Our take on the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 14mm f/2.8 R

If you've spent any time working on shot composition, you've run in to this situation over and over: somehow, you can't locate yourself in a place where you can fit your whole subject in your frame. Real estate agents know this pain well. They're often tasked with fitting a whole room in view to feature their listings —  while having to be in that same room. This is when an extra-wide angle offering like this Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 lens can come in handy. Perfect for sweeping landscapes, dramatic architectural vistas, or cramped indoor spaces, this 21mm equivalent lens will add creative latitude and impressive low light performance to your compatible Fujifilm X-Mount camera. Fujifilm's Fujinon lenses have been justifiably legendary for their optics and build quality over the decades. Consider this a wise investment in your camera's long-term utility.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I always knew that there is a whole new different and more exciting way of seeing the world because I've seen it in magazines; even knowing well that you can't always believe what you see. Well if seeing is believing and it is then I have finally seen thru the xf 14mm lens. This lens just opened up a whole new wonderful and exciting way of seeing the world with absolute optical clarity and magical colors.

Pros: Excellent optical clarity No distinguishable distortion Solid build

Cons: Plastic lens hood

Stunning wide angle lens

Ed in NJ from White House Station, NJ on 2/7/2014

Fuji has always made stunningly good lenses. I have several large format Fuji lenses that just wipe the floor with any lens except those that are 4x the price (and beats a few of those too.) This lens, and pretty much the whole Fujifilm XF line, continue the tradition. I've shot this lens straight into the sunrise, straight into sunsets, hard backlit subjects, and it is VERY hard to generate flare. Not impossible, but really hard. And you do want to use that lens hood, all the time. Under any circumstances, it produces crisp images with excellent contrast and edge sharpness. Focus is so fast that sometimes I wonder if it did focus. It's bigger than you might expect, but is also lighter than you might expect. I'm a wide angle shooter, and this lens holds its own and more against the best wide primes I have on my DSLR kit. This lens, with the 35mm 1.4, and 60mm, are an incredible "holy trinity" prime kit for the Fuji X line. I go out with that kit and my XPro1 all the time.

Pros: crisp sharpness, contrasty, flare resistant, light

Cons: not as wide as I'd like, bigger than you might expect

Great lens

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you have read the reviews by third party testers you know this is one of the best of the Fuji-X lens. While not the fastest out there, the 14MM wide angle view is unmatched, at least until the Fuji 10-24MM zoom comes out. But that lens will be bigger and heavier. This is a good balance in construction, size, weight, price and performance. Hard to beat anywhere. I find it handles very well on the XE bodies.

Fuji wide angle lens

Truths2k05 from Miami,Fl on 6/27/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this as the second lens for the XE-1. I had previously bought the XE-1 lens camera kit which came with the 18-55mm lens and that lens is great. This lens is fantastic, very clear and no distortion to the image. You can only tell that it's a wide angle at the edges of the image.

Pros: Quality lens,light weight,excellent images.

Cons: A little expensive, but you definitely get yours money's worth.

Overview: The Fujinon XF14 F2.8 R is an ultra wide angle lens. It has a Fujifilm X-mount, and is designed exclusively for Fujifilm X-mount digital cameras, such as the X-E1 and X-Pro1. Its 14mm focal length is equivalent to 21mm in 35mm photography. The XF14 F2.8 R lens can be used for a wide variety of landscape and architectural photos, as well as in confined spaces.

Firmware Update Required: The X-E1 and X-Pro 1 cameras must go through a firmware update before the lens can be used. The updated firmware for both cameras is included with the lens on an SD memory card. The process takes only about 90 seconds, and the camera's battery should be fully charged before you begin.

Optics: The XF14 F2.8 R has 10 elements in 7 groups, including 2 aspherical and 3 extra low dispersion elements. The lens has a 58mm filter thread for adding screw-on filters.

Lens Hood: The lens comes with a bayonet-type lens hood to reduce glare and to protect the front element. When attached, the lens hood adds almost 1-7/16" to the overall length of the lens.

Focus Mode: The XF14 F2.8 R has a focus ring that slides forward or backward to set the focus mode. When the focus ring is in the forward position, it is in Autofocus mode and cannot be rotated. Sliding the focus ring backward places the lens in Manual focus mode, allowing you to rotate the ring to focus on your subject.

Depth-of-Field Indicator: The lens has a Depth-of-Field Indicator on the barrel. The scale runs from 0.7' to infinity, indicating the approximate distance in front of and behind the focus point that appears to be in focus. The scale has marks at 0.7', 1', 2', 5', and infinity. as well as 0.18m, 0.25m, 0.5m, and 3m.
