Our take on the Boss 752UAB

Boss packs some pretty cool features into their 752UAB CD receiver. Not everyone gets their music from CDs, so they've included both front-panel and rear auxiliary inputs and a USB port. You can plug your favorite device into the aux in, or plug a thumb drive loaded with music into the USB port. You can even play music from select Android™ phones through the USB input (USB port not compatible with iPod® or iPhone®).

You've got options

Boss packs some pretty cool features into their 752UAB CD receiver. Not everyone gets their music from CDs, so they've included both front-panel and rear auxiliary inputs and a USB port. You can plug your favorite device into the aux in, or plug a thumb drive loaded with music into the USB port. You can even play music from select Android™ phones through the USB input (USB port not compatible with iPod® or iPhone®).

Fold down the front face and you can slide in your favorite CDs, even discs burned with MP3 files. And you'll also find an SD™ card slot behind the face too, so you can slip in a card loaded with MP3 files and enjoy the music whenever you want. Finding songs on your media is easy, thanks to an alphabetic directory search feature.

And Bluetooth® too

Boss sweetens the deal with built-in Bluetooth. You can answer a phone call with the push of a button, and talk as if your caller is sitting next to you, freeing up your hands and letting you concentrate on the drive. And the 752UAB supports Bluetooth audio streaming, so you can stream music wirelessly from compatible devices to the receiver, with basic control functions like "play" or "pause."

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a good thing this radio is no longer available. Within the first two months, the faceplate stopped locking in place after it was removed. I had to use a string to get it to lock and now I cannot use the CD player. Also, about four months of use, the bluetooth is connected to my phone, it would randomly produce a high pitched squeal. about 18 months after use, the volume would randomly stop working and the display would quit. This radio is not a good buy.

    Horrible Radio Reception

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to replace factory radio in 2003 Volvo S40. Had to purchase extra equipment to install into existing factory amplifier. Not happy with radio reception. Only get two local stations clearly, and even then I get a lot of background whining that seems to engine speed related.

Pros: Bluetooth was easy to set up and use.

Cons: Horrible radio reception. Installation material was incomplete.

Crutchfield response on 7/19/2016 Once we saw this review, our Tech Support team reached out to help the customer. We'll either help him get the receiver working the way it should, or help him return it for an exchange or refund.

I bought this stereo to replace the factory one in my 2002 Camry. I was very pleased with the ease of installation and setup as they were both very simple. I have been using it for a few weeks now and I am quite satisfied with my purchase. The sound quality is excellent and would only improve if you increased your budget dramatically.

Pros: Built sturdy Simple to use Good sound quality Many functions

Cons: Radio signal strength below par

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall it's a decent unit. The problem with it, as with many units in the price range, is that the features are not the easiest to understand how to use. I am a tech savvy guy, but despite all of the google searches and looking through the manual, I still can't figure out how to set the clock. The hands free calling was also a bit touchy at first, but a quick restart of my iPhone 6s fixed the connection there so I'm not sure if it was an issue with the unit or the phone.

Pros: Hands free calling works great Display isn't uncomfortably bright at night Quality for the price is excellent

Cons: Some of the features are super intuitive

    Detachable Face Failure

    1995 Jeep Wrangler
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you have to remove your radio face daily, I would not recommend purchasing this one. This is hands down the worst detachable face radio that I have owned. When I reinstall the face IAW the owners manual, it is very difficult to attach back to the radio. You have to finagle back on, and it never goes on like the owners manual states. This morning I was trying to install the face and one of the attachment points broke off and the face will not mount on the radio now. I radio was poorly made, about a week after installing it, the clear display cover fell off and I had to glue it back on.

    Pros: Big dispay

    Cons: Poorly constructed faceplate

Easy to operate, looks good easy to install. It does sound good, but ... The time display you can barely see when the radio off, and the reception is not the greatest.

Pros: Nice features specially the hand free call via Bluetooth.

Cons: Display is not the best.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I never had a flip down face before and I was a little skeptical on the durability. However, I thought for the price, it should be fine. I guess I was wrong about that. Not even 6 months and it broke. I emailed Crutchfield who told me to contact Boss as they have a 1 year warranty (I am out of the Crutchfield warranty). I emailed Boss, they never responded back. The ticket closed without a response from them. I emailed them again and gave a negative customer rating. Then I got a reply! They asked for a receipt, so I gave it to them and never heard again. The ticket closed again. Stay away. The latch is not durable and Boss will not make good on their warranty.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This seems to be a great radio. I don't care about coolness so that explains that rating. Ease of use is involved because this radio has so many options for listening. It seems well made and sounds good.

Pros: Went in easily, sounds great, and has many listening options. Radio even includes blue tooth answer for telephone.

Cons: Many listening options that are explained only by acronym.

Crutchfield provides me with the installation instruction, which was very helpful and saved me over $100.00 of installation labor fees. The face plate is not not easy to take off and clip it back on!

Pros: It can be controlled through an app where I change all settings. Bluetooth feature is awesome Pandora capable!

Cons: It is very hard to remove the face plate!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Its a decent radio for the cost. The bluetooth works well. However, the build quality was a bit shoddy. The volume knob was bent and the usb plug was also bent. Also, the radio reception is very poor. Lots of static on weaker signals. You also can't change the display to show the clock instead of the radio station.

    Pros: Bluetooth

    Cons: Quality, Radio, Display

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product had a decent sound for the price, but it gets one star because the build quality just isn't there. After a few months, the hinge that swivels the faceplate broke. Then a couple of months later, the latch that held the top of the faceplate in place broke. Stay Away! Very Fragile Hinges And Latch! This receiver was not mistreated in any way.

    Pros: Decent sound. Great features.

Cons: Build quality is poor. Hinges and latch break.

    Can't beat the features...

Everything works fine and it was easy to install. However, the instruction manual that came with the radio was a joke. It was generic to a whole lot of similar radios. I still can't figure out how to set the clock and how to make it display the clock while it is playing or when it is on standby.

Pros: Good value, easy to install

    Cons: Manual is a bust.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So my stereo went out in my 03 Honda accord. Honda charged me $200 just to take the radio out to look at it and determined I would have to pay another $400 or such to get a new factory one. Screw that! Buy this! My dad helped me install it and it wasn't even that hard (took awhile, but was easy to figure out). I didn't even know the radio had a blue tooth option until after I installed it and that is basically all I use you don't even need an aux cord!

Pros: BLUE TOOTH! retractable cd player, radio works good as well, easy enough to install

Cons: Whenever I turn my car on the radio turns on with the volume a little too loud, there must be a way to change that setting but I haven't looked into it much.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought the unit 6 months ago and was fairly satisfied with it. As stated by others the clock doesn't really display to a usable degree and other features aren't very user friendly. All in all though, for the price it couldn't be beat. About a month ago, however, the radio started skipping out no matter what input source was being used. Then it would start turning off and resetting randomly, causing trouble if Bluetooth was connected. often when listening to Fm it either cuts out audio completely or sends a terrible ringing through the speakers. It has also developed a habit of sending the balance all the way to the left. It was good while it lasted.

    Pros: Price, options

Cons: Poor build quality, failing software

This is a great stereo for the price. Unfortunately it is all that I can afford. But it was really easy to install. Well, as it is the only car stereo I have installed I can only really say that it was easier to install than I expected! The sound quality is not as great as I expected, although that may be due to the speakers I was able to afford. Also, it took me forever to figure out how to change the start-up volume. Press the biggest button for at least 2 seconds and the first menu setting is the start-up volume. This will change the default volume that it always goes to when you turn on the car.

Pros: Easy to install Great with Bluetooth! It has a remote! Not sure what it's for, but it has one.

Cons: Not the best sound quality Weird to put the CD in behind a face plate Really cryptic and short owner's manual which doesn't even include all of the instructions

Unit has great features. Just a few downfalls.

Pros: USB port, SD card slot, Bluetooth.

Cons: The Bluetooth phone feature is very poor quality in the microphone side. People say they can't hear me really well. CD player skips at high volume. Poor radio reception. Stations that I had no issues with on my stock unit will barely come in now.

When I was first looking into getting a stereo, I was little conflicted with what I should get. A lot of people said go with Kenwood. To be quite honest, I wasn't really convinced with Kenwood. You're paying for the brand and cool flashing colors than the actual quality of the stereo. Bosh surprised me with the quality of sound and accessibility of options. This bosch stereo didn't just amplify my sound, it kicked my old stereo's ass. Definitely recommend buying it.

Pros: The installation kit it comes with was super nice! The installation process was easy. Super easy. The wiring diagram shows you what goes to what and the wiring harness the kit comes with is super nice! It connects to the old wiring harness in your vehicle.

Cons: The settings for the volume when you turn your car on are nonexistent as far as I'm concerned. Your volume is set at a certain volume and you can't change or adjust the settings. Other than that, it's tight!

    2005 Pontiac Vibe
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The radio performs its functions competently, but is not designed well in several areas. When I installed it, I noticed that when the radio was not on, the clock did not display. My wife does not use it constantly, but would like to see the clock, as she did on the factory radio. You can actually see the figures if there is enough light, but they are not lit as they would be in the factory radio, or on my aftermarket unit. I called support about this, and the tech said this was a software issue that was being addressed, and to call back in a couple months at which time he would e-mail me a software update to load. After several months I sent them an e-mail, but never got a response. I called and waited forever, but was given the option of leaving my number for a call-back. They never called. Finally I sent another e-mail, and was told that if there were a software update the unit would need to be returned, but that they did not plan to update anything. So she is stuck with no clock. Other features are poor; for example, to put a CD in the unit, you need to drop the front down. Once you put a CD in the unit, you cannot use the radio without removing it; there is no mode or function switch. I like to leave a disk in mine so I can go back and forth when I don't want to listen to the radio, I am between stations, or whatever. I do not want to have to have a CD holder and fumble around with dropping the front and loading it every time. Price is good but features are not.

    Pros: Performs basic functions well

Cons: No clock unless the radio is on, and even then you need to toggle the display. Drop-down door for loading CD's. Will not play the radio if CD is in the unit. Terrible customer support.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit looks nice. But it just about ends there for me. The button presses have a cheap sound and feel. There is no treble so the sound is muffled. The bass is hurting too. Worst thing is that during the installation I had trouble receiving radio stations. I had to jiggle the antenna jack to get it to receive. After about 1 day in the car, the signal was lost again. I'm going to consider this a defect and will be returning the unit and buying something better for a bit more money.

Pros: Features like Bluetooth, SD card slot, USB, auxiliary input, remote control, and anti-theft removable face.

Cons: Very cheap feel, poor sound, defective antenna jack.

The unit was trouble from the jump! You truly get what you pay for! Price was good but this units clock doesn't keep the correct time! Radio is ok unit recognizes the USB & SD card but plays them sometimes & the other times it displays error 2 I have no idea what that means and the manual is not very detailed and doesn't have troubleshooting! The CD skips at the end of most songs! The USB /SD card & CD all were new and plays just find in my other cars! This unit is a nightmare I'm going to buy a new unit like I should have done from the start! UPDATED 1/21/14: I want to thank you for your help I formatted the USB drive and it now works just fine. I noticed you mentioned not to use an SD or USB drive over 16GB well funny thing is that the 16GB USB drive was the only USB drive that would work till you told me about formatting them because I was trying to use the 8GB USB drives at first & would always get that error 2 message when I didn't get it on the 16GB drive. I feel a lot better now about buying the Boss now. I figured out how to set the time you have to hit clk on the remote & use the - or the + to set the time. I don't know why this isn't mentioned in the owners manual but I'm glad that the Crutchfield Tech team was there to explain & help me out.

Pros: Good price and sales pitch works well on paper!

Cons: Clock doesn't keep the right time and had to get too. Manual is not very detailed for this unit! USB/SD Cards plays sometimes other times it displays error 2 I don't know what that means and there isn't a troubleshooting page in the manual! Can't find songs CD skips threw songs put it in my other cars the CD USB & SD card all works fine!

It does what it says it will do.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's ok. It does what it says it will do. The Bluetooth was what I was looking for, and that works. Good price for the component with a bluetooth option. However... moving through music files on the SD card is nearly impossible. It's a linear progression, period, you can't skip through folders. So plan on pressing the forward button a lot to advance through your collection. The display is always blue and is always at a predetermined brightness. I see no way to change either. Also, I had inquired if this console would work with the steering wheel controls, and I was told it would... it doesn't. So, bottom line, if you're deadset on having bluetooth, like I was, then the trade off for losing the DVD player, steering wheel controls, and XM radio is worth it in my '06 Honda Pilot. The price is good for what it does, just don't expect anything fancy.

    Pros: Works as described

Cons: Not as intuitive as I would have hoped.

This is the 2nd Boss radio Crutchfield has sent me and its just like the first. FM radio reception is horrible. It barely pulls in any FM channels. (no there is not a problem with my antenna or reception in my area) The sound quality is tinny at best with no individual treble or bass adjustments. The clock doesn't keep accurate time. (have to keep adjusting it) This is my fault for trying to cheap out and by a budget radio. Never again!

Pros: It does have usb and SD card readers as well as Bluetooth for phone and cd player. For the price, cant beat that

Cons: Good luck trying to find just that one single song you want to hear on your usb or SD card which you will be listening to frequently because your fm radio doesn't work haha. With out the remote just to see what time it is you have to go into the menu and push buttons several times. Not a driving friendly kind of radio.

This is a good value if you listen to CDs, iPod, or want to use your phone through the unit. If you listen to the radio a lot as I do, forget it. You will be disappointed! Buy one that has a HD tuner. The HD tuner on the JVC I bought here is fantastic with my cheap window antenna on my 2004 Honda Civic. That leads me to Chrutchfields fantastic return policy! I called & wanted a JVC unit sent to me before I sent the Boss unit back & they did it! No hansel, no problem, postage paid, done!. Chrutchfield has me as a customer forever as long as they continue with the policy's they have now! I'm very satisfied with my new JVC unit, that has a two year warrant, & Chrutchfield.

    Customer Q&A

    Crutchfield asked
    Why did you buy this?

Have had good experience with Boss car stereos. Purchased this model for its playback features, CD/SD/USB/Bluetooth, not found in other brands. Crutchfield will be my go-to source for most if not all electronic purchases in the future. [ James  Jun 28, 2016 ]
Reasonably priced; good reviews. However, it did not perform well. Occasionally, parts of the letters on the LCD display would be missing; it was impossible to read. Local FM station signals that are always strong and clear on any other radio, would sound weak and full of static. The face plate required a lot of pressure to engage the contacts on the main unit. Above all, the user manual was poorly written and many acronyms were not defined in any way, making setup difficult to complete. [ A  May 31, 2016 ]

They don't make it easy as that's not even in the manual. I went to their web site and found the size is up to 32GB. [ Paul  Dec 21, 2015 ]  Staff
The faceplate only hinges down so you can insert a CD it does not detach completely. Also I would not recommend this unit if you're going to use the radio it does not have a very good capture feature in other words it does not pick up stations very well [ LOREN W  Jun 15, 2015 ]
Yes fold it down then pull it off. [ CRAIG  Jun 15, 2015 ]
It does, but I find that it's quite a hassle to get back on. [ Timothy  Jun 15, 2015 ]
    Yes it does. [ STEPHANIE  Jun 15, 2015 ]

the microphone has a cable that you connect to the back of the unit. It gives you the ability to install the mic where you want it. I ran it to the drivers side visor area and it works great [ Jason  May 02, 2015 ]
Microphone opening is on the units face plate. [ William  Apr 27, 2015 ]
I don't remember a clock. My stereo quit playing CD's, "ERROR 5" would flash on the faceplate, no idea what that meant. [ PATTY M  May 02, 2015 ]

I play music on mine through my iPhone all the time. I either use the auxiliary or play it through the Bluetooth. Works great. [ STEPHANIE  Dec 06, 2014 ]
Yes, anything via the aux will work fine. Bluetooth connections work well too. The USB and SD card inputs are more tricky and difficult to navigate especially with a lot of folders. The other thing that bugs me is you can't have the clock set to be the default screen. When you're listening to your iPhone, it will just show "aux" if your plugged in or "BT audio" if you're on via Bluetooth. Other than that, its worked well. [ Christopher  Dec 05, 2014 ]
It actually will play iphones via bluetooth, and this does allow you to change songs from the stereo. [ KARA  Dec 05, 2014 ]
Yes aux cord will work with iphones. Bluetooth also works well and is what I use. Just don't plug in iphone through usb, as that is how mine broke. [ CRAIG  Dec 05, 2014 ]
Yes, it will work if you connect through aux. I was disappointed with the weak reception of the receiver. If you live in an area with weak reception, such as hills, you might consider a radio with a better, more sensitive receiver. [ Keith  Dec 05, 2014 ]
Meghan, I don't Have an iPhone, however I play my audio books on my Samsung Galaxy S4 and my Sirius satelite radio through the AUX port. It surely can't hurt to try. You just need the proper cable,to go from your headphone port on your phone to the AUX port on your radio. Good luck. [ Billy  Dec 05, 2014 ]
Absolutely! I have an iPhone, and it works perfectly with the auxiliary input. However, I usually connect it via Bluetooth to play my music. [ Timothy  Dec 05, 2014 ]

Ed, I installed it on my son's car. I really do not have the aswer to that because he has not used SD card yet. He uauslly listening through his ipod. Vannak [ VANNAK  Dec 15, 2013 ]
I only use my boss as radio only. I don't have any idea on all of its uses, sorry. [ ELMER W  Dec 15, 2013 ]
Wiring this stereo was straight and easy, just follow the diagram. If you are not sure about something just call Crutchfield, those techs are more than happy to walk you through!! [ JAMES O  Dec 10, 2013 ]
Wiring was easy physically. Just connect ground to ground and power to power. (Had to call tech support to find out that a yellow wire marked "auto memory" must also be joined with the power connection to make the unit function.) All other connections were explained in easy-to-understand terms. [ Richard  Dec 03, 2013 ]
It was quite easy to wire this up to my 2008 Toyota Corolla. There was two sets of connectors with pre-stripped wires on one end. The color code matched up with the two sets of wires and I just connected them with a wirenut (I wrapped electrical tape around them for good measure). Once the sets of wires were connected, it was a simple plug in to the connectors coming out of the car, and a plug in to the radio (the radio connectors appear to be the same type of connector, just make sure the one with more wires goes into the port with more prongs) My answer is more complicated than the actual process was. [ Sean  Dec 03, 2013 ]
This was very easy to install. I purchased the stereo with the recommended wiring harness and mounting brackets. The wiring was easy but make sure you have small wire nuts (about 10 connections). I installed the stereo in a Toyota Matrix. [ Kyle  Dec 03, 2013 ]
As long as you get the wiring harness specific to your vehicle (Crutchfield does offer them and you MUST have it), it's pretty easy. Instead of taping them all together, go to the hardware store and buy those screw-on wire things. I bought the smallest I could find at 6 cents each (they're gray; Ace Hardware). That makes connection a breeze. Also, the wiring diagram provided by Crutchfield advises you to also check the manual that comes with the stereo you choose. This is not optional. You have to check it to see how the other wires connect. If I could do it, I think anyone can! [ JOHN  Dec 03, 2013 ]
The wiring is easy, all you need is the correct harness and attach it to the one for this stereo. Use butt connections and heat shrink them. [ James  Dec 03, 2013 ]
Yeah, depending upon the vehicle youre installing it in you'll need to get the adapter wiring harness but crutchfield is pretty good at letting you know what youll need to get it up and running. All I did was connect the wires with electrical tape took me a half hour or less so you shouldn't have a problem. Simple stuff- red to red, green to green pretty much fool proof good luck matt [ DOUGLAS E  Dec 03, 2013 ]
The bluetooth connection works very well. The radio switches to phone automatically when you are making or receiving calls. The people I talked to said they hear me well. There is a built in microphone in the front plate of the radio. You can also play musing from your phone in your car stereo bluetooth and it works very well with great sound quality. The only issue with having phone conversations using your car stereo is that you need to keep the volume of the speakers low enough so the person on the phone doesn't hear an echo. [ PEDRO  Nov 24, 2013 ]
    Sorry but I don't use that feature.. [ Gary  Nov 24, 2013 ]
    I have not try BT. Will inform when I do [ THOMAS N  Nov 24, 2013 ]
Phone linked up fine with the BT, I never had the chance to make or receive a call though. Returned item due to poor radio reception. I just placed an order for the Kenwood KCD-BT755HD. $100 more but I think you get what ya pay for. [ BRENT  Nov 24, 2013 ]
Yes but you have to push the main control knob a couple of times for it to display and only shows for a couple of seconds. Another reason for returning it. Poor radio reception. [ BRENT  Nov 24, 2013 ]
Thanks for your question. This receiver does have a clock. [ Jeff  Nov 21, 2013 ]  Staff
I did not have Sirius radio and not planning to have it. Therefore, I do not know the answer to this question. [ VANNAK  Dec 02, 2013 ]
Yes it will - I use Sirius app on my iPhone and run through aux- this is a great unit especially for the price! Bluetooth works great and can charge iPhone through USB ... [ JAMES G  Nov 17, 2013 ]
Yes, any device plugged into the 3mm aux jack will play. [ STEVEN  Nov 17, 2013 ]
    Yes, I have XM radio and it played :-) [ PAUL A  Nov 15, 2013 ]
Hey Billy, can't answer that one as I have yet to install mine. Been TOO cold, but am hoping tomorrow may be the day. It was advertised to do so as I bought it for the same reason. I live in the mountains and get little to no radio service but did with a SIRIUS radio in another vehicle. It worked the same way then by using the AUX plug ... [ THOMAS  Nov 15, 2013 ]
