Focal Performance PS 165
6-3/4" component speaker system
Our take on the Focal Performance PS 165 by Crutchfield's Buck Pomerantz
If you're looking for more than just replacement speakers, Focal's Performance Series speakers let the music speak for itself, providing transparent reproduction for all your recordings and listening pleasures. The PS 165 6-3/4" component system uses a lightweight, exceptionally rigid Polyglass cone in a sturdy frame to create accurate, richly-textured sound, whether played loud or soft.
Focal brought some of their high-fidelity technology out of the studio and into your car with the Performance inverted dome tweeters. This technology results in wider dispersion and a higher frequency response, so you'll notice greater detail in the instruments and voices. Each tweeter features a built-in phase plug and wave guide, which act together to increase the power of high-frequency notes and improve the stereo soundstage.
Cool crossover network
Superior fidelity used to involve a bulky crossover network that was hard to install. Focal designed this Performance crossover network as two separate pieces, joined together when you take it out of the box. If space is an issue in your vehicle, you take them apart, then mount the high-pass crossover near the tweeter and the low-pass near the woofer, instead of having to mount one big crossover. You can also adjust the tweeter level and crossover point.
Technology that sounds like magic
Focal applies molten glass microballs onto cellulose pulp to create their Polyglass cones, combining the crisp response of the rigid glass layer with the warm sound of a paper cone. The aluminum tweeter has been similarly treated with a softer, more easily damped material that makes the treble distinct without sounding harsh. You can expect superior performance from these component speakers, whether you power them with a quality outboard amp or your car stereo.
Note: Focal describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake, we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.
Great speakers. These speakers are a good bang for your money. Buyers make sure you read before purchasing these speakers as you do need to get it install by professional or know how to build custom mount for them.

Polyglass Cone: The woofer cone has a cellulose pulp base and is coated with a uniform deposit of hollow glass microballs. The addition of the Polyglass layer significantly increases the cone's rigidity without adding much weight. This combination takes advantage of the accuracy and neutrality of the hard outer surface, but maintains the superior damping characteristics of the cellulose pulp.
Surround: The butyl rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.
Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.
Aluminum Basket: The woofer features a non-magnetic cast aluminum basket.
Inverted Dome Tweeter: The tweeter is an inverted aluminum dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions.
Mounting Options: The tweeters include two types of surface mount housings, one low profile and one angled:
|Flush Mount||Low Profile Surface Mount||Angled Surface Mount|
|Mounting Depth||0.511"||0.875" (screw depth)||0.875" (screw depth)|
Crossovers: Individual crossovers are included for each woofer and each tweeter. The crossovers can be mounted separately, docked in pairs, or all four crossovers docked together and mounted as one unit. The crossover inputs and outputs are screw terminals and will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.31" wide. Because the woofer and tweeter crossovers are separate, and have separate inputs, the system can be bi-amped. The woofer crossover point is 3.5 kHz, all the crossover slopes are 6 dB/octave, and the tweeter crossovers offer two adjustments:
- Tweeter Attenuation: set the tweeter output to -3dB, -6dB, or 0dB (no attenuation)
- Tweeter Crossover Point: the tweeter crossovers also offer three crossover point options; 4 kHz, 4.5 kHz, and 5 kHz
- Length: 4"
- Height: 1-1/4"
- Individual: 2"
- Pair: 4"
- All four: 8"

I believe so. I was thinking of bi-amping these when I purchased them but didnt end up doing so. I researched it through a few of the online car audio forums and saw a few posts stating it could be done. I dont know firsthand but the research said yes. I hope this helps. [ JASON Jan 07, 2014 ]
Yes. I'm running a jl audio xd400x4 to the set. Rear 2 ways off the deck. [ JESSE Jan 07, 2014 ]
Yes these are bi-ampable use the front 2 channels on amp for mids and other for highs!! I don't have the speakers bi-amped any they sound amazing! Justin L [ JUSTIN Jan 07, 2014 ]
Yes, just installed these this past weekend. Although I didn't bi-amp myself it is definitely possible. You have two separate crossovers for each set (woofer/tweeter). If you don't bi-amp you actually have to wire a jumper between the two crossovers in order to get signal to the tweeters. Bi-amping is simple with these. Each of your 4 lines would go into a crossover (either woofer or tweeter) and on to the speaker itself. If you look close at the picture it shows the two crossovers. The one with the copper coils is for the woofer and the other one with the switches is for the tweeter. Love them so far but still need to fine tune. They will handle a good amount of power but just haven't pushed them yet. Hope this helps! [ STEVE Jan 07, 2014 ]
