Overview

Our take on the Focal K2 Power 165 KR2

The K2 Power 165 KR2 6-1/2" component speaker system bears the hallmarks of Focal's "Power Hi-Fi" philosophy. Nimble woofers made from Aramid and glass fibers demonstrate the control needed to reproduce delicate classical passages, yet they'll handle the power needed to drive your bass-heavy music with authority. The sturdy zinc-aluminum alloy baskets are non-magnetic so they won't interfere with the speaker's own electronics. And this 2-ohm system extracts maximum power from your stereo or amp so you'll get more punch from your system.

Focal's sound gurus engage in intensive listening sessions as they design a new line of speakers, making it their mission to create products that deliver uncanny realism, sweeping dynamics, and breathtaking depth. During the hands-on production process, they test every model meticulously to ensure that they meet Focal's exacting standards.

Inverted dome tweeter design

Inverted dome tweeter design

Focal's inverted dome tweeters act like little woofers, dispersing the highs in a wide pattern to create an exceptionally natural soundstage. K2 Power crossovers use hand-made components developed by Focal to deliver an ideal blend of the highs and lows for a dynamic stereo image. The 165 KR2's crossover features three levels of tweeter control, a tweeter "slope softening" selector, and two levels of midrange control so you can dial in the sound to your car's environment.

Important Note: These Focal K2 Power speakers use a low impedance design to pull more power safely from your car stereo or amplifier. This design is compatible with virtually all factory and aftermarket stereos.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Amazing sound and got a great deal on the speakers from Crutchfield

Pros: Extremely clear

Cons:

Quality.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Feeding these components with a Pioneer PRS-D800 amp. Sounds fantastic after a few hours of listening to break them in. The tweeters and woofers are very accurate. The crossovers have enough settings to be able to fine tune the sound to satisfy all but the most discerning listeners. I enjoy cruising on the highway with the windows down and these speakers allow me to drown out the wind noise with clear musical sounds. If I were to build a system without a subwoofer, these components would be on the shortlist of speakers to use; the woofers can really move air! Instead, I've paired these components with a Focal K2 Power 27 KX subwoofer being feed by another Pioneer PRS-D800.

Pros: Sounds fantastic. Quality build.

Cons: Tweeter wires not labeled. Takes some time to really shine.

Amazingly accurate and lifelike sound

Nick from St Louis, MO on 6/13/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This component set sounds absolutely amazing when paired with a high quality amp. I debated spending the money to move up to the K2 line, and initially decided to try to Polyglass line instead. The Polyglass sound good. These sound like something sent to earth in a capsule from Planet Audiophile. If you're debating whether they're worth the additional money, stop debating right now and go buy them. You will not regret it.

Pros: Amazing sound, clarity, and lifelike reproduction of everything including vocals.

Cons: Price

Porsche Boxster DynAudio vs. Mercedes SL500 Focal K2s

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had the DynAudio Speakers in my 2005 Porsche Boxster with a JL amp and Pioneer head, and there was no comparison to the Focal K2 Power 165 KR2s. Put the Focal K2 Power 165KR2's in a 2005 Mercedes SL500 with the same JL amp and same Pioneer head, and the Focal K2s just don't compare to the DynAudio sound quality. I thought I could save some money with the Focals over the DynAudios (although both were expensive), but was a bit disappointed with the K2s after the install. The Focal K2s take a little getting use to because the sound seems kind of "in your face". K2s have plenty of power, very low distortion, tweeters are excellent, but unless you have the EQ really dialed in for each song recording, you can find some missing sound ingredients. Guess I really just got spoiled with the DynAudio speakers. Haven't found anything as good as the DynAudio for rich sound from low to mid to high. Focal K2s are pretty good, but I'll spend a little more next time and get the Dyns.

Pros: Good sound quality, great tweeters, handle power well

Cons: Missing some low end and middle sound quality, kind of "in your face" sound

Another great Focal Component set

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been out of car audio for a few years, so when I came back I was pleased to see that Focal was still producing great speakers. These are similar to the speakers I used to run, and sound great. Their quality is still great and you'll see that the second you open the box. Well packaged, complete kit and the speakers scream quality.

Pros: Great quality, great sound, plenty of adjustability through the crossover and tweeter mounting options

Cons: A little pricey, but you won't regret buying them.

Upgraded my flax components with these components

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Impressive speakers. It's amazing how much more detailed the k series were in comparison to the flax. As much as I enjoyed the flax components, these components are way superior in my personal opinion.

Pros: Substantial savings if able to ow willing to purchase as open box or scratch and dent.

Cons: Considering how much is being spent it would be nice if the included terminal connectors or even speaker wire

Simply Amazing !!

These are simply the most amazing speakers that you can buy. I hear things in music that I have never heard before even in songs that I have listened to for years. The clearing and depth is unmatched. FOCAL is the best you can buy.

Pros: Everything

Cons: Cost is a bit steep but look around and you can find some deals.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I actually ended up returning the whole system as I was not satisfied by the sound quality and performance output. Because there are so many other components and factors, I am not sure of these speakers was the major contributing factor to the failure or not. So I am not sure what "star" rating to give it. It could have been many other things. I researched and tuned the system for a full week. Even though I spent a lot of money thinking I would get an extremely great sounding audio system, It actually did not sound all that much better than the factory bose system. At least not for what I paid. The woofers were capable of lots of low bass and very bright mid bass. They did not go as loud as I thought they would before distortion however. The tweeters were very loud, I had to turn them down to the -6 setting on the crossover as they were a bit over powering.

Pros: Seems very well built. Crutchfield's customer support is very helpful.

Cons:

Worth the extra $$$ over the KR 1

aztekk from Tucson, AZ on 11/26/2011

If you are in the market for some Focal components, and were thinking about saving some money by purchasing the 165 KR one, stop right now. After hearing both of these at the local shop, there is absolutely NO reason to save the extra money on the KR one, because these sound alot better. It was no contest, all it took was one switch from the 1 to the KR2 to realize that the midbass cone on the 2 is far superior (The two sets sport the exact same tweeter). It wasnt that it produced more bass, it was that the mid was far more clear, rendering voices much better than the KR 1. I was surprised, this set actually makes the 165 1 sound almost bad. If you are fortunate enough to be able to purchase the KR 1, you can probably save up $200 more to spend on this far superior set.

Cons:

Outstanding

Anonymous from VA on 11/21/2009

I have these installed in an 02 silverado running off a RF t-400-2 amp with a kenwood kvt-614 head unit. I was very reluctant to spend the money on these as they are very high priced. After I got them in I have no regrets. These speakers can get loud to the point of pain and not distort. I agree with previous reviews that they are bright at first if your not used to this level of sound quality but the crossovers are adjustable to your preference. Full door dynamat is a must considering what you spend on these speakers. If you want the best you got to pay for the best and these are by far the best.

The Best of the Best

2fast4thelaw from Denver on 7/24/2009

Hands down, these components are about as good as it gets. Everything else on the sound board sounds like its playing through a pillow in comparison. These speakers have incredible midrange clarity and tight bass punch. The only set I compared that came close was a polyglass 3-way component set. I still feel these edged out a bit. People complain that these speakers are bright. Thats because they didnt realize what they were missing. Plus after break in they tame down a little and yes they may be bright, but not harsh. You will here details in your music you never have had heard before. The build quality is very apparent looking at the crossovers and its evident that cost was no object in making these speakers but you get what you pay for and these are no exception.

Woofer

K2 Cone: The woofer cone is a sandwich composite consisting of a foam core, a structural glass fiber bottom layer, and a Kevlar top layer. This combination of materials results in a rigid, light weight cone with excellent damping characteristics.

Surround: The butyl rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped aluminum phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Zamak Basket: The woofer features a cast Zamak basket. Zamak is a rigid alloy of Zinc, Aluminum, Magnesium, and Copper. Zamak is non-magnetic.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1-1/4" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.

Tweeter

Inverted Dome Tweeter: The tweeter is an inverted Kevlar dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions.

Mounting Options: The tweeter can be surface or flush mounted using the included adapters. Focal recommends flush mounting, but the included angled cup allows surface mounting at one of two angles; approximately 15° and approximately 40°.

Crossover

Components: Focal uses audiophile grade polypropylene capacitors and air core inductors to ensure high definition and a dynamic sound quality.

Tweeter Level: You can adjust the output level of the tweeter on the crossover to -6 dB, -3 dB, or 0 dB.

Midrange Level: Set the midrange output to High or Flat to match their position in the car. When the mids are installed low in the door, some of the output is absorbed by the upholstery and they benefit from the High output setting.

Crossover Slopes: The crossover uses 3rd order, 18 dB per octave low-pass and high-pass filters. The crossover frequency for both is 3,800 Hz.

Wiring: The inputs and outputs are screw terminals; they will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.315" wide.

Why did you buy this?

I prefer clarity, depth, and detail over brute force and I enjoy a wide range of musical styles.[ Joseph  Jul 04, 2017 ]
Focal comes highly recommended and I already own a set.[ David  Feb 05, 2017 ]
I hear these speakers are wonderful.[ Gerald  May 01, 2016 ]

2 questions already asked

I hope this is a troll question. wouldnt make any sense pitting soundquality speakers in the back to drowned out by the sub and have cheap speakers in the front. the tweeters also wouldnt be facing towards your ear so your losing alot of sound, having them on the rear deck. but to simply answer your question they will sound great even if you mounted them on the outside of your car[ Colin  Jul 21, 2017 ]
Think about your car as a concert stage or a group of musicians playing in front of you. At a performance you are not surrounded by the musicians. You should put the Focal K2's up front and the sub woofer where it will fit, save your money on the kickers. Never mix good with not so good , like taking a not so good drink and mixing it with a great drink, you only make a great thing not so good[ Jay Stump  Jul 20, 2017 ]
The better speakers always go to create the front stage. These Focal are leagues above anything Kicker produces. And have the focal tweeters mounted near the A pillar base, not in the kick panel or door bottom.[ Nripendra  Jul 20, 2017 ]
These are high-end speakers and should not be wasted in a deck. You want these up front where they're superior sound quality can be heard. If you want rear fill, you can toss some cheap speakers in the back.[ Jason  Jul 20, 2017 ]
I recommend placing kr2's on front. Does not make sense to place your superior speakers in the rear. You will hear basically The kickers in front only and will overshadow the kr2's[ Leslie  Jul 20, 2017 ]
I wouldn't you always want your better mids and highs in front[ rafael  Jul 19, 2017 ]
I have had the focal polyglass, K2, and KR2 components, and they all produce high quality sound no matter what type of music you listen to. I do find that you want to put your best speakers up front because the cheaper ones will just drown out the good speakers. Maybe try using the KR2's up front and a subwoofer in the rear. You could probably get away with mounting everything in the rear deck also. Make sure you have a quality amp for the mids and highs![ Kyle  Jul 19, 2017 ]
No. The better speakers should be in front of you. Rear speakers are just for fill. Move the Kicker speakers to the rear and put these in the front.[ Jeff  Jul 19, 2017 ]
good afternoon i had the K2's installed in the door with a sub in the trunk. The tweeter was mounted at eye level next to the windshield. I think you would really want the tweeter forward for excellent staging. I have no speakers in the rear deck; there is no need. There is plenty of volume. These are my second pair of K2's because they are amazing.[ robert  Jul 19, 2017 ]
You could install that setup, but I would install the Focal's in the front, and the Kicker's in the rear deck. Most of your soundstage will come from the front speakers and it's better to have the Focal's for this purpose. I installed the Focal K2 Power's in the front doors of my truck (4 door, crew cab), and a set of less expensive Focal coaxial speakers in the rear doors, and the combination sounds great. Just make sure to buy an amp that can send a clean signal to the Focal's. I purchased a Focal 4 channel, and Focal 2 channel amps to run these speakers after talking with the Crutchfield sales staff. I've been very happen with the recommendation and performance of the system.[ JAMES T  Jul 19, 2017 ]
Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.[ Kenny  May 08, 2017 ]  Staff
