Our take on the Focal Performance R-130S2

Make no mistake, Focal's Auditor Series R-130S2 component system will put your factory speakers to shame. Years of weather-damage and even the most conservative listening will degrade the paper cone speakers that came with your car. Focal built the two 5-1/4" woofers, two tweeters, and two external crossovers in the R-130S2 system to withstand that kind of damage while delivering robust sound.

Affordable Focals

Phase plug

The R-130S2's woofers feature a central phase plug for enhanced sound dispersion.

Listening to Focal speakers is an absolute pleasure, and now you can do it with a guilt-free conscience. Focal's Auditor Series speakers offer solid performance at a competitive price.

Time for a change

Make no mistake, Focal's Auditor Series R-130S2 component system will put your factory speakers to shame. Years of weather-damage and even the most conservative listening will degrade the paper cone speakers that came with your car. Focal built the two 5-1/4" woofers, two tweeters, and two external crossovers in the R-130S2 system to withstand that kind of damage while delivering robust sound.

The woofer's polypropylene cone and butyl rubber surround will deliver a new richness of bass and midrange articulation, and the cone features a phase plug for better sound dispersion. Prepare to be moved by the bright highs and crisp detail broadcast by the "Silk Aluminum" tweeters, and gain a whole new appreciation for driving your car again.

Crossover to a new dimension

This system's external crossovers ensure a seamless distribution of frequencies to the woofer and tweeter, for a totally natural sound. The crossovers are prewired and compact enought to fit in some pretty tight places. With included mounting hardware, you'll have the tools you need to enhance stereo imaging by installing these tweeters in a good spot high up in your doors, in the sail panel, or on the dash.

Installation note #1: The package includes flush-mount tweeter housings, but no flush-mount hardware. You'll have to devise a way to hold those flush-mount housings in place.

Installation note #2: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Speakers sound great! One of the tweeters had a bad solder and I had to re-solder it. Other than the wire everything was great.

Replaced the factory mid and tweeters with these reasonably priced focal components. Added an alpine head unit and 45x4 power pack! Now just Need to throw in sub and monoblock and I'll be good to go! Focals are great!

Pros: Price, good signal to noise ratio, relatively low wattage makes for realistic power consumption ratings!

Cons: Not quite as high quality as I'd expect from focal but then again these aren't $400 a pair either so...

Incredibly bright - pain to listen to

2016 Volkswagen Golf
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a preface to this review, I do have a tendency to like warm rich sound. For example, my other vehicle is a Lexus GX460 with the factory stereo which to me sounds absolutely wonderful. I listen to all types of music except EDM and I like it clean and accurate (no big bass/cripsy highs for me). I purchased these speakers as a last ditch attempt to get decent sound into my 2016 VW eGolf. They are powered via a Soundstream 5 channel nano amp, supplemented with a small 8" sub, and fed via stock headunit connected to LC7i dsp. I had pretty high expectations based on the reviews and refrained from posting for several months to make sure they had properly broken in. No matter what adjustments I make these things are so bright it pains me to listen to them. In fact, I dread getting into the car and listening to anything but FM radio because I know I will instantly get annoyed by the harsh ear-piercing sound. These speakers will be replaced soon.

Pros: Relatively inexpensive.

Cons: Bright!!

1999 Toyota Camry LE
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am not gonna lie to anyone. I am slightly disappointed with these speakers as I had installed Pioneer 6x9s which overwhelm these Focals like its their job! However, after a short break-in period, they have started to sound (slightly) better than before. The tweeters sound pretty good, but are not as clean as I had expected for the price, and clean up the sound stage and improved imaging. The woofers are the issue though. As stated in another review these speakers produce NO bass at all. Midbass is very subtle as well and the "Focal warmth" just isn't as apparent as I had expected. The Focals are begging for a little more power than the Pioneers as well but it isn't anything a little fader adjustment couldn't fix. Desperately, I purchased new speakers to have a good set up for commuting but I have been left slightly disappointed for the price. Perhaps a 6.5 variant of this speaker would have been a better design and fit for my vehicle and some others as well. Note: My 1999 Toyota did not have the JBL system, and the stock speakers actually sounded just as good in a few aspects as the Focals.

Pros: Clear sound that is well defined even with the lack of Midbass and Bass.

Cons: Low sensitivity, expensive, and bass that Sherlock Holmes wouldn't be able to find.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound is crisp and clear and sounds amazing very good bang for your buck. They also get very loud and sound amazing when you hook them up to an amp.

Pros: Crisp highs and good mid ads for 5 1/4 speakers. Tweeters are nice and big.

Cons: Said it would hook up to my door speakers but I had to hook up to my dash speakers. Not a big deal but took longer than expected.

2015 Honda Accord
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers expecting a major improvement over the stock speakers in my 2015 Honda Accord Sport. I was greatly disappointed. These speakers have very poor midbass response the way they're mounted. I completely lost definition in my music. My car could accommodate 6 1/2" speakers, but these are only 5 1/4" woofers. I think that this may have something to do with the poor sound. I will be returning these and purchasing something with 6 1/2" woofers.

Pros: Raises the sound stage from the floor, clear sound

Cons: Poor midbass response (may have to do with the way they're mounted in my car)

Awesome Speakers!

Installed these in my 2014 Accord LX with the stock head unit and couldn't be happier! The tweeters are SO clear and crisp I can now hear more detail in my music than I ever had before! The woofers are ok...not a ton of bass, but they are definitely better than my stock speakers!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This speakers are easy to install great quality. Mid bass on a 5 1/4 is not going to be that good but sounded better than Polk db component.I have an altima 07 I was told 6 1/2 speakers wouldn't fit but there are brackets that you can buy not from Crutchfield. I got the is165 focal 6 1/2 and compared it with this speakers. Please get the 6 1/2 better mid bass and it sounds like music is played at the lower frequency range rather than playing it on the higher end frequency like the 5 1/4. To me this speakers got the highs covered but u will need a subwoofer to compliment the lows. Tweeters sound awesome not harsh very balanced.sounds good even with stock radio

Pros: Balanced highs crisp sound , small crossover easy to connect

Cons: Lacks mid bass, if u can get the 6 1/2 auditor or higher end iss165 focal

great sound and quality at a great price

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the higher frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.

Tweeter Mounting: The tweeters can be flush mounted, surface mounted, or surface mounted at an angle (approximately 30°) using the included adapters. Once installed in any of the housings, the tweeter will pivot approximately 15° in any direction.

Note: Although the tweeters are shipped in their flush mount housings, no flush mount hardware is included. A method of holding the housings in place must be fabricated.

Tweeter Dimensions:

Flush Mount Surface Mount Angled Surface Mount
Mounting Height 0.4" 1.24" 1.735"
Depth 0.835" screw depth screw depth
Frame Diameter 2.357" 1.985" 1.985" x 1.9"
Cutout Diameter 1.981" N/A N/A

Crossover: The input and output wires are attached to the crossover. The 19" input wires are not terminated (bare wire). Both the woofer and tweeter output wires are 10" long and terminated with quick slides to easily attach to the drivers. The crossover slope is 12 dB/octave.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 2-7/8" (3-1/8" including wires)
  • Height: 7/8"
  • Depth: 1-5/8"

One word, WOW!

Written by Jude, Director, Digital Imaging, on 9/4/2014 8:23:00 AM

I recently purchased a set of these to replace a pair of 4" Sound Ordnance coax speakers in the front door of my son's 2002 Pontiac Sunfire. The 4" speakers sounded good, but with two 12" subs in a band pass enclosure and 6.5" components in the back deck, they were just getting overpowered.

We used the .75" lift rings (item #003SG525DX) to get us the depth we needed since these speakers are not recommended for this car, but we found there was enough room between the door and door panel to accommodate and the gaps that were present we sealed with Dynamat.

We mounted the tweeters in the factory mounting pods that are part of the door and connected these to the power of just the radio which is the JVC KD-R950BT. All I can say is WOW! They sound clear, the highs are crisp, and all the detail just makes the music we have been listening to sound all new again. If you are looking for great sound with clarity and performance, these will do the trick. My son and I are sold!

1 question already asked

Cross over separates high and low frequency. All pre wired so just attach speaker wire. Mine sits in door panel for fronts. [ Joshua  Jan 05, 2015 ]
the wiring is already set to the crossover this is a simple crossover no option to lower tweeter settings easy set up and small crossover This is the lower end of focal so it won't compare to the higher priced focal crossover options and quality but it does separate the mids and highs Sound is balanced [ Jesus  Jan 05, 2015 ]
The external crossover that comes with the speakers separates the stander signal coming from the standard radio output so the tweeters can use it more efficiently but still allowing the speaker to remain at a more common setting. I hope this helps ! [ Terry  Jan 04, 2015 ]
