Focal and My Ferrari
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
If you have an older Ferrari (mine is a 1988 328GTB) you know that the factory speakers in the doors eventually disintegrate. Mine were no different. Took my door panels off and saw that the 5.25 inch fit in the speaker wells and only needed 2 extra holes drilled on the mounting rim. Tweeters needed a little more work as I took the OEM tweeters out and modified the opening using a drill. Mounting of the Focal tweeters in the supplied metal cup-type surround was done with epoxy. Hooked everything up to a new Alpine HD149BT. Wow. Yes I love that Italian V8 sound but the Focal speakers are excellent. The shallower Focal 130 VRS were a perfect fit in the faiirly shallow doors. At home I listen to Italian Sonus Faber Amati's driven by a McIntosh tube amp. The Focals are silky with vocals and nicely focused with instruments. The supplied crossovers also make a huge difference as well. In the past I didn't care about car audio very much but now have experienced Focal and they are terrific. Am only awarding 4 stars since I had to do a little bit of drill work to mount the door speakers. The mounts were exactly 90 degrees apart but the existing holes in the door needed 2 holes drilled in the enclosure area. Pretty easy but perhaps the speaker support rim could have had multiple holes ready to use. A very small issue. Overall the speakers are very very satisfying and worth the investment.
Pros: Sound quality was surprising and quite impressive.
Cons: Wish the 5.25 speakers had a rim so that the 4 mounting screws could be placed anywhere around the rim instead of only using 4 holes at 90 degree angles to each other. This is a tiny issue.
