If you're ready to ditch that album full of scratched-up CDs and go digital, Boss Audio's 812UAB digital media receiver offers an impressive array of features for its price range, plus a variety of connections for your devices.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

Go digital without going broke

If you're ready to ditch that album full of scratched-up CDs and go digital, Boss Audio's 812UAB digital media receiver offers an impressive array of features for its price range, plus a variety of connections for your devices.

Plenty of ways to play

This double-DIN (4" tall) receiver can fill a big space and provide plenty of entertainment. You can pop an SD™ card full of music into the slot behind the front panel, or enjoy your local AM/FM stations. Plug a thumb drive into the front panel USB port to enjoy MP3 files, or use the aux input to connect a portable satellite radio tuner. That front panel aux input will also work with a portable CD player -- if you haven't quite finished digitizing everything, you've got a backup plan in place.

Hands-free convenience

Buying a budget receiver doesn't mean giving up conveniences like built-in Bluetooth® connectivity. With the 812UAB, you can take calls or stream music stored on a smartphone without taking your hands off the wheel.

Plenty of great features

You can use the 4 EQ presets and the tone controls to shape the sound, while a set of RCA outputs gives you room to expand your system with an outboard amp. Handy illumination controls allow you to adjust the brightness of the display. It even comes with a remote control for your backseat passengers.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Smartphone note: If you're going to use your Android smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

    Piece of Junk

    Xterra07OffRoad from Colorado on 11/4/2014

I bought this as a short-term solution to my stock cd player/radio burning out. I thought the low price and features looked good on paper. What I found out when I installed this is the incessant engine whine coming through the speakers. I moved my ground wire several times and testing each time for good contact. Nothing could get rid of the whine. Another bothersome thing about this radio is that volume control does not attenuate smoothly. I would constantly adjust between 3 (which was too low) and 4 (which jumped several dbs and was too loud!). The Bluetooth input would not play cleanly but I attribute that to the poor internal electronics of this cheap deck. I proved all this out when I bought a brand locally that has never let me down; a Kenwood cd/tuner under $100, installed in just 15 minutes and played *cleanly* using the same connections as this Boss deck. I revelled in joy and victory as i threw that Boss deck into the trash bin! Do yourself a favor and just stick to a good proven brand. Crutchfield should be ashamed to even sell this deck.

Pros: There are no "Pros" when you end up chucking this up as a lesson-learned and a loss.

Cons: Very Poor Quality electronic components

    2004 Oldsmobile Alero
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the stereo in my 2004 Alero with this after the stereo stopped working. The stereo just barely stuck out to far so I did have to shave about 1/4 of an inch off the corners of the trim to get the face plate of the stereo to sit flush with the dash trim. All the features work fine, and for the price I can't really complain much about the quality of sound.

Pros: Auxiliary port, USB port, Bluetooth

Cons: No CD player, The "default" screen doesn't have the time showing on it

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my '01 4Runner because the CD player was broken and I wanted an inexpensive unit that had bluetooth and an aux port. This fit the bill! The unit was easy to install and set up and has good sound. I don't consider myself an "elite audiophile" (anyone who considers themselves one probably wouldn't look twice at this unit anyway!) but I am very satisfied with the features and quality for the price.

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to use, and works perfectly with my iPhone as far as music goes. Have not tried any phone features.

Cons: Feels slightly cheap, but that's no big deal to me.

this product is great i most functions i would have given it all 5 stars in everything if was not for the Mic volume on it. because of being so far from the user it is not always heard clearly by the person listening on the other end. there should have being a mic extension or mic volume, but other than that great product

Pros: blue tooth media playing from phone or other device with BT also usb in the front make it easy to load and or change music as needed. hands free capable

Cons: Hands free system needs better mic .

    2003 Toyota Corolla
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this unit to replace JVC KDR-610 which was stolen from '03 Corolla. The choices for <$200 double din w/ detachable face were limited - so this unit won by default. Install was easy, unit is very lightweight, interface is simple and clean but not going to win coolness factor points for its asthetics. Does not offer led color customization like the JVC. Does, however, offer SD card reader in addition to USB. Popped in Sony 32GB card and it was instantly recognized. Sound compared to the JVC (paired w/ same exact speakers) was muddy, bass was not as tight, highs not as crisp. Tweaking Bass/Treble adjustments from 1-7 does not help. Still better than listening to NYC traffic. Next test: Bluetooth. Paired w/ Samsung Galaxy S3 in seconds. Does not have access to Phone's address book - had to manually dial number. Call quality was okay on my side, however user on the other end complained volume was very low - had to practically yell to be heard. Other thoughts: This unit still plays even with the face removed. I'm not sure if this is normal, since I do not have much experience w/ detachable face systems - but it is convenient. I just set it to continuously run through my 32GB SD card, and it picks up where it left off after turning the car off/on. Just can't change volume levels w/out the face.

Pros: Reasonable Price Sdcard/USB Support Bluetooth Support Double Din size fits dashboard nicely. Theft deterant detachable face.

    Cons: Sound Quality

    Extremely Disappointing

Mike from Mishawaka, IN on 5/8/2014

    1991 Toyota Camry
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this cause of the very low price but had to return it after a month. There were enough things wrong with it that I'll have a hard time listing them all. The biggest problem was radiated engine noise from my alternator (a whining that varies with RPM's). I'm working on my PhD in electrical engineering so I'm intimately familiar with electrical signals and electromagnetics. I did some troubleshooting and managed to eliminate the power line (used a filter), ground (ohm meter), and the wires between the receiver and the amp (short the amp input) as noise sources so the only think left was the receiver itself as the source. My previous radio (another after market) had no noise problems and neither did the new one I just installed. It was definitely the Boss receiver. This was confirmed by how the noise was reduced when I moved the receiver around the car interior. Other minor annoyances included subtle but noticeable distortion through the bluetooth (I tried multiple phones, played with the settings a lot to no avail), a very slow interface response, and unusable USB/SD card ports. Contrary to some reviews, there IS an SD card port behind the faceplate (just need to consult the manual) but both the USB and SD card are useless cause you can't change file folders at all. The USB port also would not charge my phone at all. It also was not easy to install in my 91 Camry. I had to modify my existing brackets significantly. Hands free calling is useless too.

Pros: The only pros to this receiver is that it is cheep and is a double DIN. However, for only a bit more, you can get a JVC KD-X310BT that has a TON more features and none of the problems I experienced. And if you need a double DIN, just get the JVC and install a pocket or something. DON'T BUY THIS. I have a hard time believing I'm the only person that has returned this unit and given it a low rating.

Cons: Engine noise from receiver, bluetooth distortion (AUX, SD, radio, and USB were fine), poor EQ, slow interface response, useless for reading SD card and USB devices, next to useless manual. It may have had a defective unit for all I know, but if anyone from Crutchfield reads this, you seriously might consider not selling this unit anymore. It's badly outgunned by its competition.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the unit in an 04 Frontier. After figuring out how to access almost everything without the remote I'm very happy with it. The Bluetooth from phone to music play works very well. As long as you don't need a CD it is great for the price. Boss should really spend some more bucks on writing a more detailed manual.

Pros: Great price. Good sound. Easy connect with BT. I discovered that it will play a 32GB SDHC card and playlists work:) I wish the specs detailed what the biggest card it can take.

Cons: Looks a little plain and cheap when off but not such a bad thing for when vehicle is parked on the street. No way to get the clock to stay on. Manual is very sparse but if you spend a few minutes playing with the stereo you can figure it out.

    Perfect for 00-06 Chevy Silverado

KRV from Snohomish, WA on 2/18/2014

I purchased this to replace the factory head unit in my Chevy Silverado base model. This stereo fits like it's made for the Silverado. There was 0 modifications needed to fit the deck. I didn't want a cheesy looking aftermarket head unit that would attract thieves. This does the trick and give very clear bluetooth audio and phone signals. It also has a built in mic, again with no additional modification to the vehicle. My other choice would have been the Pioneer HX700.... I saw it at another retailer and it looked too flashy like I was in Tokyo. Not really what an adult wants to see driving home at night...... I know, I'm boring.

Pros: Inexpensive head unit that fits like a factory deck in a Chevy Silverado. Easy install good sound RCA for expansion Bluetooth sounds excellent! Voice calls are clear. SD slot is BEHIND the face. (for those that can't find it.)

Cons: Contrary to another review. You CAN access the clock without using the remote by 'holding down band'. With that said, it won't stay on permanently. Really this is my only issue with the unit as I would like the clock to stay on.

This is a low end stereo that has a clock but clock never shows up unless you push a button on the remote and only shows for 30 sec. Sound quality is okay, would only buy to put into car if selling or trading in.

    Pros: cheap

Cons: Has clock but does not show on display

Tupper 1903 from East Texas on 1/25/2014

I was looking for a low cost unit and I thing this is the best of its price point. Still, there are some down sides I wish I'd been aware of

Pros: low price, RCA output, reasonable sound. WIndow's phone streams music directly via blue tooth

Cons: Most features require you to use remote - like the clock and then it only comes on for a few seconds. If you use the blue tooth, you have to use the remote to get it back to other operations. The remote is typically small with Pica 1 lettering - you end up taking eyes off the road to use it.

    2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a nice and simple unit and definitely enhances your sound with OEM speakers. Streaming via bluetooth is excellent and calls were great even from the other side as I was told. Unfortunately I returned because a certain feature was listed wrong and has been fixed by Crutchfield. It took a phone call to Boss Audio to find out this unit does NOT have RDS...... Even Boss Audio's web site stated it had RDS. Well it didn't. Simply did not work what-so-ever via USB with my Samsung GS3 running 4.3. Pulling in stations was a minor problem.... As always returning this was simple.....

Pros: Integrated mic for bluetooth calling.

Cons: No setting to display clock at all times. Two dancing bars in the display that cannot be turned off. Had to use the remote to scan radio stations. Seeking could be done on the unit.....

Thanks to Crutchfield's knowledge and great pricing. I was able to fix an Infinity flaw. Needed to swap the radio. Got all I needed for under 200 and I am beyond satisfied. Ran into a few road blocks and all I had to do was call Crutchfield, even at 10pm they were there to help. The radio sounds great and looks like factory, like it better than the original radio. Works with the Bose system, thanks to Crutchfield's knowledge. USB, SD card and Aux input makes it easy to play music files. Detachable face and remote, BONUS. Thanks for all your help!!

Pros: Great replacement for factory install issue.

    Radio on a budget

Grayson from Union Bridge on 11/27/2013

    2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Too many cons to even list. For the price I wasn't expecting much, but at least I would have expected it to fit the mounting hardware and have an SD card slot like it said. The unit generally looks and feels cheap, but at least it works. Bluetooth is probably the best thing about this unit. If you're looking for a cheap OEM replacement, this is your unit.

Pros: Sounds good and has all the features I need to access the music library on my phone (like Bluetooth and aux input) that my factory radio did not. The unit can scan the radio to find working stations. Surprisingly Bluetooth works very well (there's even an answer/hangup button on the unit for phonecalls)

Cons: Jeez, where to start. -The radio was too big to fit in the plastic mounting hardware Crutchfield provided for my vehicle, so I have no way to secure it in the dash. -USB doesn't work with my phone (Galaxy S4, Android 4.3), the phone recognizes the radio is plugged in but the radio kicks out of USB mode almost instantly. -There IS NOT an SD card slot (I can't find it for the death of me) -The whole unit is slow. Button response is slow, power up is slow, etc.

    Don't know. It fit very nicely in a 2000 Honda Civic, [ Gerry  May 13, 2014 ]
Should fit any Ford with Double Din opening. I actually installed in a 2006 Sterling Class 8 truck( same as Ford) . I needed a shallow radio due to air lines running in dash. Works great and very pleased with features for price. [ CRAIG  May 13, 2014 ]

Yes it can play an iPhone 5. I haven't tried playing music from the USB yet, but AUX and Bluetooth work great. [ Brian  Mar 12, 2014 ]
It should play as long as the phone and the radio establish a connection with each other which it should by using the usb cable [ ERWIN  Mar 11, 2014 ]
No this cant play Iphone, Meaby w/ Blue toot! [ JULIAN  Mar 10, 2014 ]
I have not been able to install it yet. [ Christopher  Mar 10, 2014 ]
I'm sure it can... I can play music via USB on my HTC. I believe when it says it doesn't have controls means that it doesn't have special abilities, like using Siri with the system. Once again, though, I'm not entirely positive, I'm just assuming. [ Remington  Mar 10, 2014 ]
I was wondering if I brought this receiver for my 2002 trailblazer. It has remote start, but I don't believe it's factory. The reason I believe it is aftermarket, is because the remote start unit has a small device right above the rearview mirror. So I don't know if it has anything to do with the factory stereo or not. I guess my question would be, if I installed the boss 812 would it interfere with the receiver in any way? [ jason  Mar 29, 2014 ]
Yes. The receiver has RCA pre-amp outputs which will connect to the RCA inputs on your amplifier. [ Matthew  Jan 28, 2014 ]
    Yes [ MICHAEL A  Jan 20, 2014 ]
Does this have AM/FM radio on it also going in a 2005 Silverdeo 1500 [ lee justice  Mar 10, 2014 ]
It is near the APS button on the receiver. You can see the location of the microphone on the first page of the manual here: [ Jeff  Jan 20, 2014 ]  Staff
Kris S, the bluetooth on this unit is awesome. I have not had a single issue using this unit. The microphone for making calls actually sounds better on this unit than on the JVC that it replaced. For the money you can't beat it IMO. [ RICHARD R  Jan 14, 2014 ]
Ray W, I have an I-phone 4S. The phone will only make calls via bluetooth. When I connect the phone to the unit, the phone asks if I trust the computer. I click trust and the head unit then refuses to acknowledge the I-phones is even there. I have tried selecting don't trust and same thing. I only use my cable/USB to charge my I-phone. I use bluetooth for everything else. [ RICHARD R  Jan 14, 2014 ]
    I don't know. It still hasn't arrived. [ KEVIN  Jan 13, 2014 ]
I have only used bluetooth, and it is great. My phone is recognized as soon as I get in my car, even if I actually have the radio tuner selected. I haven't been able to figure out how to use it with usb connection, but if that is important to you, simply call Crutchfield, these guy are great! [ Ramiro  Jan 13, 2014 ]
    Works both ways. [ Brian  Jan 12, 2014 ]
    Haven't received it yet. Sorry [ abbas  Jan 12, 2014 ]
Sorry. I gave the stereo as a gift to my son-in-law. So far he hasn't installed it. [ Harold  Jan 12, 2014 ]

Will I lose factory controls such as remote start, and other functions that are controlled by the factory stereo! [ lando  Dec 16, 2013 ]
This unit does feature Bluetooth streaming for music, so you will be able to stream music from your iPhone. [ Jeff  Nov 29, 2013 ]  Staff
