. The autofocus mode can be a little slow especially if using the lens for night photography or action photos. I missed a few good action shots because the AF was stalling-but thankfully I don't try for many action shots. The manual focus took a little getting used to-it seems slightly awkward to use at first. Maybe it was just me, but I thought I would mention it.
Pros: Very reasonably priced, takes great photos throughout the range of focal lengths, quiet
Cons: Accompanying lens hood is disappointing-might want to invest in a better one or use a UV filter for this lens. Beware of the slow autofocus in certain situations (night, action)
I PURCHASED THIS LENS WITH THE NIKON 5200 KIT. IT IS A VERY VERSATILE ZOOM LENS. THE VIBRATION REDUCTION IS A COOL FEATURE. IF YOU HAVE TO MAKE A QUICK ADJUSTMENT TO GET A SHOT. IT WILL USUALLY TAKE A GREAT PHOTO. IF YOU WANT A GREAT ZOOM LENS, YOU WILL REALLY ENJOY THE PHOTOS THAT YOU GET. ALSO THE CRUTCHFIELD PEOPLE WILL GIVE YOU GREAT ASSISTANCE, IN YOUR SHOPPING EXPERIENCE. YOU NEED THIS LENS.
Pros: EASE OF USE. QUALITY PHOTOS FROM ALL DISTANCES.
Cons: NOTHING TO REPORT.
Great product... Was looking for this lens on many other websites but Crutchfield offered the best price... Great customer service too...
Pros:
Cons:
Great addition to my great camera.
Pros: Nice zoom lens
Cons: None
Lens takes sharp, beautiful pictures. There is little, if any, fall off at the edges at any focal length. The AF motor works silently. The only issue I have with this lens is the lens hood that is supplied with it. It is the snap on type, and is flimsy, to say the least. It fell apart and into 4 pieces after only 3 uses. When I contacted Nikon, there "customer service" response was that "I must have abused it". On Nikon's site there are at least 3 other people with the same problem. If you buy this lens, be prepared to buy an after market lens hood.

Overview: The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm, f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens is a 5.5x telephoto zoom lens, ideal for capturing distant subjects at athletic events, family pictures, sunsets, and travel shots, etc. It is designed for use with compact DX-format cameras, but can be used with larger FX-format cameras in the DX Crop Mode. The angle of view is equivalent to a focal length of 82.5 to 450mm in FX/35mm format D-SLRs.
Super Integrated Coating: Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduces flare.
ED Elements: Two built-in Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements offer superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration, even at the widest available aperture.
High Refractive Index: The lens features a High Refractive Index (HRI) lens element which keeps the lens compact while offering high contrast, even at maximum aperture.
Silent Wave Motor (SWM): The exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables fast, accurate, and quiet auto focus.
Focus Mode Switch: You can easily switch between manual and auto focus operation by using the convenient A-M Focus Mode Switch, located on the barrel of the lens. If the camera is set to Manual Focus, the focus mode is Manual, regardless of the setting of the switch. For Auto Focus, both the camera and the lens must be set to AF.
Nikon VR II Image Stabilization: Engineered specifically for each VR Nikkor lens, the Vibration Reduction II Image Stabilization enables shutter speeds at up to 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. Vibration Reduction is performed through a lens-shift method using voice coil motors (VCMs). Even when the camera is mounted on a tripod, Vibration Reduction can reduce vibrations that may occur due to the shutter release. You can turn Vibration Reduction on or off using the VR switch on the barrel of the lens.
Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a rounded 9-blade diaphragm, which renders a more natural appearance of out-of-focus image elements.
Lens Hood: The lens comes with the HB-57 snap-on type lens hood. The hood adds approximately 1-5/8" to the overall length of the lens. You can invert the hood and snap it onto the lens for storage, if desired.
Warranty Terms: Nikon offers a 1-year parts and labor warranty on this lens. An additional 4-year Extended Service Coverage is available at no charge if you register the product with Nikon within 10 days of purchase.
