Thule 887 XT
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I purchased the Thule Slipstream to replace a Yakima Bowdown. The Yakima was a great rack system and locked to the crossbars; I just could not lift the boat any further onto the roof due to pain. The Slipstream remedied this issue and allows me to load the kayak without too much exertion and it rolls up from pushing and guiding the boat. The assembly process is easy and the fit is great, but the system has its shortcomings. One, the whole carrier is put together and attaches to the crossbars using quick-release fasteners. I do not want to be on the water a few hours and come back to my vehicle and realize someone has stolen my real nice kayak carrier. I replaced 20 quick release fasteners with metric lock-nuts and loctite. I also purchased two security chain locks totaling $70. Unless someone cuts my crossbars off my car, the rack will be there when I need it. This is the reason for only 5 stars. The Yakima physically locked to the car, and Thule makes other racks with locks. A very big oversight IMO.
Pros: Ease of use, portability, quality workmanship
Cons: No theft protection and too many fasteners.
