Advanced drivers for detailed, dynamic sound

Boston's Extended Wide Bandwidth dome tweeter lets the M250 really sing with silky, transparent highs. Unlike most tweeters, this one has a dimple in the middle that stabilizes the linear motion of the tweeter for significantly lower distortion, improved dispersion for a deep, expansive soundstage, and greater clarity over a broad range of frequencies. The M250 also delivers dynamic mids and bass thanks to a 5-1/4" polypropylene midrange and a 5-1/4" woofer with an acoustically tuned port.

Better cabinet construction improves performance

Cabinet vibration, or resonance, is the enemy of clear sound. It distorts and colors the sound of instruments and vocals. Boston's M Series speakers fight vibration with LoQ™ cabinet construction. By using two sheets of MDF (medium density fiberboard) with a special damping adhesive layer between them, Boston created an enclosure that provides the acoustic deadening of much thicker materials without the drawbacks of added weight and increased size. The result is a relatively compact, lightweight speaker that has a very low resonance — or in speaker-speak, a low “Q.”

In addition to the Lo-Q cabinet material, Boston also used a scanning laser vibrometer to critically position the M Series cabinets' internal braces where they provide the most benefit. Then they added heavy-duty absorptive cabinet fill to eliminate internal standing waves. These advanced cabinet building techniques and materials result in speakers with impressive transparency and a large, detailed soundstage.

Smaller size and high quality sound is leaps and bounds better than the speakers they were replacing. Can only improve once they are broken in over time.

Smaller size and high quality sound is leaps and bounds better than the speakers they were replacing. Can only improve once they are broken in over time.

Pros: Clarity over previous speakers is impressive. Special price at the time of purchase did not hurt either. Quality sound for a decent price.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We've had these speakers a little over a week and so far, we're very pleased with them. All of our music sounds better. We can hear little nuances that we couldn't with our 25 year old Bostons. The smaller footprint makes them fit into our home theatre system better, as well.

Pros: Great sound, small footprint, nice look.

Cons: None so far.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These were replacing some lower end bookshelf speakers and I was amazed by the improvement. The towers look great and sound great. After a few weeks of use they continuously handle high volume very well without any kind of feedback. The only issue I have is the base of it is not completely flat so it is not as sable as it could be. Still overall definitely worth the purchase.

Pros: Look and sound great

Cons: Tower is not completely stable, wobbles back and forth some.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always been a Boston Acoustics fan and the M250 is just another reason why I love Boston Acoustic speakers. Amazing sound and amazing bass in such a small tower speaker. I would highly recommend these to anyone. From the low end to the high end these speakers rock. And they will handle very high volumes without clipping or distorting.

Pros: Beautiful cabinet and amazing sound quality.

Cons: I wish the speaker stood a little taller. They just look so small in my living room.

I Wish I Didn't Live in an Apartment

Amature Audiophile from Seattle, Washington on 10/6/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm sure I could write more if I had a chance to push these speakers but I live in an apartment complex and try to be respectful; however, I've done what I can to enjoy these speakers and they've sounded great! The comfortable size, stylish look, sound quality, and price have made me very happy with my purchase. Thank you Crutchfield!

Pros: Great look, good size, and very stylish. Easy to hook up. Sound quality stays good at higher than normal volumes remaining clear and clean. My system includes an older and lower end brand name receiver with outputs for dual subs of the same manufacturer and price range; I can't wait to see what these speakers sound like with a new receiver and better low end support. The speakers also come with different base attachments for carpeted/hard floors.

Cons: Boxes arrived looking pretty abused by the shipping company but the speakers were well packaged and no obvious damage was identified. And I'm not exactly sure why this two year old product was already on sale for the discounted price, but at this point I guess it doesn't matter. I'm thrilled with the product and the quality... and the discounted price makes it that much better.

Questionable quality control, scooped mids

Thomas P from Seattle, WA on 8/23/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been a Boston Acoustics user for 3 generations of product lines (over 12 years), so I was excited to see these on Crutchfield at such a great price. First impression was good; clean lines, good build quality to the cabinets. Unfortunately, the good points stopped there. 1. One of the speakers arrived with a blown woofer. I'm shocked that BA would ship a cabinet from their top-of-the-line series with a blown driver. While I don't expect a full frequency response chart at this price(although it might be reasonable to expect one at $750), I would expect that they'd run a basic sound check as part of QA / QC. Nope. 2. Despite sporting a full tweeter / mid / woofer combo, these speakers are surprisingly unbalanced in the midrange. The mids are not just "flat", they're "scooped". I paired the non-blown speaker with a Boston Compact Reference series speaker; the difference in the soundstage was amazing. The soundstage on the side with the M250 sounded like it had a hole in it. The midrange was very weak. This might be the kind of thing that would improve as the speakers break in, but I'll be sending these back.

Pros: - Tweeter is very clear and has good tonality - Crutchfield's customer support is great; these speakers are going back tomorrow

Cons: - Mids are very weak and totally overpowered by the tweeter - One speaker arrived with a blown woofer; no quality control even for the top-end speaker line? I think this will be the last Boston Acoustics product I'll ever buy

Boston Acoustics M250 speakers

RoCo from Delaware on 7/14/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A really clean sound, at once I was aware these guys were infinitely better than the old (apparently junk!) speakers I was using. These speakers have performed as you would expect for this level of speaker from Boston Acoustics. I can't say I bought them for their looks, but they _do_ have a nice look to them too. I couldn't be more pleased with the purchase, and Crutchfield was excellent throughout, so I couldn't be happier with the purchase process either!

Pros: Excellent sound, good looks, not massive but still provide "presence".

Cons: Nothing to complain about (if you're into that type of thing!). :-)

Supreme Sound

Anonymous from Clifton Park, NY on 3/30/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speakers are even more classy looking than I could have imagined. For tower speakers they are very space conscious. Now for the sound, I could say WOW and it would say a lot but these go above that. They fill my room and are very crisp and clear allowing you to hear every little detail. With the right TV you will not want to go out to the movies. I'm even more excited I took advantage of the buy one get one. Thanks crutchfield!

Pros: Big sounding towers but not space consuming. Elegant. Even better when you have these as your rear speakers too. Well worth the money.

Cons: Can't find one if I tried!!

2.5-Way Speaker Design: This 2.5-way speaker combines a 1" Extended Wide Bandwidth dome tweeter with a 5.25" mid/woofer and a 5.25" woofer for smooth, natural sound, and dynamic bass. Experience rich sound while enjoying music, movies, and more with the M250 floor-standing loudspeaker from Boston Acoustics.

  • 1" Extended Wide Bandwidth Dome Tweeter: The M250 floor-standing loudspeaker is equipped with Boston's signature 1" Extended Wide Bandwidth (EWB) dome tweeter, which is designed to cover a broad range of frequencies, reduce distortion, and improve clarity in the high registers. Unlike most tweeters, the EWB has a small dimple in the middle and a large radiating surface that extends from the center to the outside perimeter of the diaphragm. This design enables the tweeter to track subtle treble details and reproduce the highest frequencies with ease.
  • Dual 5.25" Cone Woofers: The speaker also contains a 5.25"polypropylene mid/woofer driver and a 5.25" polypropylene cone woofer for extended bass response. Aluminum shorting rings help produce clearer sound.

High Quality Crossover Networks: Very high quality crossover networks featuring low loss film capacitors and low distortion laminated silicon steel core inductors are utilized for greater clarity and minimal coloration.

Lo-Q Cabinet Construction: The M250's Lo-Q cabinet is built to reduce vibrations and eliminate unwanted resonances. The M250 has a cabinet made of Lo-Q, a material consisting of two pieces of medium-density fiberboard joined together with a thick layer of damping adhesive in the middle. This material significantly reduces cabinet vibrations to virtually eliminate unwanted resonances allowing the M250 to create a larger, more vivid soundstage. The cabinet also contains heavy-duty absorptive fill and internal braces which have been strategically positioned to maximize the speaker's strength and optimize sound.

Gloss Black Finish w/ Leatherette Wrap: The M250's gloss black finish and curved side panels with faux leather wrap can complement almost any decor.

Rear-Firing Port: The Boston Acoustics M250 employs a rear-firing port for higher efficiency and greater bass response. Because of the rear-firing port, the speaker should be placed at least 3" from the wall.

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The Boston Acoustics M250 floor-standing loudspeaker is fitted with a set of binding post speaker terminals that will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), banana plugs (single only), spade-connectors, and pin-connectors.

Rubber & Spike Feet: The M250 floor-standing loudspeaker comes with pre-installed rubber feet which are ideal for hardwood floors. Spike feet are also included for placement on a carpeted surface.

Customer Q&A

1 question already asked

Yes. They can. In fact mine are close to the wall. I have my record player hooked up to these and they sound wonderful!! Hope that helps. [ Sankalp  Apr 13, 2015 ]
I'm using a powered sub with my system and have my Boston placed about 6 inches away from the wall slightly angled in. The sound is full and great. If I didn't have a sub I would pull them further away from the wall. I hope that helps [ Justin  Apr 13, 2015 ]
Yes, they can. May pair reside close to the wall in my living room. BTW - I love these speakers! Great value for the price... [ Greg  Apr 13, 2015 ]
I think they could be placed "close" to a wall since the port is only 2" and shouldn't need too much gap, but I'm not sure how close you can get without impacting sound. The port is flush with the back of the speaker and the back of the speaker is flat so the port will be blocked/muffled if the speaker is placed directly against or too close to the wall, but it shouldn't take much spacing to eliminate the concern. I hope this helps!!! [ Bob  Apr 13, 2015 ]
Joe, I have mine out about 4 feet from the wall with a subwoofer directly behind one. I suppose you can place them near the wall without a problem. These are beautiful sounding speakers ...although they may sound ok out of the box, give it a few weeks and the sound really come alive as they break in [ Steven  Apr 13, 2015 ]
