Our take on the Axxera AXV820

Put video entertainment and Bluetooth® functionality into your dash with Axxera's AVX820 DVD receiver. This double-DIN car stereo features a bright and clean 6.2" touchscreen, with large icons and a layout that puts control at your fingertips.

Free your hands and cut the wires

Put video entertainment and Bluetooth® functionality into your dash with Axxera's AVX820 DVD receiver. This double-DIN car stereo features a bright and clean 6.2" touchscreen, with large icons and a layout that puts control at your fingertips.

Built-in Bluetooth® functionality lets you take calls coming into your compatible cell phone without taking your hands of the wheel. The built-in microphone picks up your end of the conversation, while you hear your caller loud and clear. You can also stream music from your phone or other Bluetooth devices straight through your car's speakers.

Movies for those long road trips

If you've got hours on the road and restless passengers in your future, you can connect this receiver to an overhead or headrest monitor so your back seat passengers can enjoy a movie while you drive. This Axxera also plays compressed video files, so you can load multiple movies onto a USB device, SD card, or recordable DVD, instead of having to tote a library of discs with you. Axxera's included an iPod® video cable too, so you can tap into video content from your Apple device as well.

Plenty of options and connections

Prefer to listen to some tunes during your drive time? No problem — you can slip in an SD™ card or hook up a USB device loaded with MP3 or WMA files. And you can archive hours of music on a recordable DVD or CD disc for your journey. The handy front-panel A/V input provides a pathway for other audio and video sources.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Axxera stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Solid for the money. Could not ask for more from a sub $300. I love the Bluetooth options. I can play music from my IPad, phone or any other Bluetooth device without wires. Screen brightness is adjustable. Takes a while to learn how to navigate around.

Pros: Great value. Bluetooth works flawless.

Cons: Hard to navigate sometimes. Does not show music titles or info when playing.

Cons: no phonebook, no choice of colors for display, still not clear on how to use DVD with stick shift car, still waiting on word from Axxera

For the money I spent, can't beat it. lots of extras. great sound . I hooked up a set of Lanzar 180 watt triaxial speakers in the doors. It will blow your hair back

Pros: Lots of bang for your buck.

Cons: Still trying to get dvd's to play. Going to try bypass.

Decent Deck but No Owners Manual!

Newbie from Phoenix, AZ on 11/15/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

1st off, I am satisfied with the cost vs features, my goal was to updgrade the factory Radio/CD & this is a definate upgrade! Much better sound quality even with the same factory speakers & sub. I wish I would have spent a little more $ to upgrade to the JVC Note: I bought the "Scratch/Dent model which was missing a cable. With 1 call Crutchfield sent it right out BUT it did delay my install. I also bought the extra wiring harness for the steering wheel controls/factory sub. As others have stated the instructions are confusing BUT the Crutchfield Techs cleared things up.

Pros: Improved sound, 2 USB ports (I have the rear port cable running to my glove box), remote control for the kids, crossover controls for High/Mid/Low (Great w/factory sub), addl video out & video in (Hope to add rear camera), BT feature for music/cell phone

Cons: NO Owners Manual! Only a short installation guide that refers you to a website to print owners manual BUT website is down! I called Axxera Support who offered to email me a copy... never got it. EZ enough to operate BUT would have saved time w/manual No radio display for song info (I knew it wasnt included BUT didnt think Id miss it) The display is a little "plain" compared to other models. My explorer deck sits up high where EVERYBODY can see what radio station, CD, or iPod song Im rockin!

Great Value, most of all great buying experience and tech support

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the best buying experience I have ever had. Crutchfield Tech support is second to none. You may be able to buy same unit from eBay for a little less, but you wouldn't have gotten any of this superior sale and tech support like Crutchfield. I am installing this unit in my 2000 Landcrusier, because the mismatch between the unit and factory amp, there was a low hiss from the speakers. No time wasted Crutchfield sent me the RCA isolator right away. When this failed to work, they send me a replacement unit with a different type harness the next day. I was on phone with tech staff dozen times. They were very knowledgeable and professional. The unit is good value, function well. I like internal mic, so I didn't have to run extra wire for the external mic. it doesn't come with auto dimming, but with the remote, you can just hit the button to adjust brightness and contrast. Bluetooth seems working fine so far, but will be better is it can auto answer incoming call. It also doesn't sync phone book with your smart phone.

Pros: low price, internal mic, various cables included, quality

Cons: no phonebook sync, no dimming function

    Good Value

    2006 Ford F-150
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This headunit is great for the money, however I found a few technical issues; 1. The Bluetooth feature does not always function correctly, sometimes it will not connect and is very difficult to get it to reconnect. 2. The touchscreen is not very user friendly or responsive when scrolling through your play list on your iPod/iPhone; otherwise the unit is a great value and has all the necessary features for expansion, (I personally hooked up an HDTV Tuner, which is an awesome alternative to DVD's.) If you're a media junky like myself, you'll appreciate IPod/iPhone feature, I gotta have my music videos! I also hooked up an infrared backup camera.

Pros: Great value; the sound quality is very good when playing DVD's and it also allows you to stream music from your smartphone.

Cons: The unit can have a mind of it's own at times.

A lot of bang for your buck

I bought this to replace a stolen Clarion and let me tell you it sounds better than the old one and has more features than others that cost alot more. I have only owned alpine and clarion in the past so I was a little worried about this unit, but it sounds and works GREAT!

Pros: Great price, great sound, and lots of features.

Cons: no owners manual just a quick start guide. tryed to download the manual off the net but the file was missing.

    Nice unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased two of these units, comparing it with other brands and the features it was a pretty easy sell for the price, so far it has been amazing, sounds great and the thing I like the most is the bluetooth connectivity as soon as I turn on the car it connects and I'm able to stream music and make calls and the people on the other end of my calls cannot believe how clear I sound using it.

Pros: Great Value, good features, great sound and has the ablity to connect so much I pod, camera extra monitors.

Cons: Wish it could have ablity to change the display color

    Not Bad...

Erik from Westchester, NY on 9/11/2012

    Not bad for the money

Pros: 1. Decent sound quality 2. Easy to navigate menu's

Cons: 1. The screen is not good in highly lit areas (sunlight, etc) - so you cant see the screen very well, sometimes at all. 2. Bluetooth is limited in functionality - no phonebook 3. The clock does not display when the system is off (as the old system did).

    Seems Goog to Me

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the only video unit I have ever had. However, it seems nice to me, with a large clear screen. Plenty of wiring options and auxiliary ports. Feels and looks sleek and solid. The overall features vs cost make this a good bet, assuming it holds up over time

Pros: Economical, large bright screen, loaded with features, looks and feels nice in my dash.

Cons: The parking brake safety algorithm is to sensitive. I put a usb stick with 6 gig of music and because some of them were .wav files; the system refused to play anything on the stick unless i pulsed the e-brake. Hey Axxera if you read this; how about putting in some logic like: file type combined with file size? Of perhaps in my case at least let me access the mp3s that are on the same media as the wav files?

    Money well spent!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered this on 8/24 and received it in 8/28. Fast and prompt shipping. Installed the receiver in a 2001 Toyota sequoia SUV, took only an hour. Install was a breeze, thanks to crutch field - excellent documentation and phone support. I called tech support to validate wiring. Phone was answered in 3 rings, no voice prompts, a technician was on the phone right away and walked me through the wiring connections.

Pros: Menu and display very intuitive. DVD playback quality is. Dry good. blue tooth streaming, 2 video outputs to connect to dual monitors. iPod cable charges my iPhone, no extra charger required!!

Cons: Blue tooth mic sensitivity is very low. You have to talk almost in front of the mic. My buddy at the other end could make out what I was saying, but his feedback was that I sounded like I was on a speaker phone.

Bluetooth operates in 2.4 GHz frequency range and transmits voice and data at speeds up to 1 megabit-per-second.

Pairing: Before using the unit's Bluetooth functions, you must pair your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or audio device to the AXV820. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some mobile devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the AXV820

Hands Free Profile (HFP): The Axxera AXV820 allows for wireless communication between the head unit and your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone. You can answer an incoming call from the head unit's touchscreen. Incoming phone call information will be displayed on the AXV820's integrated monitor. You can enter a phone number using the touchscreen keypad or transfer a call from your phone. Your car audio speakers will mute automatically during a call.

External Microphone: The AXV820 includes an external microphone to speak into during your phone conversation, while the other party is heard through your vehicle's speakers. The microphone features a visor-clip to mount the unit to your vehicle's sun-visor. Preset Scan: You can scan all your stored preset stations and listen to the first 10 seconds of each.

Local: The Local function allows only strong radio stations to be received, blocking stations with weaker signals.

European Tuning: You can switch the tuner between USA or European tuning.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Axxera AXV820 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Axxera AXV820 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the AXV820 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the AXV820 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 60 watts x 4 channels (240 watts total)

5ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The AXV820 features front, rear, and subwoofer 4.0-volt preamp outputs. The front & rear speaker preamp outputs are balance/fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Subwoofer Controls: The unit's subwoofer output has a dedicated low-pass filter (80/120/160Hz) and output level adjustment.

Preset EQ Curves: The Axxera DVD Receiver features the following preset EQ curves to customize your music listening. You can choose from User, Flat, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Soft, Vocal, Classic, Dance, Movie, and Hip-Hop.

3-Band EQ: The User Preset EQ setting allows you to adjust the unit's 3-Band EQ.

    • Bass: select from 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 200Hz
    • Midrange: select from 500Hz, 1kHz, 1.5kHz, or 2.5kHz
    • Treble: select from 10khz, 12.5kHz, 15kHz, or 17.5kHz

Loudness: The Loudness function enhances the bass & treble frequencies at low volumes.

Source Volume Level: The Source Volume Level control allows a gain adjustment for each audio source (Disc, SD, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, Tuner, AV1, and AV2). You can set the source volume level for each mode, depending on the relative volume of each audio source.

    AV Connections

Dual A/V Inputs: The Axxera AXV820 DVD receiver is fitted with two audio/video inputs. The unit features a front-panel 3.5mm audio/video input on the front panel of the head unit for connecting a temporary external A/V source, such as a game console.  The head unit also features a composite video/stereo audio RCA input on the rear panel for connecting a permanent external A/V source, such as a Blu-ray player or mobile ATSC tuner.

Note: This rear-panel composite video input also serves as the A/V input for your USB-connected iPod (using included iPod video cable).

Dual Video Outputs: The two rear-panel composite video outputs allow you to connect optional external monitors. You can watch the same audio/video source that is being played on the DVD receiver on your connected external monitors.

Camera Input: The unit features a composite video input for connecting an optional rear view camera (sold separately). The video from this connection can be set to display when switched to this input, or display the rear view camera video automatically when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse gear. The white/brown wire (within 16-pin harness) must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching. Automatic video switching takes approximately 2.3 seconds. The camera image can be set to Normal or Mirrored. Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: In addition to the unit's touchscreen panel and hard-key controls, the AXV820 also comes supplied with a full-functioning IR wireless remote control for convenient operation.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit to allow you to keep your vehicle's radio steering wheel remote controls when used with the optional PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (541SWIRC, sold separately); or the optional Metra ASWC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (120ASWC, sold separately).
