Nice, but could be better
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
They are nice, but I expected a little better engineering. I bought the optional cylinder locks: I would get these as they offer at least a little protection against theft. I have, two big pet peeves with the engineering. First they attach with a rubber strap that will dry out eventually and crack rendering them useless. I figured with a good name, like Thule, that they would have some kind of hard bracket on the bottoms that tightens against the roof rail. It's true that with the rubber strap that it is easier to get it to fit a lot of different sizes and shapes of roof bar but its still the easy way out from a design standpoint. A metal bracket would be stronger and more durable. It would stand up to weathering better and not have problems with UV breakdown like a polymer will. My second beef is that they are pretty large and clunky looking. They don't have to be as large as they are to fit a great variety of roof rails which I am sure don't go over 2" wide or 2" tall. That aside they are contoured nicely and the materials are pretty good quality with a good sturdy heavy mechanism inside.
Pros: Nice contours, good heavy mechanism inside.
Cons: Rubber straps are a bit cheesy and are prone to weathering breakdown. Design is a little on the large side giving it more of a clunky look than a very sleek well designed product look.
