Crystal-clear digital radio

When you tune into a participating AM or FM station, you'll really notice the difference in fidelity and reception, plus you can check out the alternate programming offered by many stations. You can even set one color for the main display, and pick another for the buttons and controls.

Tag the tunes you like

First, plug your iPod or iPhone® into the handy front-panel USB slot. Now, get ready to fly through your songs and playlists with the KD-HDR70's controls. You can also switch control to the iPod itself for all those DJs in the back seat. All song and artist info will show up on the receiver's 2-line display.

Once your iPod's connected, you can take advantage of the tagging feature — just "tag" a song you're hearing on an HD Radio station, and you'll be prompted to buy it from the iTunes® store the next time you connect your iPod to the computer.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

It all starts with the sound

You'll get plenty of clean volume without distortion from the muscular built-in amplifier, and you can dial in the perfect tone for your vehicle using the flexible 3-band parametric EQ.

Play all your music

This versatile stereo will handle all your CDs and recordable discs, as well as discs or or thumb drives you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. With two auxiliary inputs, you can connect a satellite radio dock semi-permanently to the rear input, while you use the front input to plug in a game console or other audio source.

Building a system?

Three sets of high-powered 5-volt preamp outputs send a super-clean signal to your outboard amps. The subwoofer output features a selectable low-pass filter, and you can use the sub level control to add just the right amount of bass. The KD-AHD79 also works with JVC's Bluetooth® adapter so you can conduct phone conversations while both hands stay on the wheel.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Really nice head unit with a ton of great features. I like that you can switch the head unit to iPod/iPhone mode, I wish other companies would start doing the same.

Really nice head unit with a ton of great features. I like that you can switch the head unit to iPod/iPhone mode, I wish other companies would start doing the same.

Pros: Good sound quality, features and specs for its price range.

Cons: The display is impossible to read during the day in my truck, no matter what color I use. My windows are tinted dark and I've never had this problem with any other head units.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had purchased a really simplistic receiver after I had my Jetta broken into, and my Sony receiver stolen. BTW, I never thought those little tabs ion the housing that are supposed to keep it theft free would ever really do the job. My bad... They broke my window because my alarm was on, and did so much damage that my insurance company had to replace the whole dashboard, vents, etc. I still have the receiver, as I think they got so pissed, they took the faceplate to prove a point. Anyhoo, I love this receiver. Talk about a huge sound difference, and I pick to 16 HD stations here in Austin, and even a few out of San Antonio on a cloudy day. I loved the sound so much, I decided to upgrade my speakers.

Pros: Sound quality, reception, and love the color aspect. Crutchfield rocks... I received this receiver, and didn't install for a few days. After installation last weekend, I took a road trip and the faceplate kept popping out. I realized that the tab to hold the faceplate in had broken in transit. I sent them an e-mail via the website requesting a RMA, and by noon Monday, they had sent out a replacement. I can't say enough about the customer service.

Cons: The only con that I have found is that if you use auto tune to tune in stations, the receiver doesn't pick them all up. This is especially noticed if you have one station putting out multiple channels.

Simply amazing! Not just because I replaced the factory 8-track player in my 77 Vette but because the head provides great ease of use even with the included remote which comes in hands since I have it mounted behind me. I was so impressed with this unit I bought a second for my 90 Mustang.

Pros: Remote! USB port handy in the front. Tech support was top notch as I needed to call a couple of times to figure out wiring that applied to this century

    Cons: None

Works better than my AHD69 which is in my SUV. This 79 is in my wifes SUV and I wanted to take it from her. Works great, install kit is awesome. Called tech support twice to verify what I was seeing and they were awesome and fast as always.

Pros: Tech Support, the radio functinality is simliar to my older model and I will not but my radios from anyone else. This radio makes the 1997 stock speakers sound good again.

    Cons: none so far

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love it, has all the things my old Sony Xplod was missing, Plays MP3's, has HD Radio a USB/IPod port, input port on the front and back, amp and subwoofer connections. Bought it on sale, almost $80 off what it was when I put it in my wish list! I've not seen another receiver that has all the features the JVC Arsenal KD-AHD79. The only other radio I'd seen with HD Radio built in and not requiring an adaptor was a Dual which I'd never heard of before.. Sounds great on my Polk speakers, better than the Sony did. I had it easier to install in my 2003 F150 because it was replacing the Sony most of the work was done. I soldered and heat shrinked the connections on the harness. Hardest part was removing the sleeve for the Sony.. Once I got the new sleeve in, the JVC just plugged in. The sleeve didn't fit as tight as the Sony, tabs were not quite in the right places to grab the adaptor, that was my only complaint with installing it. The menu to sent it up wasn't that bad if you read the directions, took me maybe 5 minutes of playing with it to get it set up the way I wanted. But I'm good at that sort of thing.

Pros: Built in HD Radio, USB/ IPod compatible. I don't have an IPod so I can not comment on the control interface.

Cons: Only thing I can think of is it doesn't have blue tooth built in and requires an adaptor which uses the input on the back of the radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I Love my new HD Radio! The only complaint I have is it is very difficult to set up everything on it. The directions are HORRIBLE! It seems like they assume you have done this type of installation before and they don't have text explaining what the limited illustrations represent and they leave out some steps! I had my cousin help me and he is no dummy and even he feels the same way about it. I am just using it as is until I get the patience to go back and try to figure it out! I however have been nothing but Happy with the service Crutchfield provided!

Pros: Sounds great with my factory speakers. The price was very reasonable. The look of the stereo is very nice. It looks like it was factory installaled.

Cons: It is very frustrating to set up all the features on it. The directions are HORRIBLE!

    Pretty solid!

Sound quality is good, looks great, 5v pre outs really make your amp shine. Parametric eq is more than enough to tailor the sound to your liking. Feels well made, nice finish. Buttons are firm, not cheap feeling like pioneer. iPod search functions could be better (I.e. alpine) and display is alright.

    Pros: Sound quality, aesthetics

Cons: Screen not visible during daytime in most color shades

Shockingly easy installation!! A PAIR OF WIRE STRIPPERS WAS THE ONLY TOOL I NEEDED FROM MY TOOLBOX. It took longer to program the stations than to install the radio. 15 minutes.....Spent 5 minutes with the support guy before I started. Really, less than 30 minutes to wire, remove, install, play. Catalog CHAT function was helpful during selection.

Pros: Great sound, Ease of use. I enjoy the digital stations.

    Cons: Display not bright enough.

The sound that emerges from my pickups original 13 yr old speakers puts a grin on my face every time I power up the system. Many colors are washed out in even partly sunny days, meaning unpleasant color selections so you can read faceplate. Add in a $50.00 off the price as well as a very able tech support madkes this a sound investment without buyers remorse.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Brought our 10 year old Land Rover up to current technology, at least in the sound system area. Now we have iphone compatability, as well as USB. The HD Radio is a nice touch as well. The unit is connected with the Harmon Kardon factory amp, running off the head unit pre-amp outputs. Crutchfield's wiring harness was a real labor saver and well thought out. A Merta Axxess was added to retain steering wheel controls. Very happy with the end result.

Pros: Nice unit with many features. The selectable face lighting allowed a nice match to the dash illumination - Unit blends well !

Cons: So many choices on the set-up menu. Takes a while to become familiar. Better than having few choices........

I was thoroughly impressed with this product. Originally, I was looking at the Sony CDX-GT700HD because I knew that I wanted a stereo receiver with built-in HD radio, and I have always been pleased with sony products. However, Crutchfield pointed out that this particular model would not work with my car's dash set-up, so I continued browsing. When I saw the JVC KD-AHD79, I was blown away by the deal that Crutchfield was offering. I love all of the features that this unit has to offer, but I just wish some company would make something compatible with Zune. Oh well...

Pros: Tons of different display color options, easy to install (thanks to Crutchfield), great price, HD Radio, dual aux. inputs

Cons: Not compatible with Zune (we can thank Steve Jobs for that)

Very nice improvement. Replaced a dead stock head unit in 1997 BMW M3. Well worth the price. Nice to be able to change the display to match the interior lighting. Installation was very easy with the included adapter. Remote control is kind of a waste of money. Sounds great through the existing Harman Kardon premium sound. Would be five stars if it was more inline with the existing layout of the car. A 2012 head unit in a 1997 car just doesn't go all that well. Nakamichi and the stock rebuilts are cost prohibitive.

    Pros: Ease of installation

    Cons: None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in 2003 Nissan Pathfinder. The head unit itself works great and has many useful features. It sounds pretty good, but as I retained the rest of the stock Nissan system ( amps and speakers ) it is hard to judge by itself. I did try two ways to install this unit: 1) Preamps directly out to the Nissan amplifiers, and 2) using the Scosche OEM amplifer integration kit wired to the speaker line outs. Both methods yielded acceptable results, but the the OEM amplifer integration kit yielded better gain so I went with that. Overall a very nice unit with many input and display costomization options.

Pros: Customizable EQ, pre amp outs with sub woofer, relatively intuitive menus

Cons: Menu access buttons are a little small.

I purchased this unit recently, and have found it to be relatively good, especially for the price. It was relatively easy to set up, and took all of 5 minutes to figure out.

Pros: relatively user friendly color changing can be flashy, or can be set to match dash lights. looks clean, almost OEM

Cons: I cannot manage to make it stay in the dash. i used the supplied bracket, and while it fits into the bracket, the bracket has no visible method of staying in the dash. strange. The auto dimmer sucks. I dont think it knows the difference between daytime and nighttime.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The radio is pretty cool. Installed in 97 Rav. Wife wanted something to charge & play her Iphone 4 with. I installed by self and so far the unit has been good. Being able to select your interior color is really cool -- especially for the wife as she notices that kind of stuff.

Pros: Sound is good -- factory speakers need to go next I guess, but can tell a difference from the old factory stereo. Love that it plays & charges Iphone 4. Price was also quite nice!

Cons: The only con so far is that the control nob is not necessarily to my liking, but it works fine, just don't care for the feel of it and the buttons to the left of it. Make no mistake though, they do function fine.

Looks great, easy to use, sounds great.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 5 volt preamp output makes for excellent sound quality. The variable display will match the interior of any vehicle. The device is very intuitive and easy to use. I'd say this deck is all around awesome. The variable colors for day and night are also a nice feature.

Pros: Display looks great, and is easy to see unless the sun is directly on it (can't really avoid that one) It automatically switches to CD or USB when one is inserted Settings for HPF for main speakers and LPF for sub. There is a port specifically made for subwoofers, but make sure you wire the sub correctly or it will not work.

Cons: So far I think this deck will hold up really well, but there is a lot of plastic on the face plate, which only time will tell if it is sturdy in construction or not. I haven't had it for very long so I really have nothing negative to say about it though.

Pros: easy of installation and the sound is great and the eq is very useful in setting the tone to your ear

Cons: trying to get the preset for the fm radion set and then trying to change one just for list preview for me, have only been able to set 1 preset correctly and cannot get preset 2 to take the frec. I want in preset 2. I have spent at least 2 hours tryng to figure out how to set a new frec over one that was set incorrectly. have not tried to set the 3rd preset. the instructions are not clear on what button to turn, push or double push.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this unit for about a year, installed in my 2000 Maxima with original speakers. This unit puts out good sound which would probably sound better had I gotten new speakers as well. There are a couple annoyances I would like to get out there. 1) If I am listening to the radio and connect an ipod to the front USB it automatically changes source to the USB. Same with the CD player. I would like to see it continue to play the source it is on and not change until I change it. 2) I like buttons to set radio stations to because you can get right to a station at the press of a button. With this unit you must go through all of your set stations to get to the one you want. There are 18 presets to set, if I want to get to preset station #9 I have to press the button 9 times to get to it. 3) If I am on preset station #5, press button to search for next station, it looses the fact that I started searching from preset #5 so I then have to start back at preset station #1 to get back to #5.

Pros: Overall good value/sound for the price

    Cons: Mentioned above

I searched a bit for my needs, and the CF advisor helped me narrow it down. I wanted to spend at least 120 to get all the instll goodies included, so I ended up with this. Sounds great. Also the HD is way cool. I was in Chicago yesterday and was amazed at the amount of HD channels, some stations had 3 extra HD stations on the same station! Also love the USB, it is excellent. I just pop inn the USB and it automatically detects and quickly at that. Tomorrow my new Rockford Fosgate speakers will arrive from CF and after that I am sure I will be verey happy based on reviews (Rockford Fosgate Prime R1682). Great uinit and Crutchfield has the BEST customer service ever.

Pros: All the colors, decent remote that is actually quite handy, great sound out of box, no external amp necessary for my listening needs. I am not 22 anymore!

Cons: There is a learning vurve for this unit, but not that bad really. Ive had it in 2 days and am pretty familiar with it. Granted I don't use bluetooth or iPhones.

Peroduct is as described. The only thing I found wrong, and it is not with the radio, Is the number of HD radio stations on the air. I went back and forth on this radio for the HD radio, or one that had a Bluetooth for phone interface and calling capabilities. If I had it to do over again, I might go with the Bluetooth. However, I do like the tag feature to capturing song info for later review and order through iPod and ITunes. So I guess I am still going back and forth. All said and done, I like the radio for the price and would recommend to a friend...

Pros: HD radio, tag feature, ease of installation, and build quality.

Cons: Not really any, but be aware....... Sound is not the greatest, but that is probably from replacing the radio and speakers in my car, and not including an amp. The low bass response is just not there. Just don't expect too much without investing in some upgrades to a factory system beyond the radio and speakers. I do plan to add a powered subwoofer for bass response, and not to rattle my license plate.

Pros: Easy to use, Very cool look with the buttons and variable colors, Very easy to use with my iPod touch, Sound quality is fantastic, The volume goes way louder than I would ever care to go to

Cons: The buttons are a little small and have a cheap plastic feel, but this is a very minor detail. This is a great radio for this price!

Overall it has a lot of nice settings for such a low priced unit, one of the lowest priced hd radio units and it works great, nice option for all the colors for display, great pre amp voltage

Pros: Bit hard to tune each setting does for bass and tremble, probably to do with octaves and stuff I have not tried to learn yet, but there is a lot of frequency range option over the sony I used to have, hd radio sounds amazing and this unit nicely switches back and forth to analog as needed unlike others I have heard the crap about where you have to specifically turn on hd radio each time it goes out 5V pre amps for a cheap price, great port selection, nice volume protection for stock speakers

Cons: Need a bit of time to tune everything but once thats done its all sailing from there, and dont expect to tune the settings while driving, the menu is a bit hard

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my aged Rockford Fosgate source unit with this JVC, slightly concerned that the quality wouldn't be as good. I was pleasantly surprised! I went with the KD-AHD79 after having great results with a KD-AHD69 in my fiance's car. Aesthetically, this is a great looking radio, and the variable color display is great. I thought not having preset buttons would be hard to get used to, but in all honesty, JVC made it very easy to navigate. FM reception is phenomenal, even with a short antenna. I like that you can turn off am radio and the rear auxiliary input, so when you are selecting a source, if you don't use them, they don't appear. Sound quality is great, and with 5 volt pre-amp outputs, there is clean powerful signal going to the amps. The equalizer has a decent amount of adjustment for a built in 3 band eq. It allows for the selection of the frequency that you want to adjust within the bass, mid, and treble selection. Overall, there is a lot of bang for the buck when it comes to this receiver, and after comparative shopping with the typical electronics retailers, Crutchfield is definitely the way to go!

Pros: Easy to use, great build quality, packed full of features, and a great looking receiver.

Cons: The remote is on the small side.

First order from Crutchfield. Very pleased with the unit so far; I bought it after reading the comments here and b/c it was within my budget. I particularly like the ease of use and interface with my iPod Touch 4 Gen, where I have most of my music. I've tried playing "shorter" mixes using USB drives and again, the unit excels at recognizing the files and playing them right away. Same with MP3 CDs. HD is nice but quite frankly, I mostly listen to my music, not the radio. Highly recommended as a first upgrade.

This is my second JVC HD receiver. First on is first generation HD. This one is Far better than the original style (which is still in use.) Being able to scan to the next HD channel right along with the regular stations is great. Sound quality is awesome!! Clear and powerful.A great upgrade from stock. Typical JVC confusing and too small controls is the only drawback.

Pros: Great HD Radio esp for the price.

Cons: Small difficult to use and understand control functions. Only a three band equalizer.

This is my Second JVC receiver. My first was the JVC KD-S100 Bongiovi CD Receiver. This receiver is just as nice. The sound clarity is great. It does lack the SD card slot but that is not a big loss. The lighting setup is great way to blend the radio into the same color scheme as the vehicle. The preset equalization settings are a nice help when you don't want to fiddle with the levels if you change music genre.

Pros: Variable Lighting setup. Sound quality. Great sound for the price.

Cons: Lack of SD card slot not a big deal. The controls are little cramped and if you have big fingers hitting the folder up and source change buttons may be a challenge.

This turned out to be one of the smarter purchases I've ever made. Sound quality is fantastic even with the stock speakers. There is a learning curve involved with figuring out how every thing works but once you understand things, it's pretty basic. I purchased this unit mainly for being able to play my iPod Classic and it did not disappoint. Keep the manual handy and you will love this receiver.

Pros: The kaleidoscope of colors is very cool. Great value. Sound quality is excellent.

This one is newer and sleeker looking but the functionality and user friendliness doesn't seem to compare. The remote even looks 'dumbed' down. I am kinda disappointed. Sure, it's a good deal for the price but the previous discontinued model was frankly better.

Pros: Sleek, 3 pre amp outputs (gold plated), lots of functions

Cons: Lower price but lower quality in comparison to the previous unit.

I purchased the JVC KD-AHD79 to replace the factory stereo in my 2004 Jeep Wrangler. I also replaced the front and soundbar speakers with Polks. The new system cranks lound and clear even over my noisy soft top. I'm hearing instruments in the music that I never heard before. The feature I like the best is the USB port. I bought a Sandisk 16G Cruzer Fit USB that is so tiny you can barely notice it's plugged in. It holds close to 280 CD's so I now have access to nearly my entire music library without having to maneuver CD's and cases while driving. I wasn't sure I'd like that feature, but now I'm so glad I have it! The variable color display gives you many options to choose from...or not. I keep it on colorflow so it scrolls through all the colors. Radio stations come in clear and setting the station presets was easy. This unit does not have individual preset buttons like other stereos, but it only requires pressing a button and scrolling to the preset you want. I researched many stereo reviews and chose this head unit based on the excellent reviews and the features it offered. Crutchfield service is excellent and provides detailed instructions to make installation easy.

Pros: USB port, variable color display, HD radio, signal strength, remote, and excellent sound quality.

    Great Sound and OK Menus

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an awesome stereo as far as pure sound quality is concerned. The color configuration is nice too. HD Radio reception is great. The menus leave something to be desired. You can go through presets by quick tapping the up/down arrows so that isn't a big problem. My problems are that you can't attach subwoofer settings to an EQ profile. So I can't have some presets to switch between for the subwoofer output. This means I have to constantly adjust the LPF, SW Level, and/or AMP Gain to suit the style of music I am playing. This is kind of dangerous since you have to go Menu (long press) > turn know to Audio > SW Level > press knob > adjust to proper level (press knob). In addition, the low pass filter cannot be turned off. You can pick from 55, 85, and 120, but you cannot disable it and rely on your amp's LPF. This bothers me because my subs have a response range of 34-300Hz, and I would like to not be limited at the high end of the sound spectrum arbitrarily. The bluetooth (using the separately purchased KS-BTA100 adapter) is the best I have ever used. It auto-connects to my android phone when I start the car if the phone has BT on, if not I can get it to connect with a button press. Voice dialing works as well. On the other hand, you cannot use the stereo's forward, back, and play/pause buttons with the BT device. You have to use those on the KS-BTA100 which seems kind of backwards to me. All in all it is a good unit.

Pros: Color Control, simple design deters theft, nice power to speakers, HPF is very nice for keeping interior speakers from clipping at high volume when you have subs to handle the lows. Quality bluetooth with separate adapter.

Cons: Hard to read in sunlight, lack of bluetooth integration when using accessory

Bought and installed same late last year to finally put some good tunes in my vehicle...Installation was easy, all instructions are clear and concise, no problems putting it in at all. Sound quality is fabulous with the speakers and powered sub I installed with same, I'd have given it 5 stars but I feel the ergonomics of same are a tad quirky, I miss not having the 6 preset buttons like a typical receiver (though I see much of the 2012 lineup from JVC now has preset buttons...I wonder if a faceplate from a newer model will fit my older rig ;) In JVC's defense, no one forced me to buy this unit, even without the buttons I felt the features were more than good enough to warrant my purchase of same, it's such a performer...clean powerful sound, and the HD radio tuner is worth it's weight in gold IMHO, the difference between HD and standard FM stereo is like night and day. Quirkiness aside, I'd still recommend this rig any day!

Pros: Great sound, superb display, easy install, HD tuner built in, an all around great performer.

Cons: Ergonomics are somewhat weird, no preset channel buttons.

Pros: Outstanding head unit to build a decent system.

Cons: The display could have been designed with more emphasis on bringing the beauty of it out(brighter).

Great sound. I love having the ability to match the back lighting to my vehicles dash lights and HD radio sounds superb. But, and this is a big deal, it's absolutely frustrating to use on a daily basis. You must hit the menu button first and then scroll to find every station preset. You even have to do this to turn the loudness on and off and to adjust the sub level. And these items are buried DEEP in the menus and are not easily accessible even when parked. Doing this while driving can be deadly. The crossover is very very limited with it's settings and I highly doubt the pre-outs give you 5 volts. It has some nice features but you can definitely tell where JVC cut costs on this unit and it becomes annoying over time. I wish I would have paid more, or just found a more convenient unit. There's no "coolness" factor using something this annoying.

Pros: HD radio. Color change. Easy to read in the sun light. Seems to be holding up in my Jeeps nearly outdoor environment.

Cons: Dangerous to use while driving. Very limited crossover and equalization. I'm not very fond of the cheap feel when reattaching the face plate but it seems to be holding up fine.

First, this is mounted in an Airstream travel trailer (RV) vs. in an automobile. This means that listening conditions are exceptional, no road or wind noise. I have the head unit driving 4 Sony XS-R1342 5¼" speakers and feeding an old Sansui 75 watt RMS X 2 amp connected to a Polk Audio 10" sub. It will absolutely blow you out of the trailer, but its reproduction of classical is beautifully smooth and even. Absolutely distortion, noise, or rattle-free. I have the sound from my 37" flat panel TV feeding the rear aux/Bluetooth inlet. Makes TV shows and movies sound great. A delightfully versatile system.

Pros: Plenty of power and great sound. Adjustable display is a nice feature. The FM reception is excellent, more stations than I pickup on any other FM tuner. The HD stations sound great, especially the local classical station station that just went HD.

Cons: No AM reception at all. Just squealing, sort of a constant "Songs of the Whales" effect. Not a big deal for me. AM is pretty much a wasteland anyway. Otherwise, no cons so far.

I replaced the single din unit in my 2004 Toyota Tacoma. I don't know why people leave their vehicle make and model off these reviews, but to me, it is one of the most important parts of the review. I like to do tons of research before I buy anything. I hate post-purchase dissonance and try to avoid it at all costs. For the price, this unit can't be beat. Crutchfield by far has the best prices, and this particular unit met all my requirements for the price. Installation was a breeze, and this is the first head unit I've replaced. I would recommend that you buy a pair of wire crimps. The installation took me 2 hours to do. Make sure you disconnect the neg. from your car battery before doing anything electrical with your car. Sound quality is amazing. I purchased this unit with the goal to replace the OEM speakers with component speakers and a separate subwoofer. This unit lends itself to this. I mainly play my music through my iPhone. You can control song/artist/playlist choices via the unit, but I found that it is much easier to use the iPhone for this. Some have complained that the layouts and controls are not intuitive. I agree that they are not, HOWEVER, this is to be expected of most single DIN units on the market today that try to maintain a sleek appearance and offer many options in a single DIN unit. Best bet? Read the owners manual. Overall, very satisfied with my choice.

I've had Nakamichi's, Denons, Alpines and Blaupunkts and this little JVC sounds better and cleaner with HD radio than all of them. The build is excellent with no cheap plastic and only downside would be the remote is small and not for large hands. That's it....

Pros: Sound quality of amp is incredible and sounds like a bigger, separate amp. No audible distortion and loud levels and easy to control bass and treble and midrange and SUB. I like the fact that HD Radio is built in and I can listen to various things as well as my IPhone 4 and control it with the remote and head unit that comes with the JVC. This thing sounds better than my Alpine and much cheaper.

Cons: Takes some getting used to layout and controls, but once you get used to it the layout makes sense. You have to avoid running off road and pay attention with manual in glovebox to consult a lot initially but once you get flows.

ChuckW from Omaha, NE on 11/7/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It plays music fine, but that is what you expect any of these aftermarket radios to do, plus I'm not a real audiophile so all the subtleties are probably lost on me. What I'm interested in is ease of use. After the initial honeymoon period of "ooh, look at the cool colors", I have to say this radio is not easy to get used to. It has a pretty harsh learning curve, which is much more diplomatic than my wife's assessment. The buttons are too small and close together on the upper left of the panel. Also, the all-in-one knob and menu button are too complicated. This is definitely not a radio you should try to change settings on while driving. More dangerous than texting! As far as pre-sets, just plan on sitting in your driveway with the manual in your lap. You'll get it done finally, then once done it is just a simple punch of a button (I guess, I've only programmed a couple of stations so far). I just miss the stock radio which had four buttons AM, FM, CD, Tape and then the only thing the volume button did was change audio. Why can't people leave that which works fine alone? However, the changing colors is cool at night and I do like the HD radio too.

Pros: The rear input for our aftermarket SiriusXM. For the past several years we've had to put up with a cassette adapter with the ugly cord hanging out the front. Now it's all gone. Also don't hear the cassette adapter running all the time.

Cons: JVC needs to have me or someone who translates better, write their manual. Whoever did it simply does not understand written english as well as they should. Also, the procedures to program are too difficult. Not impossible, just too difficult. Finally, the display in the window is just about impossible to see in the daytime, no matter what color or brightness is used.

    Very bad choice for me.....

Well, I had really hoped this would be the answer to my problem. When laid off my job of 23 years I had to buy some kind of transportation. After 5 months I got a new job (at half the pay) but decided to treat myself to a car stereo since all I had was a factory radio (no CD). The install was slick. BUT... This thing has TERRIBLE radio reception. The CD failed on my first unit so they sent me a 2nd. Still the radio reception is terrible! I cannot regularly get the most powerful AM station (KFI640 - Los Angeles). I called a Crutchfield tech, but he said when you have a combination of features, the radio suffers. I asked him to recommend a unit with an outstanding radio and he could not. The HD cuts in and out and is very annoying. I think I will pull this out, put it up for sale online and put my old factory radio back in !!! VERY BAD CHOICE. Crutchfield has great service, but that does not help me when I get such a crummy product.

Pros: The installation was easy, the wiring harness was perfect. I liked the "idea" of the product, radio, HD radio, USB input, CD player.

Cons: Terrible radio reception. Sent the first one back due to a bad CD player after a few weeks. No way you can see the display except at dark. Buttons so small it is hard to tell what they do.

For the money this a great receiver that has HD radio, iPod/iPhone control built in. I installed it in a 2003 Infinity G35 Sedan with the Bose system. Had to replace the head unit due to the ever so popular power drain issue. I did buy the additional bluetooth adapter KS-BTA100 so I could attach my iPod, my HTC cell phone and my wife's iPhone. All three work perfectly and the sound was surprisingly good. Only one will connect at a time and it prefers the last connected device as an FYI. Automatically mutes the music and plays a basic ringtone when a call comes in. Also used the provided wiring harnesses and they were spot on for the car. Axxess SWC was used to interface the steering wheel controls. It auto-programmed but he power button is now mute. Not a bother since I never turned off my radio anyway. Secondarily, the preset up/down is now scan up/down on the steering wheel. You can manually reprogram to be preset up/down but then they don't work in CD/iPod/etc. So I just keep them in scan mode. Biggest complaint is the four most used buttons, FF/RW track up/track down buttons on the far left aren't that tactile. In other words, you have a hard time just reaching down and going by touch like I use to do on my old JVC. They look nice but are very flat and smooth and feel just like the face round them.

I've been a big Alpine fan since the late 90s and I was originally wary of JVC because I'm not a fan of their TVs... I was very surprised when I got this guy installed and running. Everything just sounded so much better than before. This deck has some pretty big features tucked away within its settings that'll make everything sound amazing. It has a high pass filter for the in-car speakers so you can force ALL your bass to your subs and crank the volume up without the in-car speakers dropping highs for lows. Very good feature if you haven't installed an amp for in-car speakers yet. My only complaint is that the subwoofer level control is buried in the deck's menu. This is a minor complaint since I've been too lazy to run the amp's gain control yet. It should however be an easier setting to access while driving. ;)

Because I can never seem to get ALL the features I want in one unit (Wanted a rear USB). 1 problem w/ call to tech support, answer,......30 seconds, issue solved. Flawless tech support as always. Thanks Wayne ! Just another reason I only shop Crutchfield for all my electronics !

Nice specs, especially that 5v outputs. Delivers a much clearer sound that the factory reciever ever will. I have it powering component speakers up front, mid-driver rear, and a Sound OrdnanceT B-8PT sub(reviewed that also) in the cargo area. If you like lights, the demo setting offers fades into different colors (30 sec following no button/dial movement). Sunlight will make seeing the display very difficult, I have personally seen this with numerous after market recievers. Pairs great with a 4th gen IPOD touch. The kit that came with the product made a nice fit(using the frame work that came with the reciever, origanl with kit an exremely tight fit that would have required modifications).

Pros - Great features for the price. HD Radio and different display colors are a nice feature. Cons - Display not visable in direct sunlight (tried all colors). HD radio goes out under bridges, near power lines. Sound goes low-fi for approx 5 seconds. Buttons are very small, knob controls the volume/mute only. Overall these are minor issues for the price.

I replaced the factory deck in a 2001 BMW Z3 with this unit and I am very happy with it. The fit is perfect for the factory opening and the variable color for the controls allowed me to match the BMW orange dash lighting exactly. The sound is much cleaner and with the adjustable EQ settings you can really make a huge improvement in the overall sound especially in a convertible. I love the USB port and have already loaded over 300 songs onto a flash drive so I have hours of uninterrupted favorites. The HD Radio stations sound just as clear and clean as a CD. Installation instructions and wiring diagrams were very easy to understand. Did it myself in less that an hour. Next step will be to replace the factory amps and upgrade the small subwoofer to an 8" driver. I don't agree with other reviews about the controls being hard to use. Once you play with it for a while it is relatively easy to use. Great deck with nice features for the price. I highly recommend this unit.

Installed in a 03 4Runner with Tato for JBL Amplifier and SWI-Jack for steering wheel control. Installation was relatively straightforward, though the stereo jack on the SWI would not control this HU. Had to use the blue wire instead, but once connected it controlled the deck. For me the best features are the aux-jack on the front of the deck and the HD radio. Reception is pretty good most of the time, but we are very close to most broadcasters. Also love the color configuration - was able to match the dash display perfectly. Only drawback is that the illumination is weak during the day. Dash illumination display also doesn't control the HU display brightness. Otherwise sounds great and easy installation - only about 3 hours (though much of that was troubleshooting the steering wheel control snafu).

Crank the volume and this thing is awesome compared to the factory radio. Still tweeking some of the display stuff and settings which so far has been pretty easy to do. I give it a 5 because it does more and sounds better than I expected for the price. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The install was easy, the sound quality is excellent, the controls take a little getting used to but overall it's great. My only problem - I use a 32GB USB flash drive in the front connection. It has 118 folders (band names) and no subfolders. I have thousands of songs divided in those 118 folders. But when I hit Random All, it only seems to play one or two songs from each folder. I've had the radio for month now, and I consistently hear the same songs when on Random All. When I switch to just play all songs in the folder, it plays them all. So, it's not a formatting problem. The player sees all the songs, but somehow the random function keeps playing the same two songs in each folder. Example: I have one folder labeled Slayer. In there I have 6 full albums of mp3 files (not in subfolders, all under the Slayer folder). In the last month, I have heard "Piece by Piece" 5 times, and not one other Slayer song.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was forced into a new radio because I was using a cassette (!) adaptor to listen to my new XM radio, and the cassette mechanism was squealing terribly for months. Looking over the Crutchfield website choices (excellently presented) I settled on this radio. It was a good choice. It has good displays, fairly easy menu operation, high sound quality, many menu options, and is just complicated enough for serious users without being a burden. I bought it to connect XM radio and ipod and it works great; although I think using the USB not as easy as controlling the ipod directly; other reviewers have posted this comment as well. Price was reasonable too. Some questions on connections to my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee arose with regards to "illumination" and "dimmer" but a call to the help desk at Crutchfield was very helpful. HD radio is amazing, some AM stations are HD too and I have experienced no problems with reception. Lots of discussion online about displays being too bright/dark; this JVC is no problem. Buy this radio, don't see any reason why you would not. If you want XM probably better to buy outboard XM unit for easier control though; changing preset stations not a great feature on this box, only flaw I can find in it.

This is a very nice, feature-laden receiver. It has great reception on FM and HD radio, and the USB feature is very handy. The color change feature enabled me to match my dashboard lights, and was a major reason I chose this unit over others. My experience with JVC was a second. However, most of the buttons to access the great features are tiny, and I do not have large hands. I agree with other reviewers that larger, simple preset buttons are the thing I miss most about old car radios.

Upon receiving this unit I was impressed with the quality. Crutchfield's extra's are great. The radio gets good reception from large neighboring city 60 miles away. Menu options for eq, audio, color are great. Also, I read some reviews that said the display is not bright enough. I have a convertible and it is bright enough 90 percent of the time. Only when the sun glares right on it is it an issue. Sound quality is very good, very clear and the ipod interface is great. In fact that is mostly what I bought it for is the ipod interface and it does a great job of interfacing with it. My only complaint if there is one is that there are so many settings that if I have to unhook the radio, like say to hook up an amp or something or unhook the battery. The settings are stored in a way that they will be lost. It would be cool if I did not have to reprogram it.

I used the USB port often, especially on trips. A 16GB drive holds tons of tunes and is easier than shuffling CD's. The only negative comment I have to make is that the display is not bright enough on sunny days. I highly recommended this unit. 4 1/2 stars. My stock car speakers(Toyota Rav4) have never sounded better, I don't even think I need to replace them. I can't imagine how good this would sound with new speakers, maybe someday I will, but no need right now. Best upgrade I ever made and I have installed four receivers from Crutchfield. Love the HD Radio, you can preset HD stations with this radio. Haven't used the USB or IPOD yet, but I am sure I will. The display takes some manipulating, but I will figure it out eventually and get the right color, brightness, etc. As usual, Crutchfield was great, helping this techno-idiot through the installation. This JVC ARSENAL unit is great! I have a TOYOTA CELICA GTS. Installation was a breeze with CRUTCHFIELDS master instruction sheets. I tried CD's/HD Radio/and the USB slot. They all perform above my expectations. If I were to recommend a CD PLAYER in this price range this would be it. I have looked over other brands in this range, this by far is the best bang for your buck. *****READ THIS****** In the operations manual they state FRONT/REAR outputs are for a 4-channel amp. And SUB output is for MONO/BLOCK only. I guess there is a difference, because I hooked up 2 different good 2 channel amps to SUB OUT...and no sound?? After beating my head against the wall I tried my 2 channel amp on REAR OUTPUT and presto! LOUD BASS and CLEAR HIGH on my FULL RANGE BOXES. I thought SUB OUTPUTS were fried, they played only very very very inaudible.. I guess you may need a MONO/BLOCK amp for the SUB OUT like the manual says... I am happy though. I used a Y-Splitter on FRONT OUT for my four factory speakers, and REAR OUT goes to MY 2 CHANNEL AMP with FULL RANGE SUB BOXES. It works nice now.

Read through the installation instructions once when I first received my package, and the install went through without any problems. I had a couple of questions that were answered immediately by a Tech person, and when I powered up the system it worked the first time. The quality of the sound is great, as I expected it would be, considering the extra OEM Amplifier - which made the response, at least as good if not better to the Bose Unit that was installed from the factory. I am very satisfied that all the different features of this unit work perfectly and feel like I really got my money's worth with the package that the Crutchfield folks put together for me. I would definitely recommend this receiver to anyone looking for good performance and ease of installation.

This is a nice unit and does most of what I wanted. The sound is great. It has rock solid HD reception even in places where my old receiver would not get any kind of signal. It was worth if for that alone. I like the flexibility of having multiple sources, CD, Radio/HD Radio, Aux., iPod, USB stick and, with the optional adaptor, bluetooth streaming and hands free phone. A nice package for the price. I particularly like the ability to customize the display color. I matched it to the rest of my car's display colors. I also like having 18 FM presets. The cons: The buttons are very small. The iPod naviagtion in "head" mode is worthless. Control your iPod from your iPod. Don't waste your time with the unit's iPod navigation. I had hoped to dump all my music on one big USB stick but the unit will only recognize 255 directories. Not even close to the number of directories I have. There is no RDS (but if you have an HD signal not really an issue). Overall though, I would buy this unit again. If the unit in my other vehicle dies anytime soon I will likely put in another one of these.

    Great Upgrade

Dustin Blythe from Mishawaka, IN on 5/13/2011

I chose this based largely on a recommendation from a Crutchfield advisor. I was looking for a new receiver for my 2002 Mazda Protege that would give me the flexibility to receive both standard and HD Radio, play cds as well as my iPod and easily add satellite radio. This unit fits the bill. Not only did it fit, but it looks great. Matches the dash and I can customize the color scheme on the display and the buttons to either match my car's dash lights or another color. The sound quality is fantastic. I especially like it's iPod connectibility. I am using the synch cable in the built in USB port on the front and both the sound and functionality are superb. I dock a star for the radio presets. Stations are easy enough to save, but you have to cycle through all the stations to get to a particular one. Not a huge ordeal, though. Searching/scanning for stations is a little tricky, too, but again not a huge ordeal. Great unit overall. Like a home theater receiver in your car (sans dvd).

After removing my 5 year old pioneer premier unit, I was disturbed to find all of my sound in shambles. I had already turned all of the units features on (i.e, Loud, Pro EQ, High pass filter, tuned to full bass). I could not hear my subs. Come to find this little baby just need my component amp to be turned almost all the way down. What a nice thing to know that it wont create as much heat as before. Now I have tuned both amps (subs and component) and have the clearest sounding and hardest hitting system I have ever owned. I always swore by Pioneer head units and haven't owned a JVC since the mid 90's. After searching through all the pioneers and seeing that they don't have a single unit with a two year warranty anymore I bought this one. I am sure glad I did as it is a great unit. My only negative would be that it is a dust magnet. Buy it! for the price it cannot be beat.

After switching from the stock headunit, this JVC made my whole system came to life. The CD, iPod, AUX, Radio quality is crystal clear. The color match technology allowed me to match my dash and gauges perfectly. Even though the radio quality was already an upgrade over stock, the HD channels are so much better! The unit does a great job at switching to the HD signal too. It is seamless, continuous, and gentle. The customization you have for EQ settings, color, and everything else is amazing! The only bummer is I lose the stealthy rear AUX input because I will be installing the ASWC steering wheel integration unit shortly. I thought the remote would be a silly thing to have but it's totally cool when tailgating or using the car as a music source while outside! The signal is so crystal clear that I'm sure the 5 volt preamps are doing their job (this is one of the reasons I went with this particular model). I feel as though this would be the ultimate step for someone at any level. Love the six-channel outputs. It's what my amp takes and it just makes everything easier that way. The iPod interface (imo) was surprisingly good. Although possibly distracting while driving, the menu will stay there for a second while you look up or take a turn, so you don't have to keep getting back to where you were. All-in-all, I am extremely pleased. Crutchfield as always, was spectacular. The communication they have with their customers makes you forget you ordered online!

Dollar for dollar this unit is one of the best values going. You get plenty for your money, HD radio built in is great I tunes tagging is a huge plus. More importantly it looks and sounds incredible. I love the way it looks and it sounds great. I am glad that my Crutchfield advisor recommended this unit to me over some higher priced units.

Great buy for the money and unbeatable features!

I Just dont have time to write the book that would describe the performance of this headunit. With 5 volt rca outputs, you better be careful with the power nob because this thing make alot more power due to those high volt rca's. Very nice for having a 3 amp setup. And built in hd radio. A HD reciever runs around 100 dollars alone(non built-in ones). And im tired of payin for siruis Sat when it never or barely ever works due to rain, snow, and just about everything. And hd is awesome. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL

Over 20 years of buying higher end Premier units I needed a relatively inexpensive head unit. JVC got my attention for having the highest CES 2006 compliant amp, HD Radio tuner, USB, front and rear AUX inputs. Being my first JVC I was sceptical, but no longer. I'm thoroughly impressed and happy with the unit as well as Crutchfield's delivery, packaging, instructions and install gear. THANKS!!

    Great Unit !!!

Nice unit. Love the display color choices, love the sound. The buttons/controls are not intuitive, and difficult to see at night (this may have more to do with the observer than the unit). Love the rear aux input. Plugged in an external Bheringer sound card so I can plug my laptop into the car stereo and get iTunes through the system, and movies when parked... sweet! Can also listen to internet radio through the laptop via my Sprint Mobile Hotspot. All good, and love the unit... getting one for my wife's truck!

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The JVC Arsenal KD-AHD79 features a detachable face to deter theft. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

2-Line LCD: The head unit features a 12-segment, two-line LCD with adjustable color, brightness, and dimmer settings.

Variable Color LCD & Key Illumination: The JVC KD-AHD79 features 29 color presets for the LCD and button illumination. You can choose one of these color presets or select the ColorFlow mode which scrolls through all 29 color presets. Additionally, there is a User preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. The chosen color preset or custom color can be applied to the display panel and the backlighting for all the buttons except the Display, Brightness, & Eject buttons (they remain red). You can choose to use the same color for the LCD display and button illumination, or use a separate color for each one. You can also select a different color for daytime and nighttime in regards to the unit's LCD and button illumination.

Brightness: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC Arsenal KD-AHD79 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-AHD79 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-AHD79 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-AHD79 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-AHD79 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Pro EQ: The KD-AHD79 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Tone Pro EQ
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 khz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

5V/6CH Preamp Output: The KD-AHD79 is equipped with three pair of  5V preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front & rear preamp outputs offer balance/fade control and are designed to hookup to a full-range 4-channel amplifier. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading and designed to hookup to a mono-block subwoofer amplifier.

Built-in Crossovers: The JVC Arsenal KD-AHD79 features a built-in high-pass filter for the unit's front & rear speakers and a low-pass filter for the unit's subwoofer output.

    • High-Pass Filter: You can activate a high-pass filter (fixed) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers.
    • Low-Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer preamp output features a low-pass filter. In order to prevent high-frequencies from being sent to your system's subwoofers, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter to 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz.

Subwoofer Level: You can adjust the KD-AHD79's subwoofer level (0-8) independently from the head unit's main volume control for added bass volume.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

Built-in HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo, while FM digital will have CD-like quality with static free and clear reception.

Note: Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting, it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Text Display: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the JVC Arsenal KD-AHD79.

Analog Broadcasts: In addition to HD AM/FM stations, the KD-AHD79 can also receive conventional analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Digital/Analog Tuning: You can setup the KD-AHD79 to search both analog and digital radio stations, only HD Radio stations, or analog radio stations only.

Digital/Analog Presets: You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM digital/analog presets stations as presets (HD Radio multicast channels can also be preset). Presets can be set manually or automatically, using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM).

Mono Mode: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

IF Filter: You can also switch the analog tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-AHD79 can play MP3 (8-320 kbps)/WMA files (8-192 kbps) that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 255 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Track/Folder List: The Track/Folder List displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD, so you can easily access your music. The Track/Folder List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc. If the MP3/WMA disc contains a lot of tracks, you can fast search (+/-10 or +/-100) through the disc by turning the unit's control dial quickly.

Random/Repeat Modes: The JVC KD-AHD79 offers the following Repeat and Random playback modes for your audio CDs.

    • Repeat: Track Repeat (plays the current track repeatedly), Folder Repeat (plays all tracks of the current folder repeatedly), Off (cancels repeat function)
    • Random: Folder Random (plays all tracks of the current folder, then the tracks of the next folder in random), All Random (plays all tracks of the current disc at random), Off (cancels random function)

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust. The source will change to CD, and the disc will begin playback, even if you have another source selected at the time.

Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connectivity

USB Port: The JVC Arsenal KD-AHD79 features a front panel USB 2.0 type-A port behind a sliding cover for connection of a USB mass-storage class device. The USB port enables audio playback and control of MP3 (8-320 kbps)/WMA (8-192 kbps) audio files stored on a portable USB mass-storage class device formatted in FAT 12/16/32. The KD-AHD79 can recognize up to 255 folders (255 files per folder) and 65,025 total files. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3/WMA files (up to 60 characters).

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

iPod/iPhone Direct: The JVC Arsenal KD-AHD79's front-panel USB port also acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the USB/iPod cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. An additional iPod cable is available (469USBPOD, sold separately) so you can leave one at home and one in the car. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the JVC in-dash head unit.

iPod/iPhone Audio Playback: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's large music libraries to be loaded instantly to the JVC head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 98dB. The JVC Arsenal KD-AHD79 supports audio playback of music files, podcasts, and apps stored on your iPod or iPhone.

iPod/iPhone Control: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.

    • Music Browsing: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search your iPod/iPhone's music by Category (Playlist/Artist/Album/Song/Genre/Composer). If the selected category contains a high number of tracks, you can fast search (+/-10, 100, 1000, or 10000) through the music tracks in that particular category by simply turning the head unit's control dial.
    • Repeat & Random: The KD-AHD79 also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of your iPod/iPhone.

Note: You can listen to apps stored on your iPod touch or iPhone through the JVC head unit when controlling the iPod/iPhone via its touchscreen (cannot access apps via head unit control mode).

iPod/iPhone Display: The KD-AHD79 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information, regardless of control mode. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label.

iTunes Tagging: Using the head unit's iTunes Tagging enabled HD Radio, you can tag your HD music (up to 60 songs) while listening to the radio with your iPod/iPhone connected. When you hear a song you enjoy on your local HD Radio station, you only have to press the head unit's "Tag" button and the song's information will be saved to your connected iPod/iPhone. The saved songs will then show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the very next time you sync your iPod/iPhone to your PC. Then you just need to click, buy, and download the song you tagged directly from the Apple iTunes Music Store.

Note: iTunes 7.4 (or later version) is required to purchase tagged songs.

iPod/iPhone Charging: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone.

Note: If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.
