If you're looking for more than just replacement speakers, Focal's Performance Series speakers let the music speak for itself, providing transparent reproduction for all your recordings and listening pleasures. The PS 165 6-3/4" component system uses a lightweight, exceptionally rigid Polyglass cone in a sturdy frame to create accurate, richly-textured sound, whether played loud or soft.

Advanced tweeter
Focal brought some of their high-fidelity technology out of the studio and into your car with the Performance inverted dome tweeters. This technology results in wider dispersion and a higher frequency response, so you'll notice greater detail in the instruments and voices. Each tweeter features a built-in phase plug and wave guide, which act together to increase the power of high-frequency notes and improve the stereo soundstage.

Cool crossover network
Superior fidelity used to involve a bulky crossover network that was hard to install. Focal designed this Performance crossover network as two separate pieces, joined together when you take it out of the box. If space is an issue in your vehicle, you take them apart, then mount the high-pass crossover near the tweeter and the low-pass near the woofer, instead of having to mount one big crossover. You can also adjust the tweeter level and crossover point.

Technology that sounds like magic
Focal applies molten glass microballs onto cellulose pulp to create their Polyglass cones, combining the crisp response of the rigid glass layer with the warm sound of a paper cone. The aluminum tweeter has been similarly treated with a softer, more easily damped material that makes the treble distinct without sounding harsh. You can expect superior performance from these component speakers, whether you power them with a quality outboard amp or your car stereo.

Note: Focal describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake, we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.

Great speakers, have them running on a nice double din poineer head and a 100W amp. They definitely jam! My only complaint with them is the price. I had the Alpine type R 6.5" component set for less and thought they sounded every bit as good from low to mid frequencies and even give a slight edge to Alpine at the high frequencies. None the less they are an amazing speaker set but my advise is save the money and get the Alpine SPR60C. It did outperform Alpine at the low end frequencies for those without a sub but since I have a sub this was a non-issue for me. 5 star sound but I'd say they have a 4 star value for the price Thanks for reading.

Pros: Sound amazing, great low f response for those without a sub, very full mids, clean sound with almost zero distortion at even high volumes.

Cons: They may be over priced based on comparison to Alpine SPR60C.

Great speakers. These speakers are a good bang for your money. Buyers make sure you read before purchasing these speakers as you do need to get it install by professional or know how to build custom mount for them.

Pros: Great quality sounds on mids and highs.

Cons: Speakers size is uncommon so installation can be difficult if you don't have the right tools. But good thing I did have the right tools for building a custom mount bracket for the speakers to fit the doors.

Great speakers

Amazing speakers no complaints at all Worth the money

Pros: Great highs good lows again no complaints

Cons: They are a little bit of a pain to install because of the boxes that go to the speakers

I put these component speakers in my infiniti G-35. It was a little tricky to put them in, but with the master sheet from Crutchfield and some YouTube videos I figured it out. The fit was pretty dang good and it looks really clean. I was going from the stock Bose system, so didn't expect too much improvement. I also installed the RF Power T400-4 to run them. I am blown away!! Best car speakers I've ever had. Kinda wonder what the K2's and Utopias sound like!

Pros: They look really good, sound great, were affordable compared to other focals.

Cons: None yet, I'm converted to Focal.

Amazing clarity

Ray ATX from Austin TX on 12/1/2013

Got these for Black Friday weekend deal. Replaced Kenwood 5x7s had to make a bracket but after all installed its like a new system. Sound is amazing, clear and loud! Run off head unit or amp you wont find a bettet set! I have a Kenwood head unit, these up front, kenwood 5x7 rear, 2 kenwood 12s, rf prime 500.1, kenwood 4 channel amp, 2 farad cap all in a convertible sound is amazing even with top down at 75mph!

Pros: Focal makes some of the best speakers Clear highs Nice mids and bass

Cons: Don't like the twin crossover why not make it one Also price is high but worth it

Pure sound, no comparison, no BS

Abraham Z. from Kyle, TX on 10/7/2013

I've had these in my WRX for a couple of months powered by a Kenwood head unit. They sound better than stock speakers but sound a little limited. I just recently powered them up with a 4 channel amp @100w x 4 (bi-amp'd them). What a difference that made! All my music sounds 200% better than before. I've had many brands of components in the past 15 years, at all price ranges and none of them compare to Focal. Money truly well spent.

Pros: Bi-amp capable, selectable crossover points and attenuation. Attention to musical detail.

Cons: Weird tweeter mounting options, user manual not very useful. Requires high powered amp to wake them up (not really a con).

Never thought I'd spend 400 on a set of speakers, but I'm glad I did! They rock! Great sound everywhere. No complaints.

Pros: Killer sound all ranges

Cons: the cover on the cross over keeps popping off on one unit

Focal makes no compromises

Drew from Chicago on 4/7/2013

I have been a fan of Focal speakers for many years. I veered away from this brand to try some other components and was left very disappointed. I decided to come back, but was on a limited budget. I decided to go with these as you can bi-amp them. I highly recommend purchasing these with a 4 channel amp. With these speakers bi-amped, they match the quality of their higher end polykevlar line. This is the first pair of speakers I have owned that have not given me any listening fatigue. I can listen to these all day and am in pure music bliss. Not a single note or detail is missed. The mid-bass is tight and accurate. (make sure to apply dynmat as needed) Buy these and bi-amp them now!

Pros: Incredible fidelity. Bi-amp capability. Sweet mid-bass. Smooth tweeters.

Cons: Could have a tad bit more midrange, but some slight tuning will probably fix that.

Awesome !!!

Jesus R from Pensacola, FL on 10/22/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome !!! These are without a doubt the best car speakers I ever heard. (I am driving them with 100 Watts RMS each). I was pleasantly surprised by the clarity and fidelity. The tweeters are crisp and clean and produce beautiful highs. I listen to many different genres of music: rock, classical, jazz, bolero, salsa, merengue, and raggaeton; no matter what I played or how loud I played them, these speakers showed no distortion whatsoever and passed with flying colors. The clarity of the mid bass driver is beyond description. Playing songs that I have known for 20 years was as if I was listening to them for the first time. The reproduction of the voice is so accurate that is almost eerie. Sounded like the singers was standing next to me. Yes, they are a little expensive, but if you are serious about entering a different level of quality of sound save your money and get some Focal speakers, you will not be disappointed. My only regret is not getting the sooner. I will be ordering another pair for the rear deck of my car to complete the system.

live on stage

Clay from Atlanta on 9/17/2012

These speakers are definitely focal's "sweet spot" between performance and price. I found the lower end components to sound incredibly harsh compared to these. And while the higher end speakers definitely give you more bass, I thought their highs sounded muddier. Therefore, if you have a sub, the PS165s are the components to get. These speakers make all of my muzak sound as if it's live on stage in front of me. Feeding them 75 class D watts and setting the HPF to 80Hz, they sound as clear and as detailed as anything I could ever hope for--even while approaching unbearable volume levels. This set blends very well with the 10" sealed box I have in the trunk. They're not cheap, but if you can stretch your speaker budget or save up a bit longer, you'll be very very happy.

Pros: adjustable tweeter level to reduce brightness if necessary wide and enveloping soundstage accurate mid-bass blends well with a tight and punchy sub.

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are the cleanest sounding speakers I have ever heard. I built custom mounts out of MDF so I could fit these in my car and it was well worth the effort. I have them amplified by an Alpine F4. Low volume or high volume doesn't matter, they are just simply an outstanding speaker. I've tried many brands and hands down these are the best. You get what you pay for.

Pros: Build quality, looks, performance, value.

Cons: Speakers of this quality have no Cons.

focal ps165

kevinS from canton, oh on 2/29/2012

i just recently installed the focal ps165 in my silverado, i am powering them with a jl audio 110x2 channel amp with the kenwood kdc 396 head unit. I also had the doors dynamatted and the speakers baffled. The focal ps165 speaker is by far the best i have ever heard, even at very loud volume these speakers have no distortion and are the clearest things i have ever heard. the only other speaker i would think about is an upper line focal. They make listening to music enjoyable again. focal there is no substitute

Pros: amazing speaker nothing comes close to them

Cons: none

Polyglass Cone: The woofer cone has a cellulose pulp base and is coated with a uniform deposit of hollow glass microballs. The addition of the Polyglass layer significantly increases the cone's rigidity without adding much weight. This combination takes advantage of the accuracy and neutrality of the hard outer surface, but maintains the superior damping characteristics of the cellulose pulp.

Surround: The butyl rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Aluminum Basket: The woofer features a non-magnetic cast aluminum basket.

Inverted Dome Tweeter: The tweeter is an inverted aluminum dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions.

Mounting Options: The tweeters include two types of surface mount housings, one low profile and one angled:

Flush Mount Low Profile Surface Mount Angled Surface Mount
Mounting Height 0.292" 0.898" 1.948"
Mounting Depth 0.511" 0.875" (screw depth) 0.875" (screw depth)
Frame Diameter 1.886" N/A N/A
Cutout Diameter 1.677" N/A N/A
Width N/A 1.887" 1.894"
Surface Depth N/A 1.887" 2.865"

Crossovers: Individual crossovers are included for each woofer and each tweeter. The crossovers can be mounted separately, docked in pairs, or all four crossovers docked together and mounted as one unit. The crossover inputs and outputs are screw terminals and will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.31" wide. Because the woofer and tweeter crossovers are separate, and have separate inputs, the system can be bi-amped. The woofer crossover point is 3.5 kHz, all the crossover slopes are 6 dB/octave, and the tweeter crossovers offer two adjustments:

  • Tweeter Attenuation: set the tweeter output to -3dB, -6dB, or 0dB (no attenuation)
  • Tweeter Crossover Point: the tweeter crossovers also offer three crossover point options; 4 kHz, 4.5 kHz, and 5 kHz

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Length: 4"
  • Height: 1-1/4"
  • Width:
    • Individual: 2"
    • Pair: 4"
    • All four: 8"

I believe so. I was thinking of bi-amping these when I purchased them but didnt end up doing so. I researched it through a few of the online car audio forums and saw a few posts stating it could be done. I dont know firsthand but the research said yes. I hope this helps. [ JASON  Jan 07, 2014 ]
Yes. I'm running a jl audio xd400x4 to the set. Rear 2 ways off the deck. [ JESSE  Jan 07, 2014 ]
Yes these are bi-ampable use the front 2 channels on amp for mids and other for highs!! I don't have the speakers bi-amped any they sound amazing! Justin L [ JUSTIN  Jan 07, 2014 ]
Yes, just installed these this past weekend. Although I didn't bi-amp myself it is definitely possible. You have two separate crossovers for each set (woofer/tweeter). If you don't bi-amp you actually have to wire a jumper between the two crossovers in order to get signal to the tweeters. Bi-amping is simple with these. Each of your 4 lines would go into a crossover (either woofer or tweeter) and on to the speaker itself. If you look close at the picture it shows the two crossovers. The one with the copper coils is for the woofer and the other one with the switches is for the tweeter. Love them so far but still need to fine tune. They will handle a good amount of power but just haven't pushed them yet. Hope this helps! [ STEVE  Jan 07, 2014 ]
