JVC KDR-520 CD receiver
Your iPhone® is many things — it's a music player, a movie viewer, a camera, a phone, and your constant companion. And the KDR-520 is well-suited to let you enjoy your iPhone when you're in the car. Once you've connected your iPod or iPhone to the handy front-panel USB slot, you can use the receiver's driver-friendly controls to access and enjoy your playlists. You can also plug in a USB drive loaded with digital files, and scroll through your tunes that way. Either way, you'll get the superior sound and functionality only a direct USB connection can offer.

Extra inputs
The KD-R520 features two auxiliary inputs, one on the front panel and one in back. This way, you can hook up a more permanent source, like a Dock & Play satellite radio, to the rear input, while leaving the convenient front input for connecting your iPod® or another MP3 player. You can load up a CD with MP3 and WMA files, too — it's easy to fit several albums on a single disc that way.

Complete control over your sound
JVC packs the KD-R520 with a strong built-in amp and a 3-band parametric EQ, so you can dial in the perfect tone to match your car's interior. A built-in high-pass filter lets you trim the low bass from your speakers, allowing them to run at peak efficiency. Two sets of preamp outputs send a clean signal to your amps. You can even switch the rear preamp outputs to subwoofer mode, then use the subwoofer level control for on-the-fly changes.

KS-BTA100 Bluetooth adapter
The handy KS-BTA100 Bluetooth adapter lets you answer incoming calls and place outgoing calls with compatible phones — all without having to fumble around for your cell phone. You can also stream music from compatible devices — use the dedicated keys to play your tunes.

Setup is easy. Just plug the KS-BTA100 into stereo's rear auxiliary input, then mount it in a convenient spot. Once it's connected, it only takes a few minutes to pair up your phone, and you'll be on your way to safer driving, talking with both hands on the wheel and keeping your eyes on the road. If your phone has voice recognition dialing, you'll even be able to dial your favorite numbers just by saying a name.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

I installed this radio in my 98 Toyota Avalon xls with the 7 speakers coupled with kicker subs and it sounds great probably too loud cant go more than 5 on the volume dial. It was easily installed by some professional car audio guys in Philly and they did a great job and it cost me way less than when i took it to pepboys to see if it could be installed. .

Pros: it plays various sources that's a great plus, Bluetooth streaming and calling.

    Cons: haven't found one yet.

EXCELLENT UNIT WITH USEFUL FEATURES! Bluetooth cellphone hands-free feature is very easy to setup and works great as advertised! Now I am able to make phone calls, hear the other end loud & clear, and still be able to keep my hands on the wheel (except for emotional or long, complicated conversation, you've been warned - pull over and continue). In addition to the above, a noticeably better sound quality than stock unit, especially BASS BOOST!!! And I have to disagree with someone who posted that the sound by this receiver is not able to overcome the sounds of the road & highway. I often use the BASS BOOST and always am able to hear my musics loud & clear! In conclusion, I never installed any car stereo receiver before and was still able to complete the mission without any damages to my car. All you gotta do is carefully follow all the instruction, including always unplug your car battery FIRST, and you'll be fine! I will have to disagree with someone who crossed wire here. So, always check whether or not you have received from Crutchfield the correct instruction for your car model.

The stereo sounds great. It puts the factory stereo to shame. Very easy to install and the Bluetooth works great!

Pros: Bluetooth was included in the price. It works great. Clear sound on the entire deck.

Cons: The volume knob could use an edge or a rubber ring on it. No normal presets, however it is not too difficult to use!

    Great for what it is.

I bought this for my girlfriend because her stock unit wasn't pulling its weight. I chose this one specifically for the Bluetooth audio streaming and hands free. Both work great and she has been nothing but ecstatic with the end result. Highly recommended

Pros: Great quality, Bluetooth streaming, relocatable Bluetooth control remote,

Cons: Can be confusing to navigate menus

This is a really great unit at an outstanding price! This unit appealed to me because of the cost, which includes bluetooth! It was an easy install, great sound, has ipod controls, and bluetooth paired easily. I love it!

    Pros: Great bluetooth for price!

Cons: Color display is bright red. Cannot change color.

I am very happy with the jvc raido. I have had a couple kenwoods, Alpines and jvc's in the past. My favorite being the old jvc Kameleon head unit. It was easy to hook up the bluetooth and get working. It works a lot better Then i thought it would. Bt (bluetooth) audio works great and as for the usb charger on Front of the unit even better. This is a great purchase for anyone not looking ro spend A lot of money but end up with a great result.

Pros: Bluetooth, bluetooth audio streaming, usb charger on front of radio. A good amount of Control on the unit for your iphone.

Cons: Not enough control of your iphone from the portable Remote for the unit. I wish it had the menu button on the remote. It is hard to drive while searcing threw your artists, playlists etc using the controls on The radio not on the remote.

I bought this stereo mainly for the Bluetooth because driving a standard can make phone calls tricky! After owning it for about a month, the Bluetooth device began acting up. Not long after, it completely quit connecting to any mobile phone. I have yet to have it replaced but will be doing so shortly! Hopefully this is just another case of a bad egg but we shall see.

Pros: Bluetooth, USB, auxiliary, CD, simplicity

    Cons: No presets, broken Bluetooth

Yes, I gave this product 5 stars across the board, I'd never installed a car stereo before and while this particular stereo will probably never show up on West Coast Customs, to me it's nothing short of space age. I've always just stuck with whatever stereo came from the factory with the car and at 50 years old remembering when 8-track was high tech to now be able to talk on my iphone and play music from my iphone through my car stereo without ever hooking up a wire???? Hell yeah, 5 stars!! The sound quality far exceeds that of the factory stereo and the ease of installation far exceeded my expectation.

Pros: Ease of installation and use, superior sound quality to factory stereo, bluetooth operation very simple no complaints so far.

Cons: Have yet to stumble any cons.......................

    Werks Fore Mi

Mike from T'ville, va on 2/18/2012

Never used bluetooth before so I thought what the heck...go for it. I am impressed with the clarity. I was actually talking loud when I first used it (didn't think the mic was that sensitive) and the person asked me why I was shouting. The mic is mounted about 2 feet away and I can use my "inside voice." A lot of reviews say the lights are too bright. Don't understand that one. There is a day and night setting. The night setting kicks in when lights are turned on and can take the brightness down quite a bit. Gave it a one star for "Coolness Factor." What is a coolness factor anyway? That type of review is kind of pointless (unless you're like 11 or something). Like most everyone else, the volume knob is a little on the small side but not a major issue. Sound is good for stock speakers but I'll add an amp and small sub so I can remove the low end from them.

    Pros: Price

Cons: Too much push this, push this, push this just to adjust bass, treble, etc.

by far the easiest install i have encountered-have bought many from crutchfield.

Pros: easy install. good service from crutchfield. price. bought specifically for ipod use.

Cons: use of features-small lettering-not good for 50's crowd needing cheater glasses. unsafe to even change treble or bass while driving due to difficulty in use. had to program while sitting in driveway & go w/ that.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit really improved on sound quality coming from the factory speakers from a 98 Saturn Wagon. Bought this for 2 fold purposes and was not disapointed. The bluetooth adapter sounds comparable to a factory installed phone system on my newer car and the extra watts and improved circuitry are a huge improvement over the factory unit that was replaced. It was nice to call and get some quick advise from a friendly technician as well. Install was easier that anticipated. Programming requires focusing, even for a 22 year year who is the happy recipient of this unit.

    2006 Toyota Highlander
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was an excellent purchase from Crutchfield. I installed it on 2006 Toyota Highlander without any issues. I was able to route the Bluetooth adapter cable all the way around the windshield, left column and under dashboard right to the receiver. The cable was only slightly visible in a couple of places. I called Crutchfield tech support a couple of times to makes sure i wire the harness correctly, they were very knowledgeable and there was no wait time. The instructions manual provided was helpful and i was able to do the whole install in less than 3 hours (including routing adapter cable and wiring harnesses). My wife was thrilled about the upgrade and loves the interface. BT adapter works great, connects automatically and sound quality is very good. Receiver is a very good one, we like the dynamic EQ setting, makes really powerful sound.

Pros: Positioning of BT Mic to where you want in your car (for much better communication), great sound quality, tech support, overall easiness of the installation

Cons: When using USB flash drive the menu doesn't allow browsing at the same hierarchy level, instead it would drill down to the sublevels even if you don't want. E.g. i you have Artist 1, Artist 2, etc and you have Album 1, Album 2, Album 3 in the Artist 1 it would browse as following: Artist 1 -> Album 1 -> Album 2 -> Album 3 - > Artist 2. It is not convenient if you have more than 1 sublevel as it makes it confusing. It is the best to use 1 sublevel structure only for this receiver.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this mustly for the blue tooth I put it in my 1982 GMC pick up whitch as you can see is very old and not very quiet in the cab i have tried the ear blue tooth and could hear very good so when I saw this at crutchfields I thought I would try it so glad I did It works GREAT !!!!! threw the car speakers I can put it as loud as I need to. The person on the other end of the phone does not know that I'am hands free most of the time people say they hear an echo but not with this. I don't normally write reviews but I felt I had to for this one, also I was very happy with the radio it self it sounds Great. As for crutchfield you can NOT go wrong they send you everything you need to install and they are always just a phone call away Great job Crutchfield. I did give 3 stars to Ease of use because of the amount of buttons that need to be pressed to set your presets and to get to the sound you want but if you take your time and read and set it up you should not have to touch it again, if you listen to the radio alot and change staition alot this could be a bit of a problem but in my case I use my satilite radio and my cd's and the thumb drive so this is not a problem.

Pros: This radio package is first a great buy the blue tooth works great and the radio it self sounds Great

Cons: May be for the time set up alot of buttons you have to press

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had this head unit for a few weeks now and everything seems to work great. Bluetooth connects flawlessly with my iPhone 4S. USB and Bluetooth streaming music from my iPhone works great, except that when using the bluetooth, the volume is not as high or loud as if you were to play the CD, USB or the AUX. The remote is kind of useless because you kind of need to point it to the unit. The volume knob on the radio is poorly design because if you have lotion on your fingers, it is slippery to turn the volume. Overall, it's a great buy!!

Pros: Bang for the buck. Bluetooth works great with my iPhone 4S. Good features. Simple and easy to use

Cons: Volume knob hard to turn; too smooth to turn. Remote is semi-useless. Have to actually point at the radio for it to work.

Overall fantastic unit. My biggest complaint with most aftermarket units is how bright the displays and buttons are. Thankfully this one is much more subtle and isn't a distraction at night. Bluetooth audio and phone quality are great! Clear and crisp sound and easy to use! Best bang for the buck Bluetooth head unit!

Pros: Not too bright. Clear bluetooth.

Cons: Bluetooth mic and control is a little bulky depending on where it's mounted.

    1997 Honda Accord EX
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When my ipod was stolen from my car it seemed like a good time to upgrade from my 10+ year old aftermarket stereo to something that I could use with my smartphone. I did some research, both on smartphone forums and on car forums and this one came up with good reviews on both for playing music via BT as well as having good BT call quality. First let me say that the quality of the sound via bluetooth was immediately a big upgrade from the FM transmitter quality I was using with the ipod. This pleased me immediately. Other than that the sound quality as a whole is pretty average. The stereo does not have a lot of customizable options that I am used to from my old Pioneer. Even so, the difference I'm experiencing just from not having the FM feedback is great. CD to CD the old Pioneer still takes it with all of my personalized settings (even if it did refuse to give my cd back). The bluetooth calling is simply great. The sound coming out of the speakers sounds great and the sound coming out on the other side sounds great even with the heat blasting and the car engine blaring. Have not tried with the windows down yet. The BT connection is something that needs to be troubleshot on occasion, but tends to just need the stereo turned off and then on again. Has yet to terminate connection once established. Overall, when you consider that the stereo WITH THE BT ADAPTER INCLUDED was less expensive than the average bluetooth adapter this is the best value I've seen.

Pros: Very inexpensive if you're looking for quality bluetooth. Bluetooth works great with music & calling.

Cons: Volume nob is a bit slick. Not going to give you the sound quality or customization that you'd find in a higher end model.

Cons: Volume control knob hard to grasp.

All in all this unit is very good, it went in easy and sounds very good. A markable improvement to the stock radio. Crutchfields package and instructions were excellent. The only drawback and it is a drawback is the controls and the setup. THey are clunky and not intuitive. All of the buttons you need to use are lumped in the far left corner. Setting the presets and then using them requires digging out the manual each time. IF you can live with this definetly buy the unit.

Pros: Easy installation, receiver has very good reception, Bluetooth is excellent

Cons: Have not been able to set the brightness of the illumination for day/night. It stays bright all the time. Most likely I am not aware how to set it properly. I will the buttons that are illuminated were a different color than red. Blue or green would be less distracting at night.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was most concerned with how the quality of phone calls and Bluetooth streaming worked, and how easy it was to make it work. It was basically a piece of cake. The sound quality is very good, no complaints at all. I love the BT adaptor and how you can place it where you want it, making the sound quality and the ease of making/answering calls works. It works quickly and it pairs nicely with both my phone and my wifes without having to unpair or anything. I don't care for the red color, but you can control the brightness pretty easily so it's not overbearing.

Pros: Sound quality, ease of using bluetooth

Cons: Red color, doesn't include double-sided tape for the adapter.

So simple to install and the extra free kits from Crutchfield worked perfectly with my 2002 Ford F-150 dash. The wireless bluetooth is awesome with my Iphone. My kid sits in back and plays the music through the system with NO wires! The bluetooth phone sounds and works perfect as well. I don't use the USB port so no comment on playlists and using the controls. I do plug in my Sirius radio to the front aux and it works great. The rear aux has the bluetooth option plugged in. I have 4 pioneer 5 x7's and a sub on the floor and this baby cranks! I really don't play with all the controls that much once I set everything so not sure how easy they are to use on a daily basis. Overall for the price this stereo rocks!

Pros: Easy to install, bluetooth options work great.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great little receiver and the value is excellent. A local retailer had it for about less, but when you added the USB adapter, installation kit and wiring it would have been over $200. So far the only downside I have noticed is the display could be brighter for during the day and the red buttons are too bright. And I can't say enough about Crutchfield's support. After I got it installed, there was no sound. Their tech support spent 45 minutes with me on the phone analyzing it and he determined that I didn't report the model of my car correctly so the amps in the doors weren't turning on. He told me the relay I needed to install to bypass the system that turns on these remote amps and instructions on how to do it. I never would have figured it out without his help. Very professional. Heard the same story about good service from my friend who recommend Crutchfield to me. He was right.

    Pros: Value, Crutchfield support

Cons: dim display, red buttons too bright

I was hesitant to buy online because I have never installed a stereo before, but installation was simple and easy. It only took me two hours and everything works and looks good. The bluetooth works great for streaming music and making calls.

    Pros: Amazing Deal, good product.

    Cons: No HD radio upgrade.

    good deck for the price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo is nothing crazy or surprising, but has good sound quality and the bluetooth feature is awesome. I love it. I do have to press a couple buttons more than I am suppose to when a call comes in while listening to music, but I don't care, I can hear the person perfectly and they can hear me. No feedback, no echo, awesome. Quick tip, you'll have to hold "Menu" down for a few seconds to access the full menu and turn the Rear Aux to "On" to activate the Bluetooth, otherwise you'll be frustrated wondering why it isn't working. :-)

    Pros: Bluetooth

Cons: The plastic casing that comes with it is pretty impractical. You can put CDs in it, but it is so thin and so deep that you can't get to small things that you put in it if you have even medium sized hands.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this for myself for Christmas for my old Bonneville. I wanted an easy way to get good clean music through Bluetooth, and this works great! Use the bluetooth audio in my commute just about everyday. Sound is clean and good and the bluetooth works great for telephone calls, Siri on the iphone, and playing music and speech. I don't use the USB plugin very often as I prefer the bluetooth. It is nice that it charges, but set to Ipod mode, it starts playing something as soon as I plug it in, even if I was already playing something else... Maybe I don't understand how it works on the USB. Overall I am extremely pleased with the purchase and the installation and a quick clarification call to Crutchfield was easy and worked perfectly. Crutchfield support is great!

Pros: Bluetooth, easy installation, great price

Cons: Ummmm... I don't know how the USB works? This is a great unit considering the price and having bluetooth.

    Love it

This is the way to go if your funds are limited like mine.Simple to hook up easy to use step by step set up for all uses, such as clock, sound dynamics, tuner reception. You wont be disappointed. The tech service at Crutchfield are EXTREMELY knowledgeable and helpful if you should have a problem when installing it in your dash board. The fit was perfect everything matched, all the factory car stereo plugs plugged right into the plugs provided. It couldn't possibly get any easier then they make stereos now as apposed to the late 80's.5 star 100% satisfied.Highly recommended to all in search of quality.

Pros: Easy instillation, great for the money.

Cons: Cons are now i want to really upgrade the rest of my system to match the awesome JVC receiver. In time i plan on it through crutchfield cause everything is hassle free.I can't find any negatives on this product.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice sound, lots of EQ adustments in the pro EQ menu. Select hi pass, low pass, bandwidths for the EQ etc. The wired bluetooth adapter has a very long cord and thus can be snaked to the desired location if you are willing. It sounds really good. I expected lots of road noise, but it cancels that out with my phone. Most do not realize I am using it versus just the phone itself. The control buttons are too small for my large fingers while in motion, but the remote in my lap makes up for it. I really enjoy having the music cranked up and yet my phone calls are never missed - the music stops, the phone rings, and I press one button to answer or you can have your phone set up to auto answer. I would buy it again for the price and from Crutchfield for the extra installation items included free

Pros: Great bluetooth phone adapter. Good sound. Lots of adjustable settings.

Cons: Small track select button, clock does not stay on unless radio is on. This model DOES not have selectable colors but it is not advertised as having them - but some seem confused in that regard.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once you work with it a while and find your way around in the settings they are not too bad. The stereo itself has a fairly impressive sound quality and very impressive for the price. My sons dvd player cost over 6 times as much and the bluetooth quality of his cant touch this deck. I bought this for a work vehicle and if your are wanting to retain quality sound but gain better than factory bluetooth this is for you. One issue so far. I keep losing my rt side channels. Not just the rt frt or rt rear both at the same time. I hit a bump and they both come on. I am going to recheck all connections but it sounds like a bad faceplate connection.

Pros: Sound quality of both the stereo and the bluetooth / styling for the price

Cons: rt side channels keep quitting, settings could be a little easier with a couple more buttons.

Overall a very nice unit. Install, thanks to all the free install gear from Crutchfield, was a breeze. The Bluetooth Adapter has a nice long cable that allows for a multitude of mounting options and works well in phone mode, haven't tried streaming audio yet. I installed the radio in my wifes car for the Bluetooth, CD, and Ipod functionality. So far, so good. Wife gives it two thumbs up. I do wish I had chosen the model with the variable color display, this one does not have it and the default RED color is so intense that it completely obscures the labels on the buttons left of the control knob. Reducing the brightness helps somewhat, but a "Cooler" color like BLUE or GREEN would probably have been a better default. My only other gripe is the silver control knob. This attractive dial is slick as polished steel, however, that's not the most desirable quality in a control know you use to adjust nearly every feature of the radios operation. Some form of tactile enhancement on that knob would be greatly appreciated. Everything else so far is great. I would definitely recommend JVC products to anyone and I will always recommend Crutchfield, I would however suggest to a prospective buyer that they go down to the local car audio store to actually touch and experiment with the unit they were interested in.

Pros: Clean appearance, Nice compliment of features for a great price, BT adapter at this price??? Awesome. A great factory replacement stereo for someone who isn't looking to add a tactical mobile command center.

Cons: Red menu color too intense, control knob is devilishly slick

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This headunit has great bang for the buck and is easy to use with a lot of capability. If you are looking for a headunit that can use BT for your phone, control your iPod/iPhone through the headunit, and swap between all the normal inputs with ease on a budget this headunit delivers. I will also attest my girlfriend found it very easy to use after showing her the different commands. Not saying she is technically challenged, but some headunits are far too complicated to use. Finally, I will say the included documentation was very well written. There is a whole section that guides you through all of the commands and settings. It made it a breeze to adjust the different EQ settings and sync the phone via BT.

Pros: I purchased this for my girlfriend, I am very pleased to say that the head unit is very easy to use. You can swap between the different inputs with ease. The bluetooth sync'd up to her iPhone without any issues and the voice is very clear. Also the head unit control of iPods works very well.

Cons: The only thing I have discovered that I did not love was the slower response to displaying artist and track names, but that isn't a big deal.

Cons: I did not know the rear auxiliary input doubles as the Bluetooth input. So my plan of plugging my Sirius radio into the rear auxiliary input failed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great experience with my first Crutchfield purchase, and I really like this unit. It was easy to install, and is fairly easy to navigate through all the cycles. I bought it for the bluetooth, and couldn't be happier. I use it for hands free calling with my iPhone, and for playing music from my phone. I also prefer using bluetooth to stream AM radio from my iPhone. I love just about everything, but I want to talk about the issues I have with this stereo. I do recommend this stereo, but there are some things I don't like about it: The volume button is not well thought out. Its very slick, for lack of a better word, and could use some sort of tacky banding around it as it's hard to grasp. Also, if you push the volume knob, it mutes the sound. No problem except in a moving vehicle I tend to mute it everytime I go to adjust the volume. I love the bluetooth from my iPhone, and prefer it to the USB connection. I haven't tried using a memory stick of MP3's, but I don't like having my iphone connected to the stereo via USB. Not sure why, but the AM radio signal is terrible. I know the antenna is hooked up because the FM signal is fantastic. I've been streaming AM radio from my iPhone when I want to listen to sports or talk radio.

    Pros: customer service, bluetooth connection,

    Cons: volume button, AM radio

The pricing was in my budget! My 05 chevy cobalt has a pioneer 7 speaker system with a factory radio. It was time to upgrade the head unit! Once this deck was installed after 45mn! This deck was producing the highs and lows that were muddled by the factory radio. The media options are awesome. Usb will charge anything! Using our blue tooth enabled toys are easy to use! It plays the audio files on our phones via bluetooth! The install gear fit and looks good! WELL SPENT MONEY FOR THIS UNIT! Thank you crutchfield!

Pros: Free blue tooth adapter, free install gear, free shipping, and best free advice!

Cons: Didnt come with a protective case for the removable head unit face!

Gave this unit to my son for his 20th birthday and he is enjoying it. He always wanted an unit that would connect and charge his I-phone hassle free and this unit does that for him. The bluetooth feature was the main reason why I gave it to him, more for the safety and the peace of mind that he is handsfree and less opportunities for him to get a ticket for being on the cell phone.

I had a fairly specific feature set in mind when I bought the JVC. It met all my requirements, which include: front and rear aux inputs, iPod control, bluetooth streaming and bluetooth phone. The issues I have with the JVC are first, the display is impossible to read at certain times of day due to glare. Also, I must have missed something in the manual, but I cannot get to a menu to change the display colors. The unit does have a rear aux input, but if you want to use the bluetooth, it uses the rear jack so any other aux source must be plugged into the front panel. I should have paid more attention to the pictures of the stereo. It lacks preset FM buttons. You must cycle thru all 18 slots. I do love the bluetooth streaming from my iPhone. It works equally well with my music from iTunes and from the Pandora app.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The JVC KD-R520 features a detachable face to deter theft. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

LCD: The head unit features a 12-segment, two-line LCD with adjustable brightness and dimmer settings.

Brightness: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-R520 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-R520 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-R520 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-R520 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-R520 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Pro EQ: The KD-R520 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Tone Pro EQ
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 khz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

2.5V/4CH Preamp Output: The KD-R520 is equipped with two pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front, Rear/SW). You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting a pair of full-range rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading.

Built-in Crossovers: The JVC KD-R520 features a built-in high-pass filter for the unit's front & rear speakers and a low-pass filter for the unit's subwoofer output.

    • High-Pass Filter: You can activate a high-pass filter (fixed) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers.
    • Low-Pass Filter: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter at 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz.

Subwoofer Level: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between 0 and 8.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The JVC KD-R520 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: You can store a total of 18 FM stations presets and 6 AM station presets. The radio allows you to set your AM/FM stations manually or automatically.

IF Filter: You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

Mono: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing,

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-R520 can play MP3 (8-320 kbps)/WMA files (8-192 kbps) that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 255 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Track/Folder List: The Track/Folder List displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD, so you can easily access your music. The Track/Folder List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc. If the MP3/WMA disc contains a lot of tracks, you can fast search (+/-10 or +/-100) through the disc by turning the unit's control dial quickly.

Random/Repeat Modes: The JVC KD-R520 offers the following Repeat and Random playback modes for your audio CDs.

    • Repeat: Track Repeat (plays the current rack repeatedly), Folder Repeat (plays all tracks of the current folder repeatedly), Off (cancels repeat function
    • Random: Folder Random (plays al tacks of the current folder, then the tracks of the next folder in random), All Random (plays all tracks of the current disc at random), Off (cancels random function)

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust. The source will change to CD, and the disc will begin playback, even if you have another source selected at the time.

Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connectivity

USB Port: The JVC KD-R520 features a front panel USB 2.0 type-A port behind a sliding cover for connection of a USB mass-storage class device. The USB port enables audio playback and control of MP3(8-320 kbps)/WMA (8-192 kbps) audio files stored on a portable USB mass-storage class device formatted in FAT 12/16/32. The KD-R520 can recognize up to 255 folders (255 files per folder) and 65,025 total files. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3/WMA files (up to 60 characters).

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

iPod/iPhone Direct: The JVC KD-R520's front-panel USB port also acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the USB/iPod cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. An additional iPod cable is available (469USBPOD, sold separately) so you can leave one at home and one in the car. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the JVC in-dash head unit.

iPod/iPhone Audio Playback: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's large music libraries to be loaded instantly to the JVC head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 98dB. The JVC KD-R520 supports audio playback of music files, podcasts, and apps stored on your iPod or iPhone.

iPod/iPhone Control: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.

    • Music Browsing: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search your iPod/iPhone's music by Category (Playlist/Artist/Album/Song/Genre/Composer). If the selected category contains a high number of tracks, you can fast search (+/-10, 100, 1000) through the music tracks in that particular category by simply turning the head unit's control dial.
    • Repeat & Random: The KD-R520 also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of your iPod/iPhone.

Note: You can listen to apps stored on your iPhone through the JVC head unit when controlling the iiPhone via its touchscreen (cannot access apps via head unit control mode).

iPod/iPhone Display: The KD-R520 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information, regardless of control mode. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label.

iPod/iPhone Charging: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone.

Note: If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

iPod/iPhone Compatibility Chart: The JVC KD-R520 is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of February 2011):
