Our take on the Focal K2 Power 165KR

The K2 Power 165KR 6-1/2" component speaker system bears the hallmarks of Focal's "Power Hi-Fi" philosophy. The nimble Aramid and glass-fiber woofers demonstrate the control needed to reproduce delicate classical passages, yet they'll handle the power needed to drive your bass-heavy music with authority. The sturdy zinc-aluminum alloy baskets are non-magnetic so they won't interfere with the speaker's own electronics.

Focal's sound gurus engage in intensive listening sessions as they design a new line of speakers, making it their mission to create products that deliver uncanny realism, sweeping dynamics, and breathtaking depth. Inverted dome tweeter design

Focal's inverted dome tweeter offers exceptional dispersion.

Inverted dome tweeter design

Focal's inverted dome tweeters act like little woofers, dispersing the highs in a wide pattern to create an exceptionally natural soundstage. K2 Power crossovers use hand-made components developed by Focal to deliver an ideal blend of the highs and lows for a dynamic stereo image. Three levels of tweeter and two levels of midrange control let you dial in the sound to your car's environment.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Great speakers, Great sound

2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered these a few weeks ago on a Black Friday sale. I had been looking for a while and the price finally dropped enough for me to pick up. I installed in my Jeep Wrangler in the lower and upper dash. I got everything in and it sounded great. The weird thing is, I started to hear a rattle in the left mid. I thought maybe it was blown and was upset that I tore the whole dash apart to get them in and now one was blown. I was worried I just paid 400 bucks for speakers only to have one blown. I was not to happy. I called crutchfield and let them know what had happened. The lady on the phone was fantastic. She said no problem I will overnight you a new pair. She said take the part you need and put the others back in the box and return. Super easy and awesome that they really asked no questions. GREAT customer service. Anyway, the speakers came the next day and I put in the other one. I tested before I reinstalled and still the rattle. I opened up the box and the wire connectors were hitting the side of the box and causing the rattle. I adjusted the wires and no more rattle. AWESOME! I was so happy. The sent me new speakers for nothing and it was as quick and painless as possible. Overall I am super happy with the mids and highs. The sound is a total 180 compared to the kicker two ways I had. Although I did have them running off of the head unit. I now have an alpine pdr-v75 running both mids highs and sub. The sound is so clear and crisp now with just enough bass. Thank y

Pros: Powerful speakers that can handle a lot of power. Music is crisp and clean.

Cons: The speakers will hurt your ears if you turn them up to loud.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are wonderful. I have been running the Focal lines for years now. I have the 165KR components in the front doors of my 2017 Silverado and I have the Focal 165KRC coaxials in my rear doors. They are being powered by a JL HD600.4 and the doors are sound deadened. The head unit is the Kenwood DDX9903s. These speakers are played along with a JL 13.5" TW5 subwoofer powered by a Focal FDP 900.1. The system sounds phenomenal. The sound stage of the truck is focused on my driver seat and these speakers really help set the tone of the system. The highs are clear and clean while the mid bass passes seamlessly down to the bass in the subwoofer. There is no gap in volume between my mid-bass and bass so when the bassist slides to the end of his guitar it doesn't all of a sudden get louder as the frequencies pass from the mids to the bass. Now I will say, I took a long time playing with DSP and the EQ to get it set how I like it. I did end up actually slightly dialing back the tweeters -3db because at first they were just a little too bright. The highs are wonderful still. Every time their is a symbol crash or high hat, it doesn't sound like a piece of tin coming through the speakers, it sounds like the actual instrument with the full range of frequencies. I also play music files in 24 Bit FLAC or 24 Bit WAV only to match the quality the speakers deserve. It sounds like I am sitting live in the studio with the artists every time I hear these play.

Pros: Full, dynamic sound at all frequencies from mids to highs. Sound stage when setup properly is wonderful. Sounds like the musicians are right there.

Cons: Tweets at first may be a little bright for taste, but you can tone them back a bit like I did. Not really a con when it's easily fixed.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Balanced, distortion free and ultra clean. So clean that no longer need to launder my clothes. I just hop in my truck to listen to music and my clothes are ultrasonically cleansed by the pure sound waves emanating from their cones. Seriously, though, they were a significant step up from my 6x9 Infinity Kappa coaxials which exhibited hissing and were overly bright. These Focals are much more balanced while still hitting the highs when called for and bring out details that I'd never heard in songs before. Catching these on sale was nice plus as I'd be had pressed to ever pay full retail for truck speakers at that price point. The only ding I can offer up is that the manual is pretty useless if you want more than the detailed specs. To save you time the cross over settings for the tweeter are 0bd, -3db, and -6db, Depending on their location relative to your ear, you may need to dial them in accordingly. In a full sized truck with them mounted in the A pillar, 0 is suitable. The other switch sets the mid woofer for either "Flat' or "high". I set mine to "high" and it seemed to brighten up the higher frequencies.

Pros: Awesome sound at a huge discount.

Cons: Useless manual.

Very pleased with this purchase

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic product. really exceeds expectations. i replaced a set of 5.25 Morels (brand new) with these, and was astonished at how much more they filled in the mids. Really warm sound, but very clear.

Pros: great quality, physically and acoustically.

Cons: no cons. had to dremel the locking tabs off the tweeter housings to get them to fit in stock location in my application (987).

Decent for the price

Mikolai from Chicago, IL on 5/30/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The packaging is very nice and the way the speakers feel and quality is past what is was expecting. All of the pieces have a good weight to them so you now they have some effort put in. I have not been able to play them yet but I'm sure they are a large improvement over my s4 stock rear speakers. Pricing is fear.

Pros: Quality construction. Included grilles and tweeter cup.

Cons: Cheat terminals on the midrange.

Crisp and Clear Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The most crisp and clear speakers I have ever owned. I have paired these with a JLAudio ported 8" sub all powered by a 5 channel JL Audio amp in my Ford F-150 supercrew and absolutely love it!

Pros: beautiful highs and mids play well both at low and high volumes

Cons: must be paired with sub

Great sound, easy setup.

2007 Toyota 4Runner
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good component speaker, fits my Toyota 4Runner with no issue. As mentioned when purchasing, the tweeter mount needs to be constructed. NO issue here, just copied the old mount and build my own mount with it. The sound coming off the mid range and tweeter are very good; once the x-over is set up to my liking. I would have given this a 5, if not for the size of the x-over itself. It is quite large to keep within the door frame (I like it to keep it close to the mid-range and tweeter) and I have to modify the door trimming a little bit to accommodate the x-over. Focal did not disappoint... I am satisfied with the speaker performance.

2015 GMC Sierra 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had these 165kr components installed in 2015 GMC Sierra front doors with the tweeters in true dash corners. In the rear doors used the 165krc coxials. Running them off the factory 8inch touchscreen radio through a jl audio twk 88 dsp to a jl audio rd/900/5 amp. Which also powers two jl tw3 subs in sealed downfiring enclosure. All I can say is wow this has to be the best sounding system I have ever had and believe me I have had a lot of systems.

Pros: Incredible sound quality and produce awesome sounding vocals with crisp highs.

Cons: Expensive especially if you don't get in on the sale price these are now but usually if you want a high quality product you get what you pay for. So overall worth the money.

Focal K2 Power 165KR

Chuck from Yuba City, CA on 8/29/2016

I had these professionally installed in front doors, the k2 165 krc in back doors, of my 2007 GMC Sierra crew cab. Along with JVC head unit, JL audio 300/4, and Focal elite speaker wire and RCAs. They sound very good, handle power with finesse, but as was previously stated in an earlier review, they really impressed with high quality recordings. Don't waste your money on these if your going to put crap recordings through them. Very high quality can only shine with high quality recordings.

Pros: Very high quality

Cons: None

Focal speakers are phenomenal

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are for people who want to hear music as it was meant to be heard. So if your entire library consists of torrents and crap mp3 recordings you likely won't be impressed with the sound. However if you enjoy hirez, flac, and aiff recordings these speakers will shine brilliantly.

Pros: Amazingly accurate sound reproduction

Cons: Little pricy but you get what you pay for.

SteveB from Bremerton, wa on 5/20/2012

Installed these in a not so factory location on an 04 Subaru WRX paired with a MTX 400.1 Thunder amp (100X4) (75wRMS @ 2ohms) They sounded amazing at first, until one of the speakers blew out. At this price they are spendy to replace. Included crossover cuts low level a little too high for my taste and tuning with the head unit took a lot of time. There are components out there that sound almost as good for a fraction of the price. Current stereo set up is Clarion Proaudio head unit, MTX 400.4 amp (doors) Focal 165KR components in front door, Focal 5.25 2-way rear doors, rockford fosgate t2500.1 amp with 12" T2 dual 2ohm subwoofer and fosgate 2 farrad capacitor.

Pros: Amazing sound when properly tuned

Cons: expensive to replace, giant magnets hard to fit in doors to still allow window to roll all the way down.

Best Speakers I've Ever Heard

Vette Setter from Houston, TX on 5/4/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own a '08 Corvette convertible and was looking for a set of door speakers that would fit in my over the top stereo project. These Focal components are them. I needed clear sound all the way up to blisteringly loud because with the top down at 70 mph the factory Bose couldn't even be heard at full volume. These are the loudest clearest speakers I've ever heard. Well worth the money, above and beyond my expectations.

ryan1764 from Rockwall, TX on 6/24/2010

I have these installed in my 96 Chevy Z71 and they are just spectacular! Crystal clear sound without any disortion or muddiness. I am running about 80 watts to them and they are super loud. They are the best sounding speakers i have ever heard or owned. I have had other high-end speakers and neither even come close to the sound of these Focals. Bass output is great for them being 6.5" speakers. Buy a pair, you won't regret it!

K2 Cone: The woofer cone is a sandwich composite consisting of a foam core, a structural glass fiber bottom layer, and a Kevlar top layer. This combination of materials results in a rigid, light weight cone with excellent damping characteristics.

Surround: The butyl rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Zamak Basket: The woofer features a cast Zamak basket. Zamak is a rigid alloy of Zinc, Aluminum, Magnesium, and Copper. Zamak is non-magnetic.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.

Inverted Dome Tweeter: The tweeter is an inverted Kevlar dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions.

Mounting Options: The tweeter can be surface or flush mounted using the included adapters. Focal recommends flush mounting, but the included angled cup allows surface mounting at one of two angles; approximately 15° and approximately 40°.

Components: Focal uses audiophile grade polypropylene capacitors and air core inductors to ensure high definition and a dynamic sound quality.

Tweeter Level: You can adjust the output level of the tweeter on the crossover to -6 dB, -3 dB, or 0 dB.

Midrange Level: Set the midrange output to High or Flat to match their position in the car. When the mids are installed low in the door, some of the output is absorbed by the upholstery and they benefit from the High output setting.

Crossover Slopes: The crossover uses 2nd order, 12 dB per octave low-pass and high-pass filters. The crossover frequency for both is 3,800 Hz.

Wiring: The inputs and outputs are screw terminals; they will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.315" wide.

I love mine definitely the most expensive speakers I have ever had. To get them to come alive as with any high end speakers you must have a good clean signal. To feed them along with a quality amplifier. I am using a jl audio rd900/5 in my system. They have good mid bass and highs but you will need a subwoofer to produce the low bass. I hope this helps David. [ David  Oct 30, 2017 ]
