Powerful sound from a speaker the size of a book

Impressive audio performance

Despite their tiny footprint and slim upright design, these speakers have the power to fill your medium-sized room with sound. They each feature a 4" Polyglass woofer and 3/4" aluminum dome tweeter to deliver detailed highs and surprisingly robust bass. Focal even points out that you can use the XS Book away from your desktop, too — like alongside your flat-panel TV for better sound from your movies and shows, or as a sweet-sounding bookshelf music system for playing tunes from your iPod® or smartphone.

Impressive Little Speakers

Adrian from Liberal, KS on 1/18/2015

I've had these for nearly a year and everyday i find myself being amazed by the sound they produce. It seems like they had a long burn in period. After about 4 months the low end opened up and i've heard frequencies as low as 40hz after positioning my desk in a corner and they've rattled my desk all the way down to 30hz. Of course its not the loudest bass and i would still recommend a subwoofer. Mids and highs sound very evenly blended as well. These are great for music and sound surprisingly large during explosions and action sequences in movies and games. I had the Bose Companion 20 before these and those were great speakers as well but these speakers seem more refined in the low end. The Bose play louder at max volume but lack low end completely when turned all the way up. Both speakers are great but I'd pick these any day over the Bose.

Pros: Good bass, mountable, stylish, loud.

Cons: LED light can be bright at night even while turned off.

Excellent and still impressed with each listening

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had these speakers about 3 months and have used them for a variety of music, volume levels, etc. and all I can say is they sound great. I listen to a variety of 256 and 320kb streaming music. I have a HRT MicroStreamer DAC connected to my USB, and from here to the speakers. The speakers sound excellent, and still full at low volumes when you want more of a background music. If you want to crank it up, at high volumes they hold together with no distortion and will make your ears ring. They bass, mid, and high are all there and sound great with probably more of an audiophile neutral profile. On occasions where I want to boost lows, mids or highs, I am able to satisfactorily make adjustments using the music player's graphic equalizer. I was wondering if upgrading from my old Bose speakers was going to be worth it. Turns out it was a very noticeable upgrade.

Pros: Sound great. Very happy with them.

Cons: None for me.

Manuel's Focal XS Book Speaker

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound that the speaker(s) produce, is great.

Pros: My favorite of the product is the sound, height, width and it watches my Lenovo.

Cons: My dissatisfaction is has the earphone connection only, it do not included the USB connection as well. Incase I am not able to connect to the earphone auxiliary.

Excellent sound but they are big

Esteban S. from New Orleans, LA on 10/19/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They are really good! I didn't expect such a deep base and full sound. They are definitely very powerful, they are big a lot bigger than Bose Companion 2 probably the size of Companion 20 but sound cannot be compared to either of this two sets of speakers. The XS sound much more clear and have a deeper bass.

Pros: Sound really good, Best computer speakers

Cons: No cons just take in consideration size when buying them

Versatile Product Offers Good Sound

Harold from Skokie, IL on 1/5/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose these powered speakers due to Focal's reputation for quality and because I needed a semi-portable solution to the problem of having good sound quality without buying another amplifier while keeping the wiring within reason. The form factor of these speakers allows me to place them on tabletops, countertops, or bookshelves. I am quite impressed with the sound produced by the 20 watts per channel amplifier, which is more than adequate to fill a bedroom, kitchen, or modest size living room. While no one would be fooled into thinking there's a subwoofer nearby, the bass that these speakers produce is ample for my needs. So far, I have attached these to an old Sony Discman, a Sony DVP S7000 DVD/CD player, and a Samsung portable Blu-Ray player. Regardless of source, the sound quality is satisfying. As stated in the product description, there is a pair of RCA plugs and a 3.5 mm. minijack for connections to hardware. A single cable, included with the set, is required to connect the two speakers. The silver finish appears to be susceptible to scratches. One of the speakers I received had a scratch along a back edge, but it's not visible from the front or sides. If you're considering spending much more on a similar product, I encourage you to give these speakers careful consideration. For the price, I'm happy with the speakers, and there's a two-year warranty.

Pros: Impressive sound quality, good value compared with competing products, pleasing appearance, and nice form factor

Cons: Silver finish appears to be susceptible to scratches, manual lacks any troubleshooting tips
