Our take on the JVC KD-HDR71BT

HD Radio™, hands-free calling, plus music streaming and apps
Are you a lover of local radio? JVC's KD-HDR71BT CD receiver kicks it up a notch with a built-in HD Radio tuner that pumps up the sound quality to near-CD level, while making AM broadcasts sound like traditional FM. And since stations can broadcast multiple channels on the same frequency, you may find you have more choices than ever before.

JVC gives you Bluetooth® with this receiver too. Pair up your iPhone®, Android™ smartphone, or Blackberry™, and you'll be able to receive text message notification, stream music, or access Internet radio stations, depending on your phone's features. You can also pair two phones at once, so there's no need to choose between your personal and business phones. When a call comes in, the receiver will blink either blue or red, so you'll know at a glance if your call is coming from home or the office. To answer a call, just tap the volume knob.

Great for Android smartphones
JVC's Android app lets you use your compatible Android phone's touchscreen to control receiver functions using finger swipes and gestures — for example, tap the screen to play and pause, or swipe right to skip forward a track. So pop your Android phone in a mount, and you can reach down to skip a track without taking your eyes off the road.

Control Pandora® Internet radio
JVC makes it easy to play your favorite Pandora stations. iPhone users can control Pandora when connected to the USB slot, while Android and Blackberry owners get full control of Pandora through the Bluetooth connection, depending on your phone's features.

Higher-power USB connection
JVC upped the power in their USB port, which lets you keep your smartphone charged, even when it's doing several tasks at once. And with your smartphone connected, you can listen to its internal memory as one source and access the little microSD card as another.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit into a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, after the stock receiver began to fail. With all of the necessary installation tools included by Crutchfield, I was able to install this in about an hour or so. The radio's packed with great features, such as variable color display and Bluetooth, all of which seem to work prefectly. Mounted the mic near the instrument panel and call quality seems to be good. There is a definite sound improvement with this unit too, especially with the HD Radio technology, despite me having the stock speakers still installed. Overall, this is a great unit and it did not disappoint.

Pros: Great sound quality, Hands-free calling, HD Radio built-in

    Cons: Slightly complicated menus

    Works great

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this is a fine receiver. I marked the 'ease of use' down because I think the operations of this stereo are overly complicated. Most of the complication comes from the number of functions available--everything from multiple inputs, to EQ settings, to Bluetooth, to display color choices--it does a lot and that requires complication in the operation. Also, I don't have other modern receivers to compare this to except stereos that come standard in a car which are much easier to operate. Nonetheless, I would hope that somewhere is a stereo built on the principle that less is sometimes more. Also, I installed this in a Subaru--don't forget to connect the blue wire for the power amplifier for the antennae. I thought it meant a power antennae that goes up and retracts; not the case.

    Pros: Performs as advertised.

Cons: Ease of operation is clutzy.

    Great flexabiltiy

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided on this unit for the Bluetooth and HD radio. It was my first experience with HD and its a pleasant surprise having the multi-channel stations. The setup menus for the radio can be a bit overwhelming at first, but in no time I had changed most of the settings, and paired an android, a windows, and iphone. This was not my first radio installation and as usual the Crutchfield included mounting hardware and instructions were excellent. This radio comes with a wired microphone for hands free calling that after taking a shortcut in the placement I discovered it has limited pickup of my normal speaking voice. Overall this is an excellent radio with enough features to please in this price range.

Pros: Bluetooth connectivity, HD, multiple colors and day/night brightness levels, great sound quality

Cons: limited microphone pickup range, setup can be time consuming only because of the all the choices, buttons on the radio and remote are small and labels can be difficult to read (for an old guy like me. )

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The JVC KD-HDR71BT is a value packed technologically advanced receiver for anyone needing HD radio, CD, and Bluetooth with iPod/iPhone controller capability. Has an aux input on the back and the faceplate for ease of interface and full of features not found in many receivers twice it's price!

Pros: Full features, good power built right in and a very good looking receiver! This receiver is packed with growth capability too. I just hope it is built as well as it looks!

Cons: May be slightly complicated to maneuver the adjustment settings menu, but it's really just a learning curve. Previous experience with JVC Arsenal receivers has been a bit of a disappointment... my last one (replaced by this one) played just fine, but all the controls quit working and it was about 18 months old. Out of warranty and who knows what it would have cost to repair it. I just ordered a new one and tossed the old one in the trash. Shame.....!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This my second Chrutchfield car audio purchase. Just like the first one years ago the installation was a snap. Chrutchfield deserves kudos for the simplified instruction set included with the audio purchase. All the installation parts included do their job and make the decision process to purchase a no brainer. The JVC unit is exactly what I was looking for to go in my Mazda truck. The stereo works flawlessly and is quite easy to set up. Sound is so nice in the small cab of the truck.

Pros: Ease of installation is a great benefit. It was installed and set up in about an hour and a half. Sound quality is what I was looking for and this unit gives that to me at a fair price. I am 65 years old and if this was an easy install for me most any one can get the job done.

Cons: Not really a con but there are so many units to choose from I spent more time making up my mind than the installation took to complete.

A lot of bells and whistles for the money

    1999 Saturn SW2
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I upgraded my 1999 Saturn factory radio for the JVC KD-HDR71BT. I was interested in having an HD radio with bluetooth options. I also wanted to have a USB outlet available on the front of the radio. Wow what a difference this radio makes. I put in decent speakers several years ago and had no idea what the right radio could do for them. The bluetooth works well with my Windows 8 phone. Another bonus is the Pandora radio option. I use my IPOD Touch with the Pandora app. I have ordered from Crutchfield before and have always been pleased with their products and services. I have never installed a radio before and it was so easy. It went so quickly I couldn't believe I was done. I would recommend this radio. There are others that are less expensive, but they don't have all these great options.

Pros: Tons of out of the box options. Front and rear USB port. HD Radio & Bluetooth. Remote control.

Cons: The auto search buttons are super small and a little bit challenging to press when driving.

    A very good product!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 1998 Olds Bravada which already has JVC front components and rear coaxials. Though not my first choice due to budget reasons, it met my minimum requirements of Bluetooth, HD Radio, USB input and front/rear/sub preouts. BT works well and the radio has no problem reading my 16GB micro usb. It has a good number of sound processing options that will be more useful once I finish the rest of the system. Still getting used to navigating all of the menus. Overall, pretty good headunit considering the price and included install gear.

Pros: Good sound with plenty of personalization and expansion options. BT is great.

    Cons: Single line display.

    OK radio HAS FLAWS

Chris from Atlanta, GA on 5/9/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Radio sounds good, good build, but...... Several flaws 1. When shifting from preset station to a substation or another frequency, and then back radio loses track of preset, and returns to 1st preset. 2. Bluetooth usb dongle does not always activate, and radio has to be shut down to get the radio to recognize it. 3. Radio does not alway recognize plugged in usb stick, and radio has to be shut down to get the radio to recognize it. 4. Radio rescans usb stick each time the source is switched to the usb source even if no changes have been made. -Really annoying 30 sec - 2 min each time depending on size of stick.

    Overly complicated.

robertg222 from Silver Spring, MD on 5/5/2014

My choice of radios for a Volvo was very limited so I ended up with the JVC. So far the unit seems to work just fine. But actually using it with the way the menus are setup is a bit of a challenge. First off even though you get 18 preset stations you can only use 6 of them easily with the buttons. For the rest you need to drill down through the menus. Not practical when driving. The balance, fader, EQ are also things that you have to drill down through the menus to get to. Then when you are adjusting the ED and also want to change the volume you have to get out of the menus and then back into the menus to do more adjustments. Defiantly can't do it while driving. I don't really think that the people who designed this radio ever actually used it in a car. The screen brightness is also a real let down. In daylight it is almost impossible to read at any angle.

Pros: Sounds good. Lots of features.

Cons: Screen to dim in daylight. Not readable.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound and easy to install. The wire colors matched the Crutchfield supplied wiring harness making it very easy to match everything up. Was able to setup the blue tooth on the first try and so far no issues with it.

Pros: Multiple color selection is pretty cool. Has all the sound features I was looking for (Adjustable EQ and loudness control). Drives MTX terminator speakers well without external amp.

Cons: The display is dim if viewed at an angle. In my install, I cannot control the angle at which the stereo mounts so from the driver seat, the display is barely visible during the day on full brightness. Figuring out how to set radio presets higher than 6 has been a challenge.

We like the sound, the look, the quality of the Bluetooth connection.

Pros: Looks sharp. Sounds great. Though it takes a few seconds each time the Bluetooth initially connects, once it does, it sounds great and we have had no trouble keeping the connection.

Cons: It isn't as user friendly as I would like. We've had it a month or two and I still haven't gotten used to how to get to all the FM radio presets...or to display the clock when I want to see the time. I'm sure that I will figure these out, but it hasn't been obvious.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great value for the price. This came with HD radio and bluetooth. Mic quality is also above average. My only two knock against it is 1. I had to remove the face trim to make it fit into my Corolla and 2. No diagram for the wiring on the back so you had to guess a bit .

Pros: HD radio. Bluetooth. Good quality Mic. Sound quality is excellent.

Cons: Face Trim had to be remove to fit. No wiring diagram so you had to guess a little when soldering this to the included wiring harness which did have a wiring diagram. Not a big deal but when you have to solder and heat wrap 12 wires together, you like to be 100% sure that you've connected everything to the right wires so you don't have to redo anything.

Purchased this head unit to replace a stock GM one in my truck which didn't illuminate anymore. The install took about 45 minutes which was longer than it should have taken at 9 PM outside in the dark with 15 degree temps, lol. Just had to get it installed. After the install I was able to quickly dial in the audio, EQ, stations and colors. Once everything was complete I paired my Bluetooth. I have had this installed with four new speakers and a powered compact sub for over a week and couldn't be happier. JVC has really stepped up their game and I am able to really tune in the highs, mids, and lows. Very impressed by the quality and low price of this unit. Crutchfield truly makes retrofitting old car stereos fun by including detailed instructions, hardware, and super helpful tech support. Thanks

Pros: Quality, looks, features, sound, price

With features that exceeds actually offered in more expensive double spaced units, this JVC have it ALL. Great sound with factory speakers and radio reception, CD Player, USB port and Bluetooth with smartphone apps compability. You can even set different colors in the dial section and the display section separately. Are you kidding me? Like most single dial control units, configuring and settings can take a while to get used to but you can always check out the well-documented user guide. This was installed in a 2004 Chevy Cavalier; included detailed instructions were really appreciated (you got to take out most of the dash to install this baby).

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This JVC lineup of auto stereos with Bluetooth in this price range is fantastic. I have replaced at least 3 vehicle head units with various JVC models in this price range with similar features, and they all look and sound great. The user selectable frequency EQ option is a big plus since you can really tune the output of these stereos to match the speakers it is driving. Selectable colors for the display and buttons customizes the look in your dashboard. Programmable output options for pre-amp out to subs is also a plus with the low & hi pass filters to further separate the signals going to subs and the full range speakers. Bluetooth works great for streaming audio and phone. This JVC stereo, like the others in this line up, is a great value that will not disappoint.

Pros: Programmable User EQ, Selectable output options, clean sound, removable faceplate, remote control

    Cons: None

Nice head unit. Easy install with install kit. Great display. Could customize colors and intensity for both day and night. Bright white is very visible in day when lights off. Goes to orange to match dash lights when headlamps on. Very easy menus. Great Bluetooth. Nice to have pandora. Mic easily routed to A column for hands free calls. A winner. Dual USB allowed iPod in glovebox with front driving phone. Versatile.

Pros: Good sound. Great looks. Legibility in all lighting. Great Bluetooth. HD radio quality.

    Cons: None.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This radio has very good bass and treble, but volume settings between the satellite and other functions vary greatly. Volume with the AM/FM tuner requires it to be set very low before switching to Sirius satellite function or it will be very loud and possibly blowout your speakers. I have to set the volume to no high then 2 before switching from FM to Sirius. This radio gives you good bass at a lower setting then other radios. It has two USB ports (one in front and one on back that can be extended out to the front with a small modification to mounting bracket. Bluetooth microphone is also included with this radio making it easy to use your cell phone hands-free. It also has built-in HD radio though you need to be within 25 miles of the broadcasting station to receive a good HD signal. Overall this is a very good radio with many features built into it.

Pros: Built-in HD radio receiver, two USB ports, Sirius Satellite ready, built-in Bluetooth, very good bass, middle and treble levels settings. Many different color display settings are available. Very good aftermarket head unit.

Cons: Sensitive volume settings switching between FM tuner and Sirius satellite function, it will be very loud on the Sirius setting if volume is above 2 on FM tuner.

I wanted a cd stereo with HD radio and Blue Tooth (for my S3 android phone) plus usb and aux in, etc. JVC and Kenwood were the choices in this price range. I chose the JVC and I'm very happy I did. Unit pairs with my phone no problem. I can answer calls make calls, play song lists, etc. Once you figure out the controls it is not that difficult to operate. All in all it does what I need it to do. Haven't had it long enough to check out all the features but pleasantly surprised every time I discover some other neat one. Sound quality is very good even though I'm using factory speakers. The best part, you can look all over and get the unit a few bucks cheaper but you can't beat Crutchfield for making sure you have every thing you need for a successful installation and their customer service is second to none.

Pros: works well with android phone

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was replacing a double din unit just like it that died in my 2005 Focus that got totaled in February 2013. The unit has awesome sound and works great with my Rockford Fosgate 6x8 speakers which I did salvage from my Focus. I like the look and feel of the unit. Although after having the double DIN It does seem a bit cramped at times. The sound is very similar to how it sounded in my Focus, I just need to add a Sub so the low end sounds better. I had an MTX form fitting sub in my Focus and it will not work in the Explorer. I do have one grip. The included install kit that allowed me to use the factory wiring harness was cheap and did cause me some woes after reinstalling the unit a few times. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. Cruthfield was very responsive and even sent me a replacement unit because I thought the power amp was blown initially. I was troubleshooting while waiting for the new unit to arrive and discovered that the header for the speaker to factory speaker wire adapter was having a shorting issue. I found that the front positive pins were shorted. Once I straightened that up and got the connectors to plug back into each other the unit returned to great sound with no "blown amp" symptoms. So just in case if your setup sounds like the amp is blown, check the cheap connectivity gear that you get for free!

Pros: Unit looks and sounds amazing as expected. Easy to install

Cons: Cheap connectivity accessories can be a pain in the ear(s)

unit installed easily, with no problems. Installing in my '01 Forrester S was a breeze compared to some of the other installs I've done. Provided wiring harness and instructions were easy to follow -- make sure you get have wire nuts or crimp connectors on hand (I ended up soldering 'cause it was a last-minute late-night project preceding a road trip and I didn't have enough crimp connectors in my parts stash.) Having the hands-free/bluetooth is fantastic, and the unit seems to handle cab noise extremely well. I'm absolutely pleased with the purchase.

Pros: Sounds great, even on my stock speakers. Decent Android support, strong bluetooth connectivity (Galaxy Note 2) HD Radio dash-mount mic works great, handles cab noise well. the custom color schemes are fun.

Cons: missing intuitive play/pause buttons (press volume button to mute) Traversing the menus can be a bit cumbersome, especially while driving, but I haven't found it to be a significant source of frustration. As others have noted, the interface can indeed be too bright at night, even at 00... However, this can be mitigated by choosing the right color scheme for the "night" scene. Some experimentation required.

I wanted a replacement that had HD radio, but NV recently passed laws requiring hands free phones while driving. The JVC KD-HDR71BT had both features that I was looking for. It execures both those perfectly, with the added bonuses of playing Digital Audio form USB in the front and looking great. It wan an exceptional vale too!

Pros: USB Front, BT, HD Radio, Great sound, Very simple installation.

Installation was simple and well explained except which wire to connect, or not connect, for the factory sub. When I called the tech support they walked me right through it and it worked perfectly. The instructions for the receiver aren't too clear, but you can figure out all of the features fairly quickly. Blue tooth and HD radio are working great. I use Pandora on Android and had to play around to figure out how to set it up and be able to control Pandora through the receiver. I didn't find good instructions for it. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the receiver and Crutchfield.

I'm pleased with this head unit. The lighting options are really cool and allow me to match the color for my picky customer, errr, spouse. The sound qua It's is superior to the stock Gm stereo. The front and rear USB ports are versatile. The rear USB port is on a roughly 2ft extension cable, that allowed me to run it to the glove box. The Bluetooth functionality is a tiny USB dongle that by default plugs in to this rear cable/port. You can alternatively move the BT dongle to the front. You could then use the USB cable to attach and charge the iPod or phone, etc. Th hd radio seems to work really well, the sound quality of he radio is fantastic and in my experience is better than FM(duh) but MUCH better than sirius,xm. No compression artifacts as with Siriusxm. The menu system is a little bit tricky to navigate, in this age of android and iOS touch screen user interfaces. It's not terrible, but in a ideal world this would be easier. BT paired with my htc droid and I was making calls microphone comes on a long cable that allowed me to mount it nea r the center map light at top/center of windshield, as I read this was a good location.

    Great Stereo, Bad Menu's

Capt Fiero from Surrey BC Canada on 9/20/2012

I love the phone functions, the bluetooth works great, the display is more than bright enough in a Fiero. No glare for me, but the stereo is very low in the cabin a Fiero, so that might be why I don't have any issues. Everything about the unit is Great, EXECPT, something as simple as turning the Bass/Treble up down, or adjusting the EQ takes me a ton of button presses. The only "shortcut" to changine the EQ is have the remote handy as it has a one button adjustment on there for the presets. I am tempted to get an external sub control just so I can fine tune the bass level easily. I really enjoy the fact that the JVC App for the phone uses the phone as a 2nd display to show track information and radio station details as well. The phone features work the best out of any head unit I have tested. Being able to dial a number from my address book using the head unit is also handy. All in all this stereo gets an 8 out of 10. Only reason its not a 10, is the interface is such a pain.

    Cons: Menu Interface

    2009 Chevrolet Impala
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this stereo because of its features - Bluetooth, dual USB ports, HD radio... I was initially happy because this stereo has beautiful sound quality, but I was dismayed when it became apparent that the user interface is terrible. Sometimes the simplest features are the most important. Nothing is perfect, but some small changes could have made this stereo more usable. When bringing up the menu, the first category is "demo". It is useless, and they should have buried the option it in the menu instead of making it first. The equalizer is the only menu item I change every time I drive, but it is 6th in the menu. This makes it a chore to change the EQ settings. After raising/lowering the volume, it lingers on the display for about 10 seconds. This is way too long, and 100% unchangeable. The display face is shiny and reflects sunlight, which makes it impossible to see the text during the daytime, even with the display at maximum brightness. No, I will not be getting tinted windows so that I can keep using this stereo. They should have made the display face matte-coated instead of shiny. The "forward/next" button is way too close to the "source" button and it is too easy to mistake the two without looking. This is very frustrating. Pressing the source button by mistake is very distracting, especially in heavy traffic. The user interface is annoying. I would never recommend this stereo to anybody. I will contact support about returning it for a different model.

Pros: Great features! Sound quality is spectacular. Mid-range audio is crystal clear (I am using the OEM speakers which came with my Impala). Bluetooth works great and is also clear! USB flash memory MP3 function is fast and responsive. This is a solid unit. All of the advertised features work very well.

Cons: Do not underestimate this statement: the plastic on the front of the display is very shiny, and the LED is dim, so the display is unreadable during the day. Changing the settings is very tedious and cumbersome. The display defaults to showing the song being played. Need to press the "Disp" button a few times to what time it is.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit itself is nice. Menus take some getting used to. I have some big complaints about the bluetooth and USB though. It doesn't always pickup my iPod Touch 4G - particularly the Bluetooth. I have a 10 minute drive to work and it's easier just to get in the car with my iPod in my pocket and trust that the Bluetooth will connect. Sometimes the display just reads "STOP" and it never connects. I contacted JVC but their service was terrible. They claimed they'd never seen that message before and said it must be my iPod that has the problem. I got the same message once when I had it connected through USB. Seems the people that built this would know what the errors mean. Very disappointed with their feedback and won't likely buy a JVC again. The unit can also store contact information but it doesn't work for the iPhone. I imagine that's an actual iPhone problem but when I try to pull the contacts over Bluetooth, the BT on the unit shuts off and both my devices disconnect. JVC couldn't offer any solution to that either.

Pros: Versatile and plenty of options for the price. Sounds great through stock speakers.

Cons: Bluetooth connectivity with iPod Touch. JVC offered little to no support.

An excellent upgrade over my Subaru Foresters "premium" stock head. Power is great and sound quality noticeably improved. Do not miss the factory sub, which this unit does not drive. Bluetooth integration is excellent, with phone integration better than my wife's new TSX. HD radio well worth the small additional cost, as it makes listening enjoyable again. Crutchfield support and installation instructions superlative. I really couldn't be happier.

    Pros: Sound, bluetooth, HD radio

Cons: not all controls immediately intuitive, but good directions and easy to learn with small effort.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to upgrade/replace a JVC KD-HDR10, in order to gain Bluetooth and USB functionality. Sound is similar to the previous unit - good. It's driving OEM speakers in the Accord, and the EQ helps even those out a bit. In our other car my HDR10 is driving Focals, which it sounds great with, I expect this unit would also. HD radio functionality is solid, as with the previous unit. Bluetooth functionality, both phone and audio streaming, works pretty well, no issues there. Using it with a Samsung Focus (WP7.5). The USB input though has some serious problems, which I will be contacting crutchfield/JVC about. If you are playing from a USB memory card/drive, and you turn the car/unit off, it *always* fails when you turn it back on with "read failure". You have to remove the stick, turn the unit off, turn it on again and re-insert the stick - then it'll read ok and resume. Serious and unacceptable bug which I hope JVC will address with a firmware update, otherwise it might be going back.

Pros: Good sound, flexible EQ HD radio and Bluetooth work great Good build quality, and display color customization Good value for HD radio, BT, USB inputs, etc.

Cons: Serious bugs with USB input and memory cards/sticks (see review above) Source selection is a bit of a pain due to the lack of a separate "band" button - so AM is in the list as well, and also AUX even when nothing is connected to the jack.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this to replace the factory unit. I wanted HD radio and more power. This unit delivered both. The old unit wasn't able to deliver a lot of volume on noisy roads (the Hyundai Accent isn't a quiet vehicle) but this unit pumps out the volume with no trouble. It makes the factory speakers sound better. With a lot of adjustments in the EQ, you can set this up however you'd like. The adjustable color schemes are nice, but not a big deal for me.

Pros: Easy to install. Great sound. Excellent volume. Wonderful EQ. This is completely customizable for sound and visual display.

Built-in HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. HD Radio technology significantly improves audio quality and reception, as well as includes information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo, while FM digital will have CD-like quality sound with static free and clear reception.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting, it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Text Display: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the JVC KD-HDR71BT.

iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store. You can "tag" up to 50 songs.

Note: Your iPod/iPhone must have at least 50MB of free space to "tag" and transfer songs. iTunes 7.4 or later is required to purchase "tagged" songs.

Analog Broadcasts: In addition to HD AM/FM stations, the KD-HDR71BT can also receive conventional analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Digital/Analog Tuning: You can setup the KD-HDR71BT to search both analog and digital radio stations, only HD Radio stations, or analog radio stations only.

Digital/Analog Presets: You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM digital/analog presets stations as presets (HD Radio multicast channels can also be preset). Presets can be set manually or automatically, using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM).

Radio Timer: You can tune into a preset station at a specific time regardless of the head unit's current source. You can activate the Radio Timer once, daily, or turn it completely off.

Mono Mode: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

IF Filter: You can also switch the analog tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.

    Built-in Bluetooth

USB Bluetooth Adapter: The JVC KD-HDR71BT comes supplied with a USB Bluetooth Adapter (KS-UBT1) which is pre-installed into the head unit's rear-panel USB input, making the KD-HDR71BT Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR certified. The KD-HDR71BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication and wireless audio streaming.

Note: The USB Bluetooth Adapter (KS-UBT1) must remain plugged into the rear-panel USB port, or can also be installed in the head unit's front-panel USB port.

Bluetooth Technology: Bluetooth is a two-way wireless communication system allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, as well as wirelessly stream audio from your Bluetooth enabled portable music player using the JVC in-dash CD receiver. Bluetooth wireless technology operates on a 2.4GHZ frequency band within a range of approximately 10 meters (about 33 feet).

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Pairing: Your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or digital audio player must be paired with KD-HDR71BT before hands-free & wireless operation. You can register up to five Bluetooth enabled devices with the JVC head unit. You can keep two phones connected at all times (only one can be used during a call).

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JVC head unit. See JVC's Bluetooth compatibility chart for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

External Microphone: The JVC KD-HDR71BT includes an external microphone to carry on your side of your phone conversation and voice command dialing. The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 12' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.485" (depth).

Note: This unit does not offer an integrated front-panel microphone.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The front-panel controls of the KD-HDR71BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers (front or all). During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker, the head unit's display will flash (Ring Color), and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the KD-HDR71BT's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call. You can adjust the head unit's ring color from the unit's 29 preset colors or 30,000 custom colors.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the KD-HDR71BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's front-panel rotary dial.
      • Speed Dialing: You can store up to 6 contacts in the memory of this unit for speed dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KD-HDR71BT. Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-HDR71BT utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-HDR71BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-HDR71BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-HDR71BT are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-HDR71BT with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Pro EQ: The KD-HDR71BT is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Pro EQ
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed

Source Link EQ: This feature allows you to store Pro EQ bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, HD Radio, Aux, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, and Pandora).

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

2.5V/6CH Preamp Output: The KD-HDR71BT is equipped with three pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front & rear preamp outputs offer balance/fade control and are designed to hookup to a full-range 4-channel amplifier. • Low Pass Crossover: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Crossover for subwoofer preamp output. You can select from 55 Hz, 85 Hz, 120 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (0-8) from the CD receiver.

High-Pass Crossover: When activate the subwoofer preamp output's low pass crossover, you can also activate a high-pass filter (fixed at low-pass filter frequency) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

Nope, it can not. [ RUSSELL  Jul 11, 2014 ]
Sorry- I did buy this unit and I expect to like it. Due to the car status in my family I have not installed it yet. Sorry [ STEVEN H  Jul 11, 2014 ]
Dear Luis, Yes! This unit is in my wife's car. We just tested it, because we don't need the Bluetooth as often as we thought. If you ask Siri to play your text for you, she will play them back over the speakers. I think you need to purchase the speaker/microphone kit that comes with the unit. The Crutchfield team will set you up. I have recently had three different brands in the last four years, and hers is my favorite so far. I especially like the mute button compared to Sony and Kenwood. Hope that helps, Gayne [ GAYNE  May 11, 2014 ]
yes I was able to do that. I tried it once and it worked just like the wireless headset I used to use with my Galaxy S3. [ Charles  May 10, 2014 ]
    I don't know I never try It. [ ANTHONY  May 09, 2014 ]
I dont know for sure, I know the clock can be displayed and survive power cycling the unit, but then you loose other information. Such as station, artist info and other display info. [ RUSSELL  Apr 28, 2014 ]
    This answers my question. Thanks! [ Andre S.  Apr 27, 2014 ]
Yes you can. The head unit can be set to display the time by default, then when changing stations it will briefly display either the station name (such as KUPD) or the stations numerical value (97.9FM) which can also be toggled via the display button. [ ANDREAS  Apr 27, 2014 ]
Yes, the music is muted when on a call. In fact, the volume for the call, and the radio are separate. Raising or lowering the volume for the call, does not affect the volume of the radio, (music). The mic cord is plenty long enough to route it pretty much where you want. Mine is on the A pillar at the roof. Hope this helps. [ RICHARD W  Apr 28, 2014 ]
It replaces the music completely. And can have an independent audio level. Mic cord is about 10 feet [ RUSSELL  Apr 28, 2014 ]
Yes it does mute the music volume as soon as you make or receive a call. The mic cord is long enough to place just about anywhere. [ BOBBI  Apr 27, 2014 ]
Great this answers my question. Thanks! [ Andre S.  Apr 27, 2014 ]
It mutes the music, there's a ton of microphone cord, at least 10 feet. [ MARK  Apr 27, 2014 ]
This will depend largely on your vehicle. For details on installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on what you will need for an installation. [ Jeff  Jan 27, 2014 ]  Staff
This receiver is compatible with SIRIUS satellite radio. However, you will need a SIRIUS doc and play receiver and the SIRIUS Dock-and-Play Package for JVC [ Jeff  Nov 29, 2013 ]  Staff
