Our take on the Cobra Vedetta SLR 500 by Crutchfield's Dominic DeVito
Turn your preconceptions about radar detectors upside-down
Cobra's versatile Vedetta SLR 500 radar detector gives you more mounting flexibility than you'll know what to do with. Its advanced design lets you place it nearly anywhere on the windshield or dash while accessing a handy, informative 2.4" color display that works at nearly any angle. And you'll enjoy long-range protection so you can relax and drive without worry.
"Vedetta" is Italian for "lookout"
The Vedetta SLR 500 isn't just another pretty face — it provides reliable, rapid warnings against common radar and laser bands. Cobra loaded this Vedetta detector with their most powerful detection technology yet . You'll know instantly if there are X, K, Ka, or Ku bands in use up ahead — for up to 9 miles in front of your vehicle in some instances.
Get more info from nearly any angle
You'll see more info at a glance with the SLR 500's handy color LCD screen. The screen swivels on a multi-axis hinge that allows 270 degrees of vertical movement and 60 degrees of horizontal adjustment. The detector itself offers a ball-socket mounting bracket for maximum versatility when placing it in your car. Whether you mount it on the windshield or dash, you'll be able to position the screen for easy viewing. The display features seven convenient touch controls for easy access to settings and menu functions.
The easy-to-read display shows your current filtering mode (city or highway), battery voltage, and mute settings, as well as alerts for laser pulse rate and radar band type, strength, and frequency. When you're not using the detector, you can fold up the screen to keep it out of your line of sight.
Don't let false alerts throw you
The SLR 500 lets you cruise without annoying false alerts and other annoying diversions. You can employ IntelliShield™ filtering in the city to eliminate automatic door and garage opener signals that could set the detector off falsely. IntelliMute™ speed-based sensitivity uses your engine's RPMs to determine if you should hear an alert or not, based on how fast you are going.
Sorry, but we cannot ship radar detectors to Virginia or the District of Columbia.

Vedetta Series: The Cobra SLR 500 is part of the Vedetta Ultimate Detection Systems Series. It detects all radar guns and laser guns in use today. This new series offers a 30% increase in performance over Cobra's previous flagship model. The Vedetta Series provides a 2.4" color LCD display, and a new adjustable mount.
2.4" LCD Display: The SLR 500 features a 2.4" LCD screen with an easy-to-glance graphical display to help you keep your eyes on the road. The display is mounted on a ball-socket suction cup bracket, allowing you to mount the detector virtually anywhere on the dash or windshield. The display can be rotated 270 degrees vertically, allowing you to choose a flip-up or a flip-down position, and turn the display 60 degrees for best visibility from the driver's seat. The orientation of the display can easily be set to match the mounting position. If desired, you can mount the display on the dash using the provided self-adhesive hook-and-loop fasteners.
Touch-Point Controls: The display has touch point controls on the outer edges of the screen that light up automatically to show you available options. The controls include Volume (1-7), Display Brightness (1-5) Left/Right Scroll, City/Highway Mode, Select, and Menu/Save & Exit.
Screen Indicators: The Standby screen will indicate the vehicle battery voltage, city/highway mode, and the IntelliMute status. During a Radar alert, the screen shows the Radar band type, frequency, and signal strength in numerals and bar graph. With Laser signals, the screen will indicate "Laser" and the pulse rate (100, 125, 130, 200, 238, or 340).
Audible Alerts: In addition to visual alerts, the unit provides audible alerts. The audible alerts can be set to tone or voice.
Vehicle Battery Voltage: The SLR 500 monitors the voltage of the vehicle's battery, and displays the voltage in the Standby Screen. The unit will alert you if the battery voltage drops below 11.9 volts. The low battery warning can be turned on or off in the Alert Settings menu.
Radar Alert Settings: The SLR 500 lets you customize the detector to suit your needs. Each of the four radar bands (X, K, Ka, and Ku) can be toggled on or off.
Note: Laser monitoring cannot be turned off.
IntelliShield: Quad-level IntelliShield provides protection against false alerts from Automatic Door Openers and other devices which operate in the X and K-band frequencies. to minimize unwanted false alerts in a city environment, you can select one of the following city modes:
- City X: automatically mutes X-band audible alert until signal strength reaches level 3 or above.
- City X+K: combined with City X, automatically mutes K-band audible alerts until signal strength reaches level 2 or above.
- City X+K+Ka: combined with City X+K, automatically mutes Ka-band audible alerts until signal strength reaches level 2 or above.
- City Max: Maximum filtering against urban false signal sources.
IntelliMute: IntelliMute allows you to avoid audible alerts you don't need to hear because you are either stopped or moving slowly. By sensing the RPMs of the engine, IntelliMute knows that you are driving at a low speed and automatically mutes all alerts (except for strobe signals from emergency vehicles). You must first set an activation point for your engine's RPMs, and when the revs go below that point, IntelliMute begins muting. Once set, the activation point is stored in memory.
Smart Power: The SLR 500 is powered by a 6' straight cord that plugs into your vehicle's cigarette lighter or 12-volt power adapter. The SmartPower feature, when activated, puts the unit into Standby mode for about 15 minutes after the car's engine has been turned off. After 30 minutes in Standby mode, the unit will automatically shut off.
