Our take on the JVC KD-R320

You want a stereo that blows away your factory radio, but you're not Bill Gates. Enter JVC's KD-R320 CD receiver — it gives you the basic functions you want, but beneath the surface lies a music lover's bag of tricks that'll have you enjoying your favorite tunes like never before.

You want a stereo that blows away your factory radio, but you're not Bill Gates. Enter JVC's KD-R320 CD receiver — it gives you the basic functions you want, but beneath the surface lies a music lover's bag of tricks that'll have you enjoying your favorite tunes like never before.

Dual auxiliary inputs
Let's face it, there are plenty of ways to play your tunes these days. JVC built two auxiliary inputs into the KD-R320, one on the front and one in back. This way, you can hook up a more permanent source, like a Dock & Play satellite radio, to the rear input, while leaving the convenient front input for connecting your iPod® or another MP3 player. You can load up a CD with MP3 and WMA files, too — it's easy to fit several albums on a single disc that way.

Advanced sound controls
JVC uses a 24-bit digital-to-analog converter in this receiver. What's this mean to you? You'll hear more detail and clarity, and a more focused sound from your CDs. JVC packs the KD-R320 with a flexible, 3-band parametric EQ that gives you extra control over adjusting the high, mid, and low frequencies. A built-in high-pass filter lets you trim the low bass from your speakers, allowing them to run at peak efficiency. Adding a powered sub? You can switch the preamp outputs to subwoofer mode, and use the subwoofer level control for on-the-fly changes.

Add hands-free calling
Get a lot of calls while you're in the car? Why risk an accident fumbling around for your phone or driving with one hand? You can add the safety and convenience of hands-free calling with JVC's Bluetooth® adapter. When a call comes in, you can talk naturally and hear your caller over your speakers — a lot like talking to someone in the front seat. Most importantly, you can keep your eyes straight ahead and your hands on the wheel.

    Excellent CD receiver, great value

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Apparently the MOSFET amps make a big difference in sound quality. I can hear subtleties in the music (CD) with this unit that I don't hear with my wife's new Jensen HD53131R unit, which does not have MOSFET amps. In both cases we are using the factory speakers. The JVC unit is clean and clear, while the Jensen unit adds a 'tizz' or 'grit' sound to higher pitched instruments and voices. On FM the difference is even more pronounced, although that may be somewhat due to the JVC tuner, which is very sensitive. This JVC unit has an adjustable light dimmer, which is needed when driving on the dark country roads out here. The lights automatically dim when the headlights are on. You can set the brightness for day and night in the menu, but also on the road by using the 'brightness' button on the unit. This is excellent design, and makes this unit much safer to have than the Jensen unit which has no dimming at all. This JVC unit has the option to assign two RCA jacks on the back to subwoofer use. Then, you can adjust the level, and crossover frequency at these jacks in the setup menu. You also can keep low bass out of the main (in my case, factory) speakers with another adjustment, which is electrically the same as adding 'bass blocker' capacitors. I assume the crossover frequency is the same as that for the subwoofer jacks.

Pros: 1. Sound quality is excellent 2. Light dimmer with adjustments for day & night 3. Subwoofer output jacks for external amp 4. Built-in 'bass blockers' on all 4 channels 5. Relatively easy to set clock & other items 6. Six presettable panel buttons for stations 7. Rotary volume control. 8. Can insert CD thru slot, no need to flip down faceplate 9. Front panel jack for external mp3/wma player. 10. Standard 'press & hold' to preset the six radio station buttons

Cons: 1. Would prefer to rotate the main knob to search manually for stations, rather than step by pushing a button. 2. Would prefer blue lighting, as it would match the other dash lights.

I just wanted a simple radio. Maybe it has just been too long since the last purchase, but, I had to study the manual just to tune the thing. The print is too small or might be that the red glow over powers my ability to red the labels. My husband did find it easy to install and I don't have any complain about the sound and reception. But, again, it is too hard to adjust. I set the bass without a problem but can't really set balance. The default is OK but sometimes when traveling with someone hard hearing I like to change the setting - out of luck. I preset FM stations but am not able to preset AM.

    Best sound for the money

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After buying a "beater car" for the gas mileage, my wife and I decided we needed to upgrade the stereo so we could add a satellite radio unit. Not wanting to spend a whole lot of money I researched Crutchfield and ran across this JVC. I've always been a Pioneer man but got the JVC because of the price. We are so glad we did. Don't let the price fool you, this thing has everything and more than we need. The sound is much better and with the adjustable EQ settings we can always get the sound we're after. And as usual, Crutchfield made everything easy on me for the installation.

    OK Radio

Mark K from Wethersfield, CT on 9/29/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall OK unit. The bad thing is this: It gives you 18 FM & 6 am channel presets. No where on the unit is a BAND Button. So once you go through your first 6 FM pre-sets (using 1-6 buttons on UNIT),It gets EXTREMELY difficult to get to the remaining 12 without pressing more than one button.IT is also the same way when you want to store various stations to assigned numbers.I finally called JVC and they walked me through how to do it.Their directions were not clear at all.I would caution about buying this unit because of this. You should not have to take a college course on how to program and pre set a radio!!!!(every other brand i have owned have all had band buttons to seperate FM1,FM2,FM3, and AM) This DOES NOT !!!!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am not tech-savvy so the instruction booklet was almost useless the way it is written. My techie friends didn't even use it. They just played around with the radio until they figured it out. The radio is fine. I just wish the instruction booklet was not so confusing.

Poor FM reception from factory radio caused me to order this unit. It's no better and may be worse. Buttons are tiny, menu use is very confusing. Sounds great once you get it set up for CD & MP#3 player but there's no connection for the factory sub-woofer. It's going back...

Really pleased with this HU. This is the first JVC I've owned and I am impressed. It has a ton of built-in features for such a low-priced receiver. It works great as an upgrade for an old stereo (like the stock cassette player that was in my recently acquired Mazda) and for building a budget system.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this cd reciever for my 2007 Jeep Wrangler JK. It sounds great and has a bunch of features that is usually found in high price receiver's. I was surprised with it only being this much but I looked at the other reviews and was sold on this player. It was also easy to install thanks to Crutchfield's mastersheets and install guide's. If your looking for a good cd reciever for a good price then I recommend this product!

for me there are too many steps to repeat a tune from my c.d. color is nice on it at night or day. installation is very simple. there are a lot of steps to get the system to perform at the level of the other unit that i had install in my car, which was a J V C. also, i was told that the plug in was the same more or less for this model as the previous one that was installed. it was not., overall i give it a (3) star rating

    Great product!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Incredible stereo, and a great value at this price! Very easy install, got the adapter cable and installation kit, I was able to pre-assemble by installing the radio in the new dash panel and pre-wiring the adapter harness to the harness that came with the radio in the comfort of my own home, once that was done, took about 30 seconds to install in my truck. Sound is incredible, unbelievably easy to use and figure out, very high quality sound. I'm extremely happy with this purchase and still can't believe I paid so little for a stereo that sounds like it should have cost hundreds of dollars. Way to go Crutchfield and JVC!!

Brought my old Blazer back to life

93 Blazer from Uxbridge, Massachusetts on 5/10/2011

This stereo is an incredible value, the price does it no justice. I purchased the adapter harness and installation kit for the low price of an additional $15.00 along with the stereo, I was able to do all the wiring in my house, after installing the stereo in the new dash panel, all I had to do was plug it in and the wow what a difference!! I also added the auxillary cable from my satellite radio to the very convenient aux jack in the back of the radio, and my satellite reception is now like listening to a CD. This stereo has brought audio life back to my big old 93 Chevy Blazer, awesome improvement!

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The JVC KD-R320 features a detachable face to deter theft. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

LCD: The head unit features a 14-segment, one-line LCD with adjustable brightness and dimmer settings.

Brightness: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-R320 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-R320 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-R320 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-R320 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-R320 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Pro EQ: The KD-R320 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    TonePro EQ
    Bass60, 80, 100, 200 Hz+/- 12 dB (-6 to +6)1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0

    Treble10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 khz+/- 12 dB (-6 to +6)Fixed

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

Switchable Preamp Output: The KD-R320 is equipped with one pair of 2.5V preamp outputs. You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading.

Built-in Crossovers: The JVC KD-R320 features a built-in high-pass filter for the unit's front & rear speakers and a low-pass filter for the unit's subwoofer output.

    • High-Pass Filter: You can activate a high-pass filter (fixed) for the unit's front & rear speaker channels, so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers.
    • Low-Pass Filter: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter at 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz.

Subwoofer Level: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between 0 and 8.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The JVC KD-R320 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: You can store a total of 18 FM stations presets and 6 AM station presets. The radio allows you to set your AM/FM stations manually or automatically.

IF Filter: You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

Mono: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing,

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-R320 can play MP3 (8-320 kbps)/WMA files (8-192 kbps) that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 255 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Track/Folder List: The Track/Folder List displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD, so you can easily access your music. The Track/Folder List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc. If the MP3/WMA disc contains a lot of tracks, you can fast search (+/-10 or +/-100) through the disc by turning the unit's control dial quickly.

Random/Repeat Modes: The JVC KD-R320 offers the following Repeat and Random playback modes for your audio CDs.

    • Repeat: Track Repeat (plays the current track repeatedly), Folder Repeat (plays all tracks of the current folder repeatedly), Off (cancels repeat function)
    • Random: Folder Random (plays all tracks of the current folder, then the tracks of the next folder in random), All Random (plays all tracks of the current disc at random), Off (cancels random function)

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Disc Protection:If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust. The source will change to CD, and the disc will begin playback, even if you have another source selected at the time.

Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    Aux Connection

Dual Auxiliary Inputs: A front-panel & rear-panel stereo minijack are provided to allow the connection of portable audio sources. Simply connect your portable digital music player to either the unit's front or rear auxiliary input, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

    Bluetooth/Remote Control

Optional Bluetooth: The unit's rear-panel auxiliary input can also be used to connect JVC's KS-BTA100 Bluetooth Adapter (105KSBTA10, sold separately). The KS-BTA100 gives you hands-free communication from your compatible Bluetooth mobile phone and wireless streaming audio from a Bluetooth enabled digital audio player. The optional JVC Bluetooth Adapter includes a super-sensitive microphone, an Answer/End button, and playback controls. The KD-R320 can be set to automatically mute any music audio to your vehicle's speakers so you can listen to your telephone call using your car speakers.

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-R320 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK52). The remote contains Power, Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking, and Volume functions. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V Lithium-cell battery (included).
