Our take on the JVC KD-AVX77

The KD-AVX77 wastes no space on its single-sized face — it's dominated by the 5.4" wide-angle touchscreen. The controls disappear when you're not using them, then light up automatically when your hand approaches the screen. You make all adjustments with a touch of your finger.

Excellent security, plus touchscreen iPod® control

The understated elegance of JVC's KD-AVX77 DVD receiver fits any vehicle's interior. Its El Kameleon security system presents a plain, black face without any buttons or knobs to the left of the screen — you make all adjustments with just a touch of your finger. The controls black out and disappear when you're not using them, then light up automatically when your hand approaches the screen.

First-class sound

Play the MP3, WMA, and AAC files you've burned to a disc or saved on a thumb drive. The powerful built-in amplifier and 24-bit digital-to-analog converter make the most of your music, and the 7-band equalizer lets you adjust a range of frequencies to create the perfect sound for your car's interior. If you're building a complete audio/video system, the 6-channel preamp outputs let you add amplifiers, subwoofers, and even a center speaker.

Movie theater on wheels

Watch DVDs on the widescreen display up front while you're parked, or connect a screen in the back so your passengers can watch while you drive. Dual-zone mode lets you enjoy your favorite driving music up front while they watch in back. And a built-in 5.1 surround sound decoder lets you hook up real movie theater surround sound in the back for a truly rewarding movie experience.

iPod ® and Bluetooth®

Built-in iPod controls keep your favorite playlists on tap, and you can even stream your iPod videos by adding an adapter. If you have a Bluetooth enabled phone, the receiver's built-in Bluetooth capabilities let you take your phone calls through the receiver while you keep both hands on the wheel.

Bluetooth note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

The iPhone connection wire was extra, and doesn't always work right. Sometimes I gotta turn off the unit to reset the USB. I think it's a bad wire.

This is a great head unit if you want video, USB connectivity, blue tooth, and CD/DVD in a single DIN. My car cannot accommodate a double DIN, or a flip out screen, so this JVC is perfect. Unfortunately JVC discontinued this unit. I also had some trouble getting video to play on the JVC from my iPhone. I called JVC directly and they were extremely unhelpful. I called Crutchfield and talked to Tom, and he helped me through the set-up. Crutchfield is truly a great company. My loyalty is secured.

Pros: Everything you could want in a non flip out screen single DIN

Cons: Small screen (should be obvious)

    Not Bad For A Single-DIN

    Great Looking and Great Sound

Nelson from Redding, CA on 9/16/2011

I put this in my Audi TT convertible. It fit perfectly, works great, and looks awesome. The Ipod integration is flawless and the bluetooth works great. I have it hooked up to a Kenwood 5 channel digital amp and have installed a new subwoofer. The connections worked great. This unit has 5v outputs, which allows me to turn the amp gain way down. This keeps the potential for distortion very low. The touchscreen is difficult to read during the day, but no more so that any other screen. But, at night it is incredible. The colors can be changed to match the interior exactly. Also, it can be toned down so that it matches the look of the car. There are no cheap looking flashing lights or fake chrome knobs to spoil the look. It just has a clean, quality look. And great sound. I absolutely recommend it.

5/5, if looks AND performance are important, buy this one. The touch screen is super clean, and doesn't make the dash of your car look cheap w/ a bunch of crazy lights and knobs. So many extras and options, you will not be disappointed.

    High Quality Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have purchased this high end receiver almost 2 years ago and it is by far the most quality receiver i have owned. In order for your vehicle to have great sound it starts with the receiver. Have a sub woofer with an amp built in plus an extra amp and quality speakers and presto!!! You got serious sound! The features on this receiver are fantastic and once you understand how to navigate into the system you can adjust the sound to your liking. The crossover and equalizer built in really fine tunes the sound to my liking. I recommend this receiver as i have had nothing but beautiful crisp power when i want it, anytime! The price hasn't changed in 2 years which tells you that this receiver is high-end quality piece! Spend the money and you will know what i am talking about! Cheers!

Very nice After market Cd Player. I installed it in my BMW X3 and it came out pretty clean! I took advantage of the ipod integration by running the USB port to a iphone docking mount. I also am going to install the Steering Wheel Control interface once it gets delivered. Pretty simple install with all the correct mounting, and wiring kits... All the options are very convenient and make for a much safer and upgraded ride sound system. Operation is very user friendly, and I would recommend it for anyone looking for a new Cd Player!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm looking to replace the AVX77 after just 4 months use. The hardware is high quality, the sound is very nice, and the unique single-DIN full-face screen has a lot of potential to make this a terrific car stereo. It's just the software that I don't care for. There are lots of options in the setup menus, but however I set them, I end up with a screen that is cluttered, unattractive, and functionally awkward to the point that I feel unsafe trying to select an iPod playlist while driving. The iPod interface is what I use most, and its lack of the usual track progress bar is annoying. Album covers use only 2/3 of the available screen height, and they alternate with track data rather than displaying simultaneously. Even with the nice wide screen, track data is limited to about 20 characters per line, and the data display is not customizable. Meanwhile screen space is wasted on logos and hard-to-press soft buttons, some of which don't even work and most of which belong on a sub-level screen. The photo wallpaper feature does not seem very practical to me since text is hard to read on top of most photos (although a digital photo of a blank section of your dash might be a solution to the otherwise harsh background color choices). Ideal main screen IMO: max height album cover (more legible) next to generous space for customizable track data; most of screen button-free and available for expanded finger-motion controls intended to be done blindly with eyes on the road.

This deck is remarkable. I have had and installed Kenwood, Pioneer, VR3, Sony, and a JVC a few years ago that I didn't care for. I decided to take a chance on JVC again after reading some of the reviews. I am glad I did. You have to be tech swavvy to operate this deck, so be prepared for that. Bluetooth works great. The buttons do hesitate sometimes when you tap them but the key is to push for a second. You cant just tap sometimes. However wasn't enough to give it 4 stars, 4 and a half maybe, but they didn't have that option. The search problem one reviewer was having wasn't a big deal to me because I only load about 200 songs at a time on a usb drive. However if you have thousands don't even think about this deck unless you operate it from your ipod. Sound quality is outstanding and this deck gives you a lot of control over your music adjusments. This deck is loaded with options. If you do decide to get it I hope you enjoyed it as much as I have. Crutchfield as usual sent everything I needed for the install. I have been shopping with crutchfield since 1993 and as usual I am pleased with there service. By the way I have a 2005 dodge ram quad cab I installed it in and it looks great.

Holy Cow! Seven Years of Pain Gone

Land Rover Discoveries Look Li from Grosse Pointe, MI on 8/16/2010

The Disco base head unit is to audio the way fish 'n' chips is to haute cuisine. After seven years of underwater midrange, I woke up, grabbed a bagel and coffee at a local shop, got back in the car and started 'er up. The front driveshaft fragged my transfer case like an IED. Fifteen hundred dollars later, it drives like new. Which is like saying your new girlfriend is America Ferrera. But it became clear that the Disco was going to last a few years. I decided I'd suffer back surgery caused by the rock-hard suspension; but no way could I take a second more of that sound. After careful research ("Oh, I can only get a one DIN unit? Let's buy that flashy one."), my life has changed for the better. The KD-AVX77 not only has a really cool name but it gave new life to some pretty good speakers that my head unit kept hidden. Now I have more punch than a UFC champ, sweeter highs than any drug and a taut midrange, unlike my middle-age body. I disagree with reviewers who don't like the iPod controls on the unit. They're simple and load quickly. My iPhone 3GS doesn't transfer its phone book, but I only have three friends not including my parole officer. One of the coolest features is buried under five layers of menus. It's the "Subliminal Messaging Center." It gets me more play than the three wolves moon shirt. Okay, now I'm kidding. But it really is a good unit.

    Great deck

apache19 from Carlisle, PA on 8/5/2010

This is a great deck! I replaced an Alpine system with this and have never been unhappy with the decision. Video is clear, sound is great, controls are generally easy to use. This is the first deck that I have owned that has iPod controls built in so maybe I'm critical but i find it easier to control the iPod from itself rather than with the head unit. That is the only drawback I have with the unit.

I just had this head unit installed in a 2006 Electraglide Classic. Yes I installed this head unit on a motorcycle, this JVC is awsome cranks out clear quality sound and works well with the IPOD. The blue tooth is extra for a motorcycle but it works perfect when I am riding down the road.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit as a controller for an iPhone/iPad-based system, and it is the poor integration with those devices that is the reason for the 2-star rating. What does it do well? It plays DVDs and the screen works well enough for a single DIN unit. The tuner also picks up FM signals better than my OEM stereo, which is an unexpected bonus. It doesn't work with the iPad, though it does work with the iPhone 3G and iPhone 4. You can pipe audio from the iPad (or iPhone) through the unit using Bluetooth, which is actually pretty nice, but you lose the ability to control the device from the head unit. The problem is -- controlling an iPod/iPhone/iPad from the head unit is tedious. There is no good way to navigate through songs, playlists, or albums, and that means you wind up using your iPod to navigate songs, which defeats the purpose of using the USB port with the *expensive* cable you need to integrate the iPod via the A/V dock connector. If I had to do it all over again, I'd buy a different unit with better iPod integration.

Anonymous from CA Bay Area on 5/10/2010

This unit rocks, the user interface (touch screen) is A+ and the 7-band EQ rocks, Blue tooth works really well with my iphone and itunes playlist selection and playback is great. Make sure you buy the iphone video and audio USB cable when ordering. The unit is great and for single din its probably the best I have seen out there. DVD playback is amazing and the full screen works wonders.

    Solid unit, nice touch/flick features

Anonymous from Seattle, WA on 12/1/2009

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit works well, and was a solid replacement for my old Alpine unit. The instructions were clear. The wide screen is a nice touch. The feature I'm most pleased with, which was unexpected, is the flick gesture feature: you can touch anywhere on the screen and flick up or down to change the channel, flick side to side to change the track, and scroll in a circle to change the volume. This is a great way to allow operation of the unit while driving without needing to look at the screen. That said, the recognition of gestures is a bit spotty. So oftentimes I have to repeat the gesture a few times before it registers. If it recognized gestures more consistently, I would rate this five stars. I haven't used any of the DVD or USB features yet, so I can't speak to those. I've attached the JVC HD tuner with no problems. Integration was easy.

    Totally Awesome Deck !!

y2krebel from Las Vegas, Nevada on 7/1/2009

This deck does just about everything, there are only a couple of things I wish it did that it does not.. DIVX support would have been fantastic, and also optional navigation system. I got this mostly for bluetooth support which it does flawlessly, streaming music works very well, I am told when talking to people over the bluetooth that it sounds fantastic. There is no way to put names in for phone numbers manually, you need to transfer phonebook using the phone itself, I have an Iphone which does not do that YET !! Also with the Iphone you cannot control the music over bluetooth yet except to pause and play.

    Sounds good, but...

Greendot from McKinney, TX on 6/30/2009

First, the fonts are horrible. Most of the unit has well designed pre-rendered fonts. The problem is the fonts used to display menus or song information. They are old and do not mix with the rest of the interface. Second, you cannot search for songs on the DVD/USB. If you try and cheat by putting all your songs in folders organized by artist, it only shows you folders that have music, so the organizational folders are not displayed. Third, the folder/file navigation is retarded. You get a 3x2 grid of to see folders and files and a horizontal scroll bar to slide around to get different groups of 6. The max file/folder count on a DVD/USB filesystem is around 5000 files and 255 folders. Navigating all of that through a 3x2 grid is painful. If they had paid attention and put in a better GUI engine, anti aliased readable fonts, they could have presented a much better interface. It doesn't even play playlists or allow random order across folders. Fourth, there is a audible gap between songs when played on the DVD/USB. In a lot of the reviews, you see will that it is 0.5s and "not bad". Most of the time this is true. But if you have anything that was intended to flow from song to song, you're out of luck. It isn't always 0.5s. Sometimes it is 1s or 1.5s, even on the USB. I didn't buy a cheap stick either. I bought a very fast 8GB stick (to cut down on PC to USB transfer time). If I could do it over again, I would not buy this deck.

The touch screen control is niiiiice. I have the 30 gig ipod full & yes when u first start the car it takes 10 sec before u hear music, but come's thousands of files & once it's on there might be a half sec delay. The slide bar makes browsing ur music fast as u can jump right where u want just by touching the screen. I was skeptical about the ipod adapter as its output is a basic composite & sound quality is VERY important to me. Didn't matter, the 24 bit DAC produces beautiful sound quality. It made poor quality tracks sound way better compared to before & high quality tracks sound amazing. I have polk audio 5.25 & 6.5 components through the Rockford T400-4 & a P3 10" sub powered by the Rockford P300-1. The sound is absolutely incredible, I mean wow. For such a wide screen the distortion is minimal & if u don't care about the picture on the entire screen, u can easily change it while watching the video; there are 6 or 7 different picture sizes. The appearance is customizable to match the inside of ur car. I have a 03 accord w/ orange & red lights & it looks GREAT w/ the factory dash. Bluetooth is nice; someone calls, the music is paused & caller id lets u know who it is. W/ one touch I can answer, ignore, switch lines, dial, redial, etc. If ur teetering on the edge because of cost like I was, don't worry. I am more than satisfied w/ this unit; very customizable in combo w/ built in Bluetooth & AMAZING sound & video I have no complaints.

I finished installing this head unit in my convert. BMW a few weeks ago this is a high end system with Focal KP fronts and rears with Focal KX27 sub. w/ false floor amp rack. I love the flat screen w/ no knobs it looks so cool and different from other decks. I had the JVC KD-AVX44 but it wasnt compatible with the iphone. So I couldnt wait when the AVX77 came out. After I installed it I was very happy with how fast the iphone was connecting to audio and video. I was a little mad when I bought the new JVC U-30 A/V cable because the JVC U-20 cable worked just the same. I really liked the way JVC made it so you can find the the songs and artists much much faster and easier you can now just slide your finger and jump to anywhere you want on your iphone and the connection is 3 times faster than the AVX44. The HD Radio works great w/ HD 300 reciever. Lots of great features with this HU. The full touch screen works very good. I'm glad they changed the volume adjustment JVC made it nice having the + and - so you can adjust it while configuring the settings. very nice!!. I really love this AVX77 looks great in my car. SO IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE U-20 cable you dont need the U-30 to get A/V and artwork. !! Even though I only used the JVC AVX44 for 1 1/2 months this new AVX77 HU was a great upgrade everything works so much faster and easier and sounds better. w/ no whining noises at all very clean sounding.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I previously owned the KD-AVX33 and loved it. After it was stolen, I waited for about 2 months sans radio for the AVX77 to be released. I'm glad I did, but miss some of the features of my previous unit. The Hands-on Research incorrectly states that the remote is full function. For instance, you cannot navigate the Setup menu, nor the List menu with the remote. Unless I'm missing something. I've only had it installed for about 2 days now, but there's no button on the remote to get to the Setup Menu, as there was with the AVX33 and once in, any directional press on the remote, changes the station or the volume and takes you out of the Setup menu. The display is beautiful and more usable than I thought it would be. The full width option does cut off some of the picture, but not that much and doesn't seem distorted. When you plug a USB drive in it auto switches to the USB which is nice. Audio quality seems better than the AVX33. I had gotten rid of the alternator whine with the AVX33, but it's back and louder with the AVX77. Bluetooth phone-you have to use the screen to dial numbers, you can't (again) use the remote. I get that it's a touch screen, but I feel it's easier to keep my eyes on the road when I can memorize the buttons on the remote. iPod-I was able to use my 5th Gen video cable with an iPhone, but didn't get any song info in Head mode. Was able to play video, but had to use iPod mode.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed this unit in my 2000 Corvette coupe and not totally happy. The install kit I got has some issues. The wiring harnness adapter isn't correct for a vette and the dash trim panel interferred with the tilting of the face plate. All concerns were easily overcome. Now for the unit itself. Really neat functions but it lacks some things I thought a high end unit would have. When using the radio function my other radios in my truck and suv all show more information like the station name, song title and artist for most channels. You can't change the size of the information on the screen. The numbers and wording are way to small. The display will go to wallpaper and show only the time and not what station your listening to. Iphone works great for music, haven't set up phone function yet.

    Just Enough Video

Lokide from Buffalo, NY on 5/16/2009

Just purchased this head unit and installed. I was a bit hesitant originally, but an very pleased overall. Even with the factory speakers in my Malibu Maxx SS the sound quality is outstanding. The video is clean and crisp, and Bluetooth works AMAZING. Streaming Video, Calls, and Music right from my Cell Phone. There are tons of options on sound fields and presets bringing it all together. The video screen may not be full fold out, but in my opinion, for this setting just enough without going overboard. Very Good head unit overall, if you don't want a full foldout screen and single DIN this is the one. Crutchfield support in ordering was outstanding, they made the process easy, and even assisted in saving me some cash on accessories I would have ended up not needing to make this unit work.
