Our take on the Focal Integration ISS 690

Focal applies the same technology they use in their studio and audiophile-grade home systems to their Integration line of car speakers. The Integration ISS 690 component system includes 6"x9" woofers with cones made from Polyglass, a material that combines the warm sound of cellulose with the strength of glass, so they'll play accurately with no added resonances.

Focal ISS 690 6X9" 2 way Component Speakers

You can use this angled tweeter mount to improve high-frequency dispersion in problem vehicles.

Audiophile-grade engineering

Focal applies the same technology they use in their studio and audiophile-grade home systems to their Integration line of car speakers. The Integration ISS 690 component system includes 6"x9" woofers with cones made from Polyglass, a material that combines the warm sound of cellulose with the strength of glass, so they'll play accurately with no added resonances.

Adjustable tweeter

Each separate Integration processed aluminum inverted dome tweeter features a built-in phase plug and wave guide, which act together to increase the power of high-frequency notes and improve the stereo soundstage. Focal includes a low-profile surface mount and an angled mount so you can set up the tweeter for the best possible imaging in your vehicle.

Built-in crossover networks

The crossover networks are built-in, so you don't have those extra boxes to install. Low-profile Integration speakers allow you to put Focal sound quality and construction into your vehicle, so you can enjoy a dramatic jump in performance over your old speakers. Grilles are not included; factory grilles are appropriate for most installations.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

2014 Ford F-150 Lariat
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in my 2017 Ford SD with OE Sony Audio. After talking directly with Focal, I found that the OE system is crossed over at the amp and the supplied inline crossovers should not be used as they would produce holes in the frequency response. After googling F150 door panel removal, (there were no 17+ SD videos yet and the SD now shares a cab with the 15+ F150) I was able to quickly and easily install these speakers. The tweeters in the A-pillars were just as painless but did require fabricating a strap to hold them in place. After installation I was very satisfied with the results. They were not overly bright in my application as other reviews have observed in different vehicles and matched the OE crossover points nicely. I also replaced the rears and center channel. The rear channels of the SD have their highs crossed out to make them rear fill so I would recommend skipping upgrading them. I did and the sound of the replacements sounded identical to the OE speakers. The center channel did make a big difference though. The only issue there is the OE center is 8 Ohms so the 4 Ohm replacement will play a bit louder. I found that adjusting the balance right and rearward a bit calmed it down a bit and it now blends perfectly. I used the Kicker 43CSC354 and sold the second on eBay. For the sub driver, I replaced the OE with the Pioneer TS-SW2002D2 wired in series and mounted with an 3/4" spacer. I used an older JL Slash 250/1V2. After break in, it was a great upgrade as well.

My 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T was sounding pretty bad with the bose speakers the factory put in so I check Crutchfield and they had everything I needed to get my system rocking again, and very affordable.

Pros: Evrything was easy to put in just take your time and do research.

Cons: Not even one bad thing

Great Sound

Modified Driver from Webster, New York on 11/13/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this component set in my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, earlier this week. I was replacing the speakers that were standard equipment with the "base" 6 speaker set-up. Yes, as a number of folks have mentioned, the Focal tweeters are a little bright, but in many cases, you're comparing them to the marginal OE tweeters. However, as they reproduce the upper sound frequencies more clearly, that's to be somewhat expected. I prefer to describe them as "more detailed". While the OE speakers surprisingly provided a fair amount of bass, it was rather "muddy". The Focal mid/woofers again, are much clearer. My only criticism, is the really limited instructions that come with the speakers. I've been installing aftermarket speakers and amps in my cars for close to 30 years, so I certainly know the basics. However, in the case of this particular component set, the cross-overs are "inline", and I really don't know how the Focal people expect you to wire them in. There isn't any secondary wire tap on the mid/woofer, to draw a signal from, assuming the vehicle's wiring harness was feeding a full range signal to that speaker, and in the case of my Jeep, the OE harness already had a feed to the tweeters. Unfortunately, there isn't a "plug and play" adapter available, to hook the tweeters to the harness, so I had to cut the OE tweeter's power wires, and splice it to the Focal tweets. I did not use the Focal crossover.

Pros: Good, well detailed sound. I've heard it takes speakers several hours to "break-in", so I'm anticipating even better sounds in the future. I probably would have given them 5 stars, if there was more install/technical information provided. Even though I'm pretty happy with their sound, I still am wondering, in the back of my head, if using the cross-overs would have made any difference. I have no back up information to tell me that they either were or weren't necessary.

Cons: They're a bit "pricey", and the instructions are vague and pretty much non-existent. The installation instructions, provided in the box, are little more than a few pictograms, demonstrating how to screw the speakers to the door panels in the car. I'd hate to be someone installing these speakers as their first time experience with an aftermarket install.

Big Diffrence!

Focal Sound is superb and really made a huge difference in a factory System. I could not have acomplished this without the support from Crutchfield as these component Speakers require proper installation of which Crutchfield guided me the whole way via multiple phone calls.

Pros: Excellent Sound,

Cons: Tweeters way bright, Gotta use the crossover.

Need an active crossover.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had Polyglass and Access in other vehicles before so I knew going in how bright the tweeters were. However, before I always had the top of the line pioneer deck feeding mmats and JL amps so I could tone them down and loved them. If you have a factory DSP and cannot replace the head unit (pretty much all newer mid to high end vehicles are like this) then you either need to cleansweep into outboard amps or piggyback the DSP and calm these things down. They will seriously scream at you. For this price I should have went with CDT CL 6x9 components. Their silk tweeters are never too bright and their volume/SQ is better. 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee 10 speaker setup with Focal Audio front, Polk DXI every other location, JL JX 500/1d amp and JL Stealthbox 10w3v3

Pros: -The sound quality is to be expected, great -The efficiency makes them stand out above all the other OEM speakers in your ride instantly.

Cons: -EXTREMELY bright -Cost

Excellent Upgrade in 15 Jeep GC

Knobstr from Virginia on 8/26/2015

2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have the 15 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 8.4A stereo and 6 speakers (not Alpine). Everything sounded flat and at low volume muffled; adjusting the built in equalizer made little difference.. Installed these up front and WOW what a difference. Better base, mids and highs. The range of adjustment with the equalizer is easily 4 times what it was with the stock speakers. Play the volume low as background and the music is very clear. Play it loud and it's perfectly balanced and crystal clear ... can really bring on the base too if you want. If you're thinking of upgrading, start with these speakers first. You'll find like I did that there is no need for an amp or processor. I just ordered the Focal Integration ISC 165s to upgrade the rear. My total upgrade will run just under 500 bucks ... worth every nickel.

Pros: Good directions Awesome sound Perfect fit

Cons: Does not come with a free set of Titleist AP1 irons

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these into a stock alpine based system in my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. At first they sounded way to bright. I went back in and installed the supplied inline crossovers and things were way better. After driving across the country with these things installed I think I can say that I made the right decision, especially after they broke in a bit. They were worth the cost.

Mark from Virginia on 6/5/2015

Just installed these and very, very disappointed. Not sure if it's the integrated crossover or the woofer itself, but the sound is horrible. Worse then my stock speakers. The tweet on the other hand adds much to the factory, so the tweeters are great. Returning for something else.

Pros: great tweets

Cons: horrible woofers

Nice Set

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well, I was a bit worried at first spending the extra money on this set, but I have to say the quality is a nice improvement. I wanted a new set of speakers to replace the ones in my new Jeep GC as they would sound distorted at high volumes. These fixed that problem, and honestly are even louder than the stock ones due to their DB specs. My only complaint is the tweeters are a bit "Bright" on certain songs. It actually hurts at times. Some folks would say the Silk dome tweeters are a bitter fit to avoid this issue. But the music is crisp and clear. I can only imagine how much better these would sound with a better signal and amp hooked up to the factory setup. For those who have the Jeep GC (mine was a '15), these fit right in. Tweeters need a small shape up to fit into stock location but easily done with dremel tool or sand paper. Stock can be fit back in if you change your mind.

Pros: Crisp and Clear, Loud, Quality.

Cons: Tweeters are to bright with factory adjustment, Price.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in the front doors of my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I was a little concerned the stock head unit wouldn't have enough power to make a difference over stock speakers. The difference was huge! Not only is the sound quality greatly improved, putting out deeper bass and detailed crisp highs, they also play louder and clearer. The stock speakers required bass and treble controls to be set at max for best sound (which wasn't great). With the Focal ISS 690's the controls are set flat at 0 and sound fantastic. If I decide to add an amp, these speakers should handle it and probably sound even more amazing.

Pros: Great sound with stock head unit!

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in a 2014 Durango (minor filing needed behind tweeter, then front fits A-pillar perfectly). These Focal speakers are a cut above most other brands I have used (Alpine Type-R, Infinity Reference, Polk db, JBL GTO, JL C2). The tweeters are amazing with no harshness at all.

Pros: Excellent sound quality. Great fit in the Durango (same A-pillar as Grand Cherokee).

Cons: Makes me want to spend more on Focal stuff.

NIce speakers, but not for me!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 2 sets of these speakers. I installed it at first only on drivers side. Moved fader just to the front speakers. This way I tested difference between OEM speaker (right side) and Focal by switching balance left and right. First impression was Wow!, what a difference! But, during 15 min of playing various songs I realized that tweeters are way to saturated for my taste. I just couldn't handle it anymore. They even became harsh on my ears. Switching back to the OEM speaker was kind of a relief. Even after playing with EQ setings I wasn't happy. You can adjust custom settings to be ok (if you head unit has those settings), but all the presets by manufacturer: jazz, hip hop, rock, etc are not usable because tweeters are so dominant in this combo. For the money, I'll rather buy one set of speakers which sounds good instead of this option. My main reference song is "Red Rain" from album "So" by Peter Gabriel. This album was so perfectly produced that it has been a reference for sound check ever since. You can really evaluate the whole spectrum with this material.

Pros: Nice set, fits perfect, solid bass, cool price.

Cons: Tweeters too dominant and harsh.

Focal Integration ISS 690

s.e.o. from VA on 7/29/2014

Installed in front doors of a 2005 Toyota 4-Runner (non-JBL). Running off a Pioneer AVH-P3100DVD Head Unit (4 x 14w RMS). Still running stock rear door speakers. No amp. Had custom brackets fabricated for the 6x9 with foam rims to align with the stock foam on the door panel. Also went with inner & outer sound deadening on the front doors. These speakers are incredible, even with only 14w RMS pushing them they have incredible response down to about 50hz, really suprised how much punch they have in the 50-100hz ranges and that's just running on a head unit. Highly, highly reocmmend sound deadening and getting the tightest seal as humanly possible with the speaker enclosure in the doors, this is likely why they respond so well in lower frequencies only driven from the head unit. For lower volumes, more power is needed. I will be adding an amp soon. At low volumes, high end is weak without more power. I'll likely be adding an amp that can run at least 70w to each of these speakers. Crystal clear throughout all the spectrum and stable. Mid range is a bit "nasaly" and requires some EQ attention in the 200hz-1k range (could just be my head unit). Also tweets are very sensitive in the 16k+ range and require some EQ to eliminate pristine clarity on hi-hat riding. Again, could just be my head unit and resolve with more power to flatten out the source. Lots of data points, now just my personal opinion. These speakers ROCK. Compared them heads up to JL, Alpine ...

Pros: ... Kenwood, Pioneer coax 6x9s and these were in another league. Hertz was similar, but had no component offering in 6x9. I refused to go with a 6.5" component because the 6x9 woofer just dominates the 6.5" in mid to mid-low output. The Pros: Crystal Clear, Highly Sensitive, Runs Great with Head Unit Only (look into properly sealing w/ sound deadening), Excellent Bass, Tight Response in Mid-Lows (I was hearing kick drum precision that I didn't even know existed).

Cons: Not really a con but likely requires amplification to open up the 10k Hz+ ranges at lower volumes. Again, not really a con and is solved with EQ and amplification - mid range seems to be the power house on the woofers.

2007 Toyota 4Runner
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall a great speaker. If you have a toyota with stock 6x9 speakers in the front, consider these. Whatever you do, DO NOT use the junk flat speaker adapters that Crutchfield and others try to provide. This will rob you of speaker depth, bass response, mid-bass and clarity. It is VERY easy to re-use the stock speaker brackets of your toyota or purchase brackets that are ~1.5" in depth and are made for your car. You can either drop in 6x9 speakers (these fit with no mods to doors or anything else) or you can use a 6x9 to 6.5 adapter that will mount right on to your factory 6x9 brackets. Point is, when you're told these won't fit, or you need shallow mount speakers, don't believe it and don't do it. Ok, that out of the way, these are indeed excellent speakers. I believe they would run fine even on an aftermarket head unit and no amp. But, a small amp would be even better. The highs are fantastic. Flat EQ, they sound great. The bass is good. Mid-bass and mid-range is good, to a point. I found these couldn't quite handle the power and volume I was trying to play. They were 90% there, but not quite. With 200 watts and at louder volumes, the mid-range and mid-bass got a little muddy. Also, don't believe the 6x9s don't sound good cause they are oval. Myth. If you get junk 6x9's then yes. But a quality 6x9 will sound great and compete with any 6.5" in its price range for clarity and will likely win for bass/mid-bass. 6.5 speakers only give you more options.

Pros: Crystal clear speakers, great bass, great tweeters. Would work well even with aftermarket head unit power and really will with 50 watts and up. I would put the bass of these speakers over any 6.5" in this price range, and the mid-range clarity is excellent as long as you're not trying to have a full blown heavy metal concert in your car. These are meant for factory fit replacement of your 6x9 front speaker cars and they are great for that.

Cons: Ran out of words available to me above. The only real con is for me at least is I wish they would handle a little more power. But this is only a con to me, I wanted really really loud speakers that could take up to 200 watts each. For most everyone out there these are fantastic and you won't find any faults.

Polyglass Cone: The woofer cone has a cellulose pulp base and is coated with a uniform deposit of hollow glass microballs. The addition of the Polyglass layer significantly increases the cone's rigidity without adding much weight. This combination takes advantage of the accuracy and neutrality of the hard outer surface, but maintains the superior damping characteristics of the cellulose pulp.

Surround: The butyl rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.

Crossovers: The included 7" woofer wires have integrated crossovers. The woofer ends of the wires have female quick-slides that easily connect to the woofer terminals.

Inverted Dome Tweeter: The tweeter is an inverted aluminum dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions.

Mounting Options: The tweeters include two types of surface mount housings, one low profile and one angled:

Flush Mount Low Profile Surface Mount Angled Surface Mount
Mounting Height 0.3" 0.894" 1.933"
Mounting Depth 0.55" 0.875" (screw depth) 0.875" (screw depth)
Frame Diameter 1.871" 1.88" N/A
Cutout Diameter 1.67" N/A N/A
Width N/A N/A 1.895"
Surface Depth N/A N/A 2.839"

Crossovers: The included 19" tweeter wires have integrated crossovers. The tweeter ends of the wires have quick-slide terminals that easily connect to the wires soldered to the tweeters. The input end of each wire has three leads, a negative and two positives. The positive leads are labeled Car and Display, with a lower output level from the Car lead (useful because the placement of the woofer in a typical car installation requires the tweeter output be lowered to maintain a balanced sound).

Changed everything. The factory speakers were lifeless and lacked midrange and highs. The Focals fixed that and took the sound to a whole new level. [ TROY  Feb 06, 2017 ]
I'm very pleased with them. They do need a few hours of time on them to "break-in", before really sounding good, but overall, I found them to be an excellent upgrade to my Jeep's OE sound system. It's important, however, to use the Focal inline x-overs, for both the tweeters, as well as the mid-woofers. One other thing, while some people like to call the Focal tweeters overly "bright", I prefer to call them "detailed".... [ L  Feb 05, 2017 ]
Much improvement over stock speakers! Bass is deeper and the music/ lyrics clearer! [ MICHAEL  Feb 05, 2017 ]
The speaker kit does come with x overs. One for each channel. No frequencies are lost. Just directed to the appropriate driver [ jim  Apr 19, 2016 ]
Unfortunately, the Focal instructions are quite vague, and don't mention any crossover frequencies at all. Secondly, the one thing that REALLY puzzles me, is the "woofers" have power terminals, which, of course, accept the power input from the car's wiring harness. However, there's no real place to connect the tweeter wiring to, as there would be, if the crossover was an active one. So I never did understand how/where Focal expected you, the user/installer, to connect the tweeters' power wires/crossover to. It appears that they assumed that you'd somehow "jumper" or splice the wiring in. Therefore, I assumed, correctly or not, that the vehicle's head unit was already performing the function of a crossover, since the car's wiring harness had separate feeds for the "woofer" and the tweeter. I used the available adapters to connect the Focal woofers to the car's wiring harness, and as much as I don't like to cut OE wiring harnesses, I did cut the tweeter leads, and installed male/female "plugs" on the tweeter wires. On the head units settings, I run the tweeter level "flat", with some gain on the bass level. [ L  Apr 19, 2016 ]
