Our take on the Axxera AVN6446BT

Then there's the Axxera AVN6446BT navigation receiver, which offers reliable guidance, a DVD player, built-in Bluetooth® connectivity for hands-free calling and music streaming, and a whole lot more. All without crushing your checkbook, so you can check out this in-dash pilot with confidence.

You won't just get directions with this Axxera receiver

Sometimes all you need is to make sure you're not going to get lost when you head to unfamiliar areas. Most entry-level in-dash GPS receivers can help you get there, but they don't provide much more bang for your buck.

See everything on an easy-to-follow 6.2" display

The AVN6446BT gives you command over your media through its 6.2" touchscreen. You can view maps of the entire U.S., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and enjoy having over 10 million points of interest at your disposal when looking for a place to stop. You can choose from five different color themes and Axxera offers a selection of wallpapers to help customize your travels.

Excellent guidance by iGO primo

iGO primo navigation software ensures you're getting the most reliable routes — including actual street names announced at turns — while lane guidance keeps you on the right path for your next maneuver. In some instances you'll see realistic depictions of complicated intesections or 3D representations of buildings and landmarks to help orient yourself. This stereo's compatible with Naviextras, which allows you to download maps for other countries, including points of interest.

Built-in Bluetooth lets you talk hands-free

Need to make or take a phone call and don't have time to stop? Pair the AVN6446BT with your compatible phone, and you can converse while you drive and keep your hands on the wheel. Axxera includes an external microphone so your callers won't have to struggle to hear your voice over road noise and wind. This receiver gives you full access to your phonebook, so you can keep your phone safely stowed away.

Stream your music and control your Pandora app

If you've got a lot of music stored on your Android™ phone, iPhone®, or BlackBerry® device, the Axxera's A2DP technology makes it easy to stream your tunes without wires. iPhone users can command their Pandora Internet radio app through the AVN6446BT's screen with a wired hookup, while Android fans get finger-friendly control via a wireless Bluetooth connection.

Plays well with all kinds of media

The AVN6446BT will play all your CDs and DVDs, including discs loaded with music files, while front and rear A/V inputs offer connections for more audio/video sources. Go ahead and load up your iPod® or thumb drive with tunes for your road trips — the receiver's front USB port provides convenient access, not to mention plenty of charging power for your devices.

When you're parked, you can enjoy movies from DVDs or other video sources on the receiver's display. Want to get your passengers involved? They can use the included wireless remote control to pick the playlist.

10-band EQ, backup cam input, and more

No matter your audio source, the receiver's 10-band equalizer lets you tweak the settings to suit your listening preferences. You can also connect a rear-view camera, so you can see more of what's behind your vehicle when getting in and out of tight spots. If you're looking to add subs and amps, you can take advantage of 6-volt front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs.

Add satellite radio

Satellite radio's a wonderful way to keep track of sports, weather, news, talk, and commercial-free music as you travel, and you can access all that wonderful programming by adding a SiriusXM tuner (not included) to this stereo. Your favorite stations are always there and, even better, you can view the channel art on the big screen.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

This is a great radio gps for the money compared to other brands. I bought everything to install in my 2014 Nissan Maxima . The install was easy and I also added a Ken wood 4 channel amp. It sounds awesome with lots of bass!

Pros: Easy install with everything I needed from Crutchfield.

Cons: I lost voice commands when I took out the factory radio!

Very disappointed by this unit. Poor sound quality and touch screen response. Good price point, but you get what you pay for... I ended up replacing with an established brand that works exponentially better!!

    Pros: Price. Navigation works well.

Cons: Poor touch response; weak sound; no EQ settings; no manual included; system updates done via micro SD card.

    Limited features especially with Android

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this partially due to the high ratings. I am giving this 2 stars and I think that is being generous. On the plus side, the GPS feature works reasonably well, and the unit sounds ok. There are no EQ presets, which blows my mind. You have one setting at a time, which you can change, but I find that to be a big minus considering the wide range of audio quality MP3's I listen to. Now bear in mind, I'm using this with an Android phone (Samsung S8), not an Iphone, so the following is based on Android functionality, or lack therof. It does not display detail MP3 info via phone bluetooth, only song title. It does not display artist, nor does it sync / list your MP3 library. It also does not sync / display your phonebook either. Really ? The touch screen was a little balky - watch the video for this unit and you'll see what I mean. I see a few GPS units on Crutchfield for less which can't be less feature laden than this unit especially with Android. I returned this unit and replaced it with a Pioneer AVIC-5200NEX which, although it cost more even after a rebate, is 100% more satisfactory in all categories. You get what you pay for - sometimes, in the case of my purchase of the Axxera, you get less.

Pros: GPS ok, Radio ok, easy installation

Cons: No preset EQ bands, nor can you save multiple custom EQ settings. With Android, does not sync phone book or display MP3 detail information or MP3 library when playing via phone bluetooth.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great system. The installation was very straightforward in a 2009 Subaru Impreza. The setup of the navigation was extremely easy as the mounting of the GPS antenna on the system itself under the dash is working fine. The mounting brackets did allow for a couple different hole combinations, so I had to fit it a couple times to make sure it was the right set. I mounted the microphone on the steering column with no problems. The system works great, the navigation can be programmed with many different settings. The touch screen is responsive and has caused me no issues. The Pandora control works very well. The DVD player and Bluetooth work well too. The only thing I did not like was that the screen cycled on startup and I could not figure out why. The reason is that there is a "Demo" mode, which is a screen saver type thing. You just have to shut off that setting, as it is the default. Maybe everyone knows this, but I didn't and it was frustrating to figure out.

Pros: Navigation is heavily customizable Pandora control is great Bluetooth works well

    Cons: Demo mode as default

I'm very, very, satisfied with this unit. Every single feature, GPS, bluetooth, backup camera, sound quality, you name it, works great. It's awesome to get so many features at this price point. Also, I bought this unit assuming we'd never use it's hand free calling feature as I've never encountered an automobile hands free calling that didn't sound aweful. But, it comes with a free microphone included so I hooked it up anyway. The hands free calling works awesome! I was so pleasantly surprised. My wife can be driving along talking to me hands free, she can here me fantastic through the car's speakers, and she sounds fantastic at my end as well. It sounds practically the same as if she had her cell phone to her ear and was speaking to me directly through it. The only difference is that her volume level at my end is just is a tad bit quieter. It's not a big deal at all, just slightly quieter than normal. Due to the car having a telescoping steering wheel I wasn't able to mount the microphone directly behind it. I had to mount it below and to the right of the steering wheel. So, I wouldn't be surprised if there's no drop in volume at all if your able to mount the microphone directly behind the steering wheel.

For the price you cant beat it. Backup Camera wires are not long enough for a f250 crew cab truck. So will not get a chance to used that, Bluetooth is good, dvd player setup didn't have instructions to hookup called crutchfield they sent me photos were you have to wire it to. Never did that really no need to, gps is okay, dont hook up the dimmer, sound is great, pandora works great off your Bluetooth and its not a bad buy.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This a great product at a great price point. After reviewing the different DVD\Navigation systems available, I decided on the Axxera for its rich number of features, its well thought out design, and large touch-screen. I decided to have the system professionally installed and it came out wonderfully. I would suggest to update the map software as soon as possible. I had an issue with the voice prompts not functioning, but after the update, it was right as rain. I would definitely recommend this unit to anyone looking to upgrade their OEM audio system. Well worth the price.

Pros: Great price, bright display, good sound, lots of features

    Touchscreen & Remote Control

6.2" Touchscreen Display: The Axxera AVN6446BT features a fixed 6.2" widescreen touchscreen LCD monitor. The screen has a resolution of 800 x RGB (3) x 480 with 1,152,000 total pixels. This unit has touchscreen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy. The Axxera AVN6446BT offers a variety of display adjustments to customize the display.

    • UI Colors: You can adjust the colors of the on-screen menu's touchscreen buttons from Green, Red, Amber, Blue, or Olive.
    • Background Wallpaper: You can choose from five different background wallpaper designs.
    • Brightness: The unit's LCD backlight can be adjusted to Night, Dark, Normal, or Bright.
    • Picture Adjustment: When watching a video, you can adjust the touchscreen display's brightness, contrast, saturation, and hue (from 1-20).
Note: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in monitor as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the head unit's pink wire must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged.

Start-Up Time: The Axxera AVN6446BT will turn on to the last source selected. The unit has start-up time of approximately 16.7 seconds from Off to the last Source selected. It then takes another 5.3 seconds to access the navigation screen.

Clock & Date Display: The navigation receiver offers a 12- or 24-hour clock display which is visible from any source or menu screen. The clock & date are both visible on the main menu screen only.

Hard-Key Controls w/ Variable Button Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons and a rotary-dial along the left edge of the screen. You can adjust the head unit's button illumination from the following preset colors - Blue, Purple, Sky Blue, Aqua Blue, Yellow, Green, Red, White or Demo (scans through all preset colors). You can also select a custom "Custom" color that is adjusted between Red, Green, and Blue (values range: 0-255).

Remote Control: The Axxera head unit comes with an IR remote and supports many vehicle's steering wheel controls (adapter required).

    • IR Remote Control: The head unit comes supplied with a 44-button IR remote control which provides wireless operation of the Axxera navigation receiver; including Bluetooth hands-free and audio streaming functions.
    • Optional Steering Wheel Control Interface: The unit features a SWC (steering wheel control) input and is compatible with the Metra ASWC-1 SWC interface (120ASWC1, sold separately), so you can keep your vehicle's factory steering wheel radio controls.

    Onboard Navigation

iGO Primo Next Gen & TomTom Navigation: The Axxera AVN6446BT contains map coverage of the United States (all 50 states) and Puerto Rico with over 10,000,000 points-of-interests from TomTom; all stored on a pre-installed 4GB microSDHC memory card (the microSDHC map card must remained installed in order for navigation system to function). The map database was created using high-resolution aerial and land based data collection. The AVN6446BT employs iGO Primo Next Gen navigation software for turn-by-turn visual and voice assistance to your selected destination. The software quickly calculates step-by-step directions to any destination available on the included on-screen navigation map.

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While the database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

Map Updates: iGO offers periodic updates for data such as roads, new addresses, and other navigational information that will keep the Axxera navigation system up to date and provide the best possible experience. For updates and add-on options, please visit www.naviextras.com (requires Windows XP or newer; not compatible with Mac). A free program called "Toolbox" can be downloaded from this website so you can create a copy of your map as a backup, as well as assist in easily checking for updates and optional features that are available.

Note: You have 30 days from purchase to download the latest available map free of charge.

GPS Receiver & Antenna: The Axxera AVN6446BT features a built-in SiRFprima GPS receiver and includes an external GPS antenna which determines vehicle speed and heading changes, along with longitude and latitude information, to accurately determine vehicle heading and position on the system's digital map. The GPS antenna can be mounted inside or outside of the vehicle. The GPS antenna measures 1.5625" (w) x 0.625" (h) x 1.9375" (d); with a 10' cable.

Note: The navigation receiver took approximately 17.5 seconds to calculate directions from Charlottesville, Virginia to LA, California. It only took 12.5 seconds to calculate directions from Charlottesville, Virginia to Baltimore, Maryland. These tests were done inside the Crutchfield Lab of the Crutchfield Head Quarters. Results will vary based on length of calculated route and your surrounding area.

On-Screen Map: The unit's on-screen map shows your vehicle's current position (a blue arrow by default), the recommended route (an orange line), the surrounding map area, and your destination as a checkered flag. The on-screen map shows streets, roads, and highways in a way that is similar to how a paper road map show them. A road's width and colors corresponds to their importance, so you can easily tell a freeway from a small street. When navigating a route, the top section of the map screen shows information about your next route maneuver and the next street or the next city/town. When approaching a turn, the map screen will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the next turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you. The map also displays data; such as the posted speed limit, your current speed, current time, distance to your destination, time left before you reach your destination, and your arrival time.

    • 2D/3D Map View: Switch between the 3D perspective, 2D Heading Up, and 2D North Up map view modes. In Heading Up mode the map is rotated so its top always points in the current driving direction. This is the default orientation in 3D map view mode. IN North up mode, the map face North.
    • Color Mode: The navigation map screen uses different color themes (Day/Night) during the day and during the night for both the map and the menu screen. Daytime colors are similar to paper road maps, and the menus are bright. The nigh color themes use dark colors for large objects to keep the average brightness of the screen low. Destination Search Description
Browse Map Select a point on the map for your destination by touching the screen.
Address Enter a full address or a part of an address; for example a street name without a house number or the names of two intersecting streets. Or enter ZIP code only; this way you do not need to select the name of the city and the search for street names might be faster as well.
POIs Search over 11 million POIs (points-of interest) by name, near you current location, along route, near your destination, or around a city.
Favorites You can save your favorite addresses (like home & work) and POIs for quicker access the next time you are traveling.
History The places that you have set as destinations in the past are automatically stored for easier access. Smart History suggests these previously used locations as destinations based on your navigation habits, using parameters like the current time of day, the day of week, and the current location.
Combined Search You can do a combined search of Addresses, POIs, Saved locations, and recent destinations.
Coordinates Allows you to search your destination by longitude and latitude values.
Where Am I? this screen contains information about the current position (or approximately the last known position if GPS reception is not available) and a button to search for Car Repair, Health Agencies, Police, and Gas Stations around your area.

    Never tried it, but I don't think so [ Antonio  Jun 29, 2017 ]
For calling I have used voice command but I think that was because my phone is able to take voice command or hands free calling and has nothing to do with the unit other then it connects through bluetooth As far as text to voice and voice to text I haven't tried that and have no desire to try that. I think it would work though if your phone is capable and the unit once again in itself only connects the bluetooth to your speaker system I say if you have to text pull over [ Myron  Jun 27, 2017 ]
You have to use the voice recognition from your phone to text and make calls. Your vice will go through the microphone to your phone to make calls. To have the contact information to appear you have to upload your contacts to the device phonebook if you dont it will only show the phone number. The neat part is the ability to play music from your phone. [ kreig  Jun 27, 2017 ]

My daughter has an iPhone 7+ and this works perfectly with it. I was there when she synced it and there were no issues. She has had it now for several months and loves it. Hands free talking is sounds awesome. She uses it all the time. [ Brad  Dec 15, 2016 ]

If you wire it up properly, easy, a nice feature that I don't think is even documented is that when you put the car in reverse if the receiver is turned off or if it is on but not done booting yet (booting takes about 30 seconds) it will automatically power on the receiver if needed and immediately, automatically, go into a display the backup camera mode (it doesn't need to be fully booted for this mode). If the receiver was off prior to using the backup camera it will switch back off as soon as you take the car out of reverse. [ Thomas  May 26, 2017 ]
You absolutely can! I just purchased this unit a few weeks ago and just installed it. Crutchfield was very helpful allowing me to connect my backup camera to the unit. The backup camera I got required me to connect my camera to my backup lights to power the camera. I also had to connect one of the wires to my backup lights. Crutchfield send me a photo showing me exactly where it was so tapping into this line was no problem. I hope this helps - Larado [ Larado  Nov 23, 2016 ]
I ordered the extra parts the site tells you that you need and I didn't have to get any others. Unit works fantastic. [ Brad  Nov 04, 2016 ]
I have a S5 I can do anything that the specs for the AVN6446 state. I stream audio from both phone and netbook. The BT works the hands off phone operations very well. The 6446 is the best unit I have seen, including the auto stock systems. NAV is superb. [ Dennis  Oct 30, 2016 ]
