Our take on the JVC KD-R640

You like to go your own way. You zig when others zag. So clearly the standard red or blue illumination display for your car stereo won't do. JVC's KD-R640 CD receiver offers the choice of over 30,000 different colors for the display and controls on this receiver. You can assign different colors to the display and controls, and even set the receiver to cycle through all colors for constant variety.

Colorful choices

You like to go your own way. You zig when others zag. So clearly the standard red or blue illumination display for your car stereo won't do. JVC's KD-R640 CD receiver offers the choice of over 30,000 different colors for the display and controls on this receiver. You can assign different colors to the display and controls, and even set the receiver to cycle through all colors for constant variety.

Easy access to your choice of music

Use the easily accessible front-panel USB port for your iPod, iPhone, or Android phone, then use this JVC's driver-friendly controls to access and enjoy your playlists. Or load a thumb drive up with your favorite tunes and rock out that way.  And if you're a CD fan, you've got the option to drop in a disc, too. The KD-R640 includes a front auxiliary input for a Dock-and-Play satellite radio or other sound source.

Awesome sound, no matter what source

You can make fine adjustments to the highs, mids, and lows with the 3-band parametric EQ, and you can use the built-in high-pass filter to trim the low bass from your speakers, allowing them to run at peak efficiency. You'll find two sets of preamp outputs for connecting amps and subs, and you can even switch the rear preamp outputs to subwoofer mode, then use the subwoofer level control for on-the-fly changes.

JVC KD-R640 CD receiver

You can zero in on an exact match for your car's dash lighting, or just go wild.

Add hands-free calling

It's never wise to handle your phone while driving. Experience the safety and convenience of hands-free calling by adding JVC's Bluetooth® adapter. When a call comes in, you'll talk naturally and hear your caller over your speakers – just like you're talking to someone in the front seat. You can keep both hands free and concentrate on your driving. The adapter also gives you the ability to stream music from a compatible device straight into the JVC.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this unit and was able to install it in my 06 jeep liberty very easily with the kit this site supplied, took perhaps 20 minutes and all the features supplied in my sports model jeep wired into the stereo Sound is decent for the price, I will be getting better matched speakers for it soon, stock in my car are 2 ohms My favorite feature of this stereo is the dim-able buttons and LCD display, that both can be changed to many colors, independently. Was able to set up the stereo to have the same brightness level and colors at night as the factory dash lights.

Pros: Good dimming so the stereo is not distracting at night, good features for the price

Cons: Pandora mode takes all interface from the pandora app in an iPhone, my old jvc deck still allowed me to use pandora's interface on the phone.

Beautiful Stereo for the money. We love it!

    Levi from Ohio on 12/25/2013

I installed this in my 1998 Grand Prix GTP (with 8 speakers, no OnStar), it sound absolutely stunning even with the factory speakers (yes they still work). The wiring is easy as could be, but the mounting kit that was included forced me to grind down parts of the dashboard (you can't see it) and the radio sticks out about an inch now.

Pros: Great quality, easy install, says name of playing song (on radio-with the antenna), very loud, powerful bass

Cons: Nothing, this thing is stunning for the price.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The deck is pretty cool looking, easy to use, easy to install. The only real complaint I have is that the sound quality really is not that great. I replaced a stock stereo from my 2001 Volvo s60. Sound quality dropped a ton. Which made me sad. :( I never had any complaints about the sound quality of my stock system, ,it just began acting up so I decided to replace with this JVC. I could only take it for a few days before I re-installed the stock stereo system . I noticed that a few other people have put 4 stars for the sound quality of this unit and not 5. I would pay attention to that. There ARE better sounding units in the same price range. i suggest going with something else for better sound. I may try Alpine next. Thank you however Crutchfield for working with me. I will be purchasing my next deck through you.

    Pros: awesome looking, great features/expandable.

Cons: Lacking in the sound quality department. Yes, even for the price range.

    Great Product!

    1999 Chevrolet Cavalier
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This radio has lousy FM and non-existent AM reception*. The buttons surrounding the main dial are placed too close to the dial for use during driving. The daytime brightness level is insufficient. The CD mechanism seems to be a bit "Jumpy." Maybe after a few more weeks, I'll get used to all that, but for now....not my favorite radio. I am thinking I may have to return it. * Maybe it's my car? Maybe it's the Nissan antenna adapter? Who knows. This is the end result, to me, the end user.

Pros: Good, clear sound Lots of control and display options

Cons: Buttons are too small. FM reception weak AM reception non-existent Bouncy/Jumpy CD player Won't work with my Android phone at all (but I sort of expected that)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this for my girlfriends car not only does she love it, I want it, lol. I have two Sony Xplode speaker in the front and stock speakers in the back and yet this receiver makes it sound and feel like all my speakers are aftermarket. The subwoofer feature is perfect as well it make my rear speakers into hard bumping subwoofers, no distortion. This system even fixed my radio station problem of only getting certain local stations to getting them all and more with no interference. The dimmer feature is great too as soon as the headlights go on the stereo changes to night time color. The only complaint I have is that it isn't very easy to take the face of the stereo off. Other than that even the in dash receiver kit is perfect too it makes the stereo look like it was made for my car no gaps, like stock stereo. One last thing, I don't even know how high the receiver goes because it is loud enough at volume 25.

Pros: Everything from color changing ability to speaker quality change.

Cons: Difficult to take face plate off.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered the JVC receiver after reading most of the positive reviews and they were right. After getting this baby installed and discarding my factory unit the sounds coming out of this exceeded my expectations. The USB port for my IPod charges at the same time that my music is playing. The multicolor screen has a factory setting to change colors in the display every 5 seconds which looks pretty cool at night. It also has various sound settings to equalize your music that I haven't begun to play with as of yet. Just happy to have found a decent prices receiver that with the help of instruction I could do without the help of an installer. I AM THE INSTALLER!

Pros: Polished black faceplate and bezel. Multicolor displays. Great output of audio signals coming off a head unit.

    Cons: None

The upgrade is definitely worth it - reception, sound quality and overall appearance all improved, and like any great company, JVC included all the right owners manuals on PAPER making it easy to install and easy to program. iPod control is easy and there are lots of input options - overall a great product.

From opening the box to the first time the radio lit up I was impressed greatly. This component runs Pandora, Sirius/XM, CD/CDR-W (etc), aux, USB...too much!!! This made our stock speakers sound 10x better (is it me or the stereo). Easy to install with step by step directions. The colors are amazing, can't believe the Sirius/XM is controlled from the radio...yeah baby!

Pros: Easy to install, sounds beyond amazing, all the bells and whistles live true to the JVC name.

Cons: That I don't have one in my truck...this one is in my wifes car.

Pros: color choices, usb/aux input, intuitive interface beyond initial setup

    Cons: none so far

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-R640 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-R640 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-R640 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-R640 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-R640 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

2.5V/4CH Preamp Output: The KD-R640 is equipped with two pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front, Rear/SW). You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting a pair of full-range rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading.

Subwoofer Controls: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter at 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz. You can adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between -8 and +8 (separate from the main volume level).

Pro EQ: The KD-R640 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, & User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Pro EQ
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed
Note: You can store Pro EQ bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, and Pandora).

Bass Boost: The unit's Bass Boost enhances low bass frequencies.

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can set this feature to High, Low, or Off.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The JVC KD-R640 features a detachable face to deter theft. No face-case is provided. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Variable Color LCD & Key Illumination: The JVC KD-R640 features 29 color presets for the LCD and button illumination. You can choose one of these color presets or select the ColorFlow mode which scrolls through all 29 color presets. Additionally, there is a User preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. The chosen color preset or custom color can be applied to the display panel and the backlighting for all the buttons except the eject button (it remains red). You can choose to use the same color for the LCD display and button illumination, or use a separate color for each one. You can also select a different color for daytime and nighttime in regards to the unit's LCD and button illumination.

Brightness: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving.

    Display/Button Illumination Dimmer:
The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

    Remote/Bluetooth Control

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-R640 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK52). The remote contains Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking, and Volume functions. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V Lithium-cell battery (included).

Optional Bluetooth: The JVC KS-BTA100 Bluetooth Adapter (105KSTBA10, sold separately) provides Bluetooth hands-free communication and digital audio streaming functions for the JVC KD-R640. The JVC KS-BTA100 gives you hands-free communication from your compatible Bluetooth mobile phone and wireless streaming audio from a Bluetooth enabled digital audio player, when connected to the JVC in-dash head unit. The JVC Bluetooth Adapter includes a super-sensitive microphone, an Answer/End button, and playback controls. The JVC KD-R640 can be set to automatically mute any music audio to your vehicle's speakers so you can listen to your telephone call using your car speakers.
