Our take on the Dual XML8150

Dual designed the XML8150 digital media receiver with an integrated flip-out dock that provides a direct connection and mount for your iPhone® or iPod®. You can adjust the mount for vertical or horizontal orientation of your device, whatever works best with the layout of your dashboard. You can use the controls on the receiver or your iPod to access your tunes, and the receiver dock keeps your device charged as you drive, too.

iPod® and iPhone® lovers — here's the receiver for you

Dual designed the XML8150 digital media receiver with an integrated flip-out dock that provides a direct connection and mount for your iPhone® or iPod®. You can adjust the mount for vertical or horizontal orientation of your device, whatever works best with the layout of your dashboard. You can use the controls on the receiver or your iPod to access your tunes, and the receiver dock keeps your device charged as you drive, too.

Dual XML8150

Even more ways to play your tunes

The XML8150 won't play CDs, but you sure won't be at a loss for entertainment. You can use the receiver's front-panel auxiliary input to connect a Dock & Play satellite radio, an MP3 player, or other audio source. You can also use the USB input or SD card slot to play back music files — it's like having a CD changer built into the player.

Dual XML8150

Built-in Bluetooth®

It's time to quit fumbling for your phone when you're driving, as this Dual offers hands-free calling with any compatible phone. When a call comes in, the XML8150 mutes your music, while you conduct your conversation over your vehicle's speakers. If you've got music stored on your mobile device, you'll appreciate how Bluetooth audio streaming lets you listen to your favorite music without plugging in your phone.

Your system, your sound

This Dual's sound controls are a definite step up from most factory systems. The 3-band parametric equalizer lets you adjust the levels and slope of specific frequencies, making it easy to custom tune the audio output to your liking. If you like a one-button approach, select from one of the seven preset EQ curves. Three sets of preamp outputs simplify hooking up amps, and you can even control the level of bass with the subwoofer level control.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Dual stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Dual, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Perfect stereo and for the money you cannot beat it. There aren't an overwhelming number of features to get confused with and it "just works." Installed this myself in a couple of hours and haven't had any problems with it so far. The iPhone dock seems a bit flimsy but I have another dock that sits in a much better position in my car so I don't use it.

Pros: Inexpensive, Bluetooth calling AND audio with iPhone 4S, read the cons on how to setup BT audio though.

Cons: It doesn't say in the instructions how to get Bluetooth audio to work with the player. For a few weeks I was disappointed that it wouldn't stream audio from my iPhone 4S via Bluetooth but then I accidentally found the answer. All you need to do is hit the "Play" button in BT mode and then the receiver will display "Audio Stream." Took a while to figure out, wish it was specified in the instruction manual!

    Great receiver for price

    Jay-J from Seattle on 5/28/2013

    1981 Chevrolet C Series
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for an inexpensive radio for my old truck that would work with my iPod instead of having a CD or cassette. This Dual receiver filled the bill and more. It also has a really good bluetooth interface with an included microphone that works well with my iPhone. My wife says I sound clearer using the bluetooth with the sun-visor mounted microphone than when I use my phone by itself! The iPod dock looks a little weird but it works great - or I can connect the iPod with a cable to the USB connection on the front face. The SD card slot inside is another feature that is an excellent "extra" as far as what I expected to find. I had some trouble at first when I copied a number of albums to an SD card. I copied the albums each to their own file folder and only the first one would play. I had to move all the songs to the root file for the receiver to play through the full list. Not the best solution, but it works.

Pros: All the features I wanted and more. 18 FM presets, 12 AM presets, iPod dock, SD card slot, USB & 1/8" stereo Aux input, bluetooth with included microphone for cell phone hands free function.

Cons: Control buttons are a little small, SD card reader doesn't seem to read seperate album files.

    Pretty good sound

    1983 Mercedes-Benz 300D-T
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Dual XML8150 has quite good sound and of course if a very good value. I don't think it is particularly intuitive in use but reading the instructions helps! Unfortunately the wiring harness provided (at a cost) for my old Mercedes 300D Turbo was not particularly helpful. The 300D runs its four speakers through a fader and connects its grounds prior to connection to the fader. Only a right and left positive/negative run from the fader to the OEM unit. To connect the Dual required bypassing the fader, finding the individual grounds and matching to parts of the harness. This would be true of any aftermarket unit I think.

Pros: Good sound, inexpensive, fairly easy indash install prompt delivery and quick response to my question about whereabouts of wiring harness (it was stuck under a box flap under the peanuts).

Cons: Wiring harness did not really apply to my car.

Great buy, but I found that not all USB sticks work well with the device. Sound quality is good and it was fun using Bluetooth to link my Blackberry for calls. It worked well, and I priced the radio on the web for over $120, so the value was exceptional..

Pros: Great value and easy to use features

Cons: Sony memory stick would not work well, but others worked fine.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed to add Ipod connectivity to my 03 Jeep Liberty. I purchased an adapter through ebay, only to find out that it was not compatible. I then realized I could get a new head unit from Crutchfield, with all accessories for installation (included for free) for the same price. It turned out great, now am I not only able to make handsfree calls through my speakers with bluetooth, but I am also able to control Pandora through the head unit or remote - without having to mess with the Ipod and take my eyes off the road. I haven't used the dock yet, as I don't want to prematurely wear it out, although the usb port works great. Thanks Crutchfield, it's been a while since I last ordered something from you guys, although now that I am reminded of your great deals and service - I will be coming back to complete my stereo system!

Pros: Safe way to listen to your iPod/Pandora and make calls while driving Easy to set up and operate

Cons: Some buttons could be a little larger It had frozen a couple of times, although I think it was Pandora's fault

When I charge my phone and I'm playig music through the aux chord the speakers play a buzzing sound. The USB doesn't charge my phone and I can't play music through it. It also produces a buzzing noise. The buttons are small. It's less than I expected.

    Pros: Price

Cons: Buzzing when charging. Display buttons. Display too dim.

Well it took me three days to figure out the bluetooth function but it is very easy once you are familiar with it. Sound quality much more than expected for the price. I dont have iphone ipod or any apple products . I stream pandora from my galaxy. My biggest deciding factor was the phone option. So much better than using my speaker phone. It did reset once like the battery was diconnected but only once. Time will tell

    Pros: Bluetooth,sound quality,price,price,and price

Cons: Instructions left out very important parts about how to stream music. After pairing you need to hit the #4 play pause button . That drove me nuts

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit was pretty great, especially for the price. However, after about three weeks of use, the built-in iPod dock quit on me completely. I can still use the USB jack for that purpose, but now need to buy some kind of mount for my phone. Also, it would never sync contacts over Bluetooth, don't know why. Looking to probably replace the unit.

Pros: Price, ease of install, iPod dock, good Bluetooth microphone

    Cons: Crappy build quality

I'm sure I would give this a better rating is all the items I needed had arrived in one shipment. Sadly, there was no check list to realize one of the hardnesses was missing and a set of conflicting instructions about whether should have been one. This made wiring a mess. Tech support was helpful and got me back on track and sent the missing parts. I think I'll lke it but, currently still getting station fade and occasional static.

Pros: remote is helpful, bluetooth phone feature works well.

The XLM8150 fit the standard mounting bracket on my Camry. Installation was a snap. I clipped the wired microphone on the visor. The noise cancellation is great. My iPhone works great with this radio. The sound quality may not be the best but it is a good radio for a great price. I use the Bluetooth streaming a lot.

Pros: Bluetooth hands free for the iPhone works good. The Bluetooth streaming also works good.

Cons: The iPhone dock seems a little flimsy but so far it has held up. I really don't use it that much.

Great value and equally good sound. Installed in a 2002 Nissan Sentra with no problem. The reciver faceplate does not allow the reciver door to hinge downward. Cant seem to find a quick fix for this.

Pros: Great value. Good sound with factory speakers, will probably upgrade those next so sound should be even better. Tons of features for bluetooth connectvity, ipod and handsfree phone. Fairly simple to integrate phones and ipods to receiver. Wish th mic was a tad bit smaller.

Cons: Dock arm is a bit flimsy. The in-dash kit does not allow the receiver face to hinge downward. Thats a bit of a problem.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was attracted by price and technology features (circa 2012 okay with me). Installation was not too difficult with the separately purchased wiring harness. Mechanical connections would have been easier but I soldered all the wires to the harness for reliability. Upon installation I was "blown away" after turning it on by the high volume default setting. That was the only major negative. (See Cons.) Luckily, no harm done and I am enjoying the USB and iPhone features that I was seeking. Though an iPone 5 does not fit into the integrated dock, I am just fine with the BlueTooth streaming interface. It brought my 2000 Honda Insight into the iPhone era. I currently have an older iPod Nano in "the dock" and use BlueTooth interface for my iPhone 5.

Pros: Low price. Features I like include USB, blue tooth audio stream. Also, nice microphone for blue tooth phone calls! Audio quality is excellent at normal and higher volume settings.

Cons: Factory set "Programmable Turn-on volume" to 99 in a range of 1 to 49!!! Default was supposed to be OFF! After installation I turned it on and nearly blew the speakers in my car! Took five power-on attempts to figure out and fix the problem. Know how to "Mute!" Hardware workmanship is not the highest quality, but all within tolerances. Control head not the most intuitive, but don't expect more for this price!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very good media player. It syncs to my iPhone without any issues. The call quality was better than I expected. Bluetooth works great, the usb media works great, even the iPod dock is great. The sd card slot work fine if there is not many songs on it, but if you have 500 songs or so, it takes forever to load. Overall though, it works great and I would buy another and recommend to friends.

Pros: Has a lot of options for fine tuning your eq. Sounds great. Bluetooth is great.

Cons: SD card does not load if you have a lot of songs. The remote is a bit touchy at times.

I was bait concerned by other reviewers that buttons were too small and it was complicated to configure.. and the iPhone/iPod cradle was not designed well, but was pleasantly surprised to find the unit exceeded all my expectations and is an incredible value and performs well. I installed in my Ford work pickup, and having the ability to securely cradle the phone so that it is always in a secure place and accessible, was a plus. My only criticism is that the Bluetooth microphone does not seem to have a gain and/or background filtering adjustment

    Pros: Great value and functions

Cons: Does not have Bluetooth notice canceling or gain adjustment features

This stereo was easy to install with the instructions provided by Crutchfield. The radio worked well, my iPhone 4S played well with the stereo via a 30-pin cable, and the sound quality was fine when I made phone calls via Bluetooth. I wasn't able to stream music via Bluetooth. Except for that problem, I'd recommend this stereo. The other reviewers didn't have that problem so it might have been a defect in the unit I received.

    Pros: price, accepts SD cards

Cons: bluetooth audio streaming didn't work

Should have installed a brick instead of this Dual 1850...

Stan from Beacon Falls, CT on 5/4/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At least if I installed a brick I would not have been disappointed when it failed to play music. I replaced my stock 1999 Mercury Mountaineer with this lemon. The radio reception is horrible. I get static for nearby stations that I had perfect reception on the stock unit. But I could plug my iPhone in and play music through that right? WRONG! It resets randomly with the phone plugged in. The bluetooth functionality is non existent. The unit locks up while driving along and requires pulling over and turning the car off and back on to reset it. Kind of a bummer on long drives. I'm off to buy a nice red brick to replace this Dual XML8150. At least it will function as advertised...

    Pros: None

Cons: Doesn't function as a stereo, radio, or bluetooth device

Dual is a great starter deck

Stupac from Redmond, Oregon on 4/21/2013

I have a similar deck from Dual that I put into my 2000 4Runner. It made a huge improvement over the stock deck. Came with Bluetooth for hands-free talk, and audio streaming. I listen to music all the time with it. The audio quality on Bluetooth is almost as good as a cd or 3.5mm jack, but I can tell that the audio loses a bit of quality on the high end. It's okay, though, because its hardly noticeable, and the average listen most likely wouldn't know the difference.

Pros: Bluetooth, 3.5mm jack, and great improvement over most stock systems.

Cons: I've noticed that the Bluetooth loses some audio quality on the higher end of the sound spectrum.

overall a very good deck with lots of connectivity options

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

the best thing about this receiver is the multitude of connectivity options. USB, SD, bluetooth, aux and the dedicated dock. and the price sweetens it even more. it has all the expected RCA outputs so you can hook it up to an external amplifier like i have. my only potential gripe is that sometimes the unit freezes on me and i have to use a paper clip to hit the reset button on the face of the receiver. it could be my phone causing the crash, as it is jailbroken, so im not gonna ding the receiver too much on this review. id give it 4.5 stars if i could.

    Pros: connectivity, price, sound quality

Cons: crashes every once in a while (could be my iphone, though), kinda plasticky

I've had nothing but luck with dual receivers in the past, so when my old one finally wore out i had no worries buying another. this unit has everything it says it does and then some. the settings are a little tricky at first but once you play with the settings once or ttwice you"ll figure it out.

pretty cool unit and easy to install. definitely improved the sound above my factory radio. read the instuctions! this thing has all kinds of settings you would never find without instuctions

    Pros: sounds good

Cons: buttons seem a bit small and close together nothing i can't get used too though

    Great Deal!

I was going to get an Iphone 5 until I got this stereo. At the price if you don't care about the lack of a CD player and you have an iPhone 4 or 4S, then buy this immediately. I plan to get an iPhone 5 eventually, but for now I'm enjoying this Dual.

    Pros: Everything and iPhone arm.

    Cons: No CD player.

    good for the price

the radio works well so far, only problem was it did freeze once requiring me to use the small reset button on the front. Since then have enjoyed very much,

Pros: sounds very well, clear and loud.

Cons: radio tuner could be better but, for the price you get EXACTLY what you pay for, instructions could be written better, have to use try and error method to solve some issues, like making the microphone volume louder.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pretty darn good unit for the money! For a total of 100.00 I spent it improved my factory Bose in my 1999 Maxima drastically. Everything works as advertised, streams Pandora with my Android, USB controls pretty good. My 13 year old Bose speakers with this HU sound vastly superior than the Mach 500 in my 2012 Mustang GT Premium says allot. I have not tried the phone and do not really car how well it works.

Pros: Price, bluetooth, sound, ability to finely tune bass, mid, and treble.

Cons: alittle bit cheaply built, but for the price and sound this good?!?!?

Great Bluetooth radio - streams my iPhone wirelessly and sounds great - all of my music apps work- spotify, pandora and Xm.

Pros: Charges iPhone with USB input- Bluetooth audio sound is great - looks and feels like a quality deck. I've had dual brand decks that felt cheap- this one does not.

Cons: I have iphone 5 so I can't use the arm that pulls out. I've never tried the Bluetooth phone so I can't review that.

    Good for the Price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price it is great. As a tuner it does a fantastic job. With the thumb drive it is mostly good, it sometimes skips like it was a dirty CD, but for the money I can live with that. The Bluetooth works great for phone calls, but the it does not seem to recognize the phone when in navigation mode, or for MP3s on the phone, once again nothing I can't live with for the price I did not buy the stereo for those purposes.

Pros: Inexpensive, Bluetooth for phone calls is awesome, works well with thumb drive

Cons: Acts up at times, thumb drive skips, and Bluetooth only seems to work for phone calls.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very satisfied with this unit. For the price you couldn't ask for a better one. Just a quick note to anyone having problems with streaming audio via Bluetooth...when you change the mode to then have to push the radio station memory button with the play/pause symbol above it, the display will then read "audio stream" then you're good to go. I couldn't find anywhere in the manual where it said to do this. Just got lucky and pressed it. Hope it helps anyone having problems.

    Pros: Price and features.

Cons: None really, other than figuring out how to stream the audio.

    Great Dock, otherwise look elsewhere

Bob from Ashland, NE on 10/10/2012

The integrated dock arm is a great concept. The system lacks in execution, though, with problems in system stability; it turns on and off randomly. The user reviews on another website confirm that this is not a rare phenomenon. As much as I want to like it, I would stay away.

Pros: The dock arm is just a great idea. There's nothing else like it on the market.

Cons: System stability, and though this is a general criticism of practically all aftermarket headunits, it just doesn't look like it belongs in a car dash.

    5-stars for sure

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the money this stereo is near impossible to beat. For twice the money, you might find a better stereo, but find one that looks cooler, I don't think so. The pop-out ipod/iphone holder is the ultimate (of course, this is just for now, with the new iphone 5 and it's new connector) The stereo itself has all the features and functions you need, and the bluetooth connection is great for phone calls in the car.

Pros: ipod/iphone integration with built in dock, bluetooth, price

    Cons: None

    Good receiver for the money

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great and has features that more expensive units have. Face plate folds down to expose a fold out flexible arm that has an end that can swivel to orient the ipod in either vertical or horizontal orientation. If your unit is recessed into your dash, you may not be able to extend the arm out of the way of the faceplate enough to close it. I have a Tahoe and I barely have enough room. The bluetooth works great and comes with an external microphone that can be positioned to pick up your voice very clearly. Much better than my Sony in my other vehicle. Good sound quality when using the ipod. Radio is average. Overall, a very good value.

Pros: good sound quality from ipod, good value, looks cool, lots of sound adjustments, inputs and outputs.

Cons: Radio sound quality is average, faceplate non-removable.

    Still not sure its OK

Not 100% sure about this unit yet. I installed it and it ran fine for one day. However the next time I tried to use it in my car it would not respond to either remote or faceplate buttons. I had to finally disconnect the jack on the back, and reconnect it to get it to wake up again.

Auxiliary Input:  The XML8150 features a front-panel 3.5mm auxiliary input for temporary connecting an external portable audio device, such as a portable MP3 player.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Built-in Bluetooth: Bluetooth hands-free communication is built into the Dual XML8150, making it easy to integrate a Bluetooth enabled cellular phone (up to 10). Bluetooth is a two-way wireless communication system allowing you to make & receive cell phone calls, or stream digital audio from your Bluetooth enabled phone on the XML8150 digital media receiver.

    • Hands-free Communications (HFP): The built-in Bluetooth hands-free feature allows you to talk on your cell phone through the XML8150 without the need of holding it in your hand, which helps avoid any traffic violations by keeping you focused on the road. Incoming calls will be automatically appear on the display and a ring tone will heard through your car speakers. You can answer a call from the head unit or have the head unit automatically answer any incoming calls. You can dial a number from the head unit or the included remote control. In addition, you can view a list of the 10 most recent phone calls dialed, received, or missed. The XML8150 even supports call waiting. An external microphone is included for better audio performance (no integrated front-panel mic).
    • Audio Streaming (A2DP/AVRCP): The built-in Bluetooth audio streaming feature allows you to stream digital audio from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone to the XML8150 & control the playback of the audio through the head unit.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some mobile devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the XML8150.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Dual XML8150 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, scan, & preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: The built-in AM/FM tuner allows you to store up to 18 FM station presets and 12 AM station presets. You can tune your presets manually or have the head unit do it automatically.

Scan Tuning: Press the Scan button on the included remote control to preview strong stations on the current band, pausing for five seconds at each. Press Scan again to select station or cancel the function.

Local: The Local function allows only strong radio stations to be received, blocking stations with weaker signals.

European Tuning: You can switch the tuner between USA or European tuning.

HD Radio Ready (with iTunes Tagging): HD Radio operation requires connection of the Dual HDM90 HD Radio tuner (070HDM90, sold separately). With HD Radio you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. The Dual HDM90 HD Radio tuner is also capable of iTunes tagging. iTunes tagging gives you the ability to tag a song (up to 64) and stores it to a connected iPod. The next time your iPod is connected to iTunes, the tagged songs are displayed with the option to purchase them from the iTunes Store.

Note: This function can be operated with the following iPod/iPhone models - iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th gen), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen), & iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4/4S).

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Dual XML8150 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the XML8150 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the XML8150 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 60 watts x 4 channels (240 watts total)

Preset EQ Curves: The Dual CD Receiver features the following preset EQ curves to customize your music listening - Flat, Pop, Jazz, Classic, Beat, Rock, or User.

3-Band EQ: The User Preset EQ setting allows you to adjust the unit's 3-Band EQ.

Band Selectable Center Frequency Quality Factor Level
    Bass 60, 80, 100, or 200Hz 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0 -6 to +6 dB
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.5 kHz 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25 -6 to +6 dB
    Treble 10, 12.5, 15, or 17.5 kHz N/A -6 to +6 dB

Loudness: The Loudness function enhances the bass & treble frequencies at low volumes.

2V/6Ch Preamp Outputs: The Dual XML8150 is equipped with three pair of 2-Volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front & rear speakers are fading, while the subwoofer output is non-fading. The subwoofer preamp output's level can be adjusted independently from 0-12. Adjusting the subwoofer level to 0 turns the subwoofer output off.

Subwoofer Control: The unit's non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs feature a variable low-pass filter (80, 120, 160Hz, or Off) and output level (0-12).

Source Volume Level: The Source Volume Level control allows a gain adjustment for each audio source (Tuner, iPod, Aux, SD/SDHC, and USB). You can set the source volume level (+/-6dB) for each mode, depending on the relative volume of each audio source.

Program Volume: You can se the XML8150 to power-on to the same volume level (1-46) every time.

Key Beep: When this function is enabled, every button press will output a beep tone.

    Display Features

Fold-Down Front-Panel: The head unit's front panel folds down to access the unit's SD-card slot and integrated iPod dock. The front-panel display needs approximately 2" of clearance in front of it to open.

Note: The clock can be set to stay on even when the head unit is turned off.

Power-On Message: This feature allows a "Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening" text message to be shown on the unit's LCD screen when it is powered on.
