Our take on the Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS Digital Cinema

Many people feel the world has become too complicated of a place: 40-page manuals. Spaghetti strands of cables. Signals flying through the air. And though we cater to the crowd that likes lots of features too, we here at Crutchfield feel you when you say, "I just want it to sound good, and I don't want to spend 3 hours studying the manual."

Better TV sound, made simple

Many people feel the world has become too complicated of a place: 40-page manuals. Spaghetti strands of cables. Signals flying through the air. And though we cater to the crowd that likes lots of features too, we here at Crutchfield feel you when you say, "I just want it to sound good, and I don't want to spend 3 hours studying the manual."

The Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS Digital Cinema has small but powerful satellite speakers

Small but powerful satellite speakers make the Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS Digital Cinema a great choice for tight spaces.

As simple as hooking speakers to a PC

You can't find a better combination of slick and simple than this great-sounding speaker/subwoofer system from Boston Acoustics, the SoundWare XS Digital Cinema. It connects easily to almost any TV and delivers a big boost in sound quality, without the need for any other components. Dolby decoding works together with Boston's proprietary virtual surround processing to deliver dramatic surround-like effects using just the two tiny satellite speakers and subwoofer. And the included control pod, which receives commands from the included remote, can learn commands from your existing TV remote, minimizing clutter on your coffee table.

Wireless music streaming

You'll have a whole new perspective on your music library as well. The SoundWare XS Digital Cinema not only has a dedicated music playback mode, but also features Bluetooth® wireless connectivity. Stream and control your music directly from a compatible smartphone, tablet, or media player. Your music will sound nice and full thanks to the 8", front-firing subwoofer.

If you hear brooms on the ceiling...

Spots for two tiny mounting brackets on the wall and a square foot of floor space are all you're going to need for this system, making it perfect for offices, studio apartments, dorm rooms and more. But beware: 250 watts of total power mean the SoundWare XS will be right at home in bigger settings, too. If your landlord calls, it's not our fault. Enjoy thoroughly but responsibly.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It works great until the little remote it comes with no longer works. I haven't been able to adjust the volume on mine since about the 4th or 5th week I had it. Luckily its at a medium setting where it will stay forever. I wish it had a real remote or it was easy to get it replaced. Went back and forth with their customer service and just got wore out.

    Buyer beware Bluetooth compatibility

    Michael from Manhattan,IL on 12/12/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this system for over a year now and loved it. That is until we got new IPhone6's with the IOS 8 or above update. Everyone should know that Boston Acustics products will not work with the Bluetooth from IPhone6's or newer! I now have a boat anchor sitting in my living room that is useless. I called Boston Accustics who told me they were aware of this issue and that it was on Apples end, and that there were currently no fixes for the matter. Grrrr

    Pros: Sounds great

Cons: Bluetooth compatibility out of date

Set up was a breeze,(except for synching w/ remotes) has good sound for it's size & price.

    Pros: Easy set-up, good sound

Cons: Won't synch w/ t-v or cable remotes, some small parts missing

Great System at a small price!

I heard this product in a Big Box Store in 2012 and I thought what sound it produces! I compared to the Bose Cinemate and I liked the sounds better with this product. Keep up the good work

Pros: Small, large sound, nice looking, easy to hook-up

Cons: None that I can think of

Big sound in a small package

Johann from Lacey, WA on 7/4/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Incredible system in a small package! The bass, mids and highs are crisp with either TV or music. The Bluetooth connectivity makes it easy to listen to music off a phone or tablet versus my old method of an aux cable. I couldn't believe the price point as this system combines several modes and quality all in one.

Pros: Bluetooth connectivity, strong bass, small package, price

    Cons: Small gauge speaker wire

    Great system for the Money

Paul from Mount Dora fl on 7/1/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome little system. Bass is excellent, mids and highs are just right. Blue tooth feature is awesome for pairing your personal music to the system. I don't understand how they are selling this so cheap. Thinking about purchasing another one.

Pros: Price, Bluetooth, small size, bass is awesome

Cons: Came with cheap speaker wire, nitpicking for sure. I changed it out for some a little thicker.

    good for price

Rob in Central VA from Fork Union, VA on 6/29/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would love to say this is a completely awesome product but for the price i should be happy and it outshines my regular TV speakers! I don't know if I'm a qualified audiofile but I know what I like. The sub puts out great bass but the satelites are a little "tinny" if you will. delivering highs of tweeters but this speaker system has a hole in the mid-range sound. For a guest room, second or third TV this is great. As for your living room theater, spend a little more. Use the Crutchfield site, they have always been prompt and courteous to me,

    Pros: Inexpensive, good looking, compact

Cons: sattelites "too tinny" (not too tiny), system has limited mid-range sound.

    Great sound for smaller room

gginnc from Cherryville, NC on 6/17/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very compact and practically fades into the background--until it starts to operate. I placed the two small cubes on the TV stand and positioned them at either end--the subwoofer is on the floor and almost behind the stand. Sound is crisp and voices clear--the subwoofer is very energetic so it is set at between 30-40%--very nice in a bedroom application. No problem programming the Boston Acoustics unit with an AT&T control for volume and mute. My Sony TV has an optical output and that is how the unit is connected. All in all a highly satisfactory system

Pros: Size and ease of setup, sound quality is excellent for such a small unit.

Cons: No way to balance treble & bass. When muted, one of the green lights blinks annoyingly.

    Great system

    Rich from ND on 6/7/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Extremely easy to set up. It stated that the unit could be interfaced with existing remotes, I thought to myself I've got to see this. It actually worked quickly and easily. I use it at the cabin, it's connected to a Samsung 46" 3D model 7000. I used the fiber optics cord rather than the RCA cables. Everything is included with the system and the sound is MUCH better than the tin can speakers that come with the TV. I've even connected my Ipod to the unit using BT.

Pros: Great sound improvement over the original speakers in the TV. No it's not a 5.1 or 7.1 stereo system, but none the less it works great. I would highly recommend that system to anyone. I would also recommend dealing with Crutchfield, they are very knowledgeable folks.

Cons: Occasionally and I mean occasionally like maybe three to four times the unit's IR's pick up will change to the volume. I have no idea why, but it certainly isn't worth no buying the system. This is the only reason I moved the rating from 5 star to 4 stars.

    Great Sound, Great Deal!

Shane C. from Raleigh NC on 6/4/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have dealt with Crutchfield for years now and have always been happy with my purchases. The same holds true this time. These are true Boston's with that great Boston Acoustics sound. I am very impressed with the tightness of the Sub, great deep bass and highs to be expected for such small cubed front mains. Set up was a breeze. Overall, I was highly impressed and have already recommended these to Friends!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've always been very happy with Boston Acoustics in my vehicles, so I figured I couldn't go wrong with this setup. It really amazed me how much sound you get out of such a small package. I bought this to go with our new 60" in our bedroom and this thing rocks the whole house.

    Excellent Value

PezzVT from Bennington, VT on 5/28/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not the sound you will get from a $1000+ Bose or Yamaha sound system and definitely not what a good surround system would give you. Having said that, for the low price it gives sound far superior to the TV speakers. Clear instructions for setting it up.

Pros: Good sound for an inexpensive price, clear setup instructions. Even included an optical digital sound cable which was unexpected!

Cons: Not sure if this is even a con - the sound not as good as the $1000+ systems but for the money quite acceptable.

Great sound and looks for the price

    Tim from Midwest on 5/20/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a pleasant middle of the road system, especially for a secondary system or for those who are only interested in a smaller system. Plays reasonably loud, decent bass, full sound. I have this for a second tv in our 12' x 20' living room. Well worth the money. The led lights have been complained about in some other reviews, but they are simple to understand if you pay attention to the instructions. Really don't have much need to look at the led's other than when switching from tv to Bluetooth. Very easy to learn my Directv remote, so the factory remote is not normally needed other than for setup or operation of Bluetooth. My only complaint is minor, which is weak Bluetooth reception. I have several Bluetooth audio devices and am very experienced Bluetooth range. My laptop can barely connect 15 feet away.

Pros: Sound quality, variety of inputs, controls.

    Cons: Bluetooth range

    Great Product

Ron from Antioch Ca on 5/19/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So ive seen some of the bad reviews and I disagree with 98% of them. First off let me say yes the Bass (not base) can get a bit "boomy" however if you adjust the sub on the back a bit lower this solves this issue. Also there are two listening modes that if you switch to the other is does lower the bass a bit and that will also help this problem. The Clarity and mid range problems also talked about in the reviews actually improves with the listening mode. I agree that this system is geared more for a smaller room. I do however use this in a larger room, and the sound is nice and clear the only real loss is from the bass. but i mainly use it for tv watching as the speakers on a standard flat tv are not that good. Over all with a little know how and some decent speaker placement this 2.1 system is great and I was even thinking about purchasing another for my sons room.

Pros: compact, easy to set up, sound quality, bass.

Cons: Remote control is a bit flimsy feeling but no big deal once you program a main controller to it.

    Just what I wanted

JD from Buffalo, NY on 4/15/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted an inexpensive sound system for the new LED tv in the den. I was about to go with a soundbar when I found this. No worries of multiple connections, separate amp, etc. Just plug the digital optical output from the tv into the subwoofer, and the speaker wires from the satellite speakers into the subwoofer, and you're done. Setup is simple, sound is terrific. This is not the higher-end surround system, that goes in the living room. This system gets the job done for a huge improvement over the tv speakers.

Better than I could have imagined

Albert from Brevard, NC on 4/14/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this system to upgrade the sound of an older (2008) Sony 40" Bravia LCD, and a sound bar like the Sonos just wouldn't work in the basement family room over the fireplace. When I saw this one at a nice discount from Crutchfield, I thought it might work and also provide music down there. I set it up easily and was very impressed by the sound improvement (I can use the TV's speakers and the system's L/R speakers and Subwoofer together for TV suedo-surround sound). The system allows you to choose this surround option for your TV and a more conventional pure stereo sound for Bluetooth music, and it remembers your setting for each input. With a little practice, the LED feedback begins to make sense. And the TV remote learning program worked very smoothly. The music setting provides very clear sound, and the surround sound for the TV is a big improvement over the TV's built-in speakers, especially the bass, which is not too overpowering, so just the way I like it. The system is so compact and the amp and drivers are all in the subwoofer. Great idea.

Pros: Simple setup Nice design Remote learning function Separate TV and Music settings

Cons: Must read instructions carefully to figure out unit's feedback LED's

    Fantastic sound!

AnnR from West Texas on 4/12/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wanted a small sound system to use with SiriusXM in my new kitchen. This product was so easy and quick to set up and the sound is unbelievable for such a small system. I wish the sub was a little smaller but that is easliy overcome with the superior sound it and small speakers produce. It far exceeded my expectations. I'm ordering the same system to use at another location.

Pros: Small system far exceeded my expectations

Cons: Would have liked the subwoofer to be a bit smaller but the big sound it produces is worth the size.

    Awesome impact

BobB from South Windsor, CT on 4/11/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this system to replace a Yamaha soundbar really didn't do much for me soundwise. The sound is incredible and for the price ($179 and less than the Yamaha) it can't be beat.

Pros: Incredible, full sound, rich bass. Remote IR receiver, so subwoofer does not need to be visible. Bluetooth receiver for IPOD works great.

Cons: No subwoofer bass control on remote. LEDs (volume, etc) are very bright, but only on for a short time when changing selections.

    Not bad for the money

MarkPA from Philadelphia area on 2/27/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very easy to set up out of the box. Components feel quality made and rugged. paper cone on sub does the job but is old school. Sound is pretty good once you get the sub level right, but it can be boomy when too high or placed in a corner. the 2 satellites lack lower midrange and the sub does not do too well with the zone above 80hz and below the 180hz crossover. Likewise, the satellites don't do well with the 180hz to maybe 500hz. So there are noticeable gaps in spectrum. But overall, it delivers a good sound that is definitely better than tv speakers. I am still having problems getting it to link up with Bluetooth though once it is shut off. I can't figure out which combinations of settings, mode, link, etc make it link up and play, a laptop for example, through the speakers, but once it links up it sounds great. Haven't hooked it up to a TV yet. The lights on the control pod are difficult to see from a distance to really know what settings you have selected, but you get the hang of it after a while.

Pros: good power, quality construction, good sound from 3 small speakers. Great value for money, and very convenient to set up and enjoy out of the box

Cons: sound spectrum a bit lacking in midrange. Imaging is a bit poor. Bluetooth doesn't link up very reliably, but when it finally does, it works great.

    Much better than I thought

MG from Peoria, AZ on 2/23/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This speaker system actually turned out to be much better than I thought. I had a gift card, and figured I could use some new speakers for my home computer. The optical input, at the moment, seems to work better than the analog input (not sure why but guessing its something on my computer). The sound is rich, detailed, and spacious especially with higher sampling rates (192/24). I don't use them for gaming though...just music, so i can't speak to how they sound for gaming. Judging from the number of people doing this review, and the number of 5-star reviews, it appears I'm not alone in my opinion that they are good. Remote is a bit temperamental, but i look past it.

Pros: Small enough to use for computer speakers. Also think this would work well enough for tv speakers given the sound I'm experiencing. Or bluetooth for that matter.....maybe a great set to have in the garage to stream music too.

Cons: Can't really think of any. For what it is, seems to be a great deal.

    Excellent Product

    Bryan from Colorado on 2/22/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a replacement sound bar when I came across this product. The price was perfect and even recommended by the Crutchfield Advisor. I bought it from CF because of the guarantee and the ease of a return if necessary. However, no need to return this system. Took 10 minutes to hook up and it even came with an Optical cable. I hooked this thing up and it sounds great! The speakers are attractive looking and the performance is incredible. Music is clear and crisp and movies sound great. Don't expect to be blown out of the house, but you can be confident that your money is well spent. I am real happy I purchased this system and would recommend it to anyone looking for great performance, even in an open room. We have real high ceilings and a wall of windows and the sound is still very good. You wont be disappointed!

    sounds great and looks good

Pros: Easy to set up, once I got some instructions from the both the help desk and the book.

Cons: Had some trouble getting the sound out of the unit, called your help desk and got the unit working.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers were replacements from the Infinity bookshelf speakers we lost in a house fire. I wanted to get something smaller and less obtrusive. Right off the bat you could tell these speakers were well made and solid, I installed these in a 24x22 family room and they sound great!

Pros: Very good audio span, speech is very clear and music sounds balanced. Impressive base, small speaker but powerful sound! I love the optical audio input. Speaker mounting hardware well made!

Cons: I just wish the remote was a bit larger, not just a thin wafer, but that's just my option.

Great 2.1 system. Bass from sub is decent, not too loud but strong.sattelites are clear. Easy to setup. Was torn between this and the sony ht-ct260 soundbar.Glad i got this,my friend ended up buying the soundbar for around 250 and this sounds way better. For the price, I dont think theres a better 2.1 system with optical audio.using for xbox one and games sound good, not really surround sound but still good for stereo.movies also sound better.although any speaker system would have been better than my tv speaker, these really lived up to my expectations, especially after reading all the good reviews. Good bang for the buck!

Pros: Loud Clear Easy setup Good price Small and mountable

Cons: Wired Comes with cheap wires

    Great System

Great sound, very compact. Components seem well made and and solid. Included remote is small and awkward, but after the system is programmed it's really not needed. For this price, haven't found anything that compares!

Pros: Small, good sound, Bluetooth capability.

Cons: Included remote is flimsy, somewhat tricky to program.

    Good functionality - average sound

Holly from Des Moines, IA on 2/17/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price, this sound system works well. We bought it to improve on the sound out of our Samsung 42" flatscreen, which acutally had pretty good sound for a flat screen I thought. This improved it, but doesn't deliver quite the punch I would expect for movies. It did have a much bigger subwoofer than other soundbars for the price, so I'm assuming it should perform better. The Bluetooth works well with my Iphone 4S and Ipad. Music acutally sounds great on it, but the movies just seem a little weak. Wish it had an EQ adjustment but I'm sure that would make it cost more money. It does have a movie/music setting, thought the music setting seemed to work better for loud action movies. The movie setting works better for regular tv. I was also pleased that I was able to get it to respond to my Direct/TV remote. The speakers sit on our mantel just below the TV and are angled slightly up because of their base setting. The speakers did seem to sound a little better when they were pointed straight at us and not angled up. May try to mount on the wall to achieve this.

Pros: Easy to set-up, integrate with existing remote. Good sound for music, everyday TV

    Cons: Average sound for movies.

    High Quality for small dollars.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I absolutely love this set up. It took only minutes to hook up. It sounds as good as anything I have ever used as a surround sound and it is only two tiny speakers accompanied by a small sub. I bought this because the TV. speakers were making the back panel of the TV. vibrate. This was an easy solution to that. The Bluetooth connectivity just adds enjoyment.

Pros: Beautiful sound, Deep sub, Bluetooth.

Cons: Tiny remote. So easy to lose. It is now taped to my TV. Remote

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy set up. Bluetooth was slightly confusing at first but wow what a great sound this system creates. For the price it's definitely beats any Beats system or Bose shelf speaker and I bet it would sound good as a surround sound. I use it in large master bedroom in place of a shelf speaker and the bass and overall sound is incredible.

Pros: Great sound. Great bass. Easy setup. For the price it's unbeatable.

Cons: Bluetooth range is only thirty feet. I found the speaker wires to be slightly on the short side. If I lose the remote the system is practically useless.

    The Best Simple Sound Solution

Mark from Somerset, MA on 2/7/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This system is the best thing I've come across for "home theater". I used to have a real nice 5.1 set up but became sick of all the wires and the speakers getting in the way. I wanted a soundbar solution but the ones I listened to didn't sound that great and I was reluctant to spend over $400 on one and anything less than that is really not worth it. When I saw that this was on sale I took the chance and bought it. This thing puts out very good quality sound, simulates surround sound(don't think it will equal a 5.1 or better set up though), is very easy to setup, hardly any wires, and shuts on and off automatically with the tv. On top of that the bluetooth works great with my iPhone. It also has a 5 year warranty so that shows it's a quality product.

Pros: Sound quality, ease of use, connectivity, small.

    Cons: Ummm, it wasn't free?

    Nice for the price

Sounds great ! I wouldn't pay the retail price, but for this price it can't be beat. Setup was easy. I have a desk top t.v. and I put the control module under it in front of the pedestal with the lights facing upward. The led's are not too bright b/c you see their reflection off the bottom ot the tv. The led colors are a bit confusing,so keep the manuel handy for reference to which mode you're playing, etc. Haven't tried the bluetooth yet. Only concern is the remote battery-a coin type. When/if it needs replaced will I be able to find one? I set the speakers on the desk top on either side of the tv.The sub is smaller than others making it easier to place out of the way.Overall I like this system.

    Pros: Sounds great,compact,easy setup.

Cons: Would be nice to have sub volume built in to remote. If it had this feature I'd give it a 5.

Big sound in a minimal package

User from Alma, CO on 2/2/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This small package from Boston Acoustics really delivers an enjoyable sound. I was looking for a desktop (computer) setup that provided a superior audio experience while providing a clean minimalist look. These easily deliver a sound equal or better than any other desktop speaker in there price range. Although not as immersive or full of depth as my Harmon 7.1 system, Boston has delivered more than enough for an up close desktop setup. With the lack of controls on the speaker themselves they create a super clean look next to an LCD screen. The system is so very simple, and full of features. Easily the best computer speakers I have used, large studio monitors excluded. So bring it on; movies, music, games, these speakers wont disappoint (at close range :-). One added benefit, these speakers do not receive interference from cell phones like so many small speakers. So gone are the days of text messages and phone calls ringing my speakers before my phone. Big thanks to Crutchfield for the continued excellent service and killer deal!

Pros: Clear sound throughout the range of the speakers. Discrete look. Auto power off when input signal stops (unless on Bluetooth, then they just go to pairing/search mode). Easily switches between multiple inputs.

Cons: When pushed near there limits the speakers display a bit of high frequency distortion. Remote not as high quality as the rest of the system.

This system packs quite a punch for it's size. I wanted better sound for watching movies, and this system delivers. Bluetooth is an added bonus since I listen to music during the day while I work. My computer is in the same room which had a HK SoundSticks system, now I use the SoundWare for listening to music as well. I would recommend this system to anyone.

    Pros: Sound, price, Bluetooth, appearance

Cons: This is very minor, but in my opinion, the receiver module is a little clunky and the lights are too bright.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sound system is working out really well with our new wide screen TV. I did not want to have to run wires for a 5.1 system as the new TV room would not lend itself well to that. I have to say I am impressed. The sub puts out enough bass and lower mid-range; while the tiny satellite speakers give out excellent mid and highs. It is easy to set up. The only thing i don't like is the remote and led remote receiver set up. The remote works fine but worries me that it may not hold up. Also, the small LED box that receives the signals from the remote is conspicuously wired to the sub/receiver in plain view. Overall, excellent little system. Recommended.

Pros: Sound, ease of set up, small size.

Cons: remote / LED remote receiver set up.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Due to decorating and appearance concerns, I had seen my TV audio system dwindle from a 3.1 setup with floor standing mains to a 2.1 bookshelf setup before ditching the receiver and external speakers altogether. Yeah, the wife hated bulky speakers, but I'm no audiophile, nor do I care to rattle the house during movies (as opposed to my neighbors, who rattle our house when they watch movies). That said, my wife and I both really like this system so far. Sound is clear, dialogue is good, and I actually had to dial down the gain on the sub to less than the midpoint. No, the little sub isn't going to shake the foundation, but there is plenty of low end fullness, and when the audio calls for a "thump" or "thud", the sound is tight and clear, not muddy. For a simply plug-and-play 2.1 system (with tiny speakers), this system does all I could have hoped for. It certainly fills our open floor plan living area more richly than the TV speakers ever could (not exactly a high standard to beat, I know). My only concern with the system would be the lack controls on the sub itself. The only way to control the system is the little credit card sized remote that it comes with. The learning function to use my other remotes was flawless, but I can't help but feel like it the system will be scrap if you ever lose the remote.

Pros: Substantial upgrade from TV speakers Clear dialogue Easy to program with existing remotes

Cons: No physical switches, dials or buttons on the unit itself, other than a power switch. Could be an issue if anything ever happens to the remote.

    Better than TV speakers-But.....

Mark from St. Louis on 1/27/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are much better than the speakers in the TV, but not what I was hoping for. I am using the 3mm out from the TV to aux input on the sub. The sound settings are a choice of two, Music and Movie. Flat would have been a good option. Neither really sounds great for regular TV programing. Movie just has too much bass unless the adjustment pot on the sub is turned down. Music setting seems to be the best of the two. The bass is pretty muddy and just rumbles a bunch but turning it down makes the system become "Tinny" or empty sounding. If you like big booming bass with little concern for sound balance, these are for you. The remote interfaces with a 4 LED pod that needs to be line-of-sight for it to function. These bright LEDs light up every time the volume or mute buttons are pressed. Seems like this is supposed to add some "Flash" to the product but I find it very annoying. Programing the Dish remote or TV remote is very easy so you really only need the speaker remotes to do setup or change from movie to music settings. My cheaper Creative computer speakers sound better but do not have the remote capabilities. So they went back to my computer.

Pros: Good remote function. Easy to hook up. Build quality.

Cons: LED interface is annoying. Bass is muddy and seems to be carrying too wide a frequency range making it rumble too much.

As far as the sound, this device is OK, nothing fantastic but still OK. The disappointing fact is that when you connect the device to your Satellite TV (DISH) you lose the ability to control the TV from the remote. Instead you have very limited control via the enclosed, miniscule controller that come with the device. In addition this controller does not work at all. You cannot raise the volume, for instance. Product sounds ok for small speakers. I could not get the set up to work properly. The receiver module for the remote control is IR not RF. Because of this the module must be aimed toward the person with the remote control. When activating the remote control the lights on the module are to bright to be actable. On my TV when I when I go into the menu and mute the speakers a window appears on the screen every time you adjust the volume that says NOT AVAILABLE. Between the bright lights and the NOT AVAILABLE window my wife told me to put the TV back like it was. Yes Mam. Sent it back

    Pros: Sounds ok

This product sounds reasonably good, it is a bit lacking on the midrange. However, the bluetooth essentially does not work. More static than music 90% of the time. It does work intermittently. Have tried it with three devices, which stream to other bluetooth devices flawlessly. It does have auxiliary input though, so will probably buy an airport express and stream music that way, which is likely better than the bluetooth method anyway. A great bargain, even without the bluetooth.

I admit, I was a bit skeptical. but when the system went on sale, I just had to try it. I was actually thrilled with the purchase. As a bass player, I liked the punchy lows. I use this in a fairly large bedroom with high ceilings, and it is very much "room filling" and then some!

Pros: Ease of connections, sound quality, and price!

Cons: The only thing that I can think of, is the auto sensing to turn the unit on. Even when manually turned off, it will sense a signal and turn itself back on. Really not a problem as I just turn the volume down on the included remote when I don't want the system on.

(And I feel like a complete idiot, but this was my first time with an optical cord.) Some people have said that the optical doesn't fit well, others have had just OK sound. No where does it tell you this in the instructions, but each end of the optical cord has an almost clear plastic piece that you must pull off, then the plugs will fit and the sound will be great. I love this sound -- much better than the sound bars I've heard. The large sub-woofer is great. Buy it quick before they are sold out.

I bought this for a 50" panasonic plasma upstairs for movies and TV. This is a great purchase for the price! You do not get a full surround experience, but makes your TV sound amazing! You can adjust the bass according to what you are watching (basketball games, you need to turn the bass down!) but any TV shows sound better and movies sound great for the small package low price!

It is simple to connect using the supplied cables and the sound is much better than the sound from TV speakers (volume and quality). The subwoofer and the two satellite speakers produce the sound quality I needed for my TV. I use a surround sound system for my main TV but this three speaker set would also perform well in a larger family room setup if you did not want to invest in a full size soundbar or receiver system. I'm really impressed with the sound quality of this theater system. I had a Klipsch 5.1 surround system which sounded incredible, but of course that's a complete surround system. This Boston Acoustics system is all that I need for my small room. The sound quality is clear, crisp and loud; I don't even have to put the sound level all the way up and it sound extremely good. I'm already thinking of recommending this to family and friends, who I know will enjoy this theater system. I must admit at first I was not satisfied, so I hooked up my Klipsch system, but decided to give the Boston system another chance. I'm so glad that I did. Regards, Jimmy

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS Digital Cinema during the holidays after purchasing a new Samsung 51" plasma and realizing the TV sound was not as good as I wanted. I used to sell audio/video. The store I worked for in college sold Boston and I have always liked it. I purchased a pair of A40's in college and replaced the xover components with higher grade ones--to make the most of my beer budget system (NAD 7020, Rotel CD player). The Boston's came very quickly, just like always from Crutchfield, and the price was hard to beat. Hook up was very easy with an optical digital cable (happily, included with the system). Changing the audio settings on the Samsung to external audio, I quickly had the very good sound that was missing from the Samsung. Boston system was MUCH better. Solid bass, and home speaker-like sound. The satellites response blended smoothly into the sub, making glaring bass localization (usually easy for me when listening to Bose sub-sat systems) forgettable. I was also considering a Yamaha sound bar, as Yamaha always had great DSP sound processing for synthesized surround. The Boston system still images well for a 2.1, but don't expect it too replace the surround fullness of a 5.1 system. It is a very good looking system, but I still think a sound bar would have looked better under the TV. Added bonus was playing music from my iPhone (that I charge on my nightstand) using Bluetooth, replacing the cheesy sounding 'dock' that I had.

Pros: Good sound, solid build, includes optical digital cable, bluetooth, value

Cons: VERY bright LED's on the IR receiver...glaring in low-light of bedroom.

Buy this you won't regret it

I gave this as a Christmas present last year and was she happy. The satellite speakers produce a well balanced sound that filled the living room. The bass amp was a compliment and is included. Only negative Is sometimes it takes effort to connect via a Bluetooth device. Overall a great buy for the price considering what you get.

    Pros: Small.package, big.sound.

    Cons: connectivity may take.several seconds.

Product works very well and really added to our television viewing experience. The remote doesn't seem to have a very far reach though, not sure if the batteries that came with it are almost dead or if some of the other remotes might be interfering with this one. Either way, a great product that would've gotten 5 stars if the remote worked better. Boston Acoustics produces top notch equipment.

Pros: Great sound, great product, easy setup.

Cons: Limited reach for remote, literally only inches.

I got a Bose first, because I believed they were the best. I was wrong , took that unit back the next day. Then I got a Onkyo LS3100 next, alot better then Bose but a little more bass, then I would like for reg. TV shows even all the way down. I still have it, use it on the TV in front room. I got this Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS, because I wanted one for the Man cave. This is the best one and half the price, just right for TV in a reg. house. I think it sounds better then any soundbar I listien to or the other system I talked about. I' am a reg. guy, not the pro that can hear every little sound and wants the 5000.00 sound system. All I can say is this sounds the BEST to me. P.S. I did get Glass optical cables and Monster XPHP speakes wires, did help some.

Pros: Sounds the best to me, just the right amount of bass.

Cons: Could use a wireless subwoofer, alot of wires

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This speaker system has an unbelievably good sound. I had read the reviews before buying, but was still very pleasantly surprised when I first heard how good it sounds. I did have to call Tech Support for help with connecting it to my TV, but since I had also purchased my TV from Crutchfield, the advisor knew exactly how to help me, and in just a few seconds we had it connected. I did not even have to be on hold to get a tech, as he came on the line immediately. The problem I had was that I was too dumb to find the optical output on the TV. The only negative I would have to mention is the intensity of the display lights on the whatever-it's-called thing that the remote control communicates with. The lights are so bright that I'm sure they can be seen across the street by the neighbors. It reminds me of a traffic signal. I placed black electrical tape over the lights to dim their brightness, and that solved the issue. I can still see them well enough that they serve their purpose without blinding me. I bought the speaker system after Christmas, and it was on sale. I had previously seen it for more but when I saw the Crutchfield price, I ordered immediately. It's a fantastic system and sounds like it should have cost lots more.

Pros: Small size, low price, excellent sound, ease of installation with Crutchfield's phone assistance; the bass is awesome. I have Apple TV and have already listened to iTunes Radio thru the system, and it sounds fantastic. I can't wait to stream and movie and hear how good the sound is.

Cons: Traffic Signal light bar--lights are way too intense, and are almost laughable. Black electrical tape placed over the lights solved the issue, however.

This is a great little sound system. I was looking a similar Onkyo system at a competitors store. When I saw the pricing of this system I had to try it out. I am glad I did. It has good sound and was easy to hook up to my TV.

Cons: My TV remote was a little difficult to set up with the system. (The remote that came with it works great)

    Dissapointed With Control of Unit

Chris J from Baltimore, MD on 1/2/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My issue with this system and the reason I plan on returning it is the overall control of the unit. The LED light bar is odd and extremely bright. It doesn't stay lit - but it is hard to look at to see the current mode. The remote works fine, but I started having issues when I turned the unit OFF with the remote to watch TV (as I really only want it on to watch movies). With the optical cable connection to the TV, the unit senses the audio output and comes back on. My round-about fix for this was to change the input of the unit to the RCA (which nothing was connected to). This worked to keep the TV from turning the unit on. However, once I turned the TV off (just by pressing the TV power button and not the TV remote), the unit came back on again. It would then cycle between on and off for no apparent reason - maybe interference from the open RCA input? It wouldn't do it when OFF on the optical input. A simple ON/OFF button that cuts power or doesn't come on upon sensing audio signal would remedy this issue for me. There is a switch on the back of the sub for this but it is not reachable in my setup. One other issue to note is about programming your TV remote to control the unit. When you do this, the LED bar will light up to show the volume changing which may be annoying for everyday TV watching. I also discovered that with my TV (a 4 yr old Panasonic plasma) that turning the TV speakers off pops up a dialog when you change the volume that says they are off.

Pros: The compact design is great and the flexibility of the speaker mounting is nice compared to a sound bar. I liked the sound quality for the most part - the bass is awesome. However I would like some adjustment to get a little more treble. I did experience deeper voices coming through the sub which is very thunderous - I had the sub set at half level and turning it down would probably help this.

    Cons: Control issues outlined above.

I did a lot of online research before purchasing this system, and am really confused by all the great reviews. This speaker system produced great bass, but really flat highs and tinny mid tones. I was very disappointed when I compared it side by side with my 25 year old Bose Acoustimass 3 system. The entire family thought the Bose produced much better, richer sound. Shipped the system back to Crutchfield on day 2. Maybe I just got a defective system. - ?

These speakers are a tremendous value. I needed something to upgrade the sound of my Samsung 32" LED TV, which was absolutely terrible, and these speakers have done the job. Even though there is no center channel, these speakers do a great job of making it possible to clearly hear the dialogue on TV shows and movies. Additionally, the subwoofer packs quite a punch. The one thing that is lacking with these speakers is mid range, but for the price these speakers do sound quite good overall.

After I received the replacement, it took a while to get it to work. Now it's intermittent because the optical cable is not a great fit in the jack, and often needs to be pushed in tighter. When working, very pleased with the sound quality.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This little speaker system rocks! I received it took it out of the box and it was working within 10 minutes. I have it in a bedroom, hooked up to a 42 inch tv. What a difference it made. Compared to just having the tv speakers. The remote learning capability, and the Bluetooth. Is what makes it so nice . It has very good sound quality. And it is built with quality of much more expensive BA products. I think that this is a great item to add for your tv viewing experience.

Pros: The size of the speakers. They are almost invisible. The Bluetooth is so nice for listening to my I tunes. And the learning remote is really easy to use. And it is really small. Plus with all of the mount brackets and accessories the cube speakers can be mounted virtually anywhere. The optical cable is just another plus. This speaker system is well worth the$249.00 price tag. And you can't beat Crutchfield for their knowledge of products, and their sped of service. I'll be back.

Cons: It is not made to be used in a large room. There is a limit to how loud it will get. Other than that I see no problems.

Exceptional Product for Simple Sound Applications

Mark H. from Fairfax, VA on 11/26/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Everything depends on your application. In my case we created a get away library room with super comfortable sofa for quiet reading, background music, and some TV. My wife's guidance to me was: I don't want to see the speakers and I just want to be able to use my iPhone or iPad and fill the room with nice background music. So with an all black library unit, a black LED 39" TV, an Apple TV and the BA Soundware, I achieved my task. Virtually invisible, but with very good sound, we can now go into our library with just an iPad, iPhone or Mac and listen/watch anything we want with no amplifier, no cable box, and no hassle. The Bluetooth connection works instantly, and the streaming is great. Mind you I have a very expensive full blown 80" TV and massive amp/speakers elsewhere in the house, but for simple music and TV/movie watching elsewhere, the Soundware is a fantastic bargain. Also, I'm a big Bose fan, but the Bose Bluetooth systems didn't have the simple digital audio input the Soundware had for the TV (very dumb of Bose). And of course, buying from Crutchfield was easy as always.

Pros: Small and easily hidden, great sound, easy Bluetooth connections

This little unit packs a lot of punch. I moved into an older house and couldn't use my 5 channel surround system without either fishing wires through the walls or taking down the crown moulding. This system sounds great and is a perfect boost to standard TV sound systems. I even need to turn it down on some movies. At this price point, it is an amazing value.

Pros: Small footprint, convenient set up, awesome sound.

Cons: It is alway on. If you put it in sleep, it will wake up if you change the TV volume. I just turn if off when I don't need all the power this unit puts out. Must use the remote to adjust sound but it gets loud. There is only 3 little lights showing you sound level. Even with all lights showing it can still get much louder. I guess that is a pro.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using the Boston Acoustic Soundware with my Samsung 60" HD. I've been using it for about a month am very pleased with the full sound I am experiencing. Very easy to hook up and get going in a matter of a few minutes. I'm still messing with the proper location to get the ideal best bass but if left where it is I'd still be very happy with the sound. I don't use the TV sound at all but that's a matter of taste. One of the reasons that I purchased this sound system as opposed to a sound bar is that I wanted to be able to use the top shelf of my Bell'O entertainment unit for equipment and I am happy with the decision I made. And the price could not be beat. This is a lot of quality sound for the money. I know some of the other reviewers complained about the Pod. It would be nice if you could have a visible sound level indicator--I don't find it to be a big deal.

Pros: Great sound, easy to set up

Cons: the remote is ridiculously small--credit card small and therefore easy to misplace if your are not careful. Or you have kids who don't put things back where they belong. A word of caution: lose it---lose control.

Decent 2.1 Surround for the Sale Price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my bedroom TV. I only use it for my TV and have not yet tried linking it to my iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth, so I can't speak on how well that works. Overall, it has very good sound for having such small speakers. It definitely is a step up from my TV's built-in speakers. The two things that I am not extremely fond of are the IR module and the remote. The IR module is lightweight plastic and requires the included self-adhesive tape to stay in place. I think Boston Acoustics could have done a better job designing a more attractive and heavier IR module that could sit on top of the TV stand like the Bose Cinemate IR module. The remote is also cheap-appearing, but I was able to program my TV's remote to replace the basic functions, so I don't even use it. However, as I bought this during the 50% off promotion, I consider it a good purchase for a basic 2.1 surround system that is good for small entertainment rooms and/or bedrooms.

Pros: Good Sound; Small, Stylish Speakers

Cons: Lightweight, Cheap-Looking IR Module and Remote

These speakers provide phenomenal quality for the great price! They provide a very rich and full sound for my dormitory. The setup was quite simply and getting my Iphone synced with the Bluetooth was incredibly easy. Great Buy!

Pros: Sound Bass-Mids-Highs Size Price Look

Cons: A little more physical setting up than expected.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit to upgrade from my old, bought used insignia soundbar. I'm super pleased with this units sound. I'm not a fan of "budget" home theater.. I think one must spend a significant amount money, and time for a good sounding set up. I don't have a lot of either of those things, so at the budget I was shopping for, I actually find that i prefer a 2.1 stereo system. I'm very familiar with the Boston Acoustics name, and I've heard many of their products. Most other systems that use this same configuration, two "mini" (1 left,1 right) speakers, use full range design drivers, which I find somewhat lacking at times. These speakers have a separate mid driver, and tweeter. They provide the midrange, and sparkling airy treble , and the small, but powerful woofer, supplies the bass . This little system sounds way better than i expected, doesn't have a bunch of fancy" fake" surround modes to fiddle with. Hook up is a snap, sound coherent, balanced, snappy, tuneful with music, or movies. The one negative I have , and it could just be me, is the ease of programming the speakers to work with my remote. I'm still fooling with it, but the included remote is fine, and very simple to operate. That's my only reason for not giving this item a 5star rating.

Pros: stellar sound, super easy setup, flexible placement !

Cons: the "learning feature" of the unit seems a little confusing

    Great sound, remote dissapoints

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This system produces excellent sound for such a compact system. Good clarity and projection during dialog scenes and booming bass during action scenes. An excellent complement to a big screen plasma or led. My biggest complaint is with the remote setup. Neither my Directv remote or my Samsung tv remote would sync with the system causing my remote pile to grow. The IR receiver is another low point to the system. Unless you have good place to hide it, which fortunately I do, the bulky IR receiver could be an eyesore. Previously had a Samsung 450 Soundbar and this system blows it away.

Pros: Excellent sound, compact size, stylish satellite speakers.

Cons: Remote pairing is limited, bulky IR receiver.

    Great value

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very satisfied with this purchase. I recently purchased a 50" Vizio 3D HDTV and downsized from a Yamaha 5.1 surround sound system (approx 6 yrs old) that didn't have hdmi or Bluetooth capability. I wanted a 5.1 soundbar but the size would have blocked the ir sensor on the tv. The Soundwave XS Digital is very compact and blends in well with the tv. Sound is great for a compact system. I especially like the Bluetooth interface with the iPad. All the wiring is hidden behind the tv console. Not impressed with the IR sensor, which is wired to the bass unit . Overall the system greatly improves the tv speaker sound. I haven't put the sound to the test with a movie yet to see how the "simulated surround sound" works.

Pros: Compact, easy to connect to tv. Large sound. Bluetooth interface to iPad. Easy to teach your tv and cable remotes commands.

Cons: Wired IR sensor. No visual indication of sound level.

    Nice, but . . .

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My wife wanted small speakers rather than bookshelf models and the XS Digital Cinema sure fit the bill. They look very cute perched either side of the screen. The subwoofer blends in nicely with the center of the media cabinet on a lower shelf. Total success from that point of view. The sound is very decent, although I don't get all the fake-o surround sound as advertised - but I'm not really complaining 'cos I don't watch many of those kind of films and for most of the music I listen to they're far more than adequate, although they labored a bit with heavy club remixes. Generally, I'm enjoying listening to music on them. The big drawback for me is the complete lack of any kind of visual representation of how loud you have 'em turned up along with the difficulty of access to the bass control knob. True, once you've set the bass level that's pretty much it - but every so often you want to mess with it and it's not easy like a traditional amp. Likewise with the volume control. I may be old fashioned but I'd love a knob or a bar or something to look at to let me know just how much of a soundblast I'm about to be exposed to. A blinking green light doesn't really cut it, although the true mods of today will surely control the thing through their iPods (or whatever) and use the volume control (with visual feedback) on that device. There's a bit of a learning curve if you're used to classic gear. Easy to set up. Bluetooth works fine. Good value at sale price. Not sure at full.

    Pros: Good looking. Decent sound.

Cons: Control system is a bit of a learning curve and lack of visual representation of volume level.

System arrived and was just as described on the website. Very compact and plugs directly into TV. Bluetooth capable to stream music from phone or tablet thru this speaker system. Small lightweight speakers make mounting a cinch. Very pleased with the bass from the subwoofer. Great product!

Pros: Compact, lightweight, packs a punch for such a small system

    Cons: None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After researching a few different sound bar systems I chose this system and I'm very impressed and pleased with the sound quality of the SoundWare XS. If you want to substantially upgrade the sound of you flat panel TV with a compact system without the hassle of another audio tuner or a DVD 5.1 system then this is really a great package. It was very simple to program the TV remote and the satellite box remote allowing you to use one remote to operate all three components. The Bluetooth streaming is a nice feature and my I pads, I phone and my wife's Samsung all paired easy. Nice job Boston Acoustic.

Pros: Great sound, simple setup, Bluetooth streaming

    Cons: None

Good, not great, but it meets its purpose!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased for my daughter's room. I was looking to sound bar alternatives that could play her iPod / iPhone music and that also works for movie watching. I connected this equipment to the TV optical out using supplied cable. Blu-Ray is connected to the TV via HDMI. Streaming music via Bluetooth. I am satisfied by its features, but not from its sound. For my daughter is ok & could be ok for my bedroom, but my Energy's Micros & a Denon entry level receiver there sounds better than this, but occupies more space and requires more connections... here is where this system shines! So, if you are not so picky for great sound, this system is truly an alternative to sound bars with its compact size, loud and punchy sound and Bluetooth connection... it beat most of the sound bars out there!

Pros: Compact & easy to connect Can decode Dolby Digital Plenty of mounting options Play loud. Punchy sub for its size Bluetooth Audio Streaming works flawlessly Great warranty (5 yrs)

Cons: Far from being Hi-Fi Uneven frequency response Hard to read system status info.. archaic implementation! Not so useful Music / Movie Playback modes

    Great system

These speakers sound amazing, given their small footprint. Having had Boston Acoustics floor standing speakers in the past, I expected nothing less. Setup was didn't take more than 10 minutes. I am taking away a star, however, because the remote and sensor device are not that easy to operate.........and the instruction manual is somewhat confusing on that very subject. Hopefully, that part will get easier with time.

Pros: Small si and excellent sound for limited space

Cons: Sensor device and remote control.

Love the system - amazing sound from such a small footprint. Like it so much in my workout room I bought another one for the patio/pool deck. Set up was easy.

Pros: Great sound. Great base. All the cables you need are included (which is unusual these days). Even comes with speaker wall mounts. Bluetooth/RCA connection allows me to use my newer Bluetooth equipment (iPhone) and my older mp3 equipment.

Cons: My only complaint is the Bluetooth range is not very good but works for what I need.

Great TV speakers for the bedroom

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are great, inexpensive speakers for my television and they work well as Bluetooth speakers as long as I'm not too far away from them or if there is not something else interfering with them. Setup was very simple, and the instructions were easy to follow. Beware, the optic cable is short, and almost didn't make from the wall-mounted TV to the sub. The speakers are very loud and clear. Midrange could be better, but I wouldn't expect much more from the small cubes. It took a while to get the right setting (digital audio output) on my TV set top box. The volume was only about 1/3 what I could get when using Bluetooth or my DVD player. Now that it is set correctly, I can crank the tv up so loud it wouldn't be bearable.

Pros: Good sound and priced right.

    Cons: Short cable

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this package to use with my home computer. The sound is incredible. The satellite units sit on the desk (for now, until I mount them) and each is hardly the size of a coffee cup. I used the fiber optic audio connection from my sound card to connect to the back of the sub with the supplied cable. There are very few wires and everything is mostly invisible. From the sealed box to initial sounds from the computer was about 15 minutes total.

Pros: Fantastic sound in a very small package. The sub fit under the desk with plenty of room to spare. The mounting hardware for the satellites will make them nearly invisible. Very easy hookup and all the wiring was supplied.

    Cons: Have not found any.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these speakers for my 32" TV. I thought these would be great for a smaller tv and also to save space because of their small size they are a good solution. After listening to these I was happy with the sound from the speakers, but very disappointed with the bass I got from the subwoofer. I actually was expecting the sub to be one of the more impressive features in this package because of the price. My Klipsch speakers I currently use was $100 cheaper and same 2.1 setup with much better sound.

Pros: Good speakers with pretty good clarity Bluetooth Easy setup

Cons: Poor sub sound quality Price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The system was purchased in June 2013.The soundware XS has good sound for a two speaker / subwoofer system. I wanted a system that did not overwhelm the room with large equipment and sounded good. My living room is 23x18 foot. This system did the job. I wanted to improve the sound from the television speakers The movies sound very good. Big improvement..!!. I also can play my I-Pod on this system. On several reviews I noted people complaining about the control pod not sitting upright so the remote can operate the system. I had no problem.Mine sits right under my television (which I bought from Crutcfield). The only con I see is there is no display on the system to see how low or high your volume is. You just press up and down and just listen. Not a big deal. If you are looking for 5.1 or 7.1 sound this is not the system for you. If you want good sound with not alot of equipment. This system will do the job.

Pros: So far so good....All cables come with the system...Very easy to set up.... took only fifteen minutes from box to playing movies. Sounds Good...!!!

    Cons: Needs a volume display.

I was very satisfied with their sound reproduction. My TV sound improved a great deal but playing my ipod music which includes Western and Indian classical music. It played the classical music with great clarity. The speaker installation is very simple, it took me less than 20 minutes to set it up. I would have rated these speakers five but remote display is simple indication and does not give any indications if sound level is being raised or lowered.

Pros: Very simple installation and good quality of sound reproduction.

    Cons: Remote indication needs improvement.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

System sounds great, and fills a large area well. We have it in a small TV room (18 X 12) that joins another 1,000+ sq ft area and the music more than fills the entire area well. Plenty of low end to fill a large room at moderate volume. Movie sound is great for a 3 box system. Vocals on TV sound good. Music quality is great. Tight, natural sound. Blue tooth range is a bit fussy. Could be interference in my house.

Pros: Fit & Finish Sound Quality is great for music and TV - fills a large room very well (better that Sonos 5) System set up simplicity Easy to change inputs to speaker

Cons: Bluetooth range isjust OK - could be interference in my house Bluetooth setup for new devices or switching between BT devices can be a bit fussy and take a few attempts remote module is a necessary evil Lights on remote module are annoying (mostly when just changing volume) - Otherwise intuitive

Great product for the money. I wanted the flexibility of a bedroom system for TV watching, occasional blu ray and games via PS3, and streaming music from an Apple TV or iPhone. This system does it all, does it all well, and I use it all. Powerful enough to function as a stand alone system in an apartment or most people's living room. I can shake the bedroom to the core with the pop of the sub. It hits hard. One of the best bang for the buck purchases I ever made. Do not hesitate to buy this. Nothing at this price point is close for sound and versatility.

Pros: Easy set up Sound Value Features and versatility

After 10 years my surround sound needed replacement but I just did not want speakers all over place so I decided to go another route. Not satisfied with my TV speakers I needed an upgrade. Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS Digital Cinema provided a significant upgrade over my TV Speakers. Speakers were easy to set up approximately 10 minutes. The powered sub is tiny buts pack the necessary punch. The music mode is a nice feature as the digital music stations sound great. Overall this product is solid, but no three speaker system can fully replace a full surround sound system but I knew this before I started comparing systems. This system is better than the Sound bars I listen to (Polk & Sony) and has provide both the sound quality and clean look that I wanted. The speakers are virtually invisible. I would recommend to anyone looking to upgrade their TV sound or anyone who is looking to get rid of the surround sound system clutter

Pros: Easy Intall clean look good sound

Cons: Could not program my TV or Cable remote & the control box need to be visible to use the system remote

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This system works as advertised. I found the setup to be easy, and was up and running in no time. I primarily use my iPad over Bluetooth to drive this system. The audio quality is very high. In addition to Bluetooth, I have also used the optical input, which worked without any problems. I use this for music stored on my tablet as well as for streaming music from the Internet. Both sound great. The sub is compact but, still packs enough punch to sound great. Boston Acoustics has created a very nice package for someone looking for a complete speaker system for use with a cell phone or tablet. All of the hardware needed to mount the speakers is included in the box, as well as various cables that you may need to connect your components. The only complaint I have is with the LEDs on the control unit. They go out after a short time and it is difficult to know if the unit is on or off without a status LED. I would recommend this system to anyone who wants an easy way to listen to music from a Bluetooth enabled device.

Pros: Audio quality Many cable options are included in the box Mounting hardware is in the box Easy to set up and use

Cons: Status LEDs do no stay on long enough

    I enjoy this system

I live in a smaller apartment in Boston and these speakers are exactly what i wanted. I wanted a system similar to a sound bar, but with multiple inputs so i could listen to music as well. This fit the bill to a T. Sound is amazing, sub is very powerful for its size. The only thing i would nitpick is the sensor for the remote, which everyone else nitpicks as well. It is a little bit of a pain to get it to stand up correctly. Other than that if you want a moderately priced speaker system this is great. Not sure how well it works in bigger rooms, but it works very well in my apartment.

Pros: sound, very easy to set up

Cons: sensor is a pain in the butt

2.1 Digital Cinema: The Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS Digital Cinema home theater system delivers an instant audio performance upgrade for your flat screen TV and comes in a compact package. This 2.1 virtual surround sound system features two diamond-shaped satellite speakers with articulating wall brackets, as well as a powerful subwoofer for deep bass. It also includes two sets of analog AUX inputs for additional sources, dedicated movie and music playback modes, and Bluetooth compatibility for wireless music streaming. The system also includes a convenient credit-card size IR remote control.

Digital Optimized Virtual Surround (DOVS): Boston's Digitally Optimized Virtual Surround (DOVS) technology makes an authentic cinema surround sound experience possible with just two channels and a subwoofer. DOVS decodes the full, Dolby Digital 5.1 channel audio signal from the source material and applies a proprietary process to derive the ideal 2.1-channel version of the original surround sound mix.

Dual SoundWare XS Satellites: The Boston Acoustic SoundWare XS Digital Cinema features two matching ultra-compact satellite loudspeakers. The SoundWare XS satellite speakers are incredibly small, yet provide high performance sound. Unlike many satellite speakers, the SoundWare XS satellites are true two-way speakers with a separate mid-bass driver and tweeter that offers a 150Hz to 20kHz frequency response. Each Boston Acoustic SoundWare XS satellite speaker features a high performance 1/2" fabric dome tweeter and a high performance 2-1/2" treated paper mid-bass driver with a rubber surround. The satellite speakers employ an acoustic suspension (sealed) enclosure for detailed, accurate performance. Each SoundWare XS satellite speaker features a pair of gold-plated spring-loaded speaker terminals that will accept up to 16-gauge speaker wire.

Powered Subwoofer w/ BassTrac Circuitry: The powered subwoofer is equipped with a 250-watt amplifier which drives the subwoofer and the two connected satellite speakers. The powered subwoofer features a front-firing 8" graphite injected polymer woofer with foam surround, which utilizes Deep Channel Design (DCD) for increased bass response. DCD is a deeply grooved pole plate that enables the voice coil of the subwoofer to travel farther for greater output without bottoming out. The powered subwoofer uses an acoustic suspension (sealed) enclosure for tight, accurate bass output. The powered subwoofer utilizes BassTrac circuitry for tight, distortion-free bass at all output levels.

Note: All of the system's connections (analog & digital) are found on the rear-panel of the powered subwoofer.

Music/Movie Playback Modes: With separate movie and music playback modes, you can tailor the sound to suit the content. In movie mode, enjoy crisp, clear movie dialog and powerful cinematic special audio effects; while music mode delivers concert-quality music reproduction. And after you set this option once, the system automatically remembers your setting for next time.

Remote Control: A credit card-size IR remote is included for setting up and controlling the system. The credit-card remote can also be used to program the system's external IR control pod to your television's remote. After the system is programmed to work from your own TV's remote, the supplied remote can still work as a backup.

Subwoofer Volume: In addition to the system's main volume control, the powered subwoofer features a separate level control to increase or decrease the system's bass output.

Auto Power On/Off: The powered subwoofer will turn on automatically when an audio input signal is received and off several minutes after the audio signal stops.

Digital Input: The Boston Acoustic SoundWare XS Digital Cinema is fitted with a digital optical (toslink) input to connect your flat-panel TV. Since there is only one digital input, connect your Blu-ray player & Satellite/Cable box to your television and then connect your TV's digital output to the SoundWare XS Digital Cinema.

Analog Input: The SoundWare XS Digital Cinema also features a stereo RCA input and stereo minijack input to connect additional analog sources, such as a portable MP3 player.

Note: All of the system's connections (analog & digital) are found on the rear-panel of the powered subwoofer.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Digital Cinema features built-in Bluetooth (v2.1+EDR) and supports the Bluetooth A2DP (v1.2) profile. The SoundWare XS Digital Cinema system allows you to stream audio from your Bluetooth enabled device; such as your Apple iOS device, Android device, smartphone, tablet, or MP3 player. The Digital Cinema system can be paired to more than one device (although only one such device can play music via Bluetooth at one time). Once you have paired your device, the 2.1ch system will automatically search for available paired devices when you select the unit's Bluetooth input. Typical range is up to 33 feet.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Boston Acoustic Digital Cinema.

AC Power: The included powered subwoofer will need to be plugged into an AC wall outlet or surge protector.

    Mounting Options

Placement: The Boston Acoustic SoundWare XS satellite speakers feature MagnaGuard magnetic shielding which ensures the speaker's magnetic field does not interfere with a television's picture. The Boston Acoustics SoundWare satellites are compact, high performance speakers that can be placed virtually anywhere. Their unique geometric shape & design gives you multiple mounting and placement options, so you can place them on a shelf or mount them on a wall at almost any angle. The supplied mounting hardware allows you to mount the speakers flush against the wall, and the pivoting mounting bracket lets you aim the sound where you want it. Each speaker also includes a 1/4"-20 threaded insert for aftermarket wall-mount brackets or stands, and a tab for attaching a security device.

Mounting Hardware: Included with each satellite speaker is an assortment of mounting hardware. Two metal keyhole-slot brackets are included; one for a flat wall and one for a corner. If you use a keyhole-slot bracket, you must attach the supplied pivoting ball mount to the speaker. The pivoting ball mount allows the speaker to pivot 20° in either direction and pivot down up to 40° when mounted to a flat wall. The optional corner mount bracket will not allow the speaker to pivot side-to-side. A set screw keeps the speaker from moving once it has been positioned.

It depends whether your TV remote is programmable to control other devices. If it is it should control this speaker system. I am using my programmable Harmony 680 remote to control the Boston Acoustic SoundWare XS Digital Cinema speakers in my bedroom. [ RICHARD  Jul 31, 2014 ]
It depends on the TV and if it supports variable optical output volumes....even if it does you need the Boston remote to change inputs. Or you could get a good universal logitech harmony remote to control everything.including the Boston soundwave which is what I bought them and programmed it as this was a gift for a friend anyhow. [ ANDREW  Jul 26, 2014 ]
You can program your tv remote to turn it on. You can also have it turn on when the tv turns on. [ ANTOINE  Jul 24, 2014 ]
I bought this system about a year ago,Brad. As long as your remote is programmable, I would think you could since it is infrared. If not, it is worth it to use two remotes. Its a great sounding system for the price! [ JAMES  Jul 24, 2014 ]
The optical cable I received is 72" as best I can measure [ WAYNE  Jul 14, 2014 ]
    About 6 ' [ RICHARD W  Jul 13, 2014 ]
Not sure Eugene as I haven't received the merchandise yet. [ HUBERT  Jul 12, 2014 ]
Yes,there are several simple ways you can set it up to limit the system to your blu-ray player. One way would be to set TV speaker to on and turn volume down on external speakers. [ JOE C  Apr 02, 2014 ]
You can connect the system directly to the blueray player. [ JULIO  Apr 01, 2014 ]
Yes there are several ways to hook up. Very versatile, but fiber optics is the best. [ ANTOINE  Apr 01, 2014 ]
It depends on the o/p of your TV. If plugging something into "audio out" turns OFF the speakers on the TV you'll need another ioutput. On a Samsung it works just fine. If you want to use the TV speakers just don't turn on the Boston system. Using the Boston system just turn the TV volume all the way down (not mute because it'll show the mute icon). Using it this way it doesn't matter where the signal is coming from to the TV because the Boston only "sees" the TV signal. You can also use bluetooth, provided you have a "smart" BRP. [ KEVIN  Apr 01, 2014 ]
    I don't know,however you'd probably in up preferring the sound of the Bostons.Mark [ MARK A  Apr 01, 2014 ]
Yes you can, it has different connections, RCA, and blutooth and optical and I think even head phone jack size plug inputs. I'm sure your blue ray player has optical output. This is a cool reliable discreet system. [ MARIO L  Apr 01, 2014 ]
no, the connectors are dedicated and the amp is smaller than in the 5.1 set, I gave this to a friend as a present [ ANDREW  Mar 29, 2014 ]
I'm not sure. It sounds like it might work. I just have a normal installaiotn. You should ask the Cruthcfield team. They are very helpful. [ RICARDO  Mar 19, 2014 ]
I'm not expert on the electronics of it, but I doubt it. The whole set-up is sort of integral to itself and just a little bit fiddly. First thing to do would be to check whether the amp could drive another pair of speakers by calculating the total resistance. (Formula easily found on the net.) For sure, you are not going to get 5.1 sound. The whole point of this system is that it is small and discrete. I will also add that, having used it now for maybe six months, I don't like it as much as a regular old-fashioned amp with display and large volume knob. Controlling the volume is a pain, especially between different functions. [ JONATHAN D  Mar 18, 2014 ]
I returned the item because it did not meet my expectations in terms of my needs. [ ANGEL A  Mar 18, 2014 ]
No, this connects direct to the TV. [ MICHAEL D  Feb 04, 2014 ]
No, It connected to the TV via audio output jacks on back of the TV. [ KARL  Jan 27, 2014 ]
No, you need to read the description and reviews. [ LLOYD  Jan 26, 2014 ]
No ,you can connect this speakers directly to a tv with digital output or RCA output [ JORGE A  Jan 26, 2014 ]
No you do not. This unit is fully self powered. All you need to do is connect your audio sources (optical, RCA, mini or Bluetooth. You control volume via the mini remote. The sound is VERY GOOD! Caution:this unit would not work with my Direct Tv remote thus I need both remotes...big pain...because of this I returned mine. I do miss it. [ Steven  Jan 26, 2014 ]
    No [ LARRY F  Jan 26, 2014 ]
No reciver needed. Wire connects directly to the subwoofer and also the speakers connect to the subwoofer. [ TOMASZ  Jan 26, 2014 ]
    No, this is a self powered 2.1 speaker system. [ DENISE P  Jan 26, 2014 ]
I haven't set mine up yet, but I read the manual, and you don't need a receiver. The subwoofer acts as they amplifier/receiver for the two mini-cube speakers. You connect the powered subwoofer to the TV audio out (either by optical cable--6' supplied--or by RCA connectors, also supplied, I think). I ordered an extra long optic cable because of my set-up constraints. This really fits my situation well, just need to get to the house to install it. [ ALBERT  Jan 26, 2014 ]
No you do not. Just plug in to the back of your tv with an optical audio cable for best sound or you can use RCA cables for older tvs. U can Blue Tooth ur music to it as well from ur ph on tablet or PC/ Laptop. [ AARON  Jan 26, 2014 ]
You don't need to connect to a receiver but we had trouble connecting directly to the TV, we had to make the connection at the cable box. [ FRANK  Jan 26, 2014 ]
No sir! It will hook directly to your TV easily. [ JAMES  Jan 26, 2014 ]
No you do not. All you need is an audio out of your tv. For instance digital or av audio output will do. [ NATHANIEL  Jan 26, 2014 ]
    No [ RICHARD W  Jan 26, 2014 ]
No, but you need to be sure that you have a digital optical or standard RCA audio output on your TV. If not you can get adapters to convert to either one of those formats that are supported by the speaker system. I had a digital audio RCA output which would require an adapter, but just hooked up to the directv box with the optical cable instead [ Jay  Jan 26, 2014 ]
No I have mine hooked directly to my TV [ JOHN  Jan 26, 2014 ]
No you don't need a receiver. I use blue tooth and TV output to power the speakers. The sound is fantastic [ CHRIS  Jan 26, 2014 ]
There is an extension cable with a dock receiver that you can place in any area you consider viewable by your remote. The extension cable is connected to the main subwoofer. In the description there is the length of the cable so you can evaluate your setup before buying. [ ALFREDO  Feb 20, 2014 ]
The remote receiver is located in the control pod which connects to the subwoofer via cable. IR remote controller included. Your TV or cable box remote can be programmed to work with the speakers, however, I have not yet done that. [ CORNELIUS  Jan 24, 2014 ]
The receiver is the oval thing with the green light. All the components, I.e., speakers and receiver, are connected from the subwoofer. Overall, this system is a great replacement for my bulky soundbar. [ Scott  Jan 22, 2014 ]
The ir receiver connects to the sub via a 6' cable. The receiver can be placed anywhere, and they include adhesive to mount it. I am actually returning the system because I don't want another remote to switch sources. Getting a new receiver instead with normal speakers. [ PETER J  Jan 20, 2014 ]
The sensor for the remote control is located on the control pod. The control pod is connected to the sub woofer. [ Aaron  Jan 20, 2014 ]
It's located in the control pod and it is IR. [ Carroll  Jan 20, 2014 ]
Thank you Susan, good info! [ Lost in America  Jan 16, 2014 ]
Thanks Derek, I was thinking the same thing, but you never know... [ Lost in America  Jan 16, 2014 ]
Haven't done so, but I can see nothing stopping you. Both s and xs speakers are 8 Ohm, similar to hooking up different speakers to one's receiver in the good old days. Should be able to hook up just about any 8 ohm speakers really, might try that tonight with some old BA bookshelf speakers I have, just for fun. Also, if the x vs xs sensitivities are different, you may need to readjust the subwoofer level to balance with the possibly louder or softer "s", but that's the only issue I could foresee. [ SUSAN  Jan 16, 2014 ]
Provided you are using the same standard speaker wire gauge I don't see why not. [ Derek  Jan 16, 2014 ]
Good sound especially for the price. Easy to set up and worked well with my existing remotes. My only complaint is that the LEDs on the remote receiver are very bright and somewhat annoying when turning up the volume. [ Michael  Jan 16, 2014 ]
Yes, if you old TV has a headphone jack (3.4mm) then you can get a cable (3.5mm to 3.5mm)to connect. [ Christopher  Mar 02, 2014 ]
It depends on whether you have an audio out connection. If you have an audio jack, you will need to get some adapters at Crutchfield or a local electronics store to go from whatever outputs your TV has to the 3.5mm (headphone style) inputs on the XS. [ Peter  Jan 17, 2014 ]
Yes just need either a digital audio output or RCA outputs. [ Gerald  Jan 17, 2014 ]
As long as your TV has an audio out you can use this speaker set. This set uses a fiber optic and a analog input (red & white RCA connectors). The instructions are well written and include a fiber optic cable and analog cable to connect to your TV or receiver. [ Michael  Jan 16, 2014 ]
Not sure. I remember old TV sets had only two outputs for speakers, and nothing for subwoofer. This model has an option not to use optic cable but I am not sure how it will fit with older TV. Also, since I did not try it I don't know how the quality of the sounds is going to be. You may just use two speakers with better quality compare to TV set speaker. [ MICHAEL  Jan 16, 2014 ]
The magnet in the speaker will distort a tube type TV picture if it placed too close to it. Installation manual recommends a minimum of one foot between speaker and tube type TV. [ DONALD  Jan 16, 2014 ]
Yes if it has the red and white audio ports [ Joseph  Jan 16, 2014 ]
This system was designed in the USA but made in China. Hope this helps. [ George  Jan 16, 2014 ]
Hi,Seems like everything is made over seas. Designed by BA in the USA then produced in China. That's why they can sell them so cheap. Should not be a reason to not purchase. [ DAVID  Jan 16, 2014 ]
I'm not sure, but tell you what ... I'm 100% satisfied with its proformance. [ JOHN  Jan 16, 2014 ]
The Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS Digital Cinema Was Quality Manufactured in Peabody Ma. USA!!!.I Am Very Pleased With My Purchase Of This System And I Think It Is Perfect For A Limited Space Or A Bedroom Flat Screen TV. [ Allen  Jan 15, 2014 ]
According to the back of the sub-woofer: "Made in China. Designed in the USA." [ Vincent  Jan 15, 2014 ]
    China [ TIM F  Jan 15, 2014 ]
    I honestly don't know [ IBAHIM  Jan 15, 2014 ]
Hello Tom, Thank you for your question. This is a great system for folks looking for improved TV sound and Bluetooth streaming for their music. I really have enjoyed mine. I know that the Boston Acoustic Soundware XS is NOT rated specifically for that environment. I have used indoor components outside for short periods of time and in ideal conditions, however I would hesitate to have them exposed to heavy moisture and/or direct exposure to the elements. If you do choose to use the system in that location, I would advise you to install it in such a way to be able to disconnect and bring the components inside in extreme situations. Hope this has helped. Enjoy! [ WESLEY  Jan 13, 2014 ]
It should work fine. Don't know about sub. in ceiling. [ WILLIAM  Jan 12, 2014 ]
You will still have some risk of corrosion of connections over time (yrs) and internal condensation if there is moisture. Just be aware and leave the units accessible to inspection. [ RICHARD  Jan 12, 2014 ]
10 by 30 is kind of big for this setup, it does have great sound but does not get very loud. [ Scott  Jan 12, 2014 ]
The primary problem using an indoor product outdoors is the connectors and speaker covers weren't designed for a potential humidity problem. With moisture come corrosion on the terminals and potential moisture issues on the cones of the speakers. It you are confidant you can control the environment then they would last a long time maintenance free. [ Dan  Jan 12, 2014 ]
No sir. It uses a standard, 110-115 volt ac connector. As used in the USA. If you can get a converter, from 220v to 110v it will work. It is a very nice speaker system. Crutch field may be able to set you up with the proper voltage converter. Good luck sir. [ TODD W  Jan 10, 2014 ]
I am confident that this, being a 110volt electronic device, 220 would cause damage. The crutchfield customer support team has been very helpful to me in the past and may be able to suggest a power converter that will adapt your country's power to be compatible with this and other 110volt devices. I personally own this particular speaker system and am happy with its performance. It sounds a lot larger than it's footprint would suggest and it has good Bluetooth range. [ BRYAN  Jan 10, 2014 ]
Yes, I think so. The plug will need some conversion (for shape) but it does show the 110-240 designation on the power supply. [ JOHN  Jan 10, 2014 ]
Any app that plays media over a smart TV or a Bluetooth enabled tablet or phone will work with the SoundWare XS. [ Gregory  Jan 10, 2014 ]
No, it will work with anything that you can connect with Bluetooth connection. i did have trouble streaming Pandora to the iPad, then to the system. Pandora would freeze after each song. Prerecorded songs on the iPad would stream with no problem, [ Steve  Jan 10, 2014 ]
Anything will work through this system via Bluetooth or your input source. I use Tivo, Apple TV, or a blu ray player, even my ipad using Air Stream, or an iPhone. It's a great system for the price. [ DENNIS  Jan 09, 2014 ]
Yes, if you have your smart tv set up to receive Pandora. You may also access Pandora if you have Directv ,or certain blue ray players [ Michael  Jan 09, 2014 ]
My son has loved this system, since receiving for Christmas, and has it working with iPhone, Xbox, DVD player and tv. The sound is wonderful for the price and he is well pleased. [ CRAIG  Jan 09, 2014 ]
I have this and personally haven't used pandora on it. I have streamed Itunes radio from my ipad and iphone with no problems. Also music that is on my ipad as well. [ GREGORY D  Jan 09, 2014 ]
The system is equipped with Bluetooth and will in fact play other music apps other then Pandora. I have usedit with my music on my iPhone, ipod, and iheartradio. Hope this helps! [ Matt  Jan 09, 2014 ]
well yes it can, the soundware xs.... has an RCA and Digital Optical cables input to which you can connect whatever you want and get excellent sound. what you have to regulate is the output volume of the receiver and the output volume of the soundware you dont create a distortion...the best option I can give you is to connect whatever is you want to connect directly to the boston acoustics soundware xs.... the sound that this unit produces its simple superb. I have connected my laptop via bluetooth, my ps3 via digital optcial cable and still have the RCA input to connect whatever else i want. [ GUILLERMO A  Jan 08, 2014 ]
Yes it can,all you need is RCA cables, just connect from the RCA outputs on your receiver to the RCA inputs on the unit. I currently have an outboard CD changer hooked up now. [ HILARY M  Jan 08, 2014 ]
Yes. All you need is an optical cable. The sound is incredible. You're going to love the system. [ ROBERT  Jan 08, 2014 ]
Yes u can plug in a cd comes w an audio input.but I used mine as Bluetooth for my I phone . I love it a lot [ AURELIO  Jan 08, 2014 ]
Yes. But you will have to unhook another input if you already have to 2 sources like blue-ray and satellite receiver. [ Matthew  Jan 08, 2014 ]
I think this system works with any type of audio device, but the product is designed to add better sound from a tv without having to use a theater amplifier. The unit is pretty slick for the price. If your receiver is Bluetooth that would be a really neat way to set this system up. [ Eric  Jan 08, 2014 ]
I did not hook mine up to a receiver but directly to a DVD player. It comes with an optical audio cable, so if your receiver has an optical audio out, it should work fine. If you don't have optical out, you can use standard RCA audio cords and utilize the AUX IN jacks. Be sure to utilize the surround sound mode in the audio set up instead of stereo mode... It produces a much better sound quality. You can also stream Blue Tooth audio from your phone or other device with apps such as Pandora or ITunes. [ KEVIN  Jan 08, 2014 ]
I have not tried it yet, I would check your receiver to see if it has an RCA output. If so you an use the AUX 1 input on the speaker system. [ EMANUEL  Jan 08, 2014 ]
Yes there are connections for the rca cables. But Jim contact the specialist which are the Crutchfield's team. Hope this helps! [ MARYEVA  Jan 08, 2014 ]
I would think it could be. There are coaxial inputs/outputs on back of bass module. Not only do I use this unit for home theatre sound, but I stream music from my iPod/ipad with Bluetooth. This is the second unit I have purchased for my house and you will not find anything that will come close to producing this big of sound for the money. My father in law has a Bose unit that cost around $1200 and he said be made a big mistake after hearing the Boston Acoustics Soundware XS. [ MITCHELL  Jan 08, 2014 ]
Hi James: I have the speakers being used with a Sony 42 inch TV in a room that is 30x20 with 10ft ceilings and they produce a sharp sound, especially the base. "Top Gun" was great watching as were other action movies while recovering from knee replacement. [ HENRY A  Jan 03, 2014 ]
Personally, if I had a dedicated theater room I would look for a bigger system than this one... [ CHARLES  Jan 02, 2014 ]
My room is large,so not sure how it would do in small rroom.Sub is kind of lame ,speakers are really small, but sound good.i purchased because space over fireplace is limited, also see price has come down.Personally if space is not an issue I would keep looking. [ JOE C  Jan 02, 2014 ]
It's a solid overall system and sound like it would meet you needs since you don't need anything too crazy. [ MARK  Jan 02, 2014 ]
I purchased this system for a 11x13 room which is not a dedicated theater room nor soundproofed and it sounds incredible. I would choose this system vs. a Bose 2.1 system . Simplicity along with sound quality makes this a perfect setup for anyone wanting upgraded sound compared to a sound bar and with taking up little space. This system being on sale makes this a easy decision as I had purchased this to replace my old setup which was with 2 tower speakers and a receiver, I cannot get over how much sound such a compact system can produce. [ JOHNATHON  Jan 02, 2014 ]
If your not looking to blow the roof off, then this is a good unit. Since your room is sound proof it will sound good. [ RICARDO  Jan 02, 2014 ]
The system is quite good and fills a medium sized room very well, especially when used through a music video like our 'Eagles Live In Melbourne' DVD. Very impressive. However, through normal TV programming it doesn't seem as clear and defined, even a little muddy, which may be the TV's fault. [ PAUL R  Jan 02, 2014 ]
Excellent sound. I have it in my bedroom. Which measures 30. Always being told to t urn it, down. Hope this helps. [ MARSHA  Jan 02, 2014 ]
This product would be a good purchase given it's sale price. I use mine for a bedroom TV in a bedroom that's approximately the size you mentioned and was also looking for something simple that would provide better sound than the TV's built-in speakers. The IR receiver is somewhat cheap-looking compared to the Bose Cinemate, but if looks don't matter, and you're looking to save a little cash, this will suit you quite well. [ MICHAEL  Jan 02, 2014 ]
James- We (my wife and I) purchased this set up for a guest bedroom (12'x14') with a 42 inch flat screen. Before setting it up there I hooked it up to our 60" LED in our family room(14'x25' w/normal ceilings and opening into the kitchen....) to see how it would handle the larger room. Have been using it for about a week, watching several action movies, bowl games and regular programming. I gotta say it has been a pleasant surprise. Seems to fill the room with sound w/out straining and several times during the movies and games sounds/crowd effects seemed to originate outside the width of speaker placement. Upper mid (voices) range is particularly clear over that of the television speakers. Very easy to set up and utilize. Cubes able to be placed anywhere with their size and shape. If it can handle the present room it'll be perfect for our second room situation. Sounds like you understand its limitations-don't think you'll be disappointed. Happy New Year! [ WALLACE A  Jan 02, 2014 ]
Very good high's, mid range is a little weak but okay, bottom limited on volume and 'kick' but covers the low range spectrum fairly well. Overall: good quality of sound just not a lot of it. In fairness, I am listening most often to a very large B & W Sub that can scare the dickens out of you if you want it too. :) Hope that helps. Happy New Year. [ LARRY L  Jan 02, 2014 ]
I am pretty satisfied with it. The sound is decent although not always as loud as I want it. My wife thinks it is plenty loud enough, though! The remote sensor is working fine with two other remotes - one for a Samsung TV and the other for the cable box DVR. It is kind of inconvenient to have to use just the BA remote to change the sound back and forth from movie to music, but I do like the difference and maybe will one day figure out how to train my other remotes. I had a defective unit that I sent back when I first got this. Company was quick and no questions asked. Second unit looks and works great. Plenty of cable, good position on connections, easy to place. For the money, I think it was a worthwhile purchase and I am happy with the quality of the sound. [ DAVID  Jan 02, 2014 ]
    No. It's a standalone system. Perfect for a bedroom TV. [ Kevin  Dec 31, 2013 ]
Not sure. I like them as a front pair and subwoofer. Good deal at this price. [ CHARLES D  Dec 27, 2013 ]
The two satelite cubes do have standard speaker wire connections, so as long as you're sending power to them, you should be able to use them as rears. Not sure how the sub woofer would play into that. [ Paul  Dec 27, 2013 ]
You probably could use these as rears but I would want a matched set of speakers in a 5.1 surround setup. [ KARL  Dec 26, 2013 ]
I just recently received this system and easily hooked it up. You could hook it up as rear speakers for your 5.1 and I think you would be amazed at the great sound this small system produces! [ JAMES  Dec 24, 2013 ]
    Don't know -haven't opened it yet. [ KEVIN  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Yes I would think so, the speakers put out excellent sound and you would not be disappointed [ JOHN  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Yes, but not powered by this set up. You'd just have to use them with a 5.1 receiver. This system is designed to run through an amp in the subwoofer itself that drives the sub and the two mini-speakers. It really isn't designed to work with a 5.1 system. Albert [ ALBERT  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Yes you can! But will they be the best match that is up to certain system you will be adding these too. [ NATHANIEL  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Yeah, I dont see why not..the satellite speakers are independent speakers. [ MICHAEL  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Thank you all for answering my question! Getting one! [ John  Dec 17, 2013 ]
Yes, you can connect via digital out, providing it's an optical connection, not coaxial - no coax digital input. Or you can use one of two analog inputs on the unit. Would make an excellent desktop system - use mine with television in a rather large room, and sounds quite good, if not exceptionally loud, due to room size. [ Jon  Dec 17, 2013 ]
You absolutely can! I picked this unit up for my computer exclusively. I have it connected through the analog output and also use it to stream via Bluetooth from my iPad. Great sound quality! [ CARLOS D  Dec 17, 2013 ]
If your computer has toss link output, use the digital input, else, the subwoofer has a set of RCA inputs, and you'll be all set. B/A includes both cables. [ Michael  Dec 17, 2013 ]
Yes, you can connect it to your computer by using the headphone jack from your computer to the 3.5mm jack on the back of the bass unit. (Aux 2 input), just like you would an iPod. [ Peter  Dec 17, 2013 ]
Not sure, but I don't see why bot if you at least have the red and white audio cables. [ Scott  Dec 17, 2013 ]
Yes there is multiple ways to connect. Two aux inputs, and a digital input. The aux input is a stereo audio input and a 3.5 mm miniplug input [ Joseph  Dec 17, 2013 ]
Great and helpful answer. You talked me into it. [ Grismac  Dec 17, 2013 ]
I am very happy with the purchase. There is a problem in getting the system to link up with the Bluetooth ability but when it gets pared it works great. It is much less expensive than the Bose system but I would say it sounds as good. If weight of the speaker system shows some quality these meet that standard. I would recommend this system to my friends. [ EDMUND  Dec 17, 2013 ]
Sorry, but I can't be of much help. It was a Christmas present for my daughter's children and she hasn't installed it yet. And of course I won't have any way to compare it with the other one even when she does. One tidbit I can pass on is that I do like the idea of it not having a wireless connection to the subwoofer or to the other speakers. I have found in my own house that my wireless subwoofer signal tends to interfere with the wif signal carrying the internet connection between my router and my computers and smart phones. Best of luck on it though, Burke [ BURKE  Dec 16, 2013 ]
The Boston Acoustic's sound is very good, especially for the price. I'm not familiar with the Bose system. [ Shelby  Dec 16, 2013 ]
For the price: $540.00 for the Bose Cinemate system how does the sound quality compare to $180.00 for the Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS Digital Cinema? The Bose system cost 3 times the Boston Acoustics system if purchased from Crutchfield. With that in mind you might expect the Bose system to be superior. It is not. The Boston Acoustics system connects to your TV or computer like the Bose system but the Boston Acoustics system features Bluetooth wireless connectivity so you can listen to the music on your iPhone, iPad, or android device. The Bose system does not. The Boston system specifications are listed :System Frequency Response: 39Hz-20kHz, Total System Power 250 Watts. The Bose system specifications for frequency response and power is not listed. The Warrantee for the Bose system is 1 year, the Boston system is 5 years. Oh yes and the sound quality of the Boston system in my opinion is much better than the Bose system. I bought the Boston system for our break room at work. My co-workers were impressed. So far I have purchased 8 Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS Digital Cinema systems for friends at work and for my son and daughter. The score so far is Boston Acoustics 8, Bose 0. I don't own Bose Cinemate system. I have tried to use it to listen music via Bluetooth, but was not impressed with the quality of the sound. [ MICHAEL  Dec 16, 2013 ]
Honestly it's like asking between the quality of a Mercedes and a Honda. That being said, the sound is surprisingly amazing for how compact it is. I use it in my media room and am thoroughly impressed. [ Derek  Dec 16, 2013 ]
I haven't heard the Bose. I assume its in a total different price category. This system is way better than just tv audio. It's perfect for an enclosed room. In my small house with an open foyer, living room, dining room, and kitchen all with vaulted ceilings the bass is not enough. Other than that its pretty impressive for the size. Mids and highs sound clear. Tv dialog is much better. I enjoy iTunes with the blu tooth. [ CURTIS  Dec 16, 2013 ]
I can't comment on this comparison because I haven't had the chance to experience the Cinemate sound. I could say that, for the price, you can't go wrong with the Boston system. It is certainly is a good buy. [ EDWIN  Dec 16, 2013 ]
Not wireless. It is connected to the satellite speakers and the audio source. [ TIMOTHY K  Dec 17, 2013 ]
It is connected to the speakers. [ ANGEL  Dec 15, 2013 ]
Hello Barry . I'm not sure if I'm the one to ask that question. I haven't had time to really play with it. I hooked up to the subwoofer just to hear how it sounds. It sounds great but like i said before. Iv been really busy working. [ JOE  Dec 14, 2013 ]
It's wired. They are connected to the satellite speakers. [ M  Dec 14, 2013 ]
The speakers are wired to the subwoofer. [ GARY E  Dec 14, 2013 ]
The satellites and remote sensor are all wired to terminals on the back of the sub [ ALBERT J  Dec 13, 2013 ]
Sub is NOT wireless. It is the main wiring point for the system. Audio input, remote module & sattelite speaker all get wired to the sub. Along with incoming power. [ Matthew  Dec 13, 2013 ]
Barry, the sub is connected to the satellite speakers, great sounding system. [ WILLIAM E  Dec 13, 2013 ]
    No, it's all wired [ CHRISTOPHER S  Dec 13, 2013 ]
The sub woofer is connected, it has a power cord, optical or RCA connection and the satellite speaker wires. [ DAVID  Dec 13, 2013 ]
Hi Barry It's wired, the sound quality is awesome! [ JOHN  Dec 13, 2013 ]
    It's connected [ CHAD  Dec 13, 2013 ]
It's connected & not wireless but great sound at a very affordable price [ TERENCE C  Dec 13, 2013 ]
The sub woofer is connected to the TV fiber optic output and provides power to each of the two speakers with wires. The sub woofer is the audio processor and amp all in one unit. [ MICHAEL  Dec 13, 2013 ]
The sub is not wireless. It is a powered sub, both small speakers connect to the sub. [ KYLE  Dec 13, 2013 ]
It's not wireless. The speakers hook up to the back of the sub as does the control pod. [ ENRIQUE  Dec 13, 2013 ]
Barry- Though the pic makes it appear that the satellites are wireless, they are not. Boston Acoustics supplies about 15 feet of wire fore each satellite but recommends that they be separated by perhaps 10-12 feet. [ DONALD G  Dec 13, 2013 ]
Yes you can place the system in an adjoining room 30 ft. away but you'll need a very long optical cable or RCA patch cables to hookup to the TV. It may cost a few dollars to find cables the length you need but it's possible. I would suggest you do a little research online to see where. [ DAVID  Dec 15, 2013 ]
They could but you would b have to splice some additional speaker wire. Not sure how it would sound with the sub being that far away. This is not the greatest system in the world. [ CRAIG E  Dec 12, 2013 ]
John, thanks for this clarification. Mike [ Mike  Dec 12, 2013 ]
I believe they can - but the limitations would be 1) Possible loss of direct line of sight to the remote receiving unit 2) the loss of signal over the length of the speaker wire and 3) controlling the volume for the unit from the remote. The input post size for the satellite speakers may limit you to smaller gauge wire than would be efficient for a long stretches and the more wire you run, the more likely you are to get interference. [ JOHN  Dec 11, 2013 ]
The front speakers are wired, if you have enough wire you could locate in another room. [ DON  Dec 11, 2013 ]
I think so. The speakers use standard speaker wires. I'm not sure how long the wires are that ships with the product, but you could provide your own wires of any length. [ SEAN  Dec 11, 2013 ]
You could do that, but why. By doing that, you would loose the effectiveness of the subwoofer. Plus the amp is probably not powerful enough, to move the sound that far. Also the remote will have to be used by the sub. The sensor module as everything else plugs into the sub. The complete system will enhance any tv. In most rooms. And the best thing is that the price has been reduced , even more than when I bought it. Now it is only 179.99 . It is well worth it. Good luck . [ TODD W  Dec 11, 2013 ]
Yes it can with no problem [ JACOB  Dec 09, 2013 ]
Yes, works fine. Just be careful to turn down the volume switch before you go back to TV. [ LEO A  Dec 02, 2013 ]
    Yes [ ADRIAN  Dec 02, 2013 ]
You can connect to this system via Bluetooth. However, you will need to make connections from the control pod to the satellite speakers. You will also need to make physical connections to any source that does not use Bluetooth. [ Jeff  Nov 27, 2013 ]  Staff
