An affordable workhorse

Axxera's AC504BiM CD receiver blends old-school design with new-world technology. Sporting an extra-large 3.7" LCD display, you get the wireless benefits of Bluetooth®, along with touch-less playback controls courtesy of Axxera's Motion Control. Combine this with convenient front USB and aux inputs, CD playback, a sensitive AM/FM tuner, and solid power, and you've got a budget-friendly powerhouse to replace your factory radio.

With a wave of your hand

Motion Control lets you access basic functions without touching the receiver. Simply swipe your hand up and down for volume adjustments, then move it left or right to select your favorite tracks or radio stations. When you place your hand in front of the sensor above the display, Motion Control mutes the AM/FM radio or pauses your CD, USB, or iPod playback. This feature comes in handy when you're concentrating on the road or pulling up to the drive-thru.

Bluetooth and Pandora®

Axxera included built-in Bluetooth for convenient hands-free calling and wireless audio streaming. The AC504BiM also includes a sensitive front-panel microphone for clear conversations.

You don't have to worry which type of phone you have in order to enjoy your Pandora Internet Radio stations. Android® or Blackberry® owners can use the AC504BiM's Bluetooth audio streaming for Pandora control, while iPhone owners will simply plug into the USB input to get your streaming radio fix. You can give a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" and switch between your favorite stations.

Audio options

You can shape your sound with the AC504BiM's three preset EQ settings. The built-in amp delivers a strong 18 watts RMS per channel to get more volume and musical detail out of your speakers, while the two pairs of RCA preamp outputs let you connect an amp or powered subwoofer for a bigger bass impact.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Radio performs better than any radio I have seen from the automobile factory that came as a standard radio. This radio sound coming out is the best I have ever heard. Bluetooth operation is far superior to any standard radio put in by Ford, Chevy, Built, Nissan, Honda. Those are vehicles I have own in the present and past. Radio gets the WOW COOL favor from my teen age grandson. We both enjoy the hands free waving mode allowing us to change stations, raise and lower the volume. If I was guessing this radio would cost HUNDREDS of dollar along with a special order to get it put into a new vehicle purchased from a dealer. Installing the radio was a little tricky, since one the wiring harness was for another model vehicle. After correcting that small problem we install the radio is less than 2 hrs.

Pros: Great looking, sound out put, lots of fun to play with.

Cons: Received one wrong wiring harness but easily corrected.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got radio so I could utilize my smartphone with my truck. Price is good but....If you have any AM station that you like to listen to for sports you are out of luck. The AM is horrible. Having no user manual also ticked me off. Yeah i can spend countless hours going through the menu choices but manual would save lots of time. Bluetooth works great I'll give them that. Wish it would display song titles and let you change the color of the display. If I could have switched it out and bought a different one I would but too lazy.

    Pros: bluetooth

Cons: NO USER MANUAL buttons too small AM Doesn't work no way to dim radio no way to change color

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was the best choice combining value and features. The AC504BiM allowed me to upgrade the audio in my 2000 Mercury Mountaineer to have both Bluetooth and MP3 input.

Pros: Above average audio reproduction improvement over the outdated OEM audio system.

Cons: Lighting needs to be dimmable

I bought this to replace a OEM in my work truck. It installed great, the control are easy enough to use, the ability to change the volume or to change the song just by waving my hand past the front of the radio is really a sweet trick.....My iphone 6 works great when it's unconnected to it....... And that's the problem. The online instructions say that trying to use the USB " might " cause interference with the controls.....might isn't the word I'd use......schizophrenic, more likely. When the USB is in use, the radio will erratically turn up or down the volume, stop and pause, and waving your hand in front of it doesn't work at all.......huge disappointment. I bought it so I wouldn't have to get a USB outlet and use up a 12v port, but that's not gonna happen now. The 2.5 mm cable works out well, but I didn't buy it for that. The only other problem is that the lights on it won't dim. Not a big deal during the day......haven't used the CD player, probably won't.......bought it for the hands free. Overall a good deal, just be aware of what it doesn't do. What it does, it does well.

Pros: Big display, great hands-free controls.

Cons: Sketchy performance when USB is in use.

It sounds good on the speakers I purchased with the system, but I think other speakers may make it sound better. The audio settings could offer more and the motion control could be more responsive. I have only had it about a week and it could be the learning curve.

Pros: Good sound quality for phone calls over bluetooth. Easily pairs to iPhone.

Great economical stereo with all the features I need

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I simply wanted bluetooth so I could go hands free with calls and I could stream my music. It was very easy to install (thanks to Crutchfield's great instructions and support, of course) and the sound is absolutely awesome. Better than the original and my original was a Bose. So, that's saying something. One of the best upgrades I could ever give my car.

Pros: Easy to install and easy to understand. Didn't really need a manual to get started. Programmed my favorite channels and started streaming my music. First call that came in while driving went very smoothly. Sound quality for me and the other party was great. Couldn't have asked for more.

Cons: Not much to complain about. One day, it would be nice if it displayed at least the titles of the songs my phone is streaming, but I realize that's got to integrate quite a bit and know a lot about what app I use to stream. So, barring that, perhaps displaying the date/time while streaming music or not displaying anything might be better than all caps AV STREAMING.

The kit came with everything I needed to install. Spent some time soldering up the leads. Mounted in bracket from there it only took 20 min's to mount in my truck. Sounds nice and the Bluetooth is handy. I like the USB for my iPhone and iTouch better then the Bluetooth. All round good deal for the money.

Pros: Loaded with feathers. Bluetooth, USB, AUX, plenty of presets and modes. Good sound for my old truck.

Cons: The motion control is nothing to get excited about. I turned it back off. Worked with I didn't want it to and didn't work when I wanted it to. Very bright at night. Not sure what's going on but I have lost all my presets and had to reset my clock twice in as many weeks now. Will need to look into that. Unless it just fries on me I'll keep it anyway.

    Poor customer service

    Rick from Bristol,ct on 1/9/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had this unit installed on Christmas eve. I attempted to set up features to make it perform the way I wanted it to. It only comes with a start up manual that does not explain how to get into different menues. I attempted the trial and error approach which caused the unit to lock up 3 times. Have to hit the reset button and all pre-sets are gone. Called Duel/Axxera customer service and was told there is NO operation manual available for this unit. I was livid. Who sells a product without an oiperation manual? If it wasn't for Ed at Crutchfield who had me try some procedures, I would have taken this thing out and sent it back already. I'm happy with the product itself but not the manufacturer.

Pros: The hand motion feature is cool(it has to be activated for it to work).Bluetooth works great. And having USB/Aux.ports on the front is very convienient. Has plenty of power.

Cons: AM reception isn't so good. Not having an in depth manual to show you how to turn features on and off to customize it to your needs.

    Decent sound, but terrible interface

Dylan S from California on 1/8/2015

    2007 Volkswagen GTI
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality is great, bluetooth and USB controls work perfectly... but (and this is a HUGE but), the interface is atrocious. The LED display gaudy is cluttered with icons at all times, and the buttons (and labeling) are tiny and non-intuitive. This wouldn't be a big issue on a home stereo, where you can take a few seconds to stare and figure things out, but in a moving vehicle? Absolutely not. If it takes you more than a 1 second glance to tell what's going on, it's poorly designed. The stereo plays music well, and has lots of features, but so do most. Go with one you can use while driving.

Pros: Music plays well Bluetooth and USB interface works seemlessly

Cons: Interface is cluttered and un-useable while driving.

If your looking for great sound and easy to use and set up then this unit is hard to do. bluetooth features worked perfectly on my galaxy note2. I was surprised at how well the built-in mic works. Streaming audio sounds great.

    Pros: Ease of use

Cons: Could not find a dimming function for night driving. Very bright

    So far its GREAT!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The only reason ease of use is 3 star is because I have not yet played with the unit. Everything I have tried to use so far has worked flawlessly. Easy install once I labeled and organized everything. love the idea of having bluetooth, cd, aux and usb in 1 unit. Going from a stock miata head unit with only cd to this is awesome!

Pros: Best bang for buck, build and sound quality all around is very good

Cons: no dimming function thought it would be okay and keep me awake on late night drives but on the road it almost blinds you

Straightforward install. Told if I install this radio that by subwoofer under the seat of my 2004 Forester would not work. But it worked without any modification which was great.

    Pros: All around nice unit.

Cons: No dimming function. Be careful, the faceplate brightness could signal planes. Also, AM sensitivity kinda sucks if you use AM a lot. All other functions OK>

    Motion + Remote Control

Motion Control: The Motion Control technology allows you to control the most often used functions with simple hand gestures; play/pause, tune, track and volume up/down. Motion Control can be used for Tuner, CD, USB, and iPod/iPhone. The Motion Control sensor is located on the front-panel of the head-unit next to the USB port (if the sensor is blocked, then it will not function).

    • Swipe your hand up across the sensor to increase the volume or swipe your hand down across the sensor to decrease the volume.
    • Swipe your hand right across the sensor to skip to the next track or station. Swipe your hand left across the sensor to return to the beginning of the previous track.
    • Put your hand over the sensor to mute audio from the AM/FM Tuner or to pause/play a music track from CD/USB/iPod.
Note: The motion control feature may not work properly with a large USB flash drive or a USB cable inserted. A low-profile USB flash drive is recommended.

Wireless Remote Control: The AC504BiM comes supplied with an 21-button IR wireless remote control which provides complete control of the Axxera CD Receiver.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Axxera AC504BiM is equipped with built-in Bluetooth allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Axxera AC504BiM.

Pairing: Before using your Bluetooth enabled device, it must be paired to the AC504BiM. You can only pair one device at a time with this unit. Once paired, when your Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the Axxera receiver, the auto connection function automatically connects the two units. The Axxera AC504BiM is compatible with most Bluetooth enabled mobile phones, including the Apple iPhone, Blackberry, and Android smartphones.

Hands-Free Communication w/ Integrated Mic: The Axxera AC504BiM allows for wireless communication between the head unit and your Bluetooth enabled smartphone. To dial a number, you will still need to use your mobile phone and then transfer the call to the head unit. Use the integrated front-panel microphone to speak into during your phone conversation, while the other party will be heard through your vehicle's speakers. Your car audio speakers will mute automatically during a call.

Bluetooth Audio (A2DP/AVRCP): The Axxera AC504BiM also allows you to play back stored music and streamed music apps from your Bluetooth enabled smartphone, tablet, or personal music player using a Bluetooth connection. This USB 1-Wire for iPod/iPhone connection provides audio playback (for both stored music & music apps), metadata display, control, and charging of select iPod/iPhones through the Axxera CD receiver.

    • Bypass iPod DAC: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 1-bit D/A converter (bypassing iPod/iPhone DAC).

    Audio & Tuner Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Axxera AC504BiM is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the AC504BiM are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 60 watts x 4 channels (240 watts total)
Note: The power specifications for the AC504BiM are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

4V/4Ch RCA Outputs: The AC504BiM is equipped with two pair of 4V RCA outputs (Front, Rear/SW). You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting a pair of full-range rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading.

Subwoofer Control: When the subwoofer preamp output is active, you can adjust the output level (0-12) of the sub preamp output. You can also set the low-pass crossover to 80, 120, 160Hz, or Through (full-range).

3-Band EQ + Loudness: The Axxera CD Receiver features the following preset EQ curves (Flat, Pop, Jazz, Classic, Beat, Rock, or User) to customize your music listening. The User mode activates a 3-Band EQ which lets you adjust Bass, Midrange, & Treble manually. EQ settings are stored for each source. The Loudness function enhances the bass & treble frequencies at low volumes.

Source & Program Volume The Source Volume Level control allows a gain adjustment for each audio source (Tuner, CD, Aux, Bluetooth, USB, iPod). You can set the source volume level (+/-6dB) for each mode, depending on the relative volume of each audio source. You can also set the AC504BiM to power-on to the same volume level (0-30) every time.

Key Beep: When this function is enabled, every button press will output a beep tone.

AM/FM Tuner: The Axxera AC504BiM features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. You can store up to 18 FM station presets and 12 AM station presets (manually or automatically).

    Display  Features

Detachable Face Security: The Axxera AC504BiM features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. There is no protective face case included. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. Face-fixing screws are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Single-Line Display: The Axxera head unit features a single-line bluish white backlit LCD with blue button illumination.

Text Scroll: You can change the scrolling style used for displayed information on the LCD screen. Choose from Off (no scrolling), Once (scrolls once), 15 Secs (scrolls once per 15 seconds), and On (constantly scrolls).

12/24 Hour Clock: The unit's built-in clock can be set to 12-hour or 24-hour mode.

Power-On Message + Demo: This feature allows a "Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening" text message to be shown on the unit's LCD screen when it is powered on. You can enable or disable the unit's demonstration mode.

Don't know. Bought and installed this on someone else's car[ Robert  Aug 08, 2015 ]
No it won't. Well unless I haven't found how to display it. They do not provide a users manual with the radio and the website from crutchfield or the manufacturer don't have the users manual either. (very odd!) All they provided was a quick startup reference sheet.[ SCOTT  Aug 04, 2015 ]
No At least not on Bluetooth on my iPhone 6 Plus[ Greg  Aug 04, 2015 ]
Kind Of. It doesn't scroll, so you can choose artist or title. But if it's too long, you can't see it that well anyway. But I recommend this unit. Bluetooth worked great for audio streaming. Phone calls, maybe if you have a quiet car, but mine was too loud(engine and header) for it to work.[ Joel  Aug 04, 2015 ]
If you plug your phone into the USB port it does, you have to click "display" to change what you want to see (song name/artist/album name/track number). If you use the Bluetooth it does NOT show the name of anything. It just says "your phone's name" (i.e. Mine says "Casey's iPhone").[ Casey M.  Aug 04, 2015 ]
My only problem has been the motion option. In the dark, shadows would change the track and volume. I have only used my phone through Bluetooth.[ Tyler  Jan 02, 2015 ]
Do you mean static while using the Bluetooth? I have not had any problems with mine - I have an iPhone 4S and my son has a Galaxy 3 and neither of us have problems. Have you called Axxera's customer service? The first thing I would check is the connections in your harness if you had to join two together.[ Timothy  Dec 29, 2014 ]
This was a Christmas gift and hasn't been installed yet. Sorry I'm not able to help.[ Julie  Dec 29, 2014 ]
We have had no issues with this unit. Just installed a few days ago.[ BRIAN  Dec 29, 2014 ]
We have had this unit installed for a few days now and have not experienced this problem.[ Rusty  Dec 29, 2014 ]
I haven't experienced this when using bluetooth, but I have noticed some white noise when the phone is physically plugged into the unit. My fix is that I don't plug the phone in.[ JEFFREY  Dec 30, 2014 ]
I use the Bluetooth on mine and have no problems.[ Richard C.  Dec 29, 2014 ]
Yes, I am experiencing the same thing and I have not yet found a resolution. It is annoying and I would return the item but I have gone beyond 30 days. If you find a resolution please let me know.[ Home Revival  Dec 29, 2014 ]
I've noticed alternator noise when in audio-in mode and powered by car DC. You could power the device using batteries. There are also other ways to limit alternator noise.[ DAVID  Dec 29, 2014 ]
Hi, I don't know what a factory sub woofer is, but I wrote in exactly the make and model of my car, and everything I needed came from Crutchfield. I would suggest getting the wiring caps as opposed to soldering, although that was interesting to learn. With a little help from a youtube video, I was able to install my own car stereo. Everything I needed came from Crutchfield.[ Suzanne  Oct 10, 2014 ]
