Great General Purpose Lens
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
The Nikon 10-100mm f/4.0-5.6 1 Nikkor Lens is a great all around lens for any Nikon 1 camera (CX Mount). It is the equivalent of 28-270mm zoom on a 35mm full frame camera so you get everything from wide angle to a relatively strong telephoto (but not enough reach for birding, etc.). Such a lens is often referred to as a travel zoom or super zoom and allows users to have one lens on for most needs. Compared to some other lenses on the Nikon 1 system, this lens is a bit heavier and bulkier, but it isn't anywhere near as big and bulky as the 10-100mm PD zoom that is also available (that one is primarily for video). The weight seems to be due to the relatively stout design as it is made of metal and is probably more durable than some of the cheaper plastic Nikon 1 lenses. The image quality is good for a zoom like this with some chromatic aberration at the telephoto end (easily fixed in post-processing software). The relatively slow f/4-5.6 aperture means this isn't going to be the lens for people to catch indoor action under dim lighting. The image stabilization, however, makes it so a person can shoot down to 1/15 second for relatively static subjects.
Pros: Well made, good materials, good image quality, covers a wide range of typical focal lengths. Probably the best choice for Nikon 1 if you want an all around lens so that you don't have to change lenses often.
Cons: A little bit heavy but is still proportional with Nikon 1 bodies (doesn't make them off balance). Some chromatic aberration at the long end. Not as sharp as the fixed focal length lenses (primes) for the Nikon 1 cameras.
