Nikon Coolpix A900

Our take on the Nikon Coolpix S9700

The Nikon Coolpix S9700 fits in your pocket, but it doesn't act like a small camera. Optical zoom brings your subject up to 30X closer, so you can photograph it in living color and crisp detail. No more tiny dots on a faraway stage — prove you were there with a close-up of the performer's face. That's not to say this camera is a one-trick pony, though. Macro mode provides stunning texture and color when you're focused on a honeybee in a flower, as well. If it's video you're after, the camera can record full HD movies as well.

Tag and upload photos with built-in GPS and Wi-Fi®

The S9700 is a great choice for a vacation camera. Not only can it capture images close-up and faraway, but it can upload your photos and videos to a mobile device instantly. That means you can share your adventures as they happen. And the camera's built-in GPS will let everyone know exactly where you were when you saw that beautiful sunset or unusual bird. Make sure you remember the name of that fantastic beach so you can go back and visit again in the future.

Get hands-on when and if you want to

I purchased this camera to replace a relatively inferior Panasonic. The quality is considerably better, with a good lens.

Pros: The camera is small, fits in my shirt pocket, has adequate protection of the lens, and takes excellent photos. I use it while traveling, when I don't want to carry a more expensive SLR.

Cons: None...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I owned an S9500 prior to this camera and was and am impressed with the compact size, quality of pictures and video that I could take with these cameras. I'm very impressed with the improved zoom feature on the S9700. I carry this camera in my shirt pocket while I am hunting and enjoying the outdoors. It is so easy to operate and carry around.

Pros: size, zoom lens, clarity of pictures and video

Cons: The video button is too easily activated because of its close proximity to the corner of the camera where I hang on to the camera.

The Perfect Pocket Camera

Chuck from Fort Wayne, IN on 4/27/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This camera is the perfect companion camera not only for your travels, but also as your everyday all-purpose camera that gives you true full-size DSLR results in a small package. It's 30X optical zoom lens gives one a very wide range of focal lengths from wide to zoom that meets most requirements except for those extreme situations that require interchangeable lenses, such as professional sports or extreme nature photography. The extensive menu selections that Coolpix cameras offer is the reason this is my 2nd Coolpix camera. After reviewing many other of Coolpix competitors over time, nothing came close to matching the menu features and other options found in the Coolpix line, and particularly this model. The viewfinder is large and bright. The controls are located where you'd expect them to be. The ability to select aperature or shutter speed and its manual settings capability allow one to override its automatic settings and manipulate this camera as easily as any DSLR. And its ability to connect to the Internet is a bonus that makes sharing your photos easy. It accepts GPS settings as well as the newer GLONASS settings which may make it easier to set in some parts of the world (and fives GPS a backup). The matte-black finish is striking and gives it a good grip. And it's low signal-to-noise ratio in low light situations is an added bonus. You absolutely can't go wrong with the purchase of this camera to meet all of the requirements of 99% of all cameras of this size

Pros: Quality build, fit and finish, extensive unmatched menu selection, small size, 30X optical zoom, manual setting capabilities allowing for manual override of automatic features, large & bright viewfinder, user-friendly controls.

Cons: * User's Manual that comes with the camera is inadequate as it does not explain all the extensive Menu features, forcing one to have to find and download the available Reference Manual for this model which is fortunately available online; small selection of form-fitting camera cases available from NIKON for this model (only one available at this time), and none offering a belt clip, forcing one to search elsewhere for one if a belt loop or clip is desired.

In addition, the camera features an Electronic Compass and built-in mapping with Points of Interest to indicate nearby scenic and historic landmarks.

    • Shutter-priority Auto: Shutter speed manually set and the camera automatically determines the aperture value.

  • Scene Modes: In the menu, you can select one of the following scene modes: Scene Auto Selector, Night Landscape, Portrait, Close-up, Landscape, Food, Sports, Museum, Night Portrait, Fireworks show, Party/indoor, Black & White Copy, Beach, Backlighting, Snow, Easy Panorama, Sunset, Pet portrait and Dusk/dawn.
  • Smart Portrait: Camera detects human faces and automatically releases the shutter when they smile. A skin softening option makes faces smoother.
  • Special Effects: You can apply the following effects to images during shooting: Soft, Nostalgic Sepia, High-contrast monochrome, High key, Low key, Selective color, Pop, Super Vivid, Cross Process, and Toy Camera Effect 1 & 2

Continuous Shooting: In addition to single frame shooting, the S9700 can shoot continuously at multiple speeds while the shutter release is pressed and held:

  • Continuous H: Up to 5 pictures are continuously shot at a rate of 6.9 fps.
  • Continuous L: Up to 36 pictures are continuously shot at a rate of 2.2 fps.
  • Pre-shooting Cache: To prevent missing the perfect moment, the camera begins saving images when the shutter release is pressed halfway, then shoots continuously at about 20 fps from the time the button is pressed until the time it is released. Up to 25 frames, including up to 5 frames in the cache, are saved. Image size is fixed at 1M (1280 x 960).
  • Continuous H 120 fps: Up to 50 frames are captured at a speed of about 1/120 seconds. (Image size is VGA 640 x 480)
  • Continuous H 60 fps: Up to 25 frames are captured at a speed of about 1/60 seconds. (Image size is 1M 1280 x 960)
  • Best Shot Selector: Up to 10 frames are taken, and the camera automatically selects only the sharpest picture in the series. Recommended for low light conditions without flash, with the camera zoomed in, or in other situations subject to camera shake.
  • Multi-shot 16: Each time the shutter button is pressed, the camera captures a series of 16 images and saves them as a single image. Frame rate is 30 fps, and the image is fixed at 5M 2560 x 1920.

Self-timer: The camera is equipped with a 10-second self-timer for self-portraits or a 2-second to prevent camera shake caused by pressing the shutter release button.

Flash: The built-in flash has a range of 1'-8" to 19' (Wide angle) and 5' to 11' (Telephoto). You can choose from the following flash modes: Auto, Auto (with Red-eye reduction), Fill Flash, Slow Sync, and Off.

Playback Menu: You can view photos one at a time in full frame, or in a Thumbnail Playback of 4, 9, 16, or 72 images. You can also zoom in to magnify a single image up to 10x. When playing back movies, you can pause/resume, rewind/advance, and adjust volume. Other playback menu options include: Quick Effects, Quick Retouch, D-Lighting, Glamour Retouch, Small Picture, and Crop.

Quick Effects: Special effects can be applied to images immediately after releasing the shutter. You can check the end results of each effect on an image on the preview screen.
