This analog turntable thrives in a digital world

Hear music, not noise

It's truly impressive how much clever engineering goes into something so pretty to look at. Under the turntable's polished exterior is a heavy MDF base designed to resist external vibration. The turntable's dense die-cast aluminum platter spins on a polished stainless steel spindle and bronze bushing that minimize friction for smooth, silent rotation. Its variable-speed belt-drive system isolates motor vibration, and its ability to play 33-1/3, 45, and 78 rpm discs will delight serious vinyl collectors. The curved aluminum tonearm — equipped with a pre-mounted moving-magnet cartridge — ensures super-accurate tracking and satisfying, rich tonal accuracy.

Enjoy soulful vinyl sound with minimal setup

You want to spend as little time possible setting up your system so you can get to the joy of listening. That's why the TN-400S comes out of the box virtually ready to play. Its pre-matched, factory-mounted phono cartridge and tonearm take the guesswork out of installation, and give you optimized sound quality with minimal effort. A few simple steps to dial in key settings like tracking force and anti-skating are all it takes to get this 'table primed and ready to go.

I replaced an old Pioneer PL-L30 turntable. Setup was easy I followed the instructions and there were absolutely no issues. The dust cover was mounted and I did not touch it. The sound is so very much better than my old turntable that I am in heaven. The turntable is beautiful. The reason for 4 stars is the pressure required for the stylus is 1.4 grams. You have to guess a bit where 1.4 is on the counter weight as it is marked at 0.25 and 0.5 increments; the real downfall is the anti-skating which has three marks for 1,2, and 3 grams. The anti-skating marks are close together and you are seriously guessing where 1.4 is, this turntable seems to be fairly forgiving so being close seems to be good enough. That quibble aside, I am looking forward to years of use.

The quality of sound is amazing. I highly recommend this model to anyone.

Pros: The sound clarity is awesome. It is also a pretty piece of equipment- sleek and sexy.

Cons: I found the installation instructions could be better for those of us who never owned such quality equipment. If the pictures for balancing the arm were better that would have been great. We figured it out though.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We are very satisfied with our turntable. The sound is fantastic and installation a breeze. Package delivered on time as promised and packed like a tank. Do not adjust factory setting on weight of cartridge arm as suggested in the manual without playing a record first. We adjusted first and had to revert back to original setting which had us worried for a second. After adjusting weight to original setting the unit played perfectly. Does not come with a USB connector, had to buy separtly. Great unit, honest price, simple and communicative service from Crutchfield-very pleased.

Pros: great sound, easy install

Cons: no USB cable provided. auto return would be a nice addition

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my husband. His thrift store turntable quit working. We are younger and not as knowledgeable as other consumers. This turntable produces the sound of a 1970s model. So, keep your records, and buy this turntable to play those. Modern music is so computerized. This music sounds as if you're there. I recommend this product, even if you're hesitant about purchasing it online, like we were.

Bought this to use with my Sonos system. (Connect, Soundbar, Sub, Surrounds). Setup was extremely easy on the turntable side, a little trickier on the Sonos side due to need to tweak compression settings. Old LPs sound great!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice turntable and sounds good, no complaints. The cherry paint job on the MDF base is quite attractive. Not as stout as my ancient 1970's era Technics direct drive turntable that bit the dust but that's the way things are nowadays. And supposedly belt drive is preferable for home stereo use whereas direct drive is more suitable for DJ use. The Teac came with a felt platter mat I didn't care for so ordered a 1/8" thick cork & rubber composite platter mat from another retailer.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really nice turntable and works as advertised. Set up time is about 20-30 minutes and sound separation, even on my old stero records is impressive. I replaced a well working 30 year old technics turntable, but this one is clearly superior. I do Like the belt drive system and the no need to adjust RPM like my old direct drive turntable...speed seems to be right on. Manual operation is a little more work, but I knew this when I purchased the unit. I am happy with this purchase.

Cons:

Great turntable for the price

Paul from Abilene, TX on 1/21/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was easy to set up, has zero noise using a 6ft Monster component cable, and sounds great. I really like that it has component jacks on it rather than an integrated cable, allowing use of different length and higher quality cable(s). Pre-amp works well although I have no use for it. I haven't used the digital record mode yet as my main purpose was to play vinyl collection. So far I am very satisfied with it.

Pros: Easy setup, no noise, component jacks

Cons: Full manual

Great analog sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been looking to replace my 25 year old Sony turntable. Read Crutchfield's article on turntables and thought it was time to update. Santa brought me the Teac TN-400S. This turntable is amazing. It reminds me of my old AR table. Very easy set-up. The 400S combined with the Audio-Technica cartridge produces a very open, transparent sound. Several of my albums are 50+ years old and I feel like I am listening to them for the first time. Very pleased.

Pros: Good build quality. Set-up a breeze.

Cons: None

Andrew from Lake Placid, NY on 12/23/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this turntable because it had slightly better components than the TN-300. When the turntable was assembled it really gave me the impression that it is a solidly built and will last as long as I do. Set up was fairly straight forward, it took about 20 minutes to get everything dialed in. It should be noted that I have my own amplifier so I cannot attest to the quality of the built in pre-amp. I found the sound quality to be much improved from my old Sanyo table. With the EQ set completely flat on my receiver, the low end sounds were downing out the highs a bit, so I dropped down the bass dial on my receiver just a tiny bit and turned up the treble a little as well. With those adjustments I was very impressed with the sound quality; it was rich, well balanced, and I felt like I was hearing the audio as it was intended. I have listened to roughly 3 hours of music on the table and I haven't heard any concerning hums. I powered up the table, left the needle on the rest, and turned up the volume on the amp to see it there was any interference. I did not hear any. The only nit-pick I have against this and every table I used is that the dust cover squeaks when you raise and lower it. To me this is something that manufacturers need to figure out. All of this high end audio engineering and no one has figured out how to make a hinge that doesn't squeak. I have never heard the TN-300 so I can't say that the 400 is worth the extra $$$.

Pros: well built, good sound

Cons: location of main power button, squeaky dust cover hinge.

I have a TN-400S and am very happy with it. I did upgrade the cartridge. The 400s has a built in pre-amp, so that would plug into the Sonos Connect to add you 400S as a Sonos source. The Sonos Connect amp is for a different purpose. The connect amp becomes part of your Sonos network, retrieves its content from Sonos system and allows you to hook your old traditional, non-WiFi speakers. [ John M Stephens  Mar 02, 2017 ]
We used a stereo receiver and speaker wire to play our TN400S. Stereo receiver hooked to the turntable and speaker wire from the receiver to the speakers. We turn off the pre amp button and the sound is truly amazing. I would think that using the amp would get you a much better sound experience. [ Joshua  Mar 02, 2017 ]
If it is not completely veneered, it is at least partially veneered because there is no end grain anywhere; all six sides are side grained. [ Daniel P.  Dec 11, 2016 ]
The TEAC's belt driver motor supports 78RPM. The provided needle can be used for playing 78RPM records (just adjust the tracking weight) but is also replaceable (standard 0.5" mount) if you prefer to use one that's optimized for that speed. At this time, we do not offer any 78RPM-specific replacement cartridges/styluses. I hope that helps. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5 [ Ryan  Dec 02, 2016 ]  Staff
